Floating Bars In London

Laura Reynolds

Looking for a night out that'll really float your boat? London's full of bars, pubs and cafes on boats, ships and barges, dotted along the River Thames and the city's canals. Whether it's a romantic date night or lively mates' date you're planning, take a look at these waterborne drinking dens.

R.S Hispaniola, Victoria Embankment

drink boat cruise london

"We drink beer and we drink Cola, all aboard the Hispaniola"

We have no idea what that line is from — it's buried somewhere deep in our childhood, and Google's no help — but it goes through our mind every time we chug past R.S Hispaniola on a Charing Cross train on Hungerford Bridge.

Once you're firmly on Embankment, wander down the gangway onto the smart navy and white vessel for multiple drinking — and eating — options. Afternoon tea and a pre-theatre dinner menu are available, but for us, it's an ideal spot for kicking back with a cocktail and watching the river traffic floating past.

drink boat cruise london

If the weather's decent, head to the Upper Deck and choose your poison from a lengthy drinks menu including cocktails, mocktails, champagne, wine, spirits and bottled and draught beers with food available also. There's much amusement to be had  up here watching tourists on Hungerford Bridge waving at different tourists on the moving boats below, the boat captains honking their horns to whip their passengers even further into a holiday-induced frenzy.

In adverse weather, head inside to the Pinkton Parlour, where the rose-tinted decor lives up to its name (a throwback, we suspect, to a former Benefit Cosmetics residency on the boat).

As you can imagine, R.S. Hispaniola's prime position across the river from the London Eye makes it very in demand on New Year's Eve, and it plays up to the tourist crowd with a 'London Eye' cocktail, and South Bank Gin used as an ingredient in several cocktails.

Tattershall Castle, Victoria Embankment

drink boat cruise london

Tattershall Castle is R.S Hispaniola's raucous neighbour. For every sophisticated evening of cocktails and sunsets the Hispaniola offers, Tattershall Castle tempts passers by on board with lively comedy nights, themed pub quizzes and sports match screenings, that tilted red and blue chimney a beacon to anyone looking for some fun. You can even get married here (easy on that bouquet throw though — soggy roses don't look quite as fetching).

drink boat cruise london

The boat itself has an interesting history — she was used as a passenger ferry on the Humber Estuary in the 1970s. Her London debut was as a floating art gallery, before she realised that her true calling in life was serving up booze to all that sail in her.

These days, gin is a prominent feature on the drinks menu, with at least 10 varieties available to mix and match with a selection of tonics. Spritz, spirits, wines, beer, ciders and cocktails combine to form a compelling reason to delay your return to dry land for as long as possible. Fish and chips is the specialist food, but the a la carte menu also offers everything from burgers to pies to lamb shanks. There's a separate kids' menu for sailors in training, and afternoon tea is also served.

Tamesis Dock, Lambeth

drink boat cruise london

Definitely more of a pub than a bar, Tamesis Dock does a decent job of feeling like a characterful local boozer — as long as you're not looking for anything too traditional, and you've got your sea legs.

The converted 1930s Dutch barge has an eclectic collection of benches, tables and bar stools up on deck, and with views of the Houses of Parliament, it's a relaxing way to spend the afternoon. This being London, if the weather's not on your side, head inside, where you'll find the wooden bar and an eclectic range of decor, from traditional nautical bells and navigation maps to disco balls, pop art, and a chandelier made from glass bottles — but the small windows mean that the gentle rolling motion is the only hint you're on a boat. Descend the colourful stairs to our favourite part of the boat, a rather snug area full of charmingly mismatched leather sofas and bar stools. Much more boaty.

Booze-wise you're looking at beer and cider rather than margaritas and pina coladas. It's a standard menu of bottled beers from craft, international and local breweries, with plenty of wine options available too. Food is typical pub fare — chicken wings, nachos, fish and chips, burgers

Bar & Co, Temple Pier

drink boat cruise london

We'd give this one a miss on nights when FC Barcelona are playing — it's the official home of Penya Blaugrana London, the London outpost of FC Barcelona's Supporters Club. Tennis, rugby and basketball are also shown regularly, so to avoid finding yourself on a floating sports bar, check the fixtures before you turn up.

Beyond sport, Bar&Co is something of a party boat, with a bar, restaurant and nightclub packed onto the vessel, moored at Temple Pier. Up on deck there's a small bar, but most of the action takes place below deck, where there's a seating, dancing and DJ area for up to 130 people.

Barge East, Hackney Wick

drink boat cruise london

Its elegant shape and fabric, sail-style signs always put us in mind of a pirate ship when we catch a glimpse of Barge East . In reality, it's an old Dutch barge, but you get the feeling that magical things could happen on board, concocted up by the three childhood friends who bought the boat and opened Barge East.

Admirably, many of the drinks are stocked from local east London suppliers. The East London Liquor Co's products are used in Barge East's cocktails, Truman's Brewery's beers appear on the beer list, intermingled with Dutch offerings as a nod to the vessel's heritage. Even the tea is sourced from the London Tea Co. For those looking for a teetotal night out, Dalston Sodas are the alternative to yet another warm orange juice.

Just as much thought has gone into the impressive seasonal food menu, which is far more sophisticated than your average bar menu — think pork belly sausage rolls, pan-fried sea bream, garlic oyster mushrooms...

It's a predominantly outdoor affair, that aforementioned sail being erected as a canopy to stave off the London chill. Fairy lights trace the ship's outline, making for romantic reflections in the water on calm summer nights.

Alfred Le Roy, Hackney Wick

drink boat cruise london

When it's not cruising the River Lee Navigation and east London canals, you'll find Alfred Le Roy moored up alongside Crate Brewery in Hackney Wick. The cocktail bar is a versatile space, the retractable roof kept firmly on in winter to create a cosy bar, but thrown off in summer for an outside drinking area.

Whatever season you visit, it's surprisingly spacious, but if you want to see it in action, book onto a food and drink cruise and feel the wind in your hair as you chug up and down the canals while indulging in cheese, breads, charcuterie meats, and olives, washed down with cocktails, wine, beer, spirits, prosecco, cider and soft drinks.

drink boat cruise london

Alfred Le Roy features on the Club Soda Guide — a guide to help mindful drinkers seek out low- and no-alcohol drinks in London — for its top-notch mocktails.

The Milk Float, Hackney Wick

drink boat cruise london

Moored up at Hackney Wick (yep, the canal's in demand around these parts), where the River Lee Navigation meets the Hertford Union Canal, The Milk Float (puntastic name...) is ideally placed for refreshments after a walk through the Olympic Park. It's a cafe and bar, so you'll find Aperol Spritz and locally-made ginger beer on the menu, alongside knickerbocker glorys. Thursday is tapas night, the barbecue gets fired up in summer, and if you're feeling fired up yourself, you can hire Moo Canoes from the venue and go for a paddle along the canal.

Feng Shang Princess Chinese restaurant, Regent's Park

drink boat cruise london

Even with its claim to be "the best Chinese restaurant in Primrose Hill" (never mind that it's the only Chinese restaurant in Primrose Hill, eh?), including Feng Shang Princess on a list of bars feels a bit cheeky, as it is predominantly a restaurant. But if we're talking floating experiences in London, it's got to be mentioned. Located in the Cumberland Basin on Regent's Canal, we've witnessed canal boats mooring up alongside the Chinese temple-style two-storey boat and collecting their dinner from its windows, which has to make it the most unique 'drive-thru' restaurant in London.

drink boat cruise london

But back to the booze, and where Feng Shang shines is its cocktail menu, sticking firmly to the classics (think Bellini, Mojito, Kir Royale, Pina Colada). As just shy of £15 a pop, it's probably not the cheapest drink you'll ever have on a boat, but on a summer's evening, with boats pootling by on the canal, and red Chinese lanterns blowing in the breeze as you tuck into your Kung Pao Chicken, it's one of the more relaxing.

(If floating restaurants are your thing, check out the London Shell Co ).

Darcie & May Green, Paddington

drink boat cruise london

The ever expanding Daisy Green chain of Aussie coffee shops took to the water with Darcie & May Green , a pair of boats moored in Paddington Basin, overlooking the Grand Union Canal.

The barges are moored up end to end, and easily identifiable by their psychedelic livery, designed by pop artist Sir Peter Blake. Darcie's your lady for all-day dining, whereas May's a go-to for coffee and cocktails.

7. Feng Shang Princess, Regent’s Park

8. Tamesis Dock , Vauxhall

Tamesis Dock is a converted 1930s Dutch barge-turned-pub, moored between Lambeth and Vauxhall Bridge. • dulcigouge 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Not relaxing… Booked this hoping for a relaxing cruise along the River and a nice dinner. Dinner was sub par and the cruise was anything but relaxing. It was a party bus on water. There was a group of drunk people who were so loud combined with overly loud music that we weren’t even able to converse. Not enjoyable at all and we couldn’t wait to get off the boat. They charged for water and soft drinks which is crazy considering how much they charge for dinner and at the end the waiters hold a tray for tips as you walk out which is so tacky. • llowmanuk 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles An excellent afternoon tea experience We had an excellent afternoon tea while seeing all the sights along the Thames. The food was lovely, the staff were helpful and welcoming and the boat was great. We didn’t pay extra for a window seat but there are windows all around the boat so you can see anyway and you can go up on to the top deck when you want to get a better look at things. The tour takes you firm to Battersea and back to Tower Hill. We had the option to purchase extra drinks but there was absolutely no pressure to do so. We decided to as it was a special occasion and drinks were very reasonable, especially for London. We set off and we’re soon served drinks and afternoon tea. Then we spent sone time on the top deck as the weather was good. I liked the fact that the first part we had tea and could talk and the second half had a commentary by the crew which was very informative. I had a little trouble initially in booking the cruise but was quickly assisted and the booking was sorted. The four of us really enjoyed the 90 minute cruise. The price was good for afternoon tea in London especially with the cruise as well. I will definitely look at sone of the other trips they offer. Read more Written 27 February 2024

  • NorthStar53208003261 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Bad management, money grab, avoid. This has been a real let down. I’ve booked this for my wife’s 30th birthday. The quality of the food was Tesco standard. The lights have been kept on causing reflections in the windows obscuring views and ruining the sight seeing aspect. There was live music, however it was very loud and tasteless, you had to almost shout to your partner in order to be heard. The only aspect of this tour which was worthwhile was the views from the upper deck, away from the noise and the bad food. This whole tour felt like a tactless money grab, I’m sure the staff was underpaid, the organisation none existent. The boat didn’t know where it wanted to go, with constant stops, changing directions, at one point parking next to another boat for no reason. And to top it off at the end of the tour the crew stood with their hands out for donations, which further gave evidence that they are underpaid. This was a complete rip off, like many other things you will find on virgin experience. I’ve been on another Thames cruise some years back and that was amazing, I was hoping that this would have been the same but it seems like this was done by a different company or things have gone way downhill. I was just really embarrassed in front of my wife, I blame myself for not doing more research. Read more Written 16 February 2024

We had 2 courses followed by tea/coffee. The food was amazing, chicken moist, sauce tasted fab. We didn't expect such great food! The boat was clean and tidy. The toilets were big and clean. The staff were friendly and service was a good speed. There were 40 of us in our group ,plus others, this size of party didn't seem to affect attentiveness at all. Fabulous. Only thing to note is that drinks are extra. Read more Written 8 February 2024
  • Tarheelatthebeach 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles VERY disappointed - apparently they can cancel and not give you your money back We got on the boat, got to the NEXT stop, and they canceled the tour due to winds and forced everyone to get off. We were aboard a total of 15 minutes and got dumped far from where we were heading. I was denied a refund because I booked through TA and not directly through the boat company. Direct was giving refunds, TA was not. Very very disappointed. This was supposed to be a 24-hour pass for the two of us to enjoy the city, and instead we got 15 minutes and a taxi fee to get where we wanted to go. Read more Written 6 February 2024
  • U8982CDkarenm 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Good cruise along the Thames - book ahead to save money Booked ahead to save on booking (would advise to do this - but wasn't busy in January, but saved a third of the price) Picked up at Westminster pier - was great, as got to view the Houses of Parliament before left. We were booked to get off at Greenwich - cruise takes about 40 mins (could do this much quicker, but it does give you chance to see things along the bank) There is a commentary running about certain points of interest. The return commentary was better by a member of staff. Boat had indoor & outdoor seating. Lots of seats. Bar/cafe available & toilets Read more Written 29 January 2024
  • jackie m 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Not a true hop on and off adventure. This was advertised as hop on hop off tour with 4 piers. The cruise only stopped at 2. They should give you highlights to see and eat along the way if this is truly a hop on tour. Not sure why we only stop at Westminster and Tower Bridge. The tour guides were hilarious, they made the trip memorable. For the price of 60 for a couple, I feel like it is overpriced. Just do the Uber boat for much cheaper price to see the sights. You're welcome. Read more Written 28 January 2024

11 London boat restaurants to dine on in 2023

London boat restaurants

Disclosure: I may earn a small commission from the companies or products mentioned in this post.

Here in London, we love a quirky restaurant . Whether that’s a supper club on an abandoned tube carriage , eating in the pitch black or dining at the top of one of the city’s tallest skyscrapers . But one style of dining which often seems to float (geddit!?) under people’s radar is London’s floating restaurants.

There aren’t that many places to eat on a boat in London. But the few floating restaurants you do find are definitely worth adding to your London foodie bucket list.

With some of the coolest settings, spectacular views, and unbeatable menus in the capital, these are the 10 best London boat restaurants to dine on in 2023…

Static Boat Restaurants in London

Moored on London’s many canals or the bank of the River Thames, these are the best static boat restaurants in London…

Darcie & May Green

Where? Paddington.

Darcie and May Green colourful boat restaurant in London Paddington

This super Instagrammable spot in Paddington combines two of London’s coolest dining trends; floating restaurants and pretty brunch cafes.

A member of the Daisy Green Collection – the renowned Aussie cafe brand that serves up some of the tastiest avocado toast in London – Darcie & May Green are two moored barges floating on the Grand Union Canal. The colourful barges were designed exclusively by the ‘godfather’ of British pop art, Sir Peter Blake.

With both indoor seating and an upstairs terrace to choose from, the pretty floating restaurant is open from early morning to late at night.

You can pop by for a morning coffee or enjoy their signature all-day Aussie brunch menu . Then for dinner, pick from dishes including halloumi fries, roasted aubergine, chicken parmigiana and tiramisu lamington. All paired with a few drinks from their fantastic cocktail list of course.

Darcie & May isn’t currently taking bookings. Walk-ins only.

The Cheese Barge

The cheese barge on a boat in London

Quality cheese and fine wine… On a boat… In the sunshine… What more could you want!?

The Cheese Barge can be found on a large double-decker boat moored on the Regents Canal in Paddington, a short distance from Darcie & May Green.

The unique floating restaurant prides itself on its unbeatable offering of British cheeses.

The main dining room is open daily for lunch and dinner, serving a delicious seasonal cheese-focused menu.

Or for a more casual summer get-together with friends, you can head up to the boat’s rooftop terrace to enjoy a variety of cheese boards and grilled cheese sandwiches, accompanied by a great wine selection.

Love cheese? Check out more of the best cheese restaurants in London .

With two of London’s best floating restaurants sitting right next to each other in the Paddington basin, it’s almost impossible to choose between the two. My advice for the ultimate foodie day out would be to head to Darcie & May Green for brunch, then take a walk up to Little Venice and along the Regents Canal, before returning to the Cheese Barge roof terrace for mid-afternoon cheese and wine. Treat yourself!

Tattershall Castle

Where? Victoria Embankment.

The Pub on the Thames boat restaurant in London

Also known as ‘The Pub on the Thames’, The Tattershall Castle has some of the best views of any restaurant on a boat in London. Its prime location on Victoria Embankment means that you can enjoy dinner and drinks overlooking some of London’s most iconic sites, including the London Eye and the Houses of Parliament.

But just because it has a 5* location, this doesn’t mean you’ll be paying 5* prices. The casual floating dining spot has an affordable menu of British classics including fish and chips, burgers, pies, platters, and more.

Being a pub, Tattershall Castle also hosts weekly comedy nights, live music and DJs, and a monthly pub quiz.

The Waterside Cafe

Where? Little Venice.

Boat restaurant in Little Venice London

Dating back to 1995, The Waterside Cafe is London’s original floating cafe.

Located on a historic barge in the canal basin of Little Venice, this peaceful spot serves breakfasts, light lunches, afternoon teas, and freshly baked cakes that you can enjoy inside the air-conned boat or out on the lovely terrace on a sunny day.

The Waterside Cafe is the ideal place to grab a coffee and a light bite before heading on a walk along the Regents Canal to Camden Town (my favourite walk in London!) .

The cafe is only small and you can’t book a table in advance. But even if you can’t find somewhere to sit at the cafe, you can always grab a drink and slice of cake to go and enjoy it somewhere else along the canal – there are plenty of benches and other places to sit by the water.

If you’re looking for a boat restaurant on the Thames for a special occasion, The Yacht is the place to go.

Set on a luxury 1920s motor yacht, the elegant restaurant serves a modern European menu, with floor-to-ceiling windows offering panoramic views along the Thames and across to the Southbank.

There’s also a swanky 1920s cocktail lounge to enjoy a couple of drinks before or after your meal, and a terrace area that can be hired for private events and parties.

Whether you visit by day or by night, this sophisticated spot is guaranteed to impress.

Where? Hackney Wick.

Barge East Hackney Wick London

Barge East is a 118-year-old Dutch barge turned award-winning floating restaurant and bar on Hackney’s canals, just a short walk from Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and Westfield shopping centre in Stratford.

With a charming rustic interior and an outdoor deck overlooking the East London skyline, the restaurant serves a luxury seasonal British set menu designed by head chef Stefano Campione.

The unique location combined with their fantastic food even won Barge East the title of #1 restaurant in London on TripAdvisor in both 2019 and 2020! Pretty impressive right?

If you can’t get reservations on the barge itself, be sure to check out its lovely riverside garden, with stunning canal views, heated seating areas, and its own food and drink offering.

Feng Shang Princess

Where? Primrose Hill/Regents Park.

drink boat cruise london

Feng Shang Princess is London’s only ‘floating Chinese restaurant’, sitting on the Regents Canal between Regents Park and Camden Town .

The unusual London restaurant has an authentic Chinese look both inside and out, complete with plenty of traditional red Chinese lanterns, and serves a menu of delicious Chinese cuisine, fine wine, cocktails and champagnes.

Rumour has it, Feng Shang Princess was Paul McCartney’s favourite Chinese restaurant in the city.

Cruising Boat Restaurants in London

The London Dinner Cruise

Where? River Thames.

Boat on the River Thames

Best known for their sightseeing boat trips along the River Thames in central London, City Cruises also host regular showboat dinner cruises.

On The London Dinner Cruise, you’ll enjoy a 4-course dinner and live cabaret show while taking in some of the capital’s most famous landmarks, including the London Eye, Tower Bridge and St Pauls Cathedral.

Certainly a little more gimmicky than some of the other boat restaurants in London, The London Dinner Cruise is still a super fun option for tourists wanting to see more of the city or for locals looking for a London dining experience with a twist.

London Shell Co. Prince Regent

Where? Regents Canal.

drink boat cruise london

Enjoy a seafood dinner cruise along the beautiful Regents Canal onboard London Shell Co.’s Prince Regent canal boat. The concept was launched just a few years ago by siblings Harry and Leah Lobek and has very quickly become one of the most popular and in-demand boat restaurants in London.

On this luxury dinner cruise, you’ll be served a set menu of the finest British seafood, with dishes changing daily to focus on the freshest locally sourced ingredients and specially selected wine pairings.

The small intimate setting also gives the restaurant a supper club atmosphere, so don’t be surprised if you end up leaving with new friends as well as new memories.

London Shell Co. has also recently opened their first permanently moored floating restaurant in London; The Grand Duchess in Paddington. Their static boat restaurant also serves a menu of fresh fish and artisan wines.

Bateaux London

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Bateaux London (@bateauxlondon)

One of the most elegant and unique riverboat restaurants on the Thames, Bateaux London’s Green Room will have you floating through central London in what looks like a giant greenhouse.

This upscale dinner cruise will take you past London’s most famous landmarks on its famous glass-walled boat, meaning you won’t miss a single sight no matter where you sit. You’ll also be serenaded by relaxing live music along the way, making it one of the most romantic boat restaurants on the Thames.

The dinner menu consists of contemporary European dishes, all made fresh using seasonal produce in the state-of-the-art onboard kitchen.

Skuna BBQ Boats

Where? Canary Wharf.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Skuna Boats (@skunaboats)

From high-end dining to DIY BBQs, there’s a London boat restaurant to suit everyone.

Skuna Boats offer what is definitely one of the most unique dining experiences in London ; a self-drive BBQ boat.

Seating up to 9 people, the unusual boats come with a built-in BBQ and utensils. All you have to do is bring the food and drinks and set sail around the waterways of Canary Wharf.

The Best Afternoon Tea Cruise in London – A Guide To Afternoon Tea On The Thames

Tuck into tasty sandwiches, cakes and scones while seeing sights including big ben and tower bridge on the best afternoon tea cruise in london.

I’m a big fan of being a tourist in my own city. London might be my home, but there are still plenty of amazing sights and experiences on my bucket list . I’ve been around the London Eye, explored the Tower of London, watched the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace, taken a food tour in Borough Market and even climbed over The O2!

Up at The O2 climb

So, what next? Well, I’ve finally ticked off a big one – having a luxurious afternoon tea while cruising down the River Thames!

I’ve passed these river cruises countless times and always thought it looked like such an appealing experience. I’ve gazed through the panoramic windows and watched the guests with their pretty towers of afternoon tea in front of them, as they meander past the city’s most famous sights.

Afternoon tea platter

I was really excited to get on board and see what the experience was like for myself. I booked via Viator who offer really great flexible tickets with their option to ‘reserve now and pay later’. Whether you’re a tourist visiting London for the first time and looking for some fun experiences or you’re a local and fancy a treat, my guide will explain exactly what to expect on an afternoon tea cruise in London .

Seeing the London Eye from a different angle

Everything You Need To Know Before Taking An Afternoon Tea Cruise in London

What happens on a river thames afternoon tea cruise.

This experience  is the perfect combination of delicious food and sightseeing. You’ll start the trip near the Tower of London and cruise upstream to Battersea. Once there, the boat turns around and cruises back down the river down to Tower Bridge. You even get to pass under this beautiful bridge before docking back at the Tower of London.

Travelling under Tower Bridge on an afternoon tea river cruise in London

Once seated you’ll be offered hot drinks and served with a tower of afternoon tea delights! There are sweet and savoury items including sandwiches, scones and cakes. Once you’ve finished you may wish to sit on the upper deck and enjoy the views, while listening to an interesting commentary packed full of interesting facts.

How long is a River Thames afternoon tea cruise in London?

The cruise lasts an hour and a half. I boarded the cruise at 3:15pm and we departed at 3:30pm. We arrived back at Tower Pier at 5:00pm. These times may vary by day and season, so check when you book!

What is the food like on a River Thames afternoon tea cruise in London?

I was really impressed with the menu and food quality on this river cruise! It was generous and tasty, with two plates of sweet treats and one of savoury.

Afternoon tea river cruise London

On the bottom layer of the traditional afternoon tea stand was a plate with eight triangle sandwiches containing four different fillings: egg mayonnaise and cress, smoked salmon, cream cheese and cucumber, chicken and salad and cheese and pickle. The egg mayo and smoked salmon were my favourites. They were seasoned really well.

On the next layer were lots of gorgeous little cakes and pastries! If you’ve got a sweet tooth, you’ll be in heaven at this point! As with the sandwiches, there were two of each item. We had mini chocolate eclairs, pretty strawberry tarts, delicate little Victoria sponges and lemon drizzle cakes with lemon curd filling. This lemon cake was my favourite – it was so zesty with an indulgent curd lining the centre.

Tasty sweet treats on the afternoon tea platter

On the top layer were four mini scones with a large pot of clotted cream and two pots of strawberry jam. As I spread mine with cream first and then jam, I looked around the room seeing how many others had gone with this combo, and how many with the controversial opposite! As I mentioned, it was a really generous afternoon tea. I couldn’t finish it all – that’s how substantial it was!

The boat also caters for vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free diets. You just need to make sure these are pre-booked before your trip.

What drinks are available on a River Thames afternoon tea cruise in London?

As this is an afternoon tea cruise, you’ll be able to drink as many cups of tea as you like! In fact, the same goes for coffee – it’s unlimited for the duration of the cruise. There’s an option to order decaf too.

Getting ready for Afternoon Tea on the CityCruises boat

Something that’s great about this Thames River cruise is that there are lots of other drinks available via the bar. These include alcoholic beverages including Champagne, Prosecco and spirits, plus soft drinks such as orange juice, Coca-Cola and sparkling water.

I saw lots of people enjoying their afternoon tea with a cuppa, then upgrading to a glass of bubbly for the return journey!

What sights do you see on a River Thames afternoon tea cruise in London?

This cruise is an amazing way to see a lot of the most famous sights in London over a short period of time. Here are just a few of the key places you’ll see:

  • The Tower of London
  • Tower Bridge
  • HMS Belfast
  • St. Paul’s Cathedral
  • Tate Modern
  • The Houses of Parliament
  • The London Eye
  • Battersea Power Station

Is there a commentary on board this river Thames cruise?

When we set off on the cruise there was a brief safety announcement. I wondered if there would be any information about the sights. We had two Dutch tourists next to us who were visiting London for the first time and we started the trip by telling them about some of the landmarks ourselves!

Sitting on the top deck enjoying the commentary

However, once we started the return journey one of the crew members took to the microphone and delivered a great commentary. It was full of interesting facts about the buildings with plenty of comedic moments too! Even for a local like me, I learned a lot of new things, so this isn’t a tour that’s just for international tourists. He got everyone involved too, waving at people on the bridges above us and shouting out a few things too!

Afternoon tea river cruise London

Are London afternoon tea cruises good value for money?

At the moment this London cruise costs £43 per adult and £33 per child, which I think is excellent value. You get a really substantial meal (I couldn’t finish it!) as well as the lovely experience of cruising along the river learning about the sights.

Useful information for a London afternoon tea cruise

Keep an eye on the weather forecast. I think the best experience is when you can go outside for some of the journey, so I’d recommend a dry day. With Viator you can reserve now and pay later, so you should be able to guarantee you’ll go on a good day!

Be sure to check where your cruise departs from. There are several piers along the river, each with different companies operating. The cruise I was on departed from Tower Pier, directly in front of the Tower of London.

Lovely views on the Thames cruise

Allow plenty of time to get there. The boats have strict schedules so they won’t be able to wait for you!

There’s no dress code for the cruise so you can dress smart like you’re going for tea with the Queen, or relax in more casual attire!

All tables are allocated in advance and window seats are usually only available to those who have pre-booked them (at an extra cost). Wherever you are seated you’ll have a good view out of the panoramic windows. Once you’re on the return journey you can choose any seat you like on the top deck.

The tables are very close together, so if you’re visiting as a two, you might be seated right next to two other people.

You can bring kids on this Thames cruise! Infants are from age 0-2 and travel for free. Children are 3-12 years of age and will require a child’s ticket (£33).

City Cruises

City Cruises

  • Things to do
  • Walks and tours
  • Victoria Embankment

City Cruises operate on a hop-on, hop-off basis and run from Westminster, London Eye, Tower and Greenwich Piers with commentary along the way. The River Red Rover ticket allows unlimited one-day cruising; there's also the Rail and River Rover ticket allowing unlimited one-day travel by river and on the DLR. Single or return tickets are available for shorter journeys, too. The London Showboat is an evening dinner and dance cruise running from Westminster Pier. Afternoon tea and lunch cruises are another popular option during peak periods.

Thames Rockets

Thames Rockets

  • Ships and boats

This slick RIB (ridged inflatable boat) operation offers a thrilling, high-speed ride on the Thames. You can book by phone or online, or just turn up and pay on the day at the London Eye Ticket Office. Arrive 20 minutes before the off to be kitted out with a waterproof jacket, a life jacket and goggle-style visors (fun in itself). The trip starts calmly enough and the guide will keep kids and adults entertained with fun facts and celebrity stories. But once the boat passes Wapping, it’s pedal to the floor all the way to Canary Wharf.

Tate to Tate Boat

Tate to Tate Boat

Running every 20 to 30 minutes, the boat service connecting London’s two Tate galleries, Tate Modern and Tate Britain, takes you through the heart of London, with plenty to see on both banks (head to the outdoor deck at the back of the boat for the best views). The catamaran service boasts specially commissioned exterior and interior designs by artist Damien Hirst, but there’s no commentary, so take a map.

Thames Clippers

A daily commuter service operates every 20 minutes calling at all major central London piers. On event nights at The O2, the River Bus Express operates a fast direct shuttle service from London Eye (Waterloo) and London Bridge with optional champagne upgrades. There’s no tour guide on board, but you can download a free app for an audio commentary.

Hurtling about the Thames at 30 knots (roughly 35mph) is the closest thing we’ve got to a white-knuckle ride in central London. It takes just under 40 minutes to travel from Westminster to Tower Bridge. Then the turbo engines kick in and you’re off, bumping about on the open water between Tower Bridge and Canary Wharf, turning in terrifyingly tight figures of eight. It’s the quickest, most thrilling way to travel the Thames.

Vintage Red Bus Tour and Thames Cruise

Vintage Red Bus Tour and Thames Cruise

Two tours in one. The first, departing from Victoria Coach Station on a restored double-decker bus, will take in views of Westminster Abbey, Big Ben, the Houses of Parliament and the London Eye, Westminster Abbey and Tower of London. The second is a cruise on the River Thames passing Shakespeare’s Globe, Cleopatra’s Needle and London Bridge before arriving at Embankment pier, where you hop back on the bus and head for Buckingham Palace. The tour will finish back at Victoria Coach Station.

Turks Launches

Turks Launches

Turks Launches have been operating boat tours along south-west London’s pretty stretch of Thames for 300 years. Running from Richmond Pier to Hampton Court, their routes pack in more historic sites than you might realise, including the seventeenth-century pile Ham House, Eel Pie Island (where Rod Stewart and The Rolling Stones used to party), and Teddington Lock’s Dunkirk Memorial. Turks tours run daily from March until September; look out for special disco and jazz cruises during peak months.

London Waterbus Company

London Waterbus Company

  • Camden Market

Navigate Regent’s Canal in a narrowboat with the London Waterbus Company. Trips run along the Regent’s Canal linking Little Venice, Regent’s Park, London Zoo and Camden Lock. Warwick Avenue is the closest tube if you’re catching the boat from Little Venice. There’s no advance-booking option – these tours are first come, first served – so if you arrive at peak time, just before lunch, you might have to queue.

Canal Museum Tunnel Boat Trip

Canal Museum Tunnel Boat Trip

  • King’s Cross

These trips are best suited to the brave. Regent’s Canal’s tunnel – built in 1820 – is long, dark, dank and three quarters of a mile long. Once upon a time, boats normally pulled by horses on the towpath had to be inched through the tunnel by a process of ‘legging’ – with the men on board having to brace their legs against the tunnel walls to power the boat along. The tunnel tours take place during the summer, and tickets also includes admission to the London Canal Museum proper. There are only 12 places on each boat tour, so booking is definitely recommended.

Jason’s Trip

Jason’s Trip

  • Little Venice

Jason’s Trip navigates the picturesque route along Regent’s Canal from Little Venice, through Regent’s Park, on to Camden Lock and back again. The boat is more than 100 years old and the trip, which includes a live historical commentary and lasts for 45min each way, has been a feature on the canal since 1951. Tours run from the first week of April right through to the first week of November.

Jenny Wren

  • Camden Town

Hop aboard for an hour and a half's cruise from Camden Lock, past London Zoo in Regent's Park, through the tunnel to Robert Browning’s Island at Little Venice and back to Walker’s Quay. A commentary is included on the cruise, and picnic lunches are available from the company’s waterside restaurant. If you prefer the idea of more formal onboard dining, try the My Fair Lady cruising restaurant boat, operated by the same company.

Bow Boat Company

Bow Boat Company offers a more bespoke kind of canal tour. Its cute narrowboat seats up to 12 people and can be hired (complete with skipper and tour guide) for special-occasion tours of east London’s waterways. You can decide exactly how long you want to tour for, and precisely where you’d like to stop. The comprehensive ‘east London loop’ takes in everything from the Olympic Park to Victoria Park and stretches out over a leisurely five hours; a shorter tour from Hackney’s buzzy Broadway Market to bustling King’s Cross takes just two hours.

It was an amazing cruise. The commentary on-board was enjoyable. you can explore a lot, as you can get down at various piers. Remember to exchange your voucher with tickets at the counter. it is very convenient and cheap to book because at the location the price of the tickets were higher.
