Asian Tour unveils early 2023 schedule ahead of strongest-ever season

men's asian golf tour

The Asian Tour has unveiled its 2023 schedule through May, for what promises to be the finest start to a season the Tour has ever enjoyed.

The campaign will commence in Saudi Arabia, at the most lucrative event of the year, before being followed by an exciting blend of established and new tournaments, including four International Series events.

The impressive schedule boasts a total of 11 tournaments contested over 14 weeks, starting with the $5 million PIF Saudi International — won dramatically by American Harold Varner III this year when he holed a 92-foot eagle putt on the 72nd hole – at Royal Greens Golf & Country Club, near Jeddah, from February 2-5.

The Tour will then journey to two inaugural International Series tournaments in Oman and then Qatar – marking the first time the International Series will have visited the Middle East. Al Mouj Golf will host the former event, while Doha Golf Club will stage the latter.

These will be the first of an expanded 10 International Series events in 2023, with International Series stops to follow in Hua Hin, Thailand, in March, and Cam Ranh, Vietnam the following month. The International Series Thailand launched the International Series earlier this year and saw American Sihwan Kim triumph at Black Mountain Golf Club, while the Tour visits the spectacular KN Golf Links for the first edition of the Vietnam event. This will be the first time the Asian Tour will return to Vietnam in seven years.

The New Zealand Open makes a popular return to the calendar following a two-year COVID-19 enforced break in the first week of March at Millbrook Resort in Queenstown – the tournament’s home since 2014.

The DGC Open, inaugurated in the 2022 season, will also be staged in March at the historic Delhi Golf Club, as well as the Tour’s long-awaited return to Hong Kong with a new event at one of the region’s most iconic golfing venues, the Hong Kong Golf Club.

“We are very proud to announce the start of the 2023 season, hot off the heels of a tremendous 2022. It is fantastic to see us carry the momentum of the season we have just completed and start the new season at full pace.” said Cho Minn Thant, Commissioner & CEO, Asian Tour.

“The Asian Tour is absolutely thrilled with how the schedule looks. It reaches a wide range of exciting destination, offers extremely lucrative purses, world-class venues and a great balance of established and new events.

“The PIF Saudi International, a truly global golfing event, is the perfect way to start the season and sets the tone for what will be, unquestionably, the strongest season in the history of the Asian Tour.”

Anthony kim will tee it up in a non-liv golf event next week, share this article.

Anthony Kim is going to play three straight weeks in his return to professional golf.

On Saturday, the 38-year-old carded his best round with LIV Golf, a 2-over 72 at LIV Golf Hong Kong . He sits 8 over, tied with Phil Mickelson, heading into the final round. Kim’s second round included four birdies, his most in his five rounds yet.

Next week, though LIV Golf doesn’t have an event, he will join roughly 20 other golfers from the circuit at the Asian Tour’s International Series Macau. Also in the field are Patrick Reed, Ian Poulter and Sergio Garcia, among others.

International Series Macau will be at Macau Golf and Country Club in China. It’s the second International Series event of the year, with Carlos Ortiz winning the first two weeks ago in Oman.

The Asian Tour has a 10-year, $300 million partnership with LIV Golf. The circuit also awards world ranking points. Last year, Andy Ogletree earned a season-long exemption into LIV for winning the Asian Tour’s Order of Merit.

Kim, a three-time PGA Tour winner, returned to professional golf last week after more than a decade away . After not beating anyone last week, he is ahead of only Hudson Swafford heading to the final round in China.

Asian legends tip Hideki Matsuyama to enjoy golden run

Change Text Size

If Hideki Matsuyama beats the strongest field in golf and becomes the first Japanese winner at THE PLAYERS Championship this week, those who blazed the trail for Asian golf before him will be the least surprised.

Matsuyama, who is now the winningest Asian golfer on the PGA TOUR with nine victories, makes his ninth start at THE PLAYERS Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass on Thursday with his sights set firmly on the coveted swinging golfer trophy which comes with winning the TOUR’s flagship $25 million showpiece. THE PLAYERS celebrates its 50th anniversary this week.

The 32-year-old Asian superstar holds three top-10s at THE PLAYERS, including a solo fifth last year, a career-best 63 at TPC Sawgrass which he shot in the first round in 2020 before the event was canceled, and has won once and finished T12 in his last two starts.

Last month, he rewrote a page in golf history by breaking a tie with K.J. Choi of Korea for most victories by an Asian player after a closing 62 saw him erase a six-shot deficit and win The Genesis Invitational by three strokes. The stars were out at The Riviera Country Club back then, and are gathered here again at TPC Sawgrass, often touted as the purest test in golf.

Hideki Matsuyama makes six-shot comeback for historic win at Genesis

Choi, who now plays on PGA TOUR Champions, said: “My first memory of Hideki was that he was different. If I had to describe him, he is like a jumbo jet, like something I really want to buy. All his attributes, the impact when hit hits a golf ball, his posture and the way he treats others are different about him. He has the right fundamentals. I knew if he kept these qualities consistently, he would be a great player. There is something special about him.”

After Matsuyama surpassed Shigeki Maruyama with a fourth PGA TOUR victory in early 2017, the latter set his younger compatriot a lofty goal to reach nine wins, one more than the mark held by Choi. Maruyama now expects Matsuyama to also raise his major tally following an historic 2021 Masters triumph which sent Japan golf into a delirium.

In a video message, Maruyama said: “You and I have spoken and made promises about becoming the winningest Asian player, and now you’ve broken the record. You already have one major, and now the next goal should be to get the other three. You’ve got the U.S. Open, PGA Championship and The Open Championship remaining but I hope you can show us all the “Sunday Hideki” winning form and complete the series.”

Japan golf legend Isao Aoki, the first Asian winner on the PGA TOUR when he won the 1983 Sony Open in Hawaii, also offered a congratulatory message. “I may have been the first Asian to win, but after winning your ninth championship, you have now become the winningest Asian in history. What an amazing achievement. We are so proud of you and look forward to seeing what else you will do in your historic career. Now hurry and get your next win,” said Aoki.

Choi believes Matsuyama’s mental strength and temperament have been key ingredients for his success, aside from his tremendous ball-striking skills, where he is now ranked 17th in the world after starting the year in 46th place following a 2023 season which yielded only one top-10. His putting remains an Achilles heel – he has been ranked outside the top 100 in Strokes Gained: Putting over the years – although he has shown marked improvements on the greens in recent times.

“Hideki doesn’t get riled up when he is playing well or exasperated when he isn’t,” said Choi, who is one-up on Matsuyama as the Korean won THE PLAYERS in 2011. “He controls his emotions well, focuses on his game and is never afraid of any challenges. He is like a wrecking ball that goes through any obstacles. I expect him to accomplish a lot of things. Records are meant to be broken. I think that’s what sports is all about. I have no doubt he can exceed nine or 10 wins. He is dedicated to the game and the amount of time he puts into his golf is amazing. His love for our sport and his desire to get better … those are factors that make him so special”.

With Matsuyama having battled neck and back issues in recent years, including at last week’s Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard, Choi is hopeful the Japanese stays injury-free. “Sometimes I hear he has back issues, and whenever I hear about those issues, I think he is constantly practising to improve. But he is young and he has plenty of time to show us why he is one of the top Asian golfers,” said Choi.

‘It’s Life Changing’ - LIV Golfer On Asian Tour’s International Series

Anirban Lahiri was full of the praise for the introduction of the International Series which offers up a place on the LIV Golf League

  • Sign up to Golf Monthly Newsletter Newsletter

Anirban Lahiri

When the International Series was unveiled in February last year it was heralded as the most significant development in the history of Asian golf.

As well as pumping in $300m into the Asian Tour, with the tournament purses ranging from $1.5m to $2m per event, the idea of the new Series was to drive greater fan engagement, attract new commercial interest and to help stabilise professional golf after the pandemic.

The 10 events on the calendar now form the backbone of the Asian Tour schedule and it sparked the beginning of a relationship with LIV Golf, which saw the winner of the 2022 Order of Merit, Scott Vincent, claim his place on the LIV Golf League and the Zimbabwean is now part of Iron Heads GC.

Anirban Lahiri joined the Asian Tour in 2008 and he is also now part of the LIV Golf League, the Indian is on Bryson DeChambeau 's Crushers GC line-up, and the 36-year-old believes that the current structure is as good as it's ever been.

"It’s phenomenal, I think just as a pathway to LIV, to the qualification event, to winning the International Series points list and getting a spot on LIV. It’s life changing. Every year someone’s going to change their lives pretty much. Even for the others who may not win the money list, they get an opportunity to qualify for next year. Even for those who don’t get to that, you still get fantastic fields for this," explained the seven-time Asian Tour winner.

This week the Asian Tour is breaking new ground with an event at Close House in England, next week they will do the same at Fairmont St Andrews in Scotland.

"This week you get to compete with some of the best players in the world. I think if I’m a rookie or if I’m starting out my career or if I’m trying to get better as a professional golfer and I can get into tournaments which have quality like this, you know it makes a very big difference when you go out and play with some of these guys or watch them play like when I did when I did 15 years ago, when I was just starting out. It made a huge difference, it impacts at so many different levels, I think it’s brilliant we’re playing in this region.

"We’re bringing a lot of the Asian golfers who don’t have much experience playing in the UK and Europe and I think that’s another huge positive. Every way you look at it, it’s phenomenal for Asian golf, It’s phenomenal for global golf because it’s not just Asians playing on this tour. We’ve got a whole bunch of Americans, Aussies, Europeans as well, so it’s brilliant, I think the more we have of it, the better."

Fellow LIV golfer Graeme McDowell echoed Lahiri's sentiments and the 2010 US Open winner would like to see an event head to his home country and possibly the 2019 Open venue Royal Portrush.

The International Series will conclude in November at the Indonesian Masters.

Asian Tour to add event to help players qualify for Paris Olympics

T he Asian Tour wants to add a lucrative event before June to help its players qualify for this summer's Paris Olympics, the head of the tour's International Series told AFP on Wednesday.

Rahul Singh was speaking ahead of this week's International Series Macau, where players are chasing a $2 million prize fund and all-important ranking points.

Only 60 players will reach Paris 2024 and with most countries having a maximum of two places, competition is fierce before the Olympic Golf Rankings (OGR) are finalised in June.

Saudi-bankrolled LIV Golf has invested $300 million in the Asian Tour -- which unlike LIV receives world-ranking points -- leading to the creation of the International Series.

More than 20 LIV golfers have made the short trip over from Hong Kong for this week's event at the Macau Golf and Country Club, and Singh agreed many have ranking points on their minds.

"We're seeing that with some of the LIV boys who sit on the cusp of Olympic qualification and the Asian Tour players who want to work their way into the top 60," he said.

"And therefore we're looking actively right now at adding another International Series tournament before the cut-off, which is June 17."

Singh declined to say where and when the event will be "because we haven't finalised it", but added: "We're actively trying to make that happen and the Olympics is one of the driving forces."

The Asian Tour has only two events scheduled between now and June, in Saudi Arabia and South Korea, leaving ample room for more.

- Paris goal -

Hong Kong's Asian Games gold medallist Taichi Kho is one player who has stated his goal this year is to qualify for Paris.

The 23-year-old, the 2023 Asian Tour young player of the year, is just outside the top 60 on the Olympic Golf Rankings.

"I think International Series events, with how strong the fields are, is a great opportunity for me to crack the top-60 benchmark," Kho said.

"It's an opportunity this week to progress my game and (get) a little bit closer to that vision of playing the Olympics."

LIV players such as Anirban Lahiri are battling with Asian Tour golfers such as Gaganjeet Bhullar for one of the India places.

Two-time Macau Open winner Bhullar, currently 50th on the OGR, can rise up the rankings with a good result on one of his favourite courses this week.

Lahiri will play in the DP World Tour's Indian Open at the end of the month, one of the few tournaments outside LIV available to him.

He had been due to tee up in Macau but pulled out after getting the flu in Hong Kong.

Other LIV stars such as major-winner Cameron Smith and Joaquin Niemann have been playing in Australia before Christmas and in Asian Tour events to keep in the frame for Paris.

Hong Kong's Taichi Kho won Asian Games gold last year and says Olympic qaulification is his main goal in 2024

Asian Tour moves from New Zealand to Macau

Asian Tour moves from New Zealand to Macau

The Asian Tour moves from New Zealand to Macau for the fourth event on the 2024 calendar, the International Series Macau presented by Wynn (March 14-17), the second of the ten "elevated tournaments" of the circuit - following the International Series Oman - in which Stefano Mazzoli will participate.

Asian Tour, results

At the Macau Golf & Country Club, the spotlight will be on over twenty players from the LIV Golf, including Mexican Carlos Ortiz, the number one on the money list and winner in Oman, Spaniards Sergio Garcia, David Puig (winner of the Malaysian Open), and Eugenio Chacarra, Americans Patrick Reed, Jason Kokrak, Hudson Swafford, Pat Perez, Anthony Kim, Harold Varner III, and Andy Ogletree, Englishman Ian Poulter, Northern Irishman Graeme McDowell, Chilean Mito Pereira, and Colombian Sebastian Muñoz.

Naturally, they will be the favorites in light of their performance in Oman, where Ortiz was followed by six other Super League players in the top ten. However, there are numerous Asian Tour players who have the quality to challenge them, such as Australians Scott Hend, ranked 5th in the Order of Merit, and Maverick Antcliff, ranked 8th, who made a name for himself in 2019 by winning three tournaments and the money list on the China Tour and has had a strong start to the year.

Among others are Americans John Catlin and Sihwan Kim, Thais Jazz Janewattananond and Poom Saksansin, Filipinos Miguel Tabuena and Angelo Que, and Korean Bio Kim. Stefano Mazzoli is participating in his fourth event of the season after earning his card with an eighth-place finish at the Qualifying School final.

He has cashed in all three events so far (31st in Malaysia, 48th in Oman, and 58th in the previous New Zealand Open), certainly a solid start for a rookie. The prize money is $2,000,000 with the winner receiving $360,000. The rules of golf comprise a set of standard norms and procedures governing how the sport of golf should be played.

They are jointly written and managed by the Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews, the governing body of golf worldwide, except for the United States and Mexico, which fall under the jurisdiction of the United States Golf Association.

A panel of experts composed of members from the R&A and USGA oversees and refines the rules every four years. The latest revision has been in effect since January 1, 2016. Changes to the rules of golf generally fall into two main categories: those that enhance understanding and those that, in certain cases, reduce penalties to ensure fairness.

The rule book, titled "Rules of Golf," is regularly published and also includes regulations governing amateur status. In Italy, it is the responsibility of the Federgolf to oversee competitions, enforce the rules issued by the R&A, ensure that these rules are adhered to by clubs, associations, and their members, and manage the resulting sports justice, protecting their interests abroad.
