The Anhinga Trail: Where to See Birds and Alligators in the Everglades NP

By Author cristina garcia

Posted on Published: January 9, 2013  - Last updated: March 24, 2023

You don’t have to go slogging through deep swamps and get bitten by a thousand mosquitoes to see alligators and waterbirds in the Everglades. In fact, you only have to go 4 miles from the main Everglades National Park entrance to see an amazing assortment of wildlife, right from the comfort of a boardwalk trail. It’s called the Anhinga Trail and it is one of the most popular trails in the national park.

The Everglades National Park in Florida is a vast (1.5 million acre) wilderness. A must-stop if you are driving down to the Florida Keys. It holds the largest continuous stand of sawgrass prairie in North America and is the largest remaining subtropical wilderness in the continental United States. Take a moment to marvel at the classic Everglades’ sawgrass marsh.

It provides habitat for alligators, muskrats, deer, turtles, apple snails, and numerous bird species (around 325), as well as many species listed as endangered in the United States including manatees, wood storks, American crocodiles, and the Florida panther. The greatest concentration of wading birds on the continent of North America is found here in the Everglades National Park. And the Anhinga Trail is one of the best places to see them.

How to Get to the Anhinga Trail

The Anhinga Trail is very accessible. With a trail length of only 0.8 miles round trip its paved walkway and boardwalks make it an easy wildlife viewing adventure for the family. The trail starts from the parking lot at the Royal Palm Visitor Center, which is only a short drive (4 miles) from Ernest Coe Visitor Center (the main park entrance).

The self-guided walk winds through sawgrass marshes which provide habitat for alligators, turtles, and numerous bird species including  roseate spoonbill, great blue heron, white ibi, wood stork, black vulture, green heron, tricolored heron, great egret, common moorhen, cormorant, purple gallinule, snowy egret, and of course, the bird for which the trail was named: the anhinga.

Another trail that is well worth walking is the Gumbo Limbo Trail. It also starts at the Royal Palm Visitor Center, and the entire trail is less than half a mile round trip. This trail is also a paved path and it is also self-guided. It meanders through a shaded forest of gumbo limbo trees ( Bursera simaruba ), royal palms ( Roystonea elata ), air plants, and ferns.

Why the Anhinga Trail?

There are many reasons why you should stop at the Anhinga Trail during your visit to the Everglades.

  • The wildlife is habituated to people, so you can get close and still see natural behaviors.
  • Rare opportunity to view nesting waterbirds, such as cormorants and anhingas, at eye level and at close range.
  • See a wide range of bird behaviors including nest building, courtship, raising chicks, hunting for fish, and swimming underwater.
  • Safely watch alligators from a close distance including tiny babies. We found the observation deck to be the best place for this.
  • Easy access. Paved trails, well-maintained boardwalks, with toilet facilities and wheelchair accessibility.
  • Great photographic opportunities with no fences.

When to Visit the Anhinga Trail

The winter season, when migrating birds arrive, is the best time to visit the Anhinga Trail. Wading birds typically nest during Florida’s winter-to-spring dry season. Also, winter months in Florida mean no scorching heat and no bugs! We normally avoid the summer months in Florida for these reasons.

The time of the day can also be crucial if you are into great wildlife photography. Avoid the heat of the day and arrive just after sunrise or late afternoon and you’ll be rewarded with softer light and more pleasant colors. Don’t forget to pack some warm clothes if you visit in the winter at dawn or dusk.

What to Take to the Anhinga Trail?

Even though the Anhinga Trail is a short and easy walk, you can definitely spend a few hours on the main path so prepare accordingly. We recommend taking these:

  • Sunglasses
  • Sun lotion (that south Florida sun!)

Bicycles are NOT allowed

Photo Gallery from the Anhinga Trail

Though there are many great locations in the Everglades to see and photograph birds and alligators, we always come back to the Anhinga Trail for its ease of access and superb sightings. You’ll be amazed at how many hours you can spend on such a short trail because there’s just so much to see. Don’t forget that even animals here are very tolerant they are still wild animals and should be respected.

Amazing shots and blog! I initially noticed you two "bird vs. fish" shots. So could the birds really consume both of those fish okay really?? The grebe's looks so big for itself and the other fish looks huge/spiky ahhh! ;)

I have never witnessed such events before. Do the fish typically put up a good fight, if eaten, do both unlucky preys get swallowed wriggling/alive as well?!

Thanks Kyle! Well...some are swallowed when still alive. It all depends on the species. Some birds wack the fish until they kill it, some don't. :)

Anhinga trail in everglades national park.

The Anhinga Trail in Everglades National Park is one of the most popular trails in the park.  At only four miles from the main entrance to the park (and the Earnest F. Coe Visitor Center) and fully accessible for wheelchairs and strollers, it is extremely easy to get to.  The trail is very easy to travel on, and perfect for young families.

But what makes this trail amazing is the unique blend of wildlife and immersive landscape.  While traveling on this short hike, you’ll come across a variety of birdlife, reptiles and plenty of bugs.  While some of the bugs can be bothersome (mosquitoes, we’re talking to you!), there are others that are really quite interesting and colorful that will captivate the child in all of us.

Anhinga Trail in Everglades National Park

As a family, we’ve hiked the Anhinga Trail twice.  Both were in different times of the year, and both were equally as amazing.

If you plan on visiting Everglades National Park, it’s likely that we won’t have to convince you to head out on this great trail.  However, if you are just thinking of driving down to Flamingo and bypassing this hike, make sure you stop and spend a few minutes exploring.  We’re positive you will enjoy the experience!

everglades national park itinerary

The Anhinga Trail is one of many walks and activities to explore Everglades that we cover in our downloadable Everglades National Park Itinerary .  This park is huge, and it can be challenging figuring out what to do in the park, and our itinerary will help take the guesswork out of your planning.

PARKING AND TRAILHEAD FOR THE ANHINGA TRAIL

Anhinga Trail in Everglades National Park Parking area location

Anhinga Trailhead location, Courtesy of the National Park Service

The Anhinga Trail starts from the parking area for the Royal Palm Visitor Center.  This is located about 4.0 miles from the Ernest F. Coe Visitor Center. Passing by the visitor center is something that you can certainly do, but you should stop either on the way in or way out to learn about the park.  The rangers here are great as well (which is no surprise!).

  • Directions from the Ernest F. Coe Visitor Center to the Anhinga Trail (this will take about 10 minutes and includes passing through the park entrance).
  • Directions from Homestead to the Anhinga Trail (this will take about 30 minutes).

The parking lot for the Anhinga Trail is shared with the Royal Palm Visitor Center and parking for the Gumbo Limbo Trail.  There are over 100 parking spots, including parking for busses and RVs. While that may seem like a lot, the parking lot can fill up.  However, since the trail is short, you will likely see a spot opening up about once every minute, so if you are patient and you should be able to find a spot easily.

You likely won’t believe what you are about to read, but if you are coming here in the wintertime, make sure you take actions to protect yourself from the vultures above.  They have taken a liking to rubber and love to pick away at wipers or seals around car windows. No kidding.

Anhinga Trail in Everglades National Park

The park service provides tarps and bungee cords to help you out.  We did see plenty of vultures when we were there, but our car didn’t get attacked at all.  That being said, some people strongly suggest that if you have a rental car to make sure you get the insurance to avoid having to pay out of your own pocket or make a claim to your personal insurance.

There are restrooms at the trailhead and no restrooms while you are on the trail.

ANHINGA TRAIL: TRAIL SURFACE AND ACCESSIBILITY

  • Trail surface. The trail is paved or boardwalk the entire way, making it great for hikers of all ages and capabilities.
  • Accessibility.   The trail is wheelchair accessible and suitable for travelers with canes.

PREPARATION FOR HIKING THE ANHINGA TRAIL

The hike is short so you don’t need to do much to prepare.  However, there are a few things that we recommend:

  • Sunblock.  If you are going here when the sun is out (which is most of the time), you need to bring protection from the sun.
  • Bug Spray. The bugs in Everglades National Park can be absolutely relentless, so make sure you bring something with you.  We use Squito Ban from Yaya (as it is all natural).  If the bugs are especially bad, then we use Repel (which has Deet).
  • Water.  Make sure you carry plenty of water with you while you are in the park-even on short trails.

HIKING ON THE ANHINGA TRAILL

Before starting off on the hike, there are a few basic preparations that you should make sure you do.  First, the sun in the Everglades can be very hot. We highly advise wearing a hat and sunscreen. Second, the humidity down here can be oppressive, especially in the summer.  Because of this, you’ll want to be sure to carry plenty of water with you, particularly for elderly or for children. Finally, the mosquitoes in the Everglades are legendary, so be sure to bring proper insect repellant with you.

Anhinga Trail in Everglades National Park

After properly protecting your car (and yourselves!), pass under the awning at the Royal Palm Visitor Center.  The trail starts immediately from the visitor center and comes to water right away. The paved trail continues along the water for the first 0.2 miles before reaching a junction.

Anhinga Trail in Everglades National Park

By taking the trail to the left, you’ll start out on a boardwalk that continues all the way to several overlooks.

Anhinga Trail in Everglades National Park

The trail then loops around on itself before returning back to the pavement.  The entire trail is 0.8 miles without any elevation gain. If you stroll at a leisurely pace, you’ll likely be back at the visitor center in around 45 minutes.

ANHINGA TRAIL WILDLIFE

At each overlook, and along the entire trail, you’ll encounter plenty of wildlife.  Even if you are not a birder, you’ll be really captivated by the wildlife. Some of the most common animals that you’ll see in this marsh area include the following:

  • Alligators.   Everyone loves to see the alligators!  For the most part, they hang out in the water.  Occasionally you will find them crossing paths. Be sure to give them plenty of space!
  • Anhingas.   The trails namesake, the Anhinga actually spears fish with their beak.  The feathers also get wet, so each time they swim they have to dry out their wings before trying again.  It really is neat to see them drying their wings in the sun.
  • Egrets and herons.   Egrets are the large white birds that are often found wading in shallow water and have darker legs than herons

ANHINGA TRAIL: TOP LIKES AND DISLIKES

  • Wildlife.  There aren’t many trails in our National Park lands that have the proximity to wildlife offered on the Anhinga Trail.
  • Changing colors.  We’ve managed to hike this trail twice and the difference in color between the two times was truly amazing.  If we had to pick one time that was incredible, it was definitely dusk. However, if you have time, we recommend going twice.
  • Accessibility.   This hike was great for our kids-it was flat, full of action right from the beginning and had multiple places to sit.
  • Exposure to sun.  If you visit this trail during the peak of the day, it is hot (in the summertime it is sweltering) without any shade.
  • Crowds.  When we visited during the mid-morning, that was the time of the day that the trail was super busy.  Just be aware of that! We visited another time after it stopped raining, and had the trail nearly to ourselves!

THINGS TO DO NEAR THE ANHINGA TRAIL

If you are visiting Everglades National Park, it would be a shame to just stop at the Anhinga Trail.  A few other nearby recommendations include:

  • Walk the 0.5-mile Gumbo Limbo Trail . This trail is through shaded hardwood, and gives you plenty of information about the local flora (with signs).
  • Visit the Ernest F. Coe Visitor Center . This has a ton of information about the local wildlife, interesting exhibits and access to rangers.

FINAL THOUGHTS AND TIPS

  • The Anhinga Trail can get crowded.  Even though you’ll be able to find parking, you are likely to have 300 new friends with you when you hike if you come during peak hours.  We recommend coming in the earlier part of the morning, or just after a rainstorm or in the evening for the best experience.
  • The wildlife is typically most active before it gets too hot during the day, so if you like to see the critters moving around, definitely come before 10:00 in the morning.

Anhinga Trail

Top choice in Everglades National Park

If you do just one walk in the Everglades, make sure it's on the Anhinga Trail. Gators sun on the shoreline, anhinga spear their prey and wading birds stalk haughtily through the reeds. You'll get a close-up view of wildlife on this short (0.8 mile) trail at the Royal Palm Visitor Center. There are various overlooks, where you can sometimes see dozens of alligators piled together in the day.

Come back at night (be sure to bring a flashlight) for a view of the gators swimming along the waterways – sometimes right beside you. The park offers periodic ranger-led walks along the boardwalk at night, though you can always do it yourself. Seeing the glittering eyes of alligators prowling the waterways by flashlight is an unforgettable experience!

Boardwalk into a swamp

Anhinga Trail

For most visitors, the Anhinga Trail is their first glimpse into Everglades National Park. It’s short, and the alligators are right there: hard to miss

Everglades National Park   |   Royal Palm Hammock ( 25.381913, -80.609572 )      0.8 miles

For most visitors, the Anhinga Trail is their first and perhaps only glimpse into Everglades National Park.

Its proximity to the park entrance guarantees its popularity, and wildlife here is so common and complacent you’ll hear the tourists asking “is that alligator real?”

Yes, they are. Don’t get too close.

Alligator on a swampy berm

Open dawn to dusk. Although leashed pets are allowed in the park, we strongly recommend you do not bring pets on this hike. Alligators are everywhere.

From the Visitor Center you will have a chance to see many wading birds and sunning alligators from various observation platforms throughout the boardwalk.

The loop is fully accessible. Parents should keep close watch on their children.

From the Royal Palm Visitor Center, follow the broad paved path along Taylor Slough. It is a segment of the original Ingraham Highway, which ran from Homestead to Flamingo.

Taylor Slough is one of the few waterways in this portion of the park that retains water year-round, no matter how bad the drought may be elsewhere.

Great egret flying over a lily-dotted swamp

The water makes this a haven for wildlife. Cormorants hang out along the stone wall. Alligators sun on the grass.

Walk down to the end of the pavement, passing a boardwalk on the left at 0.2 mile. Continue straight ahead to an observation deck with a view over the marsh.

In spring, you’ll see nesting egrets, herons, and roseate spoonbills in the trees.

Anhinga Trail

Return and turn right to follow the boardwalk along the slough. Alligators hang out on the hummocky islands.

The odd-looking cluster of trees are pond apple, a South Florida native tree with thick trunks and an apple that appeals to raccoons and other wildlife, but not to humans! It tastes like turpentine.

Cormorants cluster on the pond apple trees and the roof of the rain shelter. Look closely at the trees in the summer months to see sprays of delicate orchids.

Anhinga Trail, Everglades National Park

Continue along the boardwalk to a spur trail on the right. Follow this out to an observation platform over a broader part of the slough, where alligators drift through the inky water.

Return to the main path and turn right. The boardwalk offers expansive views of the sawgrass prairies off to the right before it ends again at the paved trail.

Turn right and take your time, enjoying the wildlife, as you return back to the parking area.

Anhinga Trail Everglades (Alligator Spotting Tips!)

For those wishing to explore the everglades on foot, the Anhinga Trail which starts from Royal Palm Visitor Center in the Everglades is the best place in the National Park.

We absolutely love visiting National Parks in the USA. In fact, it is probably our favourite thing to do in the US. Keep reading to find out everything you need to know about this trail in the Everglades National Park, Florida!

See more –  Best Hiking Trails in the Everglades .

The Everglades National Park is not hugely set up for exploration on foot. There are of course some trails that you can easily complete on foot (like the Gumbo Limbo Trail) but most area are best explored by bike or airboat. See our guide on the best everglades airboat tours if you want more information on airboats.

The Anhinga Trail Everglades is an exception to this general rule and can be very easily be explored by foot.

The Anhinga Trail Everglades is an extremely do-able trail for all ages and abilities.

About the Trail

The Anhinga Trail is great for animal spotting but take note it is an open trail with very little shade.

The trail starts as a paved track and moves onto a boardwalk over the top of swamplands.

Along the trail there are some small shelters where you can retreat from the sun and rehydrate (with you own water) but it is largely very open air.

The trail length & time to complete

The Anhinga Trail is only 0.8 miles (1200 meters) round trip.

It takes no more than 1 hour of time to complete the trail including time allocated to take photographs.

As we stated above, people of all ages and abilities were walking the Anhinga Trail. We saw young families and older people alike walking the trail.

It is really an activity that is great for everyone!

Alligator Spotting Tips!

Once of the reasons we like this trail so much is that the likelihood of seeing an alligator is high.

We saw far more alligators on the the Anhinga Trail Everglades than we did in Shark Valley for example. It is without doubt one of the best places to see alligators in Florida .

If you want to spot an alligator keep your eyes peeled just off the path in the bushes.

We saw quite a few alligators retreating from the sun in the shade just off the main trail. It can be hard to spot them as you walk along the path as they camouflage in very well.

We spotted the big buy below just off the walking path, hiding in the bushes.

Baby Alligator Spotting

If you visit in the Spring you may be lucky enough to spot some baby alligators along the trail like we did. They are the cutest!

Half way through the Anhinga Trail, the path turns into a boardwalk. As you peer over the boardwalk you will see many lilypads in the Spring and Summer time.

We saw many baby alligators, I would say around 15, basking in the sun on top of the lillypads.

Do you spot the little cutie in the photo below?

Anhinga Trail Alligator Attack

Alligators, unlike the Australian crocodile are not overly aggressive.

You can stand quite close by and stand a slim chance of getting attacked. Try standing that close to a salty crocodile (Actually, don’t you would be dinner)

In saying that there are occasionally fatalities when people act stupidly around the alligators.

Remember, alligators are wild animals. It is prohibited to feed them and you should not go too close. Stay on the path at all times to minimise the risk of an attack.

Deaths in the Everglades

Believe it or not most of the deaths in the Everglades are not related to alligators but to airboats.

It is important that you choose a well respected airboat company as if the driver acts reckless the airboat can flip, causing fatalities.

There has been 7 airboat death and over 100 injuries in the past 3 years.

In comparison, we could not find an alligator related death in the Everglades. An alligator somewhere in Florida kills a person every 1-2 years.

Other Animals along Anhinga Trail

We absolutely love spotting animals in the wild and there are many possibilities to spot animals along the Anhinga Trail.

As we were beginning the trail we read that panthers actually live in the area! Sadly, we didn’t see any during our time and it is unlikely you would either as there are less than 100 Floridian Panthers living in the wild today. So sad!

We did manage to see some other cool animals though!

We saw many white herons as we walked along the Anhinga Trail. We also spotted a turtle swimming around in the water as we peered off the boardwalk looking for alligators.

Tip: You can find more information about this walk and other wildlife at the Ernest F Coe Visitor Centre .

Anhinga Trail Best Time?

We visited the Everglades in September and it was extremely hot. It was so hot it was borderline uncomfortable to walk the trail.

In saying this, we absolutely loved seeing the abundance of wildlife in Spring including the baby alligators.

In the Summer/Spring months, there is water in the areas underneath the Anhinga Trail. A wet swampy area brings a lot more wildlife to the area.

In the Winter months, when it stops raining, the river of grass drys up. On the plus side, there are virtually no mosquitoes!

We have previously visited the Everglades in winter, but not the Anhinga Trail. It was still very hot.

There is a saying in Florida there are 2 seasons – hot and very hot. This rings true for us!

What to bring on your hike?

Here is what we would suggest you wear/bring along to be comfortable on your hike:

  • An umbrella (not for the rain for the sun!)
  • Long sleeve hiking shirt (breathable)
  • Long hiking pants (breathable)
  • Mosquito bracelets

The hike has very little shade so we suggested many of the above items to keep sun safe on your hike.

What to do next/what is nearby?

The Anhinga Trail is in the exact same area as the Gumbo Limbo Trail (you park in the same carpark to enter)

The Gumbo Limbo Trail is a shorter trail and it is more covered from the sun.

If you arrive in the heat of the day we would suggest doing the Gumbo Limbo Trail first and then moving on to the Anhinga Trail.

The Everglades is not far from the Florida Keys. If you visit in the morning you can easily still make the scenic drive to Key Largo which has awesome activities including some of the best snorkeling in the US, nice free beaches and yummy Key Lime Pie !

Anhinga Trail vs Shark Valley

Anhinga Trail and Shark Valley trails are the two most popular trails in the Everglades National Park.

Which to pick? It depends it you want to travel by tram/bike or foot.

Anhinga Trail is much better for walking than Shark Valley. We also saw more animals on this trail.

Parking at the Anhinga Trail

There is a big parking lot at the start of the trail so you should have no trouble finding a park.

To access this trail you will need an Everglades Pass which costs $25 USD for a week (per vehicle). We purchased the $80 USD yearly pass which gives us access to all National Parks for a year. Pretty good value if you ask me.

If you take an airboat tour before entering into the National Park gates, you will need to pay a $6 USD National Park fee to the airboat operator.

This can be deducted off the price of your pass when you enter through the National Park gates.

Where to stay in the Everglades?

You are able to camp inside the Everglades in the Flamingo Campground.

As it was my birthday when we visited, we decided to be a bit more comfortable in the heat and stayed in the closest town: Homestead .

If you are looking for a nice option in Homestead which won’t break the bank but is very comfortable and clean, check out where we stayed here .

Silhouette Anhingas

  • ORDER: Suliformes
  • FAMILY: Anhingidae

Habitat Marshes

Basic Description

A dark body stealthily swims through a lake with only a snakelike head poking above the surface. What may sound like the Loch Ness monster is actually an Anhinga, swimming underwater and stabbing fish with its daggerlike bill. After every dip, it strikes a regal pose on the edges of shallow lakes and ponds, with its silvery wings outstretched and head held high to dry its waterlogged feathers. Once dry, it takes to the sky, soaring high on thermals stretched out like a cross.

Find This Bird

When Anhingas aren't slyly swimming through shallow waters with only their head sticking out, they are easy to spot hanging themselves out to dry. Look around the borders of lakes and ponds with forested edges for a sunning bird. In the heat of the late afternoon, look up in the sky for Anhingas taking advantage of rising thermals. Despite being a waterbird, they soar quite well and are frequently seen soaring at great heights with a distinctive cross-shaped silhouette.

Other Names

  • Anhinga Americana (Spanish)
  • Anhinga d'Amérique (French)
  • The Anhinga's distinctive shape earned it the nickname "water turkey" for its turkeylike tail, and "snake bird" for its long snakelike neck as it slithers through the water.
  • Unlike most waterbirds, the Anhinga doesn't have waterproof feathers. While that may seem like a disadvantage for their watery lifestyle, their wet feathers and dense bones help them slowly submerge their bodies under the water so they can slyly stalk fish.
  • The name Anhinga comes from the Tupi Indians in Brazil, meaning "devil bird" or "evil spirit of the woods."
  • The oldest recorded Anhinga was at least 12 years old when it was shot in Louisiana in 1948.

Walking The Anhinga Trail In Everglades National Park Practically Ensures Visitors Will See Alligators

Alligators are some of Florida's most interesting residents, and nine times out of ten, you'll catch a glimpse of one on the Anhinga Trail.

There’s plenty to see at Everglades National Park , South Florida’s 1.5 million acre park that offers stunning views of everything from marshes to mangroves. Wildlife sightings are also extremely common here as it is a sweeping and diverse ecosystem that houses plenty of species—including alligators.

Visitors often take guided tours through the Everglades—but, if you are short on time and still want to see the best the park has to offer, the best trail to check out is the Anhinga Trail . Known for its abundance of wildlife, the Anhinga Trail is the perfect outing for any explorer looking to get a taste of the Everglades. The best part is, the area is loaded with ‘gators, so you’ll most definitely spot one if you hike here.

More About The Trail

There are several access points to Everglades National Park, but the beauty of the Anhinga Trail is its position located close to the park entrance. Spend less time driving and more time soaking up the Everglades (and spotting alligators) when you opt for a hike on the beautiful Anhinga Trail.

This is a self-guided trail, so feel free to take your time and get plenty of pics of the local wildlife. Alligators aren’t the only animals you can spot here, the area is also known as a home to anhingas (long-necked birds similar to cormorants, and the source of the park’s namesake), turtles, herons, egrets, and more. During the winter, the spot is a popular gathering place for many birds because of its proximity to the marshland areas.

Take A Hike!

The trail is a 0.8-mile round trip loop that is flat and wheelchair accessible, making it perfect for visitors of all ages and skill levels.

How To Get There

There are two Visitor Centers in this area and you can access the trail quite easily from both. Simply take the Homestead entrance to the park and follow the signs to your desired starting point.

  • From the Royal Palm Visitor Center (approximately 4 miles from the park entrance), follow the path along Taylor Slough—a waterway that was once a part of the original Ingraham Highway running from Homestead (the park’s current location) to Flamingo.

What’s interesting about Taylor Slough is that it stays water-filled all year long, making it a popular wildlife hangout. The Royal Palm Visitor Center has a ton of information about the park—including a small bookstore ( open 10:00 am-4:00 pm daily ), and educational talks given by park rangers.

The Ernest Coe Visitor Center is located right at the Homestead entrance to the park. Here, visitors can check out the bookstore. Learn more about the area at this popular stop, which includes an educational movie and interactive display. The trails are just a short drive from here.

  • Simply follow the Main Park Road for approximately 2 miles until you see a turnoff to Royal Palm Hummock. After turning here, keep following the road for another 2 miles until you see the parking area.

Dazzling Natural Landscapes And Plenty Of Wildlife

Be sure to stop at the nearby observation deck for a spectacular view over the marsh. There are plenty of birds in this area, so have your camera ready!

If you follow the boardwalk along Taylor Slough, you will encounter alligators galore who enjoy hanging out on the little islands in the water. The scenery is also dominated by the pond apple tree, native to South Florida, and a fave snack for animals like raccoons. The pond apple trees are also home to other impressive plant life (check out the gorgeous orchids in the summer!)

By following the boardwalk to the wider part of the Slough, visitors will encounter yet another observation deck— a prime place for alligator spotting .

The wildlife is not the only thing to see on this walk, but if you’re determined to not leave Florida until you see an alligator, you won’t be disappointed. The trail is also known for its amazing views of the sawgrass prairies, so take a moment to admire the sprawling vista before heading back to the marsh.

The Devil Is In The Details

Outlined below is some basic information about the Anhinga Trail. However, always be sure to consult with the National Park Service website before visiting to learn more about the latest park conditions.

  • Address: Everglades National Park, 40001 SR 9336, Homestead.
  • Park Hours: Open from dawn to dusk every day.
  • Visitor Center Hours: 8:00am-5:00pm (December to April) and 9:00am-5:00pm (May to November).
  • Fees/Permit Info: There is an entrance fee of $25/vehicle, $20/motorcycle, $8/cyclist/pedestrian that is good for one week.

Everglades National Park is a must-visit for anyone spending time in South Florida. With plenty to see and do, visitors will love the gorgeous landscape, diverse wildlife, and the overall experience of spending time in this unique region. The Anhinga Trail is the perfect introduction for any visitor to this expansive park, so start here to get a taste of the Everglades —or make this your go-spot for ‘gators galore and sights that showcase the singular beauty of the Everglades.

History of Voronezh

Foundation of voronezh.

The first mention of Voronezh dates back to 1177 in connection with the battle of the Vladimir and Ryazan princes and the escape of Yaropolk of Ryazan to “Voronozh”. Some historians suggest, based on fragments of these chronicles, that Voronezh (Voronozh) existed as a settlement back in the 12th century. Other historians believe that the chronicle meant only the Voronezh River.

The second, very significant, mention of Voronezh in the chronicles refers to 1237, when the conquest of the Russian principalities by Khan Batu began during the Western campaign of the Mongols. The Russian princes decided to give the first battle to the enemies “and came out against them in Voronozh”, but were defeated. Again, the word “Voronozh” probably means the Voronezh River, not a settlement.

The Tsar’s decree on the foundation of Voronezh has not yet been found. The archive has an order of the boyar Nikita Yuriev from 1586 on the reorganization of the guard service on the southern outskirts of the Moscow state and on the construction of two fortified settlements: Livny and Voronezh. Thus, the official year of the foundation of Voronezh is 1586.

Located on the trade route at the confluence of the Voronezh River with the Don, Voronezh could not remain an exclusively military town for a long time. In 1615, its population was about 7 thousand people. From the middle of the 17th century, Russian and foreign ambassadors to the Ottoman Empire, the Crimean Khanate, and the Caucasus travelled through Voronezh. It became part of the Belgorod line - fortifications that protected the Russian state from the raids of the Crimean Tatars until the end of the 17th century.

More Historical Facts…

Voronezh - the cradle of the Russian navy

In 1695, during the first Azov campaign, Russian troops were unable to capture the fortress of Azov standing on the bank of the Don River, several kilometers from its confluence with the Sea of Azov. The siege was unsuccessful, as the Ottoman garrison in the fortress received support from the sea.

Therefore, Peter I decided to start building a fleet. Voronezh was chosen for this because of its strategic position on the Voronezh River flowing into the Don. Secondly, there were forests near the town that could be used as building materials. Thirdly, the residents of Voronezh had experience in the construction and use of river vessels.

In 1696, as a result of the second campaign, the Azov fortress was taken by Russian troops. The Russian fleet prevented the supply of people, ammunition and food to the fortress. From 1696 to 1711, about 215 ships were built in Voronezh, including the ship “Goto Predestinatsia” (The Providence of God) - the first Russian ship of the line.

In Voronezh, the organizational foundations for the subsequent construction of the Russian fleets in the Baltic and Black Seas were laid. The first Admiralty in Russia was also created here. However, the military shipyard in Voronezh did not exist for long due to the gradual shallowing of the rivers.

Voronezh in the 18th-19th centuries

In 1709, Voronezh became part of the Azov Governorate. In 1711, its center moved from Azov to Tambov, and in 1715 - to Voronezh. In 1725, after the death of the first Russian emperor, the region was renamed into the Voronezh Governorate. In 1745, the first educational institution was opened - the theological seminary (closed in 1918, reopened in 1993).

In 1748, Voronezh was badly damaged by fire. Almost the entire center, which was located on the bank of the river, burned down. After that, the center of Voronezh again began to be located in the place of today’s Universitetskaya Square.

In 1774, after another big fire, Catherine II approved the general plan for the regular development of Voronezh. In the second half of the 18th - the first half of the 19th centuries, Voronezh was one of the centers of the Russian cloth industry.

In 1781, the coat of arms of Voronezh was approved: “The shield is divided in two, in the upper part in a golden field - a two-headed black eagle, and in the lower part in a red field - an overturned jar, from which the Voronezh River flows”.

In 1863, according to the census of residents, Voronezh numbered 38,672 people (the 12th largest city in the Russian Empire). The first public library was opened in 1864. In 1868, Voronezh was connected by railway with Moscow, in 1871 - with Rostov-on-Don, in 1894 - with Kursk.

Voronezh in the first half of the 20th century

In 1913, the first secular higher educational institution in Voronezh was opened - the Agricultural Institute named after Peter the Great (Voronezh State Agrarian University named after Emperor Peter I). In 1914, the population of the city was 93,700 people. During the First World War, reserve military units were formed in Voronezh, defense enterprises from the western regions of the Russian Empire were evacuated here.

In 1928, Voronezh became the center of the Central Black Earth Oblast. And after its liquidation in 1934, it remained the center of Voronezh Oblast. On August 2, 1930, the first Soviet airborne assault was parachuted two kilometers from Voronezh. Today, August 2 is celebrated as the birthday of the Russian airborne forces.

In 1932, two large factories were built on the left bank - aviation and rubber. One of the most important industrial and scientific complexes in the USSR was formed in the city. Many types of aircraft produced in Voronezh began to enter the Red Air Force several years before the outbreak of World War II. In 1939, the population of Voronezh was 326,932 people.

In October-November 1941, during the Second World War, most of the large enterprises were evacuated to the east. From July 7, 1942 to January 25, 1943, the right-bank part of Voronezh, being under German occupation, suffered significant damage, about 18 thousand houses were destroyed (92% of all residential buildings). The active defense of Voronezh helped the Red Army to withstand and win in Stalingrad.

In November 1945, it was decided to prioritize the restoration of 15 oldest Russian cities, including Voronezh. In the late 1940s, the restoration of industrial enterprises was completed, by the mid-1950s - residential and public buildings. In 1956, the population of the city exceeded 400 thousand people.

Voronezh in the second half of the 20th century

In 1968, the first serial Soviet supersonic passenger aircraft Tu-144 was produced at the Voronezh Aviation Plant; in October 1977 - the first Soviet airbus (wide-body aircraft) Il-86. In 1972, the Voronezh reservoir was built, which became the largest in the region.

In 1983, about 6 km from the city limits, the construction of the Voronezh nuclear power plant for heat supply began. In 1990, under the influence of the Chernobyl disaster, it was suspended on the basis of a referendum held among Voronezh residents. The station, which was approximately 65% completed, was mothballed. In 2020, work began on its dismantling. In 1989, the population of Voronezh was about 887,000.

In the 1990s, in connection with the collapse of the USSR, the largest industrial enterprises of Voronezh were on the verge of bankruptcy due to a sharp decline in defense orders and the breakdown of existing economic ties. A lot of churches were returned to the Russian Orthodox Church; their restoration was carried out.

In the early and mid-1990s, agreements on twinning relations were concluded between Voronezh and the cities of Charlotte (USA), Chongqing (China) and Sliven (Bulgaria).

In 2008, Voronezh was awarded the title “City of Military Glory”. In 2009, a new Cathedral of the Annunciation, the third largest Orthodox church in Russia, was built to replace the destroyed one. On December 17, 2012, a millionth resident was born in the city, which made Voronezh the 15th city in Russia with a population of over 1 million.

Voronezh - Features

Initially, the city stood on the banks of the Voronezh River. In the 1970s, it was turned into a reservoir - one of the largest reservoirs in the world located entirely within the city. The Voronezh reservoir divides the city into two parts. Its center, cultural institutions, embankments, the best establishments, and the most prestigious districts are located on the right bank. On the left bank there are industrial enterprises, residential areas, and one beautiful park. The two banks are connected by three bridges: the longest of them is Severnyy Bridge (2 km long).

There are several versions of the origin of the name of the Voronezh River after which the city of Voronezh was named. Most likely it comes from the word “voron” (“raven”) or “voronoy” (black) reflecting the dark color of the water in the Voronezh River. The City Day of Voronezh is celebrated annually on the third Saturday of September.

Voronezh is located in a temperate zone. Winter is moderately frosty with a permanent snow cover that forms in December. Quite often there are thaws accompanied by rains (especially in December). Also there are often drops in temperature below minus 20 degrees Celsius, which can last up to a week or more.

Summer is warm, even hot (especially July and the first half of August), in some years - rainy, in some years - dry. Autumn is mild and rainy. The Voronezh reservoir is covered with ice in late November - early December. Spring ice drift lasts from March to April. The average temperature in January is minus 7.6 degrees Celsius, in July - plus 22.7 degrees Celsius.

Voronezh is the economic center of the Voronezh region and one of the largest economic centers in Russia. The leading sectors of the economy are food, chemical, radio-electronic industries, mechanical engineering and retail trade. The largest enterprises of Voronezh are Voronezh Joint-Stock Aircraft Building Company, Voronezh Mechanical Plant, Voronezh Ceramic Plant, Carriage Repair Plant named after V.I. Thalmann.

This city is a major transport hub, the transport system of which consists of air, rail and road transport systems. The Peter the Great Voronezh International Airport offers regular flights to Moscow, St. Petersburg, Sochi, Kaliningrad, Samara, Krasnodar, Novosibirsk, Kazan, Yekaterinburg, Rostov-on-Don. Public transport is represented by mini-buses, buses and trolleybuses.

Voronezh is worth visiting not only for its interesting museums, beautiful parks and picturesque squares. Here you can also see funny monuments to animals - heroes of famous literary works, replicas of the first ships of the Russian navy, unusual buildings in the Art Nouveau and Gothic style of the late 19th-20th centuries.

There are a lot of traditional Russian churches, theaters, and former merchant mansions in Voronezh that catch the eye with their noble and elegant appearance. Also, tourists should pay attention to the monuments perpetuating the image of the heroes of the Second World War. The Voronezh Sea, a huge reservoir stretching for tens of kilometers, is of no less interest.

Main Attractions of Voronezh

Monument to White Bim Black Ear - one of the unofficial symbols of Voronezh; a dog sitting on a pavement and patiently waiting for the return of its owner. The monument is dedicated to the main character of the story of the same name created by the Voronezh writer Gavriil Troyepolsky. The monument is located at Revolyutsii Avenue, 48, near the puppet theater “Shut” (“Jester”).

Monument to Kitten from Lizyukova Street - a monument dedicated to the kitten Vasily from the Soviet cartoon “Kitten from Lizyukova Street”, who, according to the plot, lived on Lizyukova Street in Voronezh. The monument looks like a tree on the branches of which a kitten and a crow are sitting and conducting a conversation. Generala Lizyukova Street, 4.

Memorial Complex “Victory Square” - one of the central squares of Voronezh with the memorial complex in honor of the defenders of the city in 1942-1943. At the northern end of the square, there is a monument made of red granite and metal, consisting of 12 figures depicting all branches of the Red Army, as well as partisans and militias. The eternal flame burns in front of the monument. At the southern end of the square, there is a 40-meter high stele.

Annunciation Cathedral (1998-2009) - the third largest Orthodox church in Russia and one of the tallest Orthodox churches in the world (85 meters) constructed in a picturesque Russian-Byzantine style and located in close proximity to Victory Square. Revolyutsii Avenue, 14B.
