Amazing Prague: 3 Day Extension to Viking River Cruise

  • By runawaywidow
  • July 8, 2023

Bridge in Prague

The beautiful city of Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic, illuminates over the Vltava River welcoming the six million visitors each year. The city’s 1000-year-old history filled with castles, spires, statues and gothic architecture create a sense of wonder to all.

My last trip to central Europe was in 1984 and certain areas were off-limits because they were communist and who would want to go there even if you were allowed. But over the years I kept hearing about the fairy tale awe of Prague with its castle, bridges, history and charm. Within the historic center are a variety of exceptional architecture styles and monuments which meet the criteria for the UNESCO world heritage list.

Since the Viking Grand European river cruise we scheduled started in Budapest and ended in Amsterdam I made the decision to add the 3 day extension to our trip before the cruise and we were not disappointed!

My travel agent assured me that the Viking cruise line has the best airfares and routes, but I am not sure if that is true. Our flight changed in the time between booking and our departure date from 2 to 3 connecting flights. The day before our flight I downloaded our boarding passes only to discover that while I seemed secure in my business class upgraded seat of 2A, I was nervous to inform my husband that he’d be sitting in 86H. That sure seemed far away from me. Not ideal for our 4 year anniversary cruise.

viking tours prague

After several phone calls to Viking and my travel agent Rosemary Martinek , we eventually both were seated on the same floor. It seems the 86H was on the second level of the Lufthansa flight. With a few smiles, I was able to make some adjustments once we boarded so that our seats were next to each other in the aisle. All was well, and we enjoyed watching the movies and dining before sleeping for a few hours on our way to Frankfurt.

From Frankfurt to Prague it was a quick one hour flight and we were relieved to exit with our bags and locate a gentleman holding the Viking sign, just like they said he would. Quite a few people gathered and we realized that not all the people were going to our hotel or were even going to be on our ship. Viking has many river cruises and every day people come to Prague for their before or after cruises.

Day 1 – Arrive in Prague

Most people were headed to either the large Hilton or Marriott hotel located just outside the city center. Easy enough to walk to the Old Town area from this location, but missing the charm I was seeking.

Our driver brought us through narrow cobblestone streets into the city center to The Augustine, an old monastery that actually has a library with books dated to the 13th century. Our room was nicely appointed with antiques and it was fun exploring the hotel with its quiet hallways and private gardens.

We unpacked quickly, eager to walk around. Our hotel was located just a few blocks from the famous Charles bridge and Vltava River. After exploring the bridge, admiring the Baroque statues and taking photos we looked for dinner. The cobblestone streets in Old Town are filled with gift shops and restaurants.

We found a charming place to eat dinner outside that served the best pork knuckle and beef goulash with potato pancakes ever. Another highlight was the price tag. Meals are very inexpensive in Prague which makes it a popular place to visit for the younger crowd, as noted by the number of bachelor and bachelorette groups parading the streets as the evening went on.

viking tours prague

It was fun to wander the city on our own that first night. We strolled across the bridge at sunset with lots of other people. I tried one of the tasty chimney cakes and we easily found our way back to the hotel. After a nightcap in the hotel bar with an outdoor garden, we called it a night. If you did not want to explore on your own, Viking does offer a Prague by Night excursion for an additional cost.

Day 2 – Prague

Since we booked a three day extension with Viking, they provided us with different options for included and available to purchase excursions. In addition, here are some of the places you want to visit if you did not stick to their plan:

Prague Castle

St. Vitus Cathedral

Charles Bridge

Vltava River

Lennon Wall

Petrin Hill and Petrin Tower

Old Town Square

Prague Astronomical Clock

Jewish Quarter: Old New Synagogue and Cemetery

Prague National Museum

Prague Communism Museum

Parizska Street (for deal on famous designer goods)

Our first morning began with a delicious sit down breakfast at The Augustine before embarking on the 4 hour Panoramic Prague included tour. A bus picked us up and our first stop was Prague Castle and the Gothic style St. Vitus Cathedral on top of the hill. Our guide waked around with us and pointed out bits of historical stories.

viking tours prague

We then passed the residence of the Czech president and took in the beautiful views of the city. Next we boarded the bus again and headed to the area where our hotel was located. We walked across the Charles bridge into Old Town where we watched the 15th- century Astronomical clock strike noon and the 12 apostles walk past the tiny windows of the clock. We had been scheduled to walk the Jewish Quarter and visit the Old-New Synagogue, the oldest in Europe and the Jewish cemetery, but the thunderstorm ended our tour early.

viking tours prague

By the time we arrived back at our hotel, the rain had stopped. On the bus tour we noticed the Polish embassy nearby our hotel and there seemed to be some sort of festival going on. We grabbed an umbrella and walked over and what a fun surprise.

viking tours prague

Booths were set up around the gardens, dancers dressed in traditional garb and live music on the stage. Looking closer the booths were selling beer, kielbasa and other yummy foods. Unfortunately we did not have too many Czech koruna to buy food with, but some booths accepted credit cards. We enjoyed the music and food until the rain started again and then ended up under a few big trees with some friendly locals.

viking tours prague

Back in the hotel we showered and got ready for our additional evening excursion with Viking: the Prague Folklore dinner. A bus picked us up and took us into the countryside for a dinner and entertainment. The traditional dinner was served with unlimited beer and wine. A young woman sang, a couple came out and did some folk dancing and taught eager participants some traditional dance movers. We also heard from three talented musicians on the violin, cello and dulcimer. Everyone agreed this excursion was terrific.

Day 3 – Sunday in Prague

Prague has such a rich history and Viking offered additional tours dating back to 12th century, the Hapsburg dynasty, Nazi invasion and the Jewish ghetto and even a communist museum. We decided to take the 4 hour tour called “Historic Prague by E-bike”. We have never tried riding E-bikes before but it seemed like a fun way to see the city.

A bus picked us up at the hotel and brought us to a bike shop located right in the center of town. Our young guide showed us how to use the hand brakes and switch to increase the level of force to use when needed to climb inclines. Then he sent my husband Pete off around the block to get a practice run.

viking tours prague

I bit my nails as I watched him take off up the cobble stoned street and around the yellow building. Would he make it back? He is still recovering from reverse should surgery – I felt like a mom when the 5 year old takes off on that first bike ride. A huge sigh of relief as he turned the corner back to join our group. After we all had a practice run, our guide led the way through the narrow streets and up the hill towards the castle.

viking tours prague

He stopped and told us about the pictures above the doors of the homes which was the way people knew the address and occupation of the resident – the bread, the violin, the horse. We left the city streets and followed him through Petrin Hill, past Petrin Tower, a smaller version of the Eiffel Park up near the castle.

We stopped for photos and then continued through Letna park which was filled with local on this Sunday afternoon. Stopping to have a beer at one of the outdoor cafes was a fun way to learn more about living in Prague from our guide.

viking tours prague

He told us that no one is religious or goes to the 300 churches in the city. During the 40 years of communism religion was basically outlawed. In fact, the police used the church steeples to spy on the people. If they saw someone go into a church or to a government office to request a travel visa, their family would be assigned the “bad jobs”. Wow, what a way to live! One thing he did tell us was not to give money to hobos on the street, even if they have a dog which he said would be drugged. He told us that everyone can get a job so that behavior is just not tolerated.

viking tours prague

After the park, we rode our e-bikes back onto the highway with the trams and cars, then across the bridge and over to the Lennon Wall. In 1980, the communists wouldn’t tell the people that John Lennon had died. Someone left and came back and painted a picture of John Lennon on the wall to tell the people what had happened.

The police would paint over it and every day more graffiti would appear with pictures of Lennon. It was a silent protest against the communist government and a call for greater freedom. Even the day we visited, someone had painted on the wall and Pete got some wet paint on the back of his shirt. It washed out once we got back to the room so no worries, just unexpected.

viking tours prague

The last place we stopped on our bike ride was the Franz Kafka museum. We did not go inside, but there is a funny statue outside of two men having a peeing contest over the map of the Czech Republic. Not really sure the meaning of this one, but it is entertaining.

viking tours prague

Our last night in Prague we went out looking for a place for dinner and ended up back at the place we found the first night. Still delicious, but we ordered different items from the menu.

Back at the hotel it was time to pack and get ready for the 15 day river cruise. Viking told us we would be picked up at 7:00 am and that a bag breakfast and lunch would be ready for us in the lobby for the 7 hour drive to Budapest and the Danube river. Sure enough we joined other travelers headed on our cruise as well as a number of different cruises that begin in Budapest.

viking tours prague

If you do this trip, I recommend that you get some money to use in Prague and Hungary. Bathrooms charge about 50 cents but only in the local currency. I found this to be a hassle since I never seemed to have the exact change. Also someone recommended to exchange small amounts at a time in the ATM machines since small shops don’t always have change for the large bills.

I highly recommend this extension to any of the Viking cruises and to spend a bit of time on your own exploring this beautiful city. I hope to come back again some day. Stay tuned for my review of the 15 day Grand European Tour river cruise from Budapest to Amsterdam.

DISCLOSURE: I did not receive a free trip or any perks from Viking. This is my own blog and my thoughts on our trip. As an Amazon associate, I earn from qualifying purchases.

Thanks so much for the pictures & your take on the trip…looked wonderful!

Thanks for reading. I can’t wait to go back again!!

Thanks for bringing some long-buried memories of Prague to the surface. I remember the city fondly. I did a Viking cruise with my mom several years ago and we did the Amsterdam extension before the cruise. If time and money allow, I would always recommend the extension. Why not?

Or admire the Astronomical Clock on the Old Town City Hall. You can also join an optional excursion to Lobkowicz Palace at Prague Castle. (B) Day 11 | Krakow, Poland. After breakfast, check out of your hotel and transfer to Kraków. Situated on Poland’s Vistula River, it is one of the country’s oldest cities. This evening, enjoy a lively performance of klezmer folk music with dinner. (B, D) Day 12 | Krakow. Discover the beautifully preserved Old Town of Kraków, including its vast 13th-century Market Square. It is one of the more unique public squares of Old Europe, thanks to the enormous Renaissance Cloth Hall that stands at its center. Exotic imports such as colorful silk and aromatic spices once passed through its doors for trade. You will also visit Wawel Castle on Wawel Hill, once the residence of the kings of Poland and now a fascinating art museum. If you’d like, you can explore the magnificent Wieliczka Salt Mine on an optional excursion. (B) Day 13 | Krakow. After breakfast, journey just outside the city to Auschwitz. This preserved camp serves as a solemn reminder of the horrors of World War II and urges all who visit to never forget the sacredness of human life and dignity. Back in Kraków, you will have the afternoon on your own to visit the National Museum with its excellent collection of paintings, sculptures, decorative arts and military artifacts. Or visit Wawel Cathedral, where royal coronations were held and national heroes are entombed. (B) Day 14 | Czestochowa. Warsaw. Check out of your hotel this morning and travel to Warsaw. En route, you will visit the city of Czestochowa. Here, at the Pauline monastery of Jasna Góra, the famous Black Madonna painting draws millions of Catholic pilgrims from all over the world. Upon arrival in the Polish capital of Warsaw, you will have time to get to know the city on your own. (B) Day 15 | Warsaw. This morning, discover the incredible restoration of Warsaw’s Old Town. Completely demolished during World War II, historians and architects painstakingly rebuilt it to mirror its original beauty, using bricks and decorative elements salvaged from the rubble whenever possible. You will also visit the Warsaw Uprising Museum to learn about the valiant attempt of resistance fighters to liberate their city from Nazi Germany. (B) Day 16 | Warsaw. After breakfast, check out of your hotel and proceed to the airport for your return flight. (B) NOTE: Itinerary is subject to change without notice. Viking river cruise extension

My husband and I booked a 3 day extension of our Danube River cruise to Prague, Czech. Viking made our hotel arrangements for us and chose The Corinthia Hotel. As we arrived and saw the hotel, we could not have been happier. This high rise structure is modern and can accommodate most requests of US travelers. Staff is English speaking, rooms were spacious with all the usual amenities. The 2 restaurants (one was in remodel state) were excellent and service was good. Best of all, the hotel offers a shuttle daily running at frequent intervals to Old Town Square in Prague, a short distance away. I would not recommend this hotel for people who truly want a local Czech neighborhood experience, but for the traveler who wants convenience and modern amenities within walking distance of historic Prague, I would recommend it. More

Dear Jo Ann, Greetings from Prague. Thank you for sharing your experience with us and for the recommendation to other travellers. I am very happy that you enjoyed our restaurants and had an overall pleasant stay with us. We are looking forward to welcoming you back. Kind regards, Eric Pere, General Manager

We stayed here three nights at a club room which gave free access to the lounge, gym and pool area. The pool area is great with sauna and steam rooms. The view from the pool over the city is fantastic. The lounge provides free beer and wine together with snacks during the day and drinks in the evening between 18-19. The lounge offers great view over the city. The breakfast is also great with freshly baked bread and sparkling wine. The nearest subway station is a 2 minute walk from the hotel. The subway takes about 5-7 minutes to downtown. The Vysherad cathedral is a 15 minute walk from the hotel and this place offers stunning views and is not so crowded. Overall a great stay and we will definitely stay at this hotel the next time we come to Prague.

Dear Guest, Good afternoon. Thank you for sharing your review with us. I am delighted that you enjoyed your stay, particularly the benefits of the Executive floor. I am also happy that you found the location convenient for exploring the beautiful city of Prague. We are looking forward to welcoming you back. Kind regards, Eric Pere, General Manager

My husband and I spent 8 nights at this lovely hotel. We enjoyed our stay immensely and found the service to be great. Everything we asked for was attended to immediately. Our room was on the 20th floor which was no problem as there are. five elevators which are very efficient. The room was spacious with a king-sized bed, and we were able to prepare coffee or tea for ourselves. Showering was a little difficult as we had to get into the bath to do so and it was slightly cramped, but we soon got used to this! Breakfast was great with a very large choice. The lounges are pretty with beautiful flower arrangements. Irina, the concierge who took care of us for most of our stay, is a beautiful and extremely helpful person and she is happy to please in whichever way she can. The male concierge, whose name we can't recollect, was also great. The hotel is located in very close proximity to the Metro which is very convenient. For seniors over 70 there is no charge for any of the public transportation in the city. I would give this hotel a 4 plus grade as in the evenings the bed and room weren't straightened up after our taking an afternoon nap, nor was there a little chocolate placed on the pillow which makes for a warm welcome when returning to the room after an eveing out. Other than this we would highly recommend this hotel and would have no hesitation whatsoever to stay there again on our next visit to Prague..

Dear Guest, Good afternoon. Thank you for your comprehensive feedback and for the recommendation to other travellers. I am very pleased that you had a pleasant stay with us. We are looking forward to welcoming you back. Kind regards, Eric Pere, General Manager

Good location, good food, clean, friendly, need I say more, but I will. The hotel is surrounded by park walkways, local restaurants, local transportation and Viking cruise bus transport to city square. Hotel employees speak, English plus a variety of other languages -so - no problem communicating.

Dear Guest, Thank you for choosing Corinthia Hotel Prague for your stay. I am very pleased that we have met your expectations and you enjoyed your stay. We hope to see you back on your next visit to Prague. Wishing you a pleasant day. Kind regards, Eric Pere, General Manager

Imagine a beautiful, modern, huge hotel in Prague close to downtown. Now imagine it with staff, from the Concierge, Irina,to the front desk, to the maid service, the bellman, and the wait staff who treat you like family! The ambience of this hotel is elegantly quiet, but very busy! The rooms are nice, and clean. But the hallmark of this hotel is the staff who are friendly, welcoming, warm. It became a home away from home for us for seven days. Our original plan was to stay here as assigned by Viking Cruises for our post cruise extension for 3 nights, but we are from Houston, TX where Hurricane Harvey had other plans for us! The airports were closed, our flight was moved forward 4 days ( thank you KLM!) so we stayed here a week. I highly recommend Hotel Corinthia Prague, if you are planning to visit this beautiful city!

Dear Guest, Greetings from Prague. Thank you very much for your nice review and for the recommendation to other travellers. I am very pleased that you enjoyed your holidays with us and that you do not regret staying 4 days longer due to the Hurricane. Thank you for acknowledging the effort of our team. We do take pride in ensuring that our guests feel special during their stay. We are looking forward to welcoming you back. Kind regards, Eric Pere, General Manager

The hotel benefits from nice views and good location. Rooms are ok, comfortable look like new beds. Tiny bathroom. Poor breakfast, with inattentive staff focusing more on chatting than working. Outside seating would need better tables and floor renovation. Prepare to wait at the reception and lobby full of bus groups.

Dear Paul, Good afternoon. Thank you for taking the time to give us your feedback. We really appreciate your comments as they are extremely valuable for improving our services and guest's satisfaction. I regret to learn your stay did not reach your expectations in all aspects. I have shared your comments with the respective managers and corrective steps will be taken. We hope to have the opportunity of welcoming you again at the Corinthia Hotel Prague to prove our standards and make your stay memorable. Kind regards, Eric Pere, General Manager

Viking Prague Extension

Cool Cruiser

We are on the 3 night Prague extension for Viking river cruise. First of all, I highly recommend visiting Prague, it must be one of the most interesting, beautifully full of old-world charm cities of Europe. The old center is very walkable, albeit tennis shoes are highly recommended, and nearly everyone wears them, as most streets and sidewalks are cobblestone.  On hotels, Viking uses several. We are in the Hilton, and I urge anyone to stay in a different hotel - closer to the Old Quarter!  The Hilton while beautiful, is more in the business district, there is nothing of tourist interest nearby, and only 1 good restaurant, outside of the hotel itself.  It is quite a distance to walk to Old Town areas and it is very easy to loose one’s way in a mish-mash of street junctions, and street names that do not appear on tourist maps.  Also while fairly easy to take a taxi to the Old Town, it is very difficult to find a taxi from Old Town. There are no taxi stands near the Square, nor at the Prague Castle that we saw.

I was there last fall definitely see what you are getting at. Amawaterways also uses the Hilton (another ships group was there at the same time) but my group was put up a few streets over from there at the continental? I think it was

I believe that the higher rated hotels are in that area vs in old town. There are few good places to eat around the powder tower in the way to old town.

also beware the taxis. Prague is infamous for cabbies who pray on tourists to pay many times what they should. Usually starting by hiding or saying the meter is broken.

and yes make sure you have a phone with a map or something. Especially at night  Those tight streets don’t always go straight.

really good place to visit though.

reccomend looking up “honest guide Prague” on YouTube for some info on being a tourist in the town and some warnings about its less great side.
