Mt. Shasta Boulevard is the main drag to explore downtown. A few notable shops in this area include the Fifth Season outdoor store and Mei Drucker Art gallery. Downtown is also the place to go for metaphysical and spiritual supplies and guidance. Places like Soul Connections and Crystal Matrix Gallery offer many of these resources.

Downtown is also the place to go for a local bite to eat, and its restaurant selection covers every meal of the day. Several awesome displays of gravity are within a short drive of Mt. Shasta. These moving landscapes have come to define adventure in Siskiyou County and are popular attractions throughout the year. Some waterfalls require a short hike, while others have parking spaces nearby.

One of the first to check out near Mt. Shasta is Hedge Creek Falls . This stunning waterfall is south of town on Interstate 5, near Dunsmuir. It's a short walk from the parking area to the 30-foot waterfall streaming from a basalt cliff face. This ease of access and proximity to the interstate makes Hedge Creek a popular pitstop throughout the year.

For those willing to travel a bit farther, the Volcanic Legacy Scenic Byway encounters several other waterfalls. The McCloud River hosts a set of such waterfalls, approximately a 20-mile drive southeast of Mt. Shasta. And an hour away from town, at the end of the scenic byway, Burney Falls is often considered the crown jewel of waterfalls in northern California.

On the other side of Interstate 5 from downtown, the Mt. Shasta Sisson Museum offers an interesting insight into the region. This non-profit museum is next to the historic Mount Shasta Fish Hatchery , constructed in 1888. The museum itself is within old fish hatchery buildings.

The museum is much larger than it appears from the outside. And the many intricate and detailed exhibits within offer a quality visit. Just a few topics on display include native cultures of the region, the storied history of the town, and a special exhibit devoted to lenticular clouds.

Plan to spend approximately a couple of hours at the museum and grounds. The adjacent fish hatchery offers public tours during most summer seasons, and a nearby grassy space with picnic tables is an excellent spot for a meal outside. And down the road, the Elsa Rupp Nature Trail offers a short but serene walk through the woods.

Black Butte is hard to miss when visiting Mt. Shasta. It's the prominent conical peak seen from most street corners in town. It's also a significant landmark to espy while driving along Interstate 5. And making it to the top of this rocky summit is one of the best hikes near Mt. Shasta and a challenging experience for strong hikers.

The trailhead for Black Butte is off the Everitt Memorial Highway on the east side of town. The route to the trailhead is primarily on dirt roads, with several turnoffs leading in wrong directions. A few signs point the way, but it helps to have a map or GPS to get to the trailhead.

It's a five-mile round trip to reach the summit, and the route gains over 1,800 feet in less than three miles. And Black Butte itself has a rocky slab composition, making travel strenuous much of the way. But make it to the summit of this hearty hike, and stunning views of Mount Shasta and the Trinity Alps reward the uphill effort.

Shastice Park , on the northeast side of town, is a lovely city park backdropped by the mountain. A little less than half of its 38 acres are developed, with mowed lawns and community attractions. A few of its attractions include a skate park, an off-leash dog area, and several picnic spots.

Come winter, Shastice is home to the outdoor Siskiyou Ice Rink . The park also supports several intramural athletic leagues, with tennis courts, pickleball courts, and a lighted softball field. And if anything, Shastice is an excellent place to bring a book or packed lunch to enjoy the nearby mountain scene.

Another popular public spot to explore in Mt. Shasta is Sisson Meadow . This open grassland is behind the Mt. Shasta Library and Sisson Elementary School. It's a short stroll through this 7.5-acre meadow at the center of town, but it offers a peaceful respite nonetheless. The primary route follows a boardwalk trail lined with benches.

Twenty minutes south of Mt. Shasta, Castle Crags State Park borders the expansive Castle Crags Wilderness of Shasta-Trinity National Forest. And it offers an auditorium-like view of these massive namesake pinnacles. These 6,000-feet peaks form a stunning jagged crown that illustrates why Castle Crags is one of California's best state parks .

Alongside stunning views of Castle Crags, the state park offers several days of recreation. Over 28 miles of trails navigate the area, including the country-spanning Pacific Crest Trail. Vista Point is one popular trailhead with a view, and the Crags Trail offers an outlet to reach the remarkable Castle Dome.

The state park is also one of the best campgrounds near Mt. Shasta . Many of the 76 standard sites available are next to the Sacramento River that weaves through the park. This rushing river is also a lure for anglers from across the region. RV and tent campers all find sites at the state park.

Come winter, residents and tourists head to the nearby Mount Shasta Ski Park, one of California's best ski resorts . The mountain is accessible with a 20-minute drive from downtown on State Route 89, also known as the Volcanic Legacy Scenic Byway . This ease of access makes Mt. Shasta a common basecamp for ski vacations.

Downhill enthusiasts have over 400 acres and 32 trails to explore at Mount Shasta Ski Park . A few easier routes are near the 5,500-foot base of the park. But many of the runs are better suited for intermediate and advanced skiers . The resort is also home to two terrain parks and night skiing on the weekends.

South of Mount Shasta Ski Park, the Mt. Shasta Nordic Center offers a different type of skiing appeal. This community-driven organization maintains 23.5 kilometers of groomed cross-country trails. They also provide a warming hut, snowshoe rentals, and various clinics and lessons.

This ghost town historical park is approximately 70 miles south of Mt. Shasta. Shasta State Historic Park is directly west of Redding near Whiskeytown Recreation Area , and it's the site of "Shasta City," a once-bustling center of the region's gold-mining boom in the mid-1800s. It's free to walk around the sites and enjoy the history.

Today, crumbled brick buildings and collapsed roofs comprise the remnants of this prosperous era. Interpretive information at the park helps paint the picture of the "Queen City of the Northern Mines." And it's not all decay at the state historic park. Some buildings have been restored to their original appearances, like the Courthouse Museum and the Litsch General Store.

• At the base of the mountain, Mount Shasta Resort is one of the best places to stay in the city. Accommodation is in rooms or Craftsman-style chalets that come in one- and two-bedroom configurations. Chalets have full kitchens. Amenities include a restaurant, spa, and 18-hole golf course. The resort is pet-friendly.
• Mount Shasta Ranch Bed & Breakfast sits on the grounds of a former thoroughbred horse ranch. In a building dating back to the 1920s, this elegant luxe B&B has five rooms in the main house, a separate carriage house with another five rooms and a two-bedroom cottage that is great for families. A full breakfast is complimentary. The property is dog-friendly.

Mid-Range Hotels:

• With city and mountain views, the Best Western Plus Tree House is a top mid-range choice. This hotel has a mix of rooms and suites. All are contemporary and come with microwaves and refrigerators. Amenities include an indoor pool, a hot tub, fitness room, and a restaurant.
• Recently renovated, the Inn at Mount Shasta has a downtown location and a modern look throughout. Rooms and suites are spacious with comfy beds. There is no on-site restaurant, but several within walking distance. This hotel is pet-friendly.
• The Strawberry Valley Inn is another popular mid-range choice. It offers elegant rooms and suites. A free continental breakfast is served, and the inn welcomes dogs.

Budget Hotels:

• Located downtown, the Cold Creek Inn is a great budget choice. Rooms are clean and comfortable with pillowtop mattresses and down comforters. Parking is complimentary, there is a lounge, dogs are welcome, and there is an on-site vending machine.
• Right by the mountain, LOGE Mt. Shasta attracts outdoor enthusiasts. It offers a mix of hostel bunk rooms, camping, and proper hotel rooms. The vibe is fun and better-suited for adults than families. It is also very dog-friendly. There is live music some nights and outdoor gear can be rented on-site.

Mount Shasta is the name of the town, but it’s also the name of the mammoth mountain that dominates the horizon. Here you’ll find wonderful waterfalls, legendary trails, meadows to meander, and even a freakin’ lava tube cave to discover!

We absolutely love this town in northern California and can pretty much guarantee you will too, after reading this article.

Pluto’s Cave. .. even the name sounds mysterious, and it’s calling for you to come and explore. It may be a little off the beaten path, but it is worth taking the road less traveled for this one as you make your way to the outskirts of Mount Shasta and venture inside a partially collapsed lava cave.

Telling your mates that you have been inside a 190,000-year-old cave is something to brag about. The tube was formed when Mount Shasta erupted, which should encourage you to add it to your list of things to do in Mount Shasta.

You can hike around 2 miles into the cave, and you may be surprised at how vast it is, so be sure to bring the proper footwear and some form of lighting.

Distance: 6.1 miles Type of Trail : Out & Back Difficulty: Hard Elevation Gain: 1,991 ft

It may be quite a challenging climb, but the Black Butte hike is one of the best things to do in Mount Shasta. You will be heading around the north side of this lofty pinnacle, offering some great views before you even reach the summit.

The volcanic peak is almost completely conical, with the trail initially built to access the Forest Service lookout that once sat at the summit. Don’t be put off by the steep sides, as the trail maintains a steady grade for most of the walk, with views out over the Mount Shasta area the whole way.

You should be able to spot Sheeprock, the Goosenest, Willow Creek Mountain, and Mount McLoughlin over in Oregon when the weather is clear. Of course, the impressive presence of Mount Shasta also dominates the horizon.

Just one mile north of downtown, you won’t even have to leave the city to explore the great outdoors, thanks to Mount Shasta City Park.

The park has all you need for a lazy day away from the hustle and bustle of town, with four beautiful picnic areas, a playground to keep the kids entertained, and the Headquarters of Mt Shasta Recreation and Parks District.

Be sure to look up if any events are taking place in the park during your visit for some of the best things to do in Mount Shasta. Nature trails wind their way through the trees and along Big Springs Creek, with options to extend your walk beyond the park if you fancy stretching your legs a little longer.

The Gateway Trail system is an incredible way to explore the Mount Shasta landscape. While similar, each trail offers something different and can be hiked or biked depending on your exploring preference.

One of the best things about the trails is that you don’t have to travel far outside the town to reach the trailheads, as they are just minutes away from the downtown core.

At the foot of the mountain and surrounded by dense forests, you will forget about the busy city you left behind. With an easy grade, the trails are perfect for a gentle stroll and witnessing the incredible landscape.

There are some incredible hikes around Mount Shasta, too many for us to list here. Most trails wind their way around this mighty mountain, with not too many on the mountain itself. The trails on the mountain are quite technical, as you dodge glaciers and their steep sides.

The summit tends to be for experienced climbers or as a guided ascent. Avalanche Gulch is the most popular route and has the easiest access, but it is far from easy, and it is still advisable to go with a guide if you want to tackle this mighty climb.

As much as summiting the mountain will thrill you, you can’t see the mountain if you are on it! Some of the best trails can be found around the mountain’s base.

The Old Ski Bowl Trail is one of our favorites, exploring the site of Mount Shasta’s first ski resort. It offers fantastic views while allowing you to gain an insight into the area’s history.

The Horse Camp Trail is another incredible hike as you make the ascent to Shasta Alpine Lodge. Along the way, you will be greeted with a fantastic view of Mount Shasta, there is a lot of elevation gain over a short trail, but it is well worth it.

One of the best things to do in Mount Shasta is to visit the beautiful Lake Siskiyou. You can explore the lake by taking the Lake Siskiyou Trail Loop on foot or by bike, which takes you around the shore of this reservoir, accompanied by stunning mountain views along the way.

Be sure not to miss the single arch suspension bridge spanning Wagon Creek for a glimpse at a seriously cool piece of architecture and the perfect frame for a photo or two. The lake has everything you need for a perfect summer day, with sandy shores and warm waters.

The lake is a popular place to camp, with families, adventurers, couples, and friends making use of the facilities at Lake Siskiyou Resort , where cabins and tent sites are available. You can also rent a kayak or paddleboard and spend your day on the water.

Faery Falls is a truly beautiful waterfall, reached by a lovely hike. Getting there is easy, although you will have to know where you are going as no signs are pointing you in the right direction (all the more chance for you to have the place to yourself).

After a short up-and-down hike, you will begin descending down to the river and falls. It is a distinctly impressive waterfall at 50 feet high and split into two cascades. If you feel up to it, you can follow the trail up a little further to get views of the valley.

This is one of the best waterfalls in Mount Shasta as well as one of our favorite Northern California waterfalls .

What the Hedge Creek Falls Trail lacks in length certainly makes up for in sheer beauty.

Not only does the end of this hike reward you with stunning views of Hedge Creek Falls themselves but also of Mount Shasta and the tumbling Sacramento River, making it one of the most scenic things to do in Mount Shasta.

A fantastic element of this waterfall is you can walk behind it via the small cave that has been created, and there is an incredible viewing platform that offers views of the river and Mount Shasta. It is easy, scenic, and in a convenient location; what is not to love?

Three waterfalls in one is our kind of hike! Throw in some rich vegetation and canyons made of basalt lava rock, and you have got a winning formula. The best place to start the hike is at the Lower Falls parking lot so that you can hike upstream.

From the first waterfall, it is about 0.7 miles to the Middle Falls, and it is at this point the climbing starts via switchback, which gives prime viewing of the Middle Falls from above. For this part of the hike, you will be making your way along the canyon rim all the way to Upper Falls.

A great thing about these falls is that each of the waterfalls, lower, middle and upper, can be accessed as three district trips, with places to park at each waterfall, so if you are short on time, you can always check out just one.

TIP: You might want to head to Burney Falls too while you’re out here!

For a modest effort, you will see spectacular scenery on the Castle Lake to Heart Lake Trail . Start the hike at the parking lot by Castle Lake, and begin to switch back along the lake through the forest and be greeted with impressive views of Castle Lake below you.

Continue through a meadow, following the signs to Heart Lake, and take in the sights of Mount Shasta across the meadow.

Step into another world at Castle Crags Wilderness. Picture towering spires of rock, sheer cliff faces, twisting canyons, mountain lakes, and some of the most picturesque scenes in the area.

The soaring granite spires are the main draw, with too many of these impressive rock formations to count. There are over 27 miles of trails to enjoy, which can be explored via some of the nine trailheads, and the best thing is, they are rarely crowded.

If you are up for a longer hike, try tackling part of the Pacific Crest Trail, which twists for 19 miles through the area (yet is part of a much longer hike and showcases some of the park’s main scenic highlights).

The Wilderness borders the Castle Crags State Park , which also has its fair share of granite crags and makes for the perfect place to spend the night in the state park campground for RVs, trailers, and tents or the slightly smaller Riverside Campground.

Things to Do Near Mount Shasta

Mount Shasta might be one of the best California mountain towns to visit, but you won’t have to go far to find even more things to do in the area! All of these are just a stone’s throw away…

Make the city of Redding, California, your base for all things outdoor adventure (if not Mount Shasta). It is a great place to stay, with plenty of lodging and cool places to grab a bite to eat. Once you are ready to tear yourself away from Downtown, there are some incredible places to explore in the surrounding area.

• Head to nearby parks, such as Lassen Volcanic National Park or Whiskeytown National Recreation Area.
• Tackle some of the epic trails that surround the city, such as the Sacramento River National Recreation Trail.
• Water sports on Shasta Lake are a lot of fun on a hot day.
• Get a little insight into the area’s history at Shasta State Historic Park. The ghost town offers a unique look into one of Califonia’s busiest towns during the gold rush.

With over 500 lava tube caves, you will never have to revisit another lava tube once you have visited the Lava Beds National Monument.

But the excitement doesn’t just stop at lava tubes; you should also expect a landscape made up of cinder cones, lava flows, splatter cones, caves, and pit craters; it’s an incredibly wild place!

Despite the hot temperatures above the ground, you will still want to make sure you have a jacket with you, as it can be pretty chilly inside the caves, even with all the ducking and crawling that is sometimes necessary.

Take the Cave Loop Road to experience some of the tubes that are open to the public. The ultimate cave open for exploring is the 6,903 feet Catacombs Cave, but only enter if you are fully prepared for a tricky scramble.

Mount Shasta is located along the I-5 highway in Siskiyou County, California about one hour south of the Oregon Border. With access to mountains, the Shasta-Trinity wilderness, lakes and rivers, this area of Northern California is becoming very popular for getaways from the Bay Area and outdoor enthusiasts all over.

Getting to Mount Shasta

I definitely recommend having a vehicle.  The population of Mount Shasta City, California is just above 3,000 people and there’s really not a lot around in terms of taxi’s and public transit options.

• Redding Municipal Airport (RDD/KRDD): 61 miles
• Klamath Falls Airport (LMT/KLMT): 94 miles
• Rogue Valley International-Medford Airport (MFR/KMFR): 100 miles
• San Francisco: 5 hour drive
• Reno: 4 hour drive
• Portland: 6 hour drive

Best Things to do in Mount Shasta:

1. waterfalls near mount shasta.

First, there are lots of impressive waterfalls here and nearby! Pack a lunch and go sit by the water. I went to Faery Falls on a particularly hot day and it was incredible. I went during the week and it was not crowded. You will want to use AllTrails or whatever your preferred navigation app is to get there.

2. Backpacking near Mount Shasta

There are 3 major wilderness areas with lots of available trails to backpacking

• Castle Crag Wilderness
• Mount Shasta Wilderness
• Trinity Alps Wilderness

Mount Shasta makes for a great home base for so many incredible trails. I backpacked into the Castle Crags Wilderness area above Heart Lake and saw one of the best sunrises of my life. If you’re new to backpacking be sure to read my backpacking guide on how to get started and properly prepare!

3. Visit Castle Crags State Park

Like hiking? This place should definitely be on your list of things to do in Mount Shasta. You get a glimpse of the towering 6000-feet tall granite spires  on your way North to Mount Shasta. With the Sacramento River and Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) running through this park I knew I had to check it out. So, I booked a camping spot here and set out to find the best trails.

• 5.2 miles | 2,066 ft elevation gain
• 2.8 miles | 613 ft elevation gain
• 3.1 miles | 479 ft elevation gain

4. Shasta Caves

Being that Mt Shasta is a volcano, there are many cave and lava tube options in the area to explore. I did not get a chance to do this on my trip, but you bet I’ll be back sometime to cross this off my list.

Things to do in Mount Shasta: CAVES

1. lake shasta caverns national natural landmark.

To go on this geologic adventure, you will need to go on a guided tour. These caverns have impressive stalactites and stalagmites. Tickets are available by reservation or on a first come first served basis. Make it a date night with a dinner cruise! Check out the tour HERE.

Pluto’s Cave is a partially collapsed lava tube just north of Mount Shasta in the Klamath National Forest. Bring a flashlight and hike the short 0.7 mile flat trail to get to the base of the cave. Navigation like AllTrails is recommended! Check out the hike HERE

5. Sleep in a Train!

Staying here was such a blast and had such great views of the Castle Crag Spires! With over 28 train cars to choose from and a train car restaurant, pool and hot tub, I promise you won’t be bored here.

6. Relax at a Lake

Mt Shasta area has lots of lakes and it can get pretty hot here in the summer which is why they are a must for Things to do in Mount Shasta. Pack a picnic or rent a kayak here and enjoy the views!

• Short walk up from Parking Lot
• Siskiyou Beach (views of Mt Shasta)
• Lake Siskiyou Viewpoint (Drive up)
• Lake Siskiyou Trail (Hike around the entire lake: 7.3 miles)
• Alpine Lake Hike in the Shasta-Trinity Wilderness: 3.4 miles, 849 ft elevation gain.

7. Best Hiking in the Area

There are a lot of hiking trails here with gorgeous views of the mountains. A quick browse of what Trinity National Forest and Shasta Wilderness areas has to offer makes me want to plan a second trip back here. Here are some of the best trails that this part of Northern California has to offer!

• Bunny Flat to Panther Meadow on Everitt Memorial Highway (7 miles | 1,354 ft)
• South Gate Trail (3.6 miles | 875 ft)
• Heart Lake (3.0 miles | 813 ft)
• Crags Trail to Castle Dome (5.2 miles | 2,066 ft)
• Faery Falls and Ney Springs (1.3 miles | 255 ft)
• Pluto’s Cave (0.7 miles | 32 ft)

8. Explore National Forest Roads

From a quick browse on google maps, I could see lots of forest roads that could lead to some great adventures! I like to use ioverlander.com or freecampsites.net when looking for OHV roads! Be sure to do your research if you are going to attempt a 4×4 OHV road. You will need an adequate vehicle, satellite communication, survival essentials and more. 9. Winter Activities

A lot of these things to do are geared towards summer travel. The winter time in the Mount Shasta area has a ton of adventurous activities for the outdoor lover as well!

• Cross Country Skiing

10. Mount Shasta Spiritual Adventures and Tours

If you’re into it, this area is loaded with crystal shops and energy vortex tours. It reminds me of Sedona, Arizona in that way. I have not personally taken any of the tours, and feel out of my element to advise any particular ones, but a quick google search : Mt Shasta Spiritual Tours brought up many options.

Where to Stay When Visiting Mount Shasta

There are many options depending on your preference, so I will list some of the best options that I have found and some that I’ve personally stayed at.

Unique Stay: Dunsmuir Railroad Park Resort

As mentioned in the best Things to Do in Shasta List, this railroad resort is truly a delightful stay. We stayed in Caboose 19 and I would love to come back! Find Booking Info HERE .

Campground: Castle Crags State Park Campground

Last, but not least, I wanted to share some food recommendations. I felt like I had really good luck finding delicious food, which can sometimes be challenging in small towns.

Yaks on the 5

If you want an expensive, but absurdly good and unique burger, check this place out. They had the strangest burger combos and I loved it. They also have veggie burger options. Find out more on their website HERE.

Mt Shasta Brewing Co.

I love checking out local breweries when traveling, especially after hiking or backpacking. This was perfect for lunch with lots of yummy options. I really enjoyed the jalapeno beer and the outdoor seating available. For more information click HERE.

This Taphouse had some of the best food on the trip as well as good beer and wine options. Think upscale pub food!

As you can see, there are so many activities in the Mount Shasta area that are worth checking out. I mean, heck, I want to plan a trip back to cross some more of these off my list. With all the hiking options , waterfall views , mountain views, and unique stays listed above, you should be able to craft the ultimate Northern California getaway! 7 Outdoor Destinations to Explore in Mt. Shasta

An eclectic mountain town at the base of massive dormant volcano, Mt. Shasta is one of our favorite places to visit in Northern California.

We fell in love with Mt. Shasta for two reasons. The first being its awesome natural beauty and limitless outdoor activities. Dramatic volcanic landscapes, charming mountain lakes, and enchanting waterfalls. We spent an entire week exploring the area and feel like we had barely scratched the surface.

Hiking the Lake Siskiyou Trail

To the southwest of the town, you’ll find Lake Siskiyou – one of the prettiest reservoirs we’ve seen in all of California. While it’s southern shore has been built up by the Lake Siskiyou Resort, the northern shore remains relatively untouched. While there is plenty of fishing, boating, and kayaking to be done at this lake, a great way experience it from the land is to walk the Lake Siskiyou loop trail. During the summer, when seasonal bridges are installed, the hike is 7 mile round trip. If you don’t have time to do the full hike, we would definitely recommend checking out Wagon Creek Bridge. This massive foot bridge spans over one of the lake’s inlets and was the final piece to connect the entire Lake Siskiyou loop trail. The bridge is impressive enough on its own, but it’s even more spectacular to see it with Mt. Shasta behind it.

Swimming at Castle Lake

To the southwest of the Mt Shasta, above Lake Siskiyou, you’ll find the crystal clear waters of Castle Lake. This pristine mountain lake is at 5,440 feet of elevation and is backed with a headboard of rocky cliffs. While most lakes at this elevation are freezing cold, Castle Lake is fairly shallow in most parts – allowing its waters to warm rapidly during the summer. It is a popular destination in the summer for swimmers, kayakers, and paddle boarders. In the middle of the lake, there is a moored swimming platform for those willing to make the swim. One the Southern end of the lake, there are a few prime spots to scramble up the rocks above the lake and jump in. There are trails leading along the eastern and western shores, allowing visitors to find their own secluded spots.

Finding the Headwaters at City Park

While a city park might not seem like an outdoor “destination” per se, there is definitely something unique going on at Mt. Shasta City Park that’s worth checking out. On the western side of the park, spring water emerges from the ground to form the headwaters for the Sacramento River. This crystal clear and perpetually frigid water actually comes from snow that fell high up on the slopes of Mt. Shasta over fifty years ago. When the snow melted, the water passed through a series of underground caverns and lava tubes before finally emerging here. While there is an official placard stating that the city has not approved of the water in the spring for drinking, there is usually a crowd of people filling up their water bottles and jugs. Like many things in Mt. Shasta, the water from this spring has a definite spiritual significance and people travel from all over just to drink from it.

oh my god!! These pictures and views are unbelievable! Super tranquil 😀 Some day I’ll go hiking where I can take a dip in the Alpine lakes! All the ones here are watersheds. BTW – love that woody phone case!

Alpine swimming is my #1 hobby at the current moment 🙂 The whole Shasta-Trinity National Forest is packed with gorgeous hiking (check out the Trinity Alps!) – definitely worth a camping trip sometime.

My husband and I have visited Mount Shasta several times, and it is certainly a place where you can visit year round and find something adventurous to do, especially if you are an outdoor enthusiast! In 2019, we got engaged at the stunning Castle Lake, and we love returning to the splendor of the mountains and trails that Mt.Shasta has to offer.

Mount Shasta is about four and a half hours from San Francisco and one hour from the Oregon state border. Ironically, I believe more Oregonians visit this stunning Northern California destination than Californians do!

For such a picturesque mountain town, the majority of the year it is generally non-touristy and peaceful. Visiting Mount Shasta is like stepping back in time; the little downtown streets are calm and full of little hole-in-the-wall eateries.

Why Should You Visit Mount Shasta?

People are drawn to this area for a variety of reasons. Mount Shasta features outdoor activities for all seasons, whether you prefer hiking, bicycling, or skiing. It's also known as one of the world's few spiritual vortexes, and Native Americans regard it as particularly sacred mountain.

Where to Stay in Mount Shasta?

Unlike Tahoe and Mammoth, there are no luxury hotels in this quaint mountain town, but there are some fantastic budget hotels for adventurous folks.

My favorite hotel in Mount Shasta is the newly renovated LOGE Camp Hotel , which boasts outdoor fire pits, a small cafe on site, commissary kitchen and stylish adventure themed rooms. The room is adorned with a hammock, s'mores kit, Yeti cooler and you can even rent equipment on-site for all the adventures you plan to take! We rented Snowshoes for $15 and in the summer time they have mountain bikes and a shuttle to bring you up to the mountain.

We stayed at LOGE Camps in Leavenworth, WA , which had private riverside cabins, and we loved it so much that we were thrilled to discover that they had added a location in Mount Shasta!

We have also stayed at the Best Western Tree House , which was a nice hotel. I wasn't expecting anything spectacular, but it had a wonderful cabin atmosphere and a bar on site that we enjoyed for a lovely little night cap, plus it's dog friendly, which is a great plus! From our bedroom, we had a pleasant view of Mt.Shasta, which was all I could ask for.

What to Do in Mount Shasta?

Find the best Mount Shasta activities based on the season you want to visit.

The Best times to go hiking in Mount Shasta is the April-October when the snow has melted. Before heading out for a hike I recommend checking AllTrails to see what the conditions are like to make sure you are properly prepared.

Bunny Flat to Panther Meadow: A 7-mile out-and-back dog-friendly trail with a 1,354-foot elevation rise begins at Bunny Flat and loops around to Panther Meadows.

Heart Lake Trail From Castle Lake: Heart Lake is beautiful 2.4 mile hike , and makes for a great photo opportunity, the vistas of Mount Shasta from the lookout spots above the lake are breathtaking.

Spring Hill Trail: The 2.6 mile moderately trafficked loop trail is primarily used for hiking, walking, nature trips, and birding and is accessible year-round.

Tip: I recommend bringing a picnic lunch and stopping at Old Ski Bowl for a snack and to take in the sights on the Bunny Flat to Panther Meadow Trail. You'll see layered mountains, a twisting winding road, and a sea of trees...oh, and Mt Shasta will be right behind you.

Explore Waterfalls

Mt. Shasta's surroundings are teeming with breathtaking cascading waterfalls. Early spring and summer are the ideal times to see Mount Shasta's waterfalls. Most trails in the area for exploring waterfalls are easily accessible and generally under 1 mile long.

Hedge Creek Falls

Hedge Creek Falls, located south of Mount Shasta, is a 35-foot waterfall that cascades into a forested gorge from a basalt overhang.

You might see a sign for Hedge Creek Falls on the side of the freeway on your way out of town; that's how we found this gorgeous cascade. They call it the "Million Dollar Waterfall" because they wanted to build over the falls before building the 1-5 freeway, but it was eventually preserved and the plans were rerouted, which cost a million dollars to create! I'm really pleased they preserved this waterfall after all because it's extremely unique in that you can walk behind it !

McCloud Falls

The McCloud River Trail follows along a basalt lava rock canyon, visiting three spectacular cascading waterfalls, known as Upper, Middle and Lower Falls. This well-kept route offers summer swimming, fall foliage, and many trail users go swimming or cliff diving, but caution is advised. During the winter, the trail is closed at the parking lot , although you can snowshoe in if you like.

Burney Falls

McArthur Burney Falls Memorial State Park is home to Burney Falls, a 129-foot waterfall. Burney Falls is the park's masterpiece and possibly one of California's most beautiful waterfalls . Unlike most waterfalls, this one has numerous springs emerging from the rock, giving it a unique mystical appearance. The entrance fee is $10, and from April through October, expect a huge influx of visitors! We went at the end of January, when it was fairly quiet in terms of tourists.

Potem Falls

Potem Falls is a beautiful 70-foot waterfall in the Shasta Trinity National Forest, and it's a great place to cool off on hot summer days. This waterfall was so pristine that it reminded me of a landscape from Hawaii or Thailand.

Other mentionable waterfalls in the area include Faery Falls, Mossbrae Falls (Private Property), Hatchet Creek Falls, Root Creek Falls, and Burstarse Falls!

Skiing & Snowshoeing

Winter sports like skiing, backcountry skiing, and snowshoeing are available at Mt Shasta. Because of the low elevation, the season is brief, therefore I recommend keeping up with weather forecasts before visiting . We rented snowshoes from our hotel for $15 and went up to Castle Lake; it was a little icy, so we didn't make it up to Heart Lake, but we had a great time!

Catch Sunset Views of Mt.Shasta

Nothing beats the glow of Mt.Shasta at Sunset. Check out one of the best sunset viewing spots below and watch the pink glow set over the snowcapped mountains. Mt. Shasta is also famous for its very distinctive cloud formations , the lenticular clouds , which arise usually in the fall and winter and are a unique sight to see!

Where to Eat in Mt. Shasta

Mount Shasta has only a handful of restaurants, although you will find the small downtown area rather charming! Arrive a little early at most dinner establishments because the slower service in a small town requires some patience.

Yaks Mt Shasta Koffee & Eatery

Yaks has a fantastic range of coffee, smoothies, and bagels & sandwiches. The quality, quantity, and flavor is unmatched for this little mountain town. Reviewers were not kidding when they said this the best breakfast burrito they've ever had! Perks for your vegetarian friends because they carry lots of vegetarian alternatives on their menu! The Peanut Butter Latte was to die for!

Seven Suns Coffee & Cafe

We had breakfast and lunch at Seven Suns and really enjoyed our meals. I'm a sucker for a good BLT Sandwich and it definitely hit the spot for me. Although, the Iced Chai Buzz drink was so delicious I ended up coming back again before we left so I could take on to-go for our road trip home! Plus, they have a nice outdoor patio, which is dog-friendly.

Pipeline is top-notch in every way: wonderful beers, amazing cuisine, amazing staff, amazing interior/decor, and fantastic music. Try a variety of appetizers from their eclectic menu - cheese curds and duck fat fries are a hit! I ordered an Ahi Bowl, and despite my reservations about the quality of the fish being so far from the ocean, I was pleasantly pleased by how wonderful it was!

The Garden Tap (Currently Closed)

The Garden Tap is a terrific location to come for a craft beer, oven-fired pizzas, and salads. Relax and unwind with friends in the dappled shade of the gorgeous nursery (Native Grounds Nursery), adjacent to the pond, or take a beer and browse an excellent range of plants, let your imagination run wild!

Phuket Thai Cafe

This Thai cafe has a charming old-school diner vibe and serves excellent Thai flavors, as well as a full vegan menu ! Arrive early because they fill up quickly. They follow all COVID protocols, so seating is spaced apart for safety. This restaurant is also fantastic for take-out, which we did one night and enjoyed everything we ordered.

Hari Om Shri Ram Indian Cuisine

We ate at Hari Om Shri Ram Indian Cuisine, which had excellent Yelp and Google reviews. To be honest, our experience was mediocre at best. The cuisine was good, and we enjoyed their Indian beers, but the hospitality and setup was a little less than ideal. The say the least, the service was extremely chaotic, although I'd love to come back and give it another shot!

Mount Shasta has long been a beautiful place of inspiration for many. Centuries ago this sacred volcano influenced Native American tribes local to the area, which is evident through the tribes’ myths and stories. Today, travelers from all over the world seek out this region which is considered one of Earth’s chakras , specifically the root chakra.

Many mystical stories have stemmed from this area as a result from stories of spiritual higher beings living in the mountain, to legends of sacred springs, there are so many stories that revolve around this part of California. 

However, Mount Shasta also happens to be one of the most beautiful places in all of the United States — and the world. Taking a trip here can be fun for adventure seekers, those on a spiritual journey, or those who simply love to take in beautiful sights. There are many things to do in Mount Shasta for all for a once-in-a-lifetime adventure.

1. Hiking in Mount Shasta

While there are many Mount Shasta activities, hiking on trails around the mountain are, of course, the best. Outdoor lovers will most likely spend most of their time hiking the many trails around the area, and if you’re visiting in the summer, you should   check out Panther Meadows, which is only available to hike after the snow melts in the summer. Panther Meadows is full of wildflowers, has spring water that trickles throughout it, and offers some of the most breathtaking views of Mount Shasta.

Another option that offers a ton of great views for effort is hiking from Castle Lake to Heart Lake. Park at Castle Lake, which is a great area to relax for a day too, and enjoy the 2-3 hour hike up to Heart Lake where you’ll be rewarded with gorgeous views of Mt Shasta.

The McCloud River Falls Trail follows the McCloud River and is quite easy, making it perfect for beginner hikers or those who are looking for something more leisurely. When hiking this trail, you’ll end up passing three different waterfalls — all of which are gorgeous examples of nature.

Other popular hiking trails include:

• Black Butte Trail
• Horse Camp — which leads to Green Butte, Helen Lake, and Hidden Valley trails
• Spring Hill, by Mount Shasta City

Both Panthere Meadow and Bunny Flat are ideal places to start any number of hikes.

2. Explore Shasta-Trinity National Forest

There’s a lot you can do when exploring Shasta-Trinity National Forest, which encompasses the dormant volcano. Popular activities done by locals and visitors alike include hiking, camping, fishing, backcountry skiing, and even mountaineering.

The Shasta-Trinity National Forest has also become a beautiful place for spiritual activities, such as practicing yoga or meditating. As the entire national forest has over 2.2 million acres, there’s lots of room to explore and partake in whatever activity your heart desires!

3. Head to Downtown Mount Shasta

While exploring Mount Shasta should be on everyone’s bucket list, exploring the city of Mount Shasta shouldn’t be slept on as this quaint town is quite unique. Head down to Mt. Shasta Boulevard, the main street, to start your journey. If you’re on a spiritual trip, you might find joy by checking out some metaphysical and spiritual shops downtown. Soul Connections and Crystal Keepers are two great shops to check out.

There are also wonderful places to shop and eat at, including Seven Suns Coffee & Cafe or Lily’s which is a top spot for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. And pass up on Handsome John’s, the local speakeasy! 

4. Ski and snowboard at Mount Shasta Ski Park

Skiing and snowboarding tend to be some of the most popular Mount Shasta attractions for locals and visitors alike. Who could resist hitting the slopes on such a majestic mountain — and with such a beautiful view?

Mt. Shasta Ski Park, one of the best ski resorts in California, is going to be your go-to place if you’re looking to have fun during the skiing season. While Mount Shasta does have snow on its peak year-round, the skiing season is only open during winter, closing at the end of April. However, Mt. Shasta Ski Park will still be open year-round for other activities, such as summit climbing and mountain biking. The park offers over 400 acres to enjoy and 32 different trails. If you’re really adventurous, partake in night skiing! 

5. Seek out breathtaking waterfalls

You’re in for a treat as around Mount Shasta, there are five main waterfalls you can hike to and discover which include:

• Burney Falls
• Faery Falls
• Hedge Creek Falls
• McCloud Falls
• Mossbrae Falls

Hedge Creek Falls is possibly the easiest waterfall to get to, and therefore the most popular one throughout the region. Other waterfalls take a bit more time and hiking to get to. 

If you find yourself a bit away and are searching for things to do near Mt Shasta, check out Burney Falls. Burney Falls lies about an hour away from Mount Shasta (the town). However, just like the other waterfalls listed here, it’s absolutely beautiful.  

6. Check out some lava tubes

Since Mount Shasta is a dormant volcano, you can find a number of lava tubes in the area and around Siskiyou County. Lava Beds National Monument is famous option, but it is about 2 hours away from the town. However, Pluto’s Cave is another stellar option close by that will bring you on a trail in and out of the cave that was formed by the lava that spread during the last eruption in 1786.  

7. Explore Castle Crags State Park

Castle Crags is beautiful and it has a ton of legends and myths about it, making it a spiritual place for many. Castle Crags itself is a rock formation in the state park of the same name, about twenty minutes south of Mount Shasta. Castle Crags, which is one of California’s most well-known state parks, touts 6,000 feet peaks and some of the most stunning views. The rock formations are more than 170 million years old and are truly awe-inspiring. There’s much to do on a Castle Crags journey including camping, hiking, picnicking, and fishing.

8. Camp at Panther Meadows

While there are many places to camp around Mount Shasta — Castle Crags, Shasta-Trinity National Forest, Lake Siskiyou Camp Resort, etc — special attention should be given to Panther Meadows. We’ve already talked about how you should hike to this beautiful location but if you have the time, be sure to camp here too.

Panther Meadows rests on the slopes of Mount Shasta and is 7,420 feet above the ground – the highest campground on the mountain. Because of its high standing, you can easily see beautiful views of Castle Crags and the Sacramento River.

If you’re seeking to hike some more, you can easily access another trail up the side of Mount Shasta — which will lead you up another 9,000 feet. 

9. Learn Mt Shasta history at the Mt. Shasta Sisson Museum

One of the most interesting things about Mount Shasta is its history. How much is a legend? How much is true?

Learn everything you’ve ever wanted to know about this glorious land by heading to the Mt. Shasta Sisson Museum which occupies what used to be an old fish hatchery building. The museums covers all the most relevant history of Mount Shasta from the native tribes who called the area home centuries ago to more recent stories, such as how the town came to be.

Visiting this non-profit museum is a great way to begin your trip, especially before you start to go out to visit certain areas of Mount Shasta as understanding the history behind the land can help you feel more in tune with your journey and appreciate the reasons why many believe this area to be so sacred.

10. Spend a day at Lake Siskiyou

This list would not be complete without mentioning Lake Siskiyou. This lake is only three miles southwest of Mount Shasta’s downtown, with an abundance of things to do as this lake is a very popular destination for tourists and locals alike during the summer. Hiking trails are around the lake, as well as a golf course next door.

11. Tour Mount Shasta’s ghost town

With so much history in the area, it’s not surprising that there is a ghost town nearby. Situated in Shasta State Historic Park, Shasta City used to be a huge town in the mid-1800s during the gold-mining boom. 

This ghost town is about 70 miles south, with most of Shasta City in decay. It looks much like how you would think a ghost town would appear, with crumbling buildings and ruins left behind with a few buildings that have been restored to look as they once did back in the 1800s for a better idea.

When is the best time to visit Mount Shasta?

Any time between April and September is the best time to visit Mount Shasta. This will ensure that you’ll deal with the least amount of snow on the mountain (though there is always some if you’re going to the summit) but can also enjoy the lakes and trails of the area. If you’re looking to ski, March to April are prime months. 

How long should I spend in Mt. Shasta?

Three days in Mount Shasta is recommended as it allows you to take three different hikes or journeys in three different areas of the region — and this also gives you ample time to connect spiritually to all parts of the land. During this three-day trip, you’ll also have enough time to check out the small town of Mount Shasta too.

Mount Shasta Viewpoints: Seven Great Ways to See the Mountain

Driving up Highway 5, Mount Shasta is a commanding presence that is especially awesome when no clouds are blocking the view. The mountain sits at over 14,000 feet and is not part of a traditional mountain range like you would see in the Eastern Sierras. Because of this, the mountain stands alone, and you can see it from all over Siskiyou County. If you happen to be in the area on a clear day, here are seven great spots to see Mt Shasta. Downtown Mt Shasta

The mountain can actually be seen well from all over the city of Mt Shasta. Whether driving through the downtown or just heading to the outskirts, you can get some great views looking up at the peak.

Lake Siskiyou

Lake Siskiyou is one of the classic Mt Shasta views, where you will see the mountain right behind the lake, and if you are lucky and it is a calm day, you may even get a reflection shot. This is a great place to hang out for the day, but if you can only go for a short period, then I recommend early in the morning so that the water is calm.

Bunny Flats

During the winter, this is the closest you can drive to Mt Shasta, and it is where the trail starts to climb it in the summer. It’s a great spot to get out and enjoy some snow play or just to take a few pictures of the mountain. Mt Shasta is a looming beast from here.

Highway 5 Turnout

On the way up Highway 5, this is the easiest spot to see the mountain if you only have a few minutes. There is a turnout off the highway, near the town of Dunsmuir, and you can see the mountain coming over the hills in the distance. You need a zoom lens to capture it entirely, but it is still a fun, quick viewpoint.

There are two highways that go towards Mt Shasta and that provide good viewpoints, Highway 97 and Highway 89. You are less likely to be driving on Highway 89 since it is pretty out of the way for most road trips, but Highway 97 is the road you would take to get back to Highway 5, if you went to Lava Beds National Monument. This is probably my favorite view of Mt Shasta, with the road leading directly to the mountain in front of you.

Castle Crags State Park

If you are into hiking, then this is an honorable mention. Castle Crags has a hike up to Castle Rock, and when you get up here on a clear day, you will be able to get a great view across the valley to Mt Shasta. This is another zoom lens spot, but it’s an excellent hike to go along with it. Read more about it here .

Mt Shasta Summit

Sure, this is not really a view of the mountain, but I would be remiss if I did not include the hike as one of the best ways to view it. This is a no joke hike though, so if you want to do it, consider getting a guide or practicing your mountaineering skills on another more accessible mountain. I hiked in 2018, and here is all the information on that hike .

The Museum features three large exhibit halls on lenticular clouds, the Mt. Shasta volcano, and the spiritual and supernatural beliefs associated with the mountain. 7. Wagon Creek Bridge on Lake Siskiyou

Lake Siskiyou, 2.3 miles away from Mt Shasta, is a reservoir known to give off the incredible reflection of Mt. Shasta. The Lake has a seven-mile paved walking trail that goes around it, cutting across meadows, deep forests, and everything surrounding it. Wagon Creek Bridge is an extension of one of Lake Siskiyou Trails.

The prestigious Bridge was created in 2010 and extends about 262 feet over the Lake. Visitors can admire the Lake from the arch Bridge and view waterfowls and boaters in the water body. The Lake is a hot spot for anglers as it holds numerous types of fish such as trouts and smallmouth bass.

However, ensure to check with the local Fish and Wildlife department to know which section of the water body is open to the public. Dogs are allowed around the Lake but must be on a 6-foot maximum leash. Take pictures of the magical view. The experience promises to be a memorable one.

The Park houses the outdoor Siskiyou Ice Rink, a local treasure. Several intramural sports are held in the premises sports facilities, including tennis courts, lighted softball field, skate park, pickleball courts, and a multipurpose field complex. 12. Mei Drucker Art Gallery and Gift Shoppe

15. Shasta-Trinity National Forest

Shasta-Trinity National Forest is California’s largest National Forest, covering an area of more than 2.2 million acres. The Forest features five wilderness areas, 6,278 miles of streams and rivers, and hundreds of mountain lakes.

Visitors can enjoy numerous recreational activities in the forest, including mountain climbing, hiking, camping, fishing, horseback riding, and boating. The Winter season allows visitors to enjoy snowmobiling, skiing, and snowshoeing. Pets on leashes are granted access to the recreational sites.

However, most of the recreational areas in Shasta-Trinity National Forest are accessible from May 15th to September 15th. 16. Everitt Memorial Highway

Everitt Memorial Highway is a 14-mile two-lane paved road that extends up the southwest side of Mount Shasta. The Highway is named after John Samuel Everitt -Shasta National Forest Supervisor, who lost his life while fighting the Bear Springs fire in 1934.

Everitt Memorial Highway offers a spectacular view above the tree line, and it takes about thirty minutes to drive up the road. While driving up the Highway, you’ll see notable birds, mammals, and plants.

You can drive through the road from late June till late October when it’s closed by snowfall. During the previously stated duration, you can access the Old Ski Bowl, which is a great picnicking spot. Come along with a camera to capture the magnificent scenery.

17. Gateway Peace Garden

As earlier stated, Mount Shasta is a place where spiritual seekers largely assemble; if you’re one of those people, check out the Gateway Peace Garden. The Garden, which was put in place in 2002, is a place for peaceful meditation.

The artfully contrived Garden is full of colorful spring wildflowers and altars of different religious beliefs, such as the Mother Mary and Quan Yin meditation Gardens. You can wander in a maze, add a prayer flag, view the lens-shaped cloud above the mountain close by, or marvel at the majestic surrounding.

The Gateway Peace Garden is open year-round from sunrise to sunset except during winter, when snowfalls completely cover the Garden and the trails are no longer visible. Attain inner peace in the serene Gateway Peace Garden, which aligns with the Garden’s Message ” world peace through inner peace.”

18. Castle Lake

Castle Lake is a primitive icy cirque lake lying west of Mount Shasta City. The Lake has a surface area of 47 acres and is 110 ft deep. This attraction is popular in Mount Shasta and visited by tourists.

The water body and its surroundings are filled with plants and animals such as osprey, deer, fawn lily frog, trout, red columbine, etc. Visitors can also enjoy numerous recreational activities in the attraction, including kayaking, rafting, swimming (although limited to summer months), picnicking, row boating, etc.

During winter, the Lake freezes over and allows for ice fishing, snowshoeing, ice skating, and cross-country skiing. There’s a brief and straightforward shoreline trail west of the Lake. 19. Shasta Abbey

Shasta Abbey offers teachings, spiritual counseling, annual retreats, training, and ceremonies. Visitors are taught how to meditate and given introductory retreats to explain to them the ways of a Buddhist. The Monastery incorporates the Serene Reflection Meditation tradition (Soro Zen).

Tours of the monastery are offered by appointment. During the tour, visitors can see the Budha Hall, the guest house, the Stupa, and the meditation grounds and ask any questions concerning the monastery.

21. Black Bear Diner

This historic family restaurant is a favorite among locals due to its delicious, large-sized meals. Black Bear Diner started as an inn established by a gold prospector, Sisson, after he settled down in 1861. In 1995, the premier Black Bear Diner was opened on the location of the old strawberry patches by Bob and Laurie Manley.

The restaurant has a fun, bear-themed ambiance. Everything about the restaurant is unique, down to the menu. The menu titled ‘The Black Bear Gazette’ resembles an old newspaper and even has articles on the front page. Similarly, the children’s menu was also designed with ‘The Best Tale times’ and contained kids’ activities.

The menu includes the Grizz, sweet cream pancakes, bigfoot chicken fried steak and eggs, vegetarian omelet, hot sausage patties, and Shasta scramble. Drinks are also included, such as lemonade, coffee, tea, soft drinks, and assorted juices.

23. Snow Creek Studios

This art establishment encompassing 2200 square feet, opened in 2012. The Studio was refurbished to include LED lighting and solar energy. The Studio aims to uphold a pleasant, contemporary space to showcase art and enrich the creative side of everyone. Snow Creek Studios has three sections: the studio space, gallery, and offices. In the studio space, Chris Messer, a diverse and productive local artist, paints and conducts teaching classes in different art fields.

She also organizes creative workshops to share what she knows about art journaling, process, and mixed media. Sometimes guest artists educate visitors on card-making, pastel, art business classes, and encaustic.

The gallery displays beautiful art by Chris Messer, who uses gauche, oil, watercolor, mixed media, and acrylic. Art, ceramics, fiber art, sculpture, collage, and jewelry by other artists are also found in the gallery. A fascinating experience awaits you in this location.

24. Mount Shasta Ski Park

If you are spending your winter or summer holiday in Mount Shasta, one of the best places to visit is Mount Shasta, Ski Park . 

Mount Shasta Ski Park is a ski resort that runs during winter and summer and is one of the best ski resorts in California. 

During winter, the ski resort has operations such as skiing & snowboarding, rentals, events, backcountry cabin programs, and lessons. The resort offers Disc Golf, Mountain Biking, and Scenic Chairlift Rides during summer. 

Downhill lovers have more than 400 acres and 32 trails to explore at this tourist attraction.

25. Mount Shasta Hatchery

One of the best places to visit in Mt. Shasta is Mount Shasta Hatchery . 

Around 1877, Justin H. Sisson, the owner of a local inn and tavern, started raising salmon and trout to attract visitors to his bar. 

In 1888, the California Fish Commission purchased the hatchery. 

However, when the building of the Shasta Dam on the Upper Sacramento River began in 1938, salmon could not travel to Mount Shasta Hatchery, so it had to switch to other species. 

Mount Shasta Hatchery has raised different trout, salmon, largemouth bass, catfish, perch, sturgeon, arctic grayling, and sunfish. 

If you are holidaying in Mount Shasta Hatchery from March to July, you can visit Mount Shasta Hatchery and observe how the eggs are hatched, and fry is raised. 

You can also see the change from the hatchery building to the nursery ponds, where the fry is raised until suitable to be transported to the raceway. 

Additionally, this hatchery supplies most of the eggs to other CDFW trout hatcheries and, at one period, supplies them to numerous countries worldwide. 

The hatchery has supplied trout eggs to New Zealand, Mexico, China, India, Philippines, Bangladesh and Pakistan, and other US countries, including Hawaii. 

In more than a century of operation, Mount Shasta Hatcher has raised more salmon and trout than any other hatchery around the globe.

Play in Mount Shasta: Why this Northern California mountain town has travel site's attention

With outdoor recreation opportunities, boutique shopping, hiking/biking trails and an abundance of stunning vistas, Mount Shasta is a prime spot for winter fun.

And it's only an hour's drive north of Redding and a 35-minute drive south of Yreka in far Northern California.

Mount Shasta's tourism appeal grew in popularity this year.

The mountain town placed 50th in online travel guide Travel Lemming's "50 best places to travel in 2023 ." The list features lesser-known destination spots worldwide, according to Travel Lemming. “The air is crisp, the lakes and rivers teem with trout, and cozy lodges invite you to the warmth of their stone-hearth fireplaces.”

Here are some of the things that make Mount Shasta fun for winter travelers.

Mount Shasta is home to Mt. Shasta, gateway to great outdoors

Mt. Shasta Ski Park and a variety of recreational opportunities — including downhill skiing, snowboarding, dog sledding, whitewater rafting, kayaking, fishing, climbing, boating and hunting — are a short drive away.

But Mount Shasta also has a huge network of hiking and biking trails leading in and out of town.

The Gateway Trail at 1700 Everitt Memorial Highway is a great place to start, said Shannon Shaw at the Mount Shasta Recreation and Parks Administration District office, located in Mount Shasta City Park. There's also the Lake Siskiyou Trail, an easy flat trail that loops around the lake in summer.

In winter, both trails are great for snowshoeing, Shaw said. There’s also cross-country skiing within a few miles of downtown.

The outdoor Siskiyou Ice Rink in Shastice Park on Rockfellow Drive opened Nov. 19. This park is a prime spot for young children to sled on its gently sloping hills, Shaw said.

Where to go for fine dining in Mount Shasta

Mount Shasta offers a large selection of dining choices.

Shoppers and strollers can stop at several cafés and coffee houses along Mount Shasta Boulevard.

On the south side of the boulevard is a Mount Shasta classic: Lily's restaurant serves breakfast, lunch, brunch and dinner (530-926-3372). Lily’s chefs use local and organic ingredients when available, and serve big traditional dinners and desserts. Like many restaurants in town, the menu includes vegetarian and vegan choices. Many menu items are gluten-free, restaurant staff said. Hours are 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesdays through Sundays.

Other dining spots that received stellar guest reviews on travel sites are the Tree House Restaurant and Coopers Bar & Grill on Morgan Way, both part of the Best Western Plus Tree House (530-926-3101). One of the two is always open from 6:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily, restaurant staff said. They serve full breakfast, lunch and dinner, and a weekend brunch.

For gourmet dining, check out the Highland House Restaurant at the Mount Shasta Resort on Siskiyou Lake Boulevard. The restaurant — and the resort's lounge — have giant picture windows with views of the mountain. Hours are 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesdays through Sundays.

Where to spend the night in Mount Shasta

Mount Shasta is loaded with bed-and-breakfast and boutique hotels, but book ahead of time for two reasons: They often fill up fast at the holidays, and small hotel owners may close for periods for their own winter vacations.

If you’re looking for all-inclusive overnight or weekend packages, the Mount Shasta Resort (530-466-0056) plans to start offering package deals in January 2023, said Suzanne Bentley, the resorts general manager. The resort stopped offering packages in 2020 during the worst of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The hotel is open year-round. Guests can rent a room in the alpine-style building or a cozy private cabin with a fireplace, situated on Lake Siskiyou.

There are snowshoeing and hiking trails within walking distance of the facility; and in summer, the resort attracts golfers to its 18-hole golf course.

If you’re aching after all that exercise, people can book a massage or other treatment at the Sacred Mountain Spa , located on the resort’s campus. You don't have to stay at the resort to book a spa treatment.

Mount Shasta is an arts center with crystal shops and other boutiques

Take a walk along North Mount Shasta Boulevard — Mount Shasta’s main road through downtown — to shop at dozens of boutiques and book, organic clothing, local crafts, jewelry, crystal and metaphysic product stores .

Mount Shasta is an arts center in Siskiyou County, so expect to find art galleries selling paintings, sculptures, ceramics and other art media. Some galleries also sell locally made confections, edible art.

Its proximity to outdoor recreation sites means you’ll also find upscale sporting goods stores selling everything from backpacks and dehydrated camp food to après ski fashions.

Don't forget to buy the Mt. Shasta Bar

For stocking stuffers or small Hannukah “eight nights” gifts, grab the town’s iconic candy: The Mt. Shasta Bar. It comes in milk or dark chocolate and has the mountain on the wrapper. Unlike most souvenir candy, this locally-made chocolate bar is high quality. It’s sold at checkouts at many stores on Mount Shasta Boulevard. Just ask a retailer or grocer where to find them; if their shop doesn’t have them, odds are they know a shop nearby that does.

Winter store hours may be shorter than during the summer tourist season, and some vendors close for lunch.

How to get to Mount Shasta

To arrive in downtown Mount Shasta, get off Interstate 5 at Exit 738 on to West Lake Street and park anywhere near the North Mount Shasta Boulevard intersection.

I’ve been meaning to write this post for years. The Shasta region is one of my favorite places in the whole world. It’s a remarkable spot. It’s easy to lose yourself within and it’s also a great place to explore, especially if you’re a solo female traveler in the US. A lot of people think Shasta County is only popular in the Fall and Winter months. Since the famous Mt. Shasta is known for skiing, snowboarding, etc, it’s understandable. However, to those local to the PNW/west coast, we’re partial to it all year round.

The Shasta region is built for summertime fun. It’s a beautiful area with loads of wildlife, nature, bike paths, camping, water sports, and outdoor activities. It’s also a great road trip stop to refuel.

Lake Siskiyou

This is one of my all-time favorite lakes in the US. Granted, I haven’t been to all of them but this one has a special place in my heart. I love watching the sun go down behind this lake and how friendly everyone is that passes you by.

It’s a beautiful, picturesque body of water that I could spend every summer looking at. It’s also the perfect family-friendly vacation spot. I saw tons of families there because they have a great bike path and it’s a great spot for little ones to learn to swim with floaties.

Downtown Shasta is adorably quaint with the most beautiful and picturesque mountain behind it that you’ll think it’s fake. The main area has a small town touristy vibe to it.

In all honestly, I didn’t explore the downtown area much. I promise you though, it’s a darling little ski town with a great art gallery and tons of crystal healing shops.

If you’re looking for places to eat, I recommend:

• Pipeline Craft Taps & Kitchen
• Highland House Restaurant
• Lily’s Restaurant

Camping, Fishing, Golfing, Hiking

If you love any of these summer activities, Shasta is for you. It has it all. There are a couple of fantastic campsites around Lake Siskiyou, as well as cabins for those of you not interested in “roughin’ it”. The Lake also provides great fishing with multiple trails around it. One for walkers and the other for bikers. There are multiple golf courses around the town for those looking to take it easy or practice a few rounds.

If you’re looking for hikes, I recommend these:

• Heart Lake Trail From Castle Lake (another great lake, btw)
• Lake Siskiyou Loop Trail (great for beginners bc it’s fairly flat)
• Gateway Trail and Tunnel Trail Loop (don’t be surprised if you see horses, mountain bikers & trail runners on this one)

Soft Serve Ice Cream at the General Store

This is a bit of a hidden/secret gem. There’s a general store on the other side of Lake Siskiyou that serves soft-serve ice cream and it’s so good after a full day in the sun on your paddleboard. You won’t regret grabbing a cone.

Watersports

Speaking of paddleboards, every paddle sport imaginable is allowed on the lake. Here’s a quick guide to what isn’t allowed. I brought my inflatable paddleboard and I was out there for hours.

This is a really kid-friendly area. The majority of groups had 1-2 children and they were all so quick to become friends. Many families connected over small children and it was really wonderful to watch that happen.

Castle Lake

This lake seems to be very popular amongst locals. There’s a great hiking trail that I mentioned above. This area doesn’t have the best parking but it does help limit the number of people on a given day. I think it would be chaotic otherwise. Absolutely gorgeous though and a hidden gem that’s completely surrounded by mountains.

Mount Shasta Views

I’ll never get tired of seeing that mountain. It’s everywhere you look and the main character of the town. It’s stunning and it makes me so happy.

Inexpensive

If you play your cards right, Mount Shasta can be incredibly inexpensive in the summertime. As a solo traveler, I stayed in a neighboring town and I regret not bringing my camping gear to stay at the resort. I would have felt safe and tried to make friends with neighboring campers.

I was also able to keep costs down by bringing my own water sports, packing my lunches (after stopping off at the Barryvale Grocery store ), and opting for inexpensive outdoor activities. Hiking is a free perk, my friends.

If you can’t tell, I 10 out of 10 recommend Lake Siskiyou. So many memories can be made there. Even if you’re all on your own.

The Lake Siskiyou Trail is a well-liked path for cyclists, runners, and walkers. This lake is circled by a seven-mile paved route that includes a picturesque Wagon Creek pedestrian bridge crossing. Additionally, a number of trailheads in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest, which the lake borders, invite exploration. 5. Visit Siskiyou County waterfalls.

Within a short drive to Mt. Shasta are a number of amazing gravity shows. These shifting vistas are well-liked attractions all year long and have come to symbolize adventure in Siskiyou County. While some waterfalls require a little trek, others are close to parking lots.

Hedge Creek Falls is one of the first places people visit close to Mount Shasta. Near Dunsmuir, south of the city, on Interstate 5, lies this breathtaking waterfall. On the east side of town, along the Everitt Memorial Highway, lies the trailhead for Black Butte. The majority of the dirt roads that make up the path to the trailhead include multiple turnoffs that go in the incorrect directions. A map or GPS might be useful to locate the trailhead despite a few signs pointing the way.

8. Take some time to visit Shastice Park

Shastice Park, a gorgeous city park with the mountain in the background, is located on the northeastern part of the city.
