Sevilla v Liverpool - Pre-Season Friendly

The rumors are true.

Liverpool FC announced on Friday that they are indeed returning to the United States on a preseason tour which will see them visit two cities on the east coast of the country and face Manchester United and Arsenal. This will be the first time the club has traveled to the US since 2019, when they visited Indiana, Boston, and New York.

The Reds will first face Arsenal on July 31st in Philadephia, Pennsylvania at Lincoln Financial Field, and then Manchester United in Columbia, South Carolina on August 2nd. Considering the weather was a factor in some performances that last time they were in the States, this writer couldn’t begin to fathom what would make them think playing in South Carolina in August is a good idea.

This will also likely be the first chance for American fans to get a glimpse at the new manager, whoever they turn out to be.

“We are proud to announce our highly anticipated return to the USA, providing a great environment for the squad to prepare for the season ahead,” said Ben Latty, the club’s commercial director.

“Pre-season tours always present exceptional opportunities for our supporters, the team and our official partners to engage in memorable experiences within a key focus market for the club.

“We know millions of super-passionate American fans love this club and what we stand for, a fact underlined when our televised game with Arsenal in December became the most-watched Premier League game in US history.

“The USA is an important market for the club and our partners; with 67 official supporters clubs, international academies across 12 states, and the USA being the number one international market for our merchandising business.

“We eagerly await the opportunity to bring the club closer to the fans and look forward to playing in these iconic venues.”

Tickets are set to go on sale on Tuesday, February 27th to the general public, with all information available on the club’s website.

What happened last time Liverpool did USA preseason tour including first look at USMNT wonderkid

Liverpool has not announced pre-season plans yet, but the USA is a possibility. Here's what happened last time, including a first look at a USMNT starlet.

Liverpool’s tour of South-East Asia represented its first pre-season voyage abroad for three years. This was due to the effects of the global pandemic, with tours cancelled in the summer of 2020 and 2021.

The trip took them to Thailand and Singapore before a return to Europe.

There has been speculation that the club will return to the US this coming summer, with Liverpool last seen on American shores in the summer of 2019.

Club CEO Billy Hogan gave an insight into the club’s thinking as pertains to the next pre-season tour last summer.

“We are already starting to look are where we could go next year,” he said to the ECHO last summer.

“Asia has always had a massive Liverpool supporter base, and it’s a big place so there are lots of places to go.

“We’ve looked at a number of different markets. North America is another one and the US is a partner that continues to grow.”

So with an American tour possible, what happened the last time the Reds went Stateside?

Liverpool arrived in the US as Champions League winners, having seen off Tottenham in the final in Madrid two months earlier. Its first game of the tour happened in Notre Dame, when Jürgen Klopp’s side lost 3-2 to his old team Borussia Dortmund in a thrilling encounter with over 40,000 people in attendance.

That game was also significant in that it saw Borussia Dortmund start fresh-faced academy wonderkid Gio Reyna, who has since gone on to become part of the USMNT.

Just 24 hours later, Liverpool played again. This time, the game was held in Boston, the home of club owners FSG, as the Reds lost to Sevilla 2-1 at Fenway Park.

The final game of the tour came in the Bronx in New York, where Gini Wijnaldum and Divock Origi scored in a 2-2 draw against Portuguese outfit Sporting at Yankee Stadium. Liverpool concluded their tour without winning a single game.

But it mattered little in the end, as Liverpool went on to end its 30-year wait for a league title by the end of the 2019-20 season. Still, it will be hoping for better if it tours the US again — and might want to keep a closer eye out for potential USMNT wonderkids.

The anfield wrap on liverpool ahead of u.s. tour: ‘they are in a new phase’.

  • Joe Prince-Wright ,
  • Joe Prince-Wright

Liverpool are still in the hunt for a top four finish but Jurgen Klopp is now in charge of a big rebuilding process as the Reds are in ‘a new phase’ as they transition from the German’s first seven years in charge.

[ MORE: How to watch Premier League in USA ]

That is the view of Neil Atkinson from The Anfield Wrap (TAW) and it will be intriguing to see how Klopp reshapes his playing philosophy, adds to his squad and how it all slots together over the next few years.

TAW are bringing their show to North America with their ‘TAW Live’ tour taking place from Wednesday, Mar. 22 to Monday, Mar. 27, with shows in Toronto, Detroit, Boston, New York, Philadelphia and Washington D.C.

TAW host Neil Atkinson joined Brad Thomas and Drew Dinsick on NBC Sports’ Soccer Pub to discuss what he thinks of topsy-turvy Liverpool this season and what their identity could become in the future.

Klopp has ‘never had to do this’ before

“I think this is the key question for the next phase of Jurgen Klopp,” Atkinson said. “He has never had to do this before. He’s done seven years at Mainz, seven years at Dortmund and he’s now done seven years at Liverpool. Jurgen has signed his new deal and is staying until 2026 and now what he’s got to do is transition this football team in a way he hasn’t had to do in the past.

“I think that is an interesting challenge. Sides get used to the way you play and players themselves can become a little bit stale and there is also you yourself and how you see the game and how you’re going to interact with the game as a manager. I don’t think he’s had to do this in any of his other jobs. He’s done unbelievable jobs everywhere he has been, including Liverpool, but this is a new phase.”

Transition has arrived for the Reds. But what will it look like?

“The key question for Liverpool is Liverpool are clearly in transition, that is clear and apparent. That happens to a lot of sides and some sides manage to change and stay at the top, Liverpool haven’t managed to succeed in that. Last season they were beginning that process and last season you saw a bit of transition from Liverpool but not as much as you’ve seen now and they haven’t managed to stay at the top and the Champions League this campaign.

“What is it moving to? Is it simply different players? Or is he looking to change his approach a little bit? Is he looking to add creativity to the side? What does that come at the expense of? I think that is a key question. On the whole I feel like talk of Liverpool’s overall demise is vastly overstated. I think it is a side that will right itself. There have been injury issues this year, I don’t think a number of the players and coaching staff have had their best season by any stretch of the imagination, but I think they will come back strong.”

Top four finish essential this season

“I’m of the view that as long as they can find a way to a top four finish then I feel they will summer strongly and they will be able to come out of the other side and we will really be able to see what the next phase of Jurgen Klopp’s blueprint is. I am absolutely certain he has a blueprint and has a way he wants this team to play and knows which players he wants to keep and move on. I think we will see that again in the summer and Liverpool come again. But it is important for Liverpool to come top four.”

Liverpool owners FSG confirm Michael Edwards' return to set up

Mark Ogden expects FSG's CEO of Football Michael Edwards to already know who will replace Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool. (1:13)

Liverpool 's American owners Fenway Sports Group (FSG) have confirmed Michael Edwards has been appointed as the organisation's CEO of football, with his initial challenge to recruit new leadership for the Premier League club's football operations.

Edwards was previously Liverpool's sporting director and was credited with overhauling the club's recruitment strategy and identifying Jürgen Klopp for the manager's role in 2015.

- Stream on ESPN+: LaLiga, Bundesliga, more (U.S.)

He left the club in 2022, but will now return as part of the FSG wider setup, where he will be tasked with rebuilding the football operations team after Klopp leaves Liverpool at the end of the season.

FSG struggled to replace Edwards after he left, with both Julian Ward and Jorg Schmadtke lasting less than 12 months in the sporting director role after the 44-year-old's departure.

But Edwards will now return and oversee a new era at Liverpool and hinted that FSG could make a move to take over another football club.

"It was vital for me that, if I did return, it had to be with renewed vigour and energy," Edwards said in a statement.

"In practice, this means having fresh challenges and opportunities. As such, one of the biggest factors in my decision is the commitment to acquire and oversee an additional club, growing this area of their organisation.

"I believe that to remain competitive, investment and expansion of the current football portfolio is necessary."

Sources have told ESPN that Bournemouth technical director Richard Hughes has been lined up to fill the vacant sporting director role at Liverpool at the end of the season.

Sources added that Edwards has been offered opportunities by Chelsea and Manchester United since leaving Liverpool but he rejected those advances in order to wait for the right opportunity.

Information from ESPN's Mark Ogden contributed to this report.

Liverpool FC USA tour: Past trips bring best out of overseas fans. Over to you America

To many people a pre-season tour is one of the less pleasing aspects of modern football. To Liverpool FC it is a yearly pilgrimage.

A lot of fans think that money spinning trips to the Far East or America in a period in which the team is preparing for a tough season ahead could be done without.

Surely Brendan Rodgers would be forgiven for wanting to work with his players at Melwood in order to prepare them for another Premier League title challenge.

The players, meanwhile, would surely prefer not to fly hundreds of miles around the world and leave their families behind once again, especially after spending weeks in Brazil for the World Cup.

Then there are the fans, who want to see the team given the very best chance of success - and that means being well prepared.

Fans make thier way to the stadium

Liverpool’s players and staff will clock up some more air miles this summer when they jet off for their pre-season tour of America on Sunday.

The World Cup contingent have barely been home three weeks before they head to the departures lounge once again.

Long-haul flights, foreign heat and jet lag will only serve to decrease the energy levels ahead of a season in which the Reds will compete on four fronts.

There are only one group of people that are looking forward to these games.

But it is they that may wait for years for a chance to see their heroes and turn out in numbers when they touch down on their soil.

They are fanatical and dedicated - and they are a pretty big group.

The overseas fans have made quite an impact in recent years in places like Thailand, Indonesia, Australia and the USA.

liverpool fc american tour

In the last 10 years, Liverpool have stepped up their pre-season programmes, visiting the States on two occasions and heading to the Far East no less than four times.

They have also touched down in Australia and Canada.

Since FSG took control of the club, the Reds have toured every pre-season, alternating between the Far East and America.

USA & Canada 2004

Liverpool made their first visit to the States in over 40 years and, despite the long absence, their popularity was still at a high.

A crowd of 25,000 turned up and belted out a stirring rendition of You’ll Never Walk Alone before Liverpool beat Celtic 5-1 in the opening game in Connecticut - although fans were not allowed to take banners into Rentschler Field.

Liverpool completed the tour with a defeat to Porto in the Skydome in Toronto and a 2-1 victory over Roma in New York.

Hong Kong 2007

Liverpool jetted to Hong Kong in 2007 to take part in the Barclays Asia Trophy and were met with many fanatical fans. Both their matches, a 3-1 win over South China and a 0-0 draw with Portsmouth, were near sell-outs in the Hong Kong Stadium and the Reds were followed by fanatical support wherever they went.

Thailand 2009

The Reds headed back to the Far East in 2009 and the Thai fans set the bar ever higher as thousands turned out to see Steven Gerrard , Jamie Carragher and Fernando Torres.

The Reds took on the Thai national team in front a sell-out 49,000 crowd - but most of the locals were supporting Liverpool!

Malaysia & China 2011

Liverpool travelled to the Far East once again in 2011 for a three-stop tour. They met China’s Guangdong Sunray Cave in the first of the three games, winning 4-3 in front of a passionate 40,000 strong crowd in the Reds’ first ever game in mainland China.

liverpool fc american tour

That was good, but Malaysia went one better. Kenny Dalglish ’s side were met by fanatical scenes by the Malaysian supporters and an incredible 80,000 of them sang a spine-tingling chorus of You’ll Never Walk Alone at the Bunjit Jalil National Stadium in Kuala Lumpar.

USA & Canada 2012

FSG arrived at Liverpool in September 2011 - so it was no surprise that the Reds travelled to North America for their next summer tour the following summer.

They landed in Toronto and were serenaded by thousands of Reds fans in the (almost) aptly named Rogers centre, in a 1-1 draw with Toronto FC.

They were then greeted by a contingent of Liverpool fans upon arrival in Boston, this Irish community in this city provide a huge Liverpool following and they turned up in their thousands to see Liverpool lose to Roma 2-1 at Fenway Park.

Next, Liverpool travelled to Baltimore where they met Tottenham and it was clear that Liverpool have the bigger following as they were greeted by a sea of Red shirts. Unfortunately Rodgers’ side couldn't treat their army of American fans to a goal, and the match finished 0-0.

Far East and Australia 2013

In the summer of 2013 Liverpool embarked on what was probably their most iconic summer tour.

The Reds made friends wherever they headed, and inspired frenzied scenes in all three destinations.

The videos of Indonesian fans and a packed out MCG in Melbourne demonstrate not only how popular Liverpool are on foreign shores, but just how much the pre-season tours mean to the local fans who may have to wait years to see their heroes.

In 1964, Liverpool was a hit in Boston

(From left) Frank Mirisola, Sal Lo Grasso, Umberto Atria, and Philip Mirisola were members of the Boston Metros, who played Liverpool FC at Everett Stadium in 1964.

By Frank Dell’Apa

Globe Staff

In 1964, the popularity of two groups of Liverpudlian lads was on the rise as they toured the United States. In September, the Beatles performed at a soldout Boston Garden. Four months earlier, Liverpool FC attracted a similar crowd for an exhibition soccer match at Everett Stadium.

And just as Beatlemania overwhelmed the Garden audience, Liverpool FC swept away a team called the Boston Metros on May 8, 1964.

The score was Liverpool 8, Metros 1. But the result might not have been so lopsided if a Boston player had not provoked the visitors by dribbling through the legs of a Liverpool veteran, according to Frank Mirisola, a Metros midfielder.

"It was a humiliation of one of Liverpool's best players," Mirisola recalled. "And after that, the game changed and they really started playing. It was 0-0 in the first 15 minutes and we probably could have held them to three or four goals, instead of 8-1. But they had national team players, six of them, like Juventus today. They were professionals and the coach was Bill Shankly."

The year marked the resurgence of Liverpool FC, which won the First Division, an early milestone on the way to becoming one of Europe's most successful clubs. The next year, Liverpool won its first FA Cup. Two years later, Liverpool made its first extended run in the Champions Cup, eliminated by Inter Milan in the semifinals.

The contrast in the status of Liverpool and the Metros was stark. Three members of the Liverpool traveling party (Shankly and assistant Bob Paisley, plus Ian Callaghan) would be knighted. Gerry Byrne and Callaghan were members of England's 1966 World Cup championship team. Other key Liverpool figures such as Alan A'Court, Ronnie Moran, Ian St. John, and Ron Yeats, would continue to receive heroes' welcomes when they returned to watch matches at Anfield Stadium.

The Metros, a blend of full-time professionals such as Brazilian forward Carlos Metidieri, plus semi-pro players such as Mirisola, would fold after the season. Some Metros – Mirisola and his brother, Filippo, Salvatore Golino, Sal Lo Grasso, and Mario Russo — would remain in the area. Metro defender Hubert Vogelsinger, an Austrian, would go on to coach the Boston Minutemen and other teams in the North American Soccer League in the 1970s.

But the Metros did not have a permanent home stadium to bear testament to their accomplishments. Their story lived on by word of mouth in cafes in Medford and the North End.

The Metros were competing in the American Soccer League, a NASL precursor. A few days after the Liverpool match, the Metros jumped in their cars for a drive to Philadelphia to play the first-place Ukrainian Nationals.

"I was very young," said Lo Grasso, now 65. "I remember — my coach said we're saving you for next Sunday, because we had a big game in Philadelphia.

"So, I was on the bench. But I remember these [Liverpool] guys, they were unbelievable. They were all professional. I was a fan of Inter and we followed [European soccer] and we knew Liverpool in those days was good — real good.

"I was not afraid of them, no. Why? I was a good player then. I would have liked to get in there but I was young and they were all experienced guys. It was an unbelievable night, the place was packed — 18,000, or better, that's what Everett Stadium holds. It was jam-packed."

The attendance for the game is a point of contention. On a Liverpool fan website, the crowd is listed at 10,000.

"It was 15,000 — that was the number of tickets," said Mirisola, who is referee supervisor for the Boston Public Schools league. "It wasn't quite full. Everett Stadium was a horseshoe, all bleacher seats. There might have been some people who got free tickets. But I saw the ticket receipts and it was 15,000."

The perception of soccer in the US was mixed in the '60s. Significant crowds did appear at major soccer events around the country, often outdrawing other sports. In 1964, the Red Sox averaged about 11,000 spectators per game and on May 27 that year, a Red Sox-Washington Senators game drew 3,315 at Fenway Park. The same day, the Metros met German Bundesliga club Hamburg (a 7-1 defeat) before 6,000 fans at Chelsea Stadium.

Soccer suffered from administrative problems and lack of media exposure. Talent development programs were inconsistent. Several Boston players — Metidieri, Nestor Caceres, Francisco Catroppa, and Jorge Piotti — had started their professional careers in South America, then being recruited by Toronto Italia in Canada.

Lo Grasso and the Mirisola brothers were in their teens when they emigrated from Riesi in Sicily. There were few professional soccer opportunities, so they went to work doing manual labor and found places on local teams, the best of which were ethnically-affiliated — Greek, Italian, Polish, Portuguese. School was not a practical option, either, because of the language barrier, but they found acceptance on the soccer field.

The Boston Italia club had an office on Hanover Street and the team played games at North End Park. Umberto Atria owned Sal's Pizza on Cambridge Street and also coached the team, entering it in the ASL as the Metros, and a later version as the Tigers.

The Metros compiled a 9-1-3 record and finished second to the Ukrainian Nationals in the 1964 ASL standings.

The local team was popular in some ethnic communities but struggled to find acceptance in the mainstream media.

"In those days soccer was big," Lo Grasso said. "We used to hang out at Caffe' Dello Sport, Caffe' Paradiso, and they used to have a board on the wall to tell you the leading scorer of American League [ASL] and the teams [standings].

"We had a good team. Most of the guys used to play pro, they were older, they had experience."

British teams regularly dominated the competition on North American tours, their motivation increasing after the United States's 1-0 win over England in the 1950 World Cup in Brazil. In May of 1964, the national team included three Liverpool players — Roger Hunt, Gordon Milne, and Roger Thompson — who skipped the club's tour to be with the England team that took a 10-0 victory over the US in an exhibition in New York.

The Boston team would compete against several visiting European clubs — Celtic FC, Hapoel Petah Tikva, Hamburger SV, Hearts of Midlothian, Nottingham Forest, West Ham United, several Italian Serie A clubs. They had a nomadic existence, playing at stadiums in Chelsea, Everett, Lynn, Malden, and Somerville.

"The only decent game we had was against Hearts, we tied, 1-1," said Lo Grasso, who would go on to play in the NASL. "I scored on a free kick. But it was, like, 85 minutes at one end. Our goalie was superior."

After their playing days ended, the Metro players would keep their hand in the game. In 1972, AS Roma played a preseason contest against Hungarian champion Ujpest at Nickerson Field, losing, 2-0. The referee was Frank Mirisola.

Many of the Metros went into business. Lo Grasso and Mirisola own restaurants across from each other on L Street in South Boston.

Meanwhile, the Liverpool teams of the '60s achieved legendary status in European soccer. Shankly, the manager, is commemorated by the Shankly Gate and a statue at the club's Anfield Stadium.

Shankly had established a long-term plan to build a team when Liverpool was in the Second Division, his planning paying off as The Reds were promoted in 1962 and won the First Division title in '64.

Shankly, a Scotsman, united Liverpool FC based on his belief in socialism's collective philosophy. Shankly was obsessive, known for saying: "Some people believe football is a matter of life and death, I am very disappointed with that attitude. I can assure you it is much, much more important than that."

The Shankly years established the basis for Liverpool's later success. The Reds won the Champions Cup in 1977, '78, and '81 under Paisley. They also won the Champions competition in '84, with former Revolution coach Steve Nicol in the starting lineup, defeating AS Roma in Rome's Stadio Olimpico, and 2005.

And the Boston area received a preview during Liverpool FC's May 8, 1964, visit.

"Liverpool was a young team, fast," Lo Grasso recalled." They had speed, and that makes a lot of difference, even if you have experience.

"They won the league and the next year they played against Inter in the Champions Cup. And we went back to work. It's not easy, playing against those guys. They've got another speed. When you're professional you're professional — that's what you do for a living. Even though we were good they were better."

Love Pegasus 40’s. They are very comfortable for running or walking. The description for this shoe says it is rush blue/chlorine blue/white, and the box in which they are sold also says the same colors. However, they actually are black and tan as the picture shows. ...

Support: Neutral

The more supportive the shoe, the more stability it can give to your natural stride. A combination of tuned support and intentionally placed cushioning helps you feel secure with every step. The Peg 40 has neutral support. It gives you balance, whether you're a heel or forefoot striker. It's good for long and short runs, too, providing a smooth transition from heel to toe.

Cushioning: Medium

The more cushioning that you have underfoot, the softer and more comfortable your running experience can be. Cushioning helps soften impact as your feet hit the ground. Feel connected to the ground with Nike React technology, a lightweight, durable foam that delivers a comfortable, responsive ride. It holds its shape run after run to give you a consistent feeling.

Responsiveness: High

The more responsive the shoe, the more energy return you can get back with each step. Whether you want to run a little bit faster or with a little less effort, responsive shoes help give you slightly more spring in your step to get more out of your run. We paired Nike React technology with 2 Zoom Air units (1 in the forefoot and the heel) to give you a bouncy, springy sensation and an energized feel at toe-off.

Inviting Fit and Feel

A highly tuned single layer mesh creates an inviting feel and fit. We redesigned the midfoot strap for a more molded fit to the foot, shaped for all sized arches.

What's New About the Peg 40?

When we sat down to design the Peg 40, we took an inside-out, approach, literally, starting with an implemented midfoot band for a more secure, but forgiving sensation, like the Peg is giving your arch a welcoming, gentle hug. We wanted to make the inner confines of the shoe comfortable, breathable and forgiving in the toes, arch and heel, where your feet are most sensitive, with an engineered circular pattern that allows it to conform to your foot.

More Benefits

  • Heel area optimizes the landing space and improves transition and durability.
  • Waffle-inspired pattern provides traction for the road.
  • An extra flex groove offers a smooth toe-off.
