Norwegian Sky Itineraries

Norwegian sky review, review of norwegian sky.

The 1999-built Norwegian Sky cruise ship is NCL's first Sky-class vessel, with sisterships Norwegian Sun and Costa Victoria (1996-2021).

The vessel (IMO number 9128532) is currently Bahamas- flagged (MMSI 308865000) and registered in Nassau .

History - construction and ownership

Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) is a subsidiary company of the shipping corporation Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd (NCLH). NCL was founded in 1966, headquartered in Miami (Florida USA) and publicly traded (NASDAQ) company listed on NYSE ( NYC ). NCLH's major shareholders are the corporations Apollo Global Management (American), Genting Group (Malaysian) and TPG Capital (American). In 2017, the brand NCL had a worldwide cruise market share 8,7% (passengers) and 8,4% (revenue). NCLH (shipowner) owns the brands NCL , Oceania and RSSC-Regent .

NCL Norwegian Sky cruise ship

The 2000-passenger ship Norwegian Sky started operations on August 9, 1999, with the inaugural 4-day roundtrip from Dover to Norway's Fjords. The cruise ship was refurbished and changed her name several times. She is designed in beautiful tropical colors. NCL Sky was originally ordered by Costa Cruises as Costa Olympia, but later the company refused the vessel. In the period 2004-2008, it was operated by NCL America and sailed as "Pride of Aloha" - USA- flagged , but owned by GHK-Genting Hong Kong.

Decks and Cabins

Norwegian Sky staterooms (1002 total, in 27 grades) include 15x Suites, 245x Balcony, 319x Oceanview and 423x Inside cabins. Most staterooms are sized 120-150 ft2 (11-14 m2). The largest accommodations are the Owners Suites (350 ft2 / 32 m2, with terrace sized 300 ft2 / 28 m2).

The boat has 12 decks , of which 9 are passenger-accessible and 7 with cabins.

Shipboard dining options - Food and Drinks

Just as Norwegian Sky has changed since her launch, so has Freestyle Cruising. The program is simply considered as the choice to dine where you want, when you want, and take part only in those activities that interest you. Cruisers can have a good time with freestyle dining onboard Norwegian Sky and a lot of options to choose from. They can try gourmet cuisine or go to Le Bistro to taste innovative dishes. Norwegian Sky offers two main dining rooms for the passengers seeking traditional dining experience: Crossings and Palace, both very flexible. Guests can make reservations for the same time each night, or choose different times, based on their schedule. Both MDRs are open nightly for dinner. Each day, one of the two provides open-seating breakfast and lunch. Compared to the cuisine and service in the specialty restaurants, the dining rooms experience doesn't lag. Service in Crossings and Palace is better than that of bigger cruise ships.

Itineraries

Norwegian Sky itinerary program is based on 3- and 4-day short Bahamas cruises from Miami Florida . Feature port destinations include Nassau and NCL's private island Great Stirrup Cay Bahamas .

  • NCL Sky's 2017-2018 itinerary program offered 4-night voyages from Miami to Cuba with Havana overnights (May through December 2017). The itinerary also visited Great Stirrup Cay.
  • With Norwegian Sky, NCL's first-ever ship call at Havana was on May 2, 2017 (overnight). NCL Sky's Cuban cruise prices started from USD 700 per person (inclusive of unlimited drinks).
  • In 2018, NCL expanded the Cuba program to a total of 63 itineraries, most of which with Havana overnights. The season (4-day Miami roundtrips) started on March 26, 2018. The number of previously scheduled 2018 NCL Cuba cruises was 30 (through December 2017).
  • NCL's Cuban cruise program was based on two Florida-homeported liners - Norwegian Sky (from Miami) and Norwegian Sun (from Port Canaveral). Following the US Gov's June 2019-issued ban on group travel to Cuba from the USA, NCL revised all its scheduled itineraries visiting Cuban seaports. All planned departures beyond September 2 (2019) were auto-canceled. Cuba-visiting itineraries prior to September 2nd were modified to exclude Havana and visit other Caribbean ports - including in Bahamas ( Great Stirrup Cay Island , Freeport , Nassau ) and Florida ( Key West Florida ).

Due to the Coronavirus crisis, the NCL Sky ship was paused for 2 years (March 2020 thru 2022), restarting on March 2nd with 3-4-5-day roundtrips from Miami to the Bahamas.

The ship's 2023 schedule (September-October) has a mini-season based on homeporting in Baltimore MD (at Cruise Maryland Terminal). The program includes 10-11-day Canada and New England itineraries between USA and Canada ( Baltimore and Quebec City ) visiting Halifax, Bar Harbor, Shelburne Harbour, Oak Bluffs Marina, Baie-Comeau.

Norwegian Sky Wiki

Norwegian Sky is of the Sky-Class NCL liners, with sisterships NCL Sun and Costa Victoria . Vessel's construction started as an order from Costa Cruises (Costa Crociere) placed to Bremer Vulkan AG (1893-1997 / bankruptcy, a shipbuilding company, Bremen Germany) as the 2nd in a pair of Costa newbuilds . The ship name in this order was "Costa Olympia". Due to Vulkan's financial problems at that time, Costa Olympia's construction was suspended with only ~1/3 of the vessel completed. On October 5, 1996, Olympia's incomplete hull was floated out from drydock.

Costa didn't pay for the incomplete vessel, so it was laid up until December 1997, when NCL purchased it and re-designed it as "Norwegian Sky" (using the services of Tillberg Design, Sweden). NCL Sky's construction was continued at Lloyd Werft's shipyard in Bremerhaven (another major German shipbuilder) to where the hull was towed on March 8, 1998. The ship was officially acquired by NCL on July 29, 1999. The Inaugural Cruise (Maiden Voyage) was on August 9, 1999 (Norway Fjords from Dover England ), also featuring 20th century's last total solar eclipse. Ship's inaugural USA season started from homeport Boston MA to Canada-New England (Sept 18, 1999) and from homeport Miami FL to Caribbean (Nov 14, 1999).

Ship's godparents were its entire crew. The liner was christened during the August 9 cruise (1999). As "Norwegian Sky", it was operated between 1999-2004. On July 4, 2004, the vessel left drydock in San Francisco CA as "Pride of Aloha".

Pride of Aloha ship's godmother was Margaret Awamura Inouye - wife of US Senator Daniel Inouye (Hawaii). The liner operated exclusively Hawaiian Islands cruises in 2004-2008. During that period, it was US- flagged and operated by the "NCL America" brand (NCLH's subsidiary). In NCL America's fleet, Aloha was joined in 2006 by the sistership Pride of Hawaii (now Norwegian Jade).

NCL originally planned to sell the vessel to Star Cruises (GHK-owned company). Later a decision was announced to sell it to Pullmantur ( RCL-Royal Caribbean brand in Spain). In May 2008, NCL announced that the ship stays in the fleet. After being re-flagged to the Bahamas, it re-entered service as "Norwegian Sky". The second "Maiden Voyage" (now as NCL Sky) was on July 14, 2008.

In early-2009, NCL Sky was sold to GHK (Genting Hong Kong). NCL operated the vessel under one-year charter, with the options to extend the charter, but also to buy the vessel during the charter period. On June 1, 2012, NCL exercised the option and bought the ship for ~USD 260 million.

Norwegian Sky was the first ever passenger liner with an Internet Cafe (via satellite connection). At that time, this venue had 9 PC terminals for going online at sea. List of services (available 24 hours a day, at US$20 per hour or 33 cents per min) included emailing, PC games, photo imaging, Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint apps, printing. Sky is also NCL's first ever ship equipped with "Bridge Cam" (digital camera offering 24-hour real-time views from the bow / updated every 15 min).

Since January 2016, all NCL Sky passengers leaving from Miami FL enjoy free unlimited drinks (including alcohol - beers, wines, premium spirits). All onboard beverages (normally priced up to USD 11) are included in cruise fares. The list includes cocktails, premium spirits, bottled beers, draft beers, wines by the glass. Passengers 3 to 20 years of age also enjoy unlimited drinks - soda and juices. Being the oldest in the fleet, Norwegian Sky operates on short cruises (3- and 4-day Miami roundtrips) to the Bahamas - the whole year-round. The all-inclusive cruising experience includes unlimited beverages also on NCL's private island Great Stirrup Cay , which is paired in the itinerary together with Nassau .

In 2017, Sky became NCL's first liner with itineraries visiting Cuba. The Cuban cruise program (May through December 2017) offered 4-day roundtrips from PortMiami (Monday departures) with Havana overnights. The itinerary also visited NCL's private island Great Stirrup Cay . Bookings on NCL's Cuban cruises opened on February 21, 2017.

The next table shows NCL Sky's first cruise to Cuba (itinerary May 1-5) with the port times.

The 4-day roundtrip Miami cruise prices started from USD 950 pp (double occupancy inside cabin rates).

During drydock refurbishment 2017, the ship was retrofitted with new "scrubbers" (exhaust gas cleaning systems). The new scrubber technology reduces the equivalent of approx 1500 tons of the poisonous gas Sulfur Oxide. Norwegian Cruise Line was the first cruise company retrofitting with a scrubber hybrid system vessels while in service. The new in-line scrubbers (5 units) are lightweight and able to operate in a dry mode, as well as in open and closed loops.

During drydock 2019 (Jan 25 - Feb 6, done at Grand Bahama Shipyard in Freeport Bahamas ), renovations were made to the pool deck and some lounges, also the Starbucks Coffee Bar was added.

Drydock 2022 (Jan 5 - Feb 7) was conducted in France, at Damen Shiprepair Brest .

The Five Foot Traveler

The Five Foot Traveler

Reaching new heights, cruising the beautiful bahamas on the norwegian sky.

by Sarah Gallo | Jan 15, 2020 | North America , The Caribbean , USA | 0 comments

After an incredible experience on the Norwegian Encore – the newest ship on Norwegian’s Breakaway Plus Class – we decided to check out the Norwegian Sky. Newly renovated in 2019, the Norwegian Sky is a 2,000 passenger ship that sails solely between Miami and the Bahamas. The cruises range from 2 to 5 days, depending on if you would like to stop in Key West along the way. We went on the “4 Day Bahamas from Miami” Cruise not only because it hit up Grand Bahama Island, Nassau, and Great Stirrup Cay, but also because there was a Sovereign Alignment conference on board that we were eager to attend as Cheryl Young was one of the speakers (more on that later).

Where to Embark on the Norwegian Sky Cruise

The Norwegian Sky leaves from Port Miami, which is about a 20 minute Uber ride from Miami International Airport. Get the cheapest flights to Miami here.

Alternatively, if you’re already in South Florida visiting Fort Lauderdale or West Palm Beach and the surrounds , I recommend hopping on Brightline . The Brightline Station in Miami is just a few minutes away from the port. Whichever way you choose, Port Miami is easily accessible. The Norwegian Sky, and all other Miami-departing Norwegian Cruises, leave from Terminal B.

On Board the Norwegian Sky

Unlike the Norwegian Encore , the Norwegian Sky is more leisurely. You won’t find grand Broadway spectacles, race tracks, water slides, and virtual reality, but it still has some Norwegian Cruise Line staples like the Observation Lounge, Pulse Fitness Center, Sugarcane Mojito Bar (that we went to nightly), and more. There’s ample deck space to sunbathe or read, a pool, jacuzzi, basketball court, and a running track to name a few. And, of course, there’s Starbucks on board for the coffee lovers out there too.

sunset on the norwegian sky

As part of the renovation project last year, the Norwegian Sky has a new look. The cabins were refreshed, the beds are comfortable, and I’ll take a Balcony Stateroom any day. 5 FT Fun Fact: I f you’re new to cruising, pack light and bring your own hangers. As per many cruises, the cabins are small and there isn’t a lot of floor space or counter space in a Standard Balcony Stateroom so you will want to unpack and then slide your luggage under the bed and out of the way.

Since the Norwegian Sky is exclusive to the Bahamas, we hit up the following islands:

Grand Bahama Island was devastated during hurricane Dorian in September 2019. 70% of the island was flooded, thousands lost their homes, over 200 people are still missing, and the hurricane caused $3.4 billion worth of damages throughout the Bahamas. When I found out that the Norwegian Sky was stopping in Freeport on Grand Bahama Island, I was pleased to see that I’d have the opportunity to learn about the effects of the hurricane from the people that lived there, rather than the news. With the airports closed and many still living out of tents, the economy is reliant on tourist dollars to help rebuild. While the cruise line offers various excursions like swimming with sea turtles, kayaking, visiting beaches, etc., I suggest looking into other options that provide you the ability to contribute your tourist dollars directly back to the community as well. A few years back I started collecting artwork from places in which I visited, so when I disembarked I found a shop where a man was carving wooden sculptures, I knew that I found the business that I wanted to support. Devin and Charmaine Jackson of “ Jackson’s Authentic Wood Carvings and Souvenirs ” were a delight from the moment I walked into their shop. Unlike other shopkeepers, they didn’t hassle or push, they were just there getting along with their day with smiles on their faces. Through conversation, I discovered that Devin has been an artist his whole life, but has been doing wood carvings for the last 8 years.

buying souvenirs in freeport on the norwegian sky

As with most people, their business was hit hard with the hurricane and lack of tourism, but to see the joy on their faces and learn about the hopefulness of Grand Bahama Island through locals was incredibly meaningful. Slowly but surely Grand Bahama Island is rebuilding and it’s certainly worth getting off the ship, chatting with locals, and exploring the area. It’s worth noting that the Freeport cruise port unfortunately is not within walking distance to any beaches. Should you be looking for a beach escape, just grab yourself a taxi at port and let them know where you want to go; better yet, ask them to take you to their favorite beach on the island within a 30 minute drive.

Nassau is a colorful Bahamian town on the island of New Providence and – being the capital – is arguably the most famous. Best known for Atlantis, Nassau offers an array of activities for every type of traveler. I’ve been lucky to have visited Nassau a few different times (I actually shot a commercial for MSC Cruises there last year, which was pretty awesome!). If you’re looking for culture, the city tour is great — you will walk the Queen’s Staircase, check out Fort Charlotte, and wander around downtown. If you’re up for a day of excitement, you could have a look at Atlantis (personally, I’d save this for a trip in and of itself) or dive with sharks at Stuarts Cove. If you’re like me and looking for perfect private beaches, I highly recommend Balmoral Island. It’s an exclusive island that is easy to reach via ferry or speedboat, and so incredibly beautiful. Of course, if you just want to wander, you can easily walk around town from the port as well, so I urge everyone to disembark and check it out!

Great Stirrup Cay

The biggest draw to cruising on the Norwegian Sky is the day at Great Stirrup Cay, Norwegian Cruise Line’s private island. With pristine white sand beaches, crystal clear water, and a complimentary taco bar, Great Stirrup Cay boasts relaxation at its finest. If you aren’t feeling a beach day, there are plenty of excursions that you can take from Great Stirrup Cay as well from jet skiing to zip lining to parasailing, and everything in between. While we chose to relax on the beach this time around, last time we were at Great Stirrup Cay (on the Norwegian Encore ), we swam with the pigs and it was an absolute blast! I definitely recommend checking it out, as the piggies are saved from slaughter houses and brought to live out their lives on a beautiful Bahamian island. If you could swing it, I highly suggest renting a villa for the day; this provides you access to an exclusive beach, dining area, and bar, and its honestly paradise. You will find a beach swing and hammocks, and plenty of beach chairs with umbrellas on site. When we were there with the Sovereign Alignment conference, we were some of the only people on the entire beach!

girl wades into water at great stirrup cay as a day trip off the norwegian sky

Which leads me to my next point…. Could you imagine going to a conference where the backdrop looked like that! Because, yes, the conference we attended was in a villa directly on that beach! I joined this particular Norwegian Sky Cruise to hear Cheryl Young – of Smart Money Cheryl – speak. While Cheryl lives close to my hometown, who wouldn’t choose to go to a conference on a cruise versus a convention center?! Cheryl is the CFO of a multi-million dollar company and has decided to take what she’s learned through her twenty-five years of experience to help people better learn how to manage money and make money fun. Her main goal is to take her knowledge to teach everyday people like you and me how to manage money and stretch our dollars. Seems like a pretty handy skill if you ask me! She taught about the importance of implementing Facebook Ads for any type of online business. She shared with us her “Find Your Money Challenge” and we learned about the launch of her newest course: The Worry to Wealth Method. Can’t wait for its release!

Norwegian Sky Cruise Map

As I mentioned, the Norwegian Sky cruises exclusively between Miami and the Bahamas, and stops in Key West on the longer trips. Please see the map below to get an idea of the route.

Miami International Airport

Miami central station, norwegian sky terminal, what to pack for your norwegian sky cruise – travel packing list.

What you pack will depend on what time of year you visit the Bahamas. While your clothing may vary, there are 137 travel essentials that I recommend bringing on your trip. From packing essentials to tech essentials, outdoors essentials, fitness essentials, business essentials, and more… I’ve got you covered! Click here to discover the 137 travel essentials you need to check out before your next trip to the Bahamas.

Do you have Cruise Travel Insurance?

I hope you don’t embark without cruise travel insurance! If you do, you better think again. It’s particularly easy to forget to purchase travel insurance if you’re an American not only visiting Florida, but cruising out to the Caribbean. Cruise travel insurance is arguably the most important thing to have on hand (after your passports and visas). I’ve had to use my travel insurance multiple times on the road, even though I’m healthy. You never know when something might happen; take comfort in knowing that whether your flight gets cancelled or you wind up sick and in the hospital, you will be covered. I recommend World Nomads Travel Insurance for each and every one of you travelers. You can get a free quote here.

Norwegian Sky Review, 3 Night Cruise to the Bahamas

Matt Theriault

I recently had the opportunity to sail aboard the Norwegian Sky for a quick three night Bahamas sailing. It was my second time on the ship and I thoroughly enjoyed my time on board. I would like to touch on a few points that will hopefully help those of you thinking about taking the Sky in the near future. I should mention that this sailing usually has a stop at Great Stirrup Cay, but due to delayed renovations on the island we did not visit and had an extended overnight stay in Nassau.

norwegian sky bahamas cruise

The Sky is pretty limited when it comes to specialty restaurants as compared to the rest of the NCL fleet, however I think it has enough considering it is only doing 3 and 4 day sailings. On the 3 night sailing, I had dinner in the main dining room twice and Cagney’s Steakhouse once. Even though Cagney’s is now a la carte versus a fixed fee, I would still suggest visiting at least once on your voyage. The Sky also has Le Bistro which is French cuisine and Il Adagio which is Italian fare. I did not dine in either of those on this trip but I have on other NCL ships and enjoyed both.

The “All Inclusive”

The Sky is the only mass market ship to offer all-inclusive alcohol on every sailing. While most lines now have alcohol beverage packages you can purchase, the Sky’s is built into the price of your sailing. This was a great value for me and it is a major selling point for me to return to the Sky. While I expected the bars to be crazy and packed all the time, this was not the case. Instead of the usual bartenders working up and down the bar, the Sky has instituted queues or lines to ensure everyone gets served in order. They also do not require the swiping of cruise cards or signing of receipts since everyone on the ship has drinks included, this helps the line go really fast. It was a much better process than I anticipated.

View Cruises On Norwegian Sky

norwegian sky bahamas cruise

I really enjoyed the overnight in Nassau as it allowed to check out some places that you wouldn’t be able to on a normal stop during the day. I was able to visit a local night club that I have been wanting to go to for some time so I was appreciative of the opportunity even though it was a result of missing Great Stirrup Cay. We also visited some of my other favorite venue’s in Nassau including Pirate Republic Brewery and Senor Frogs.

norwegian sky bahamas cruise

Overall it was a great cruise. Being 3 days it went by in the blink of an eye, but I could do this sailing over and over again and never get tired of it. I know there are some concerns about the ship having a spring break feel since it is all-inclusive but this was not the case at all on my sailing. If you are thinking about trying the Sky I would say definitely try it and form your own opinion. If you have sailed the Sky what did you think of her? If you are sailing the Sky soon be sure to report back!

I love the Sky. It’s ideal for quick getaways. I always book the 4 day in an inside cabin. Only book balcony or suite on 7 or more day sailings. Last September paid 149 pp. What a deal! InJanuary paid 349 for the same trip. Missed Great Stirrup Cay in September due to renovations and in January because of rough waters. In spite of this I had an awesome time. On both cruises I had VIP status which afforded me the opportunity to have breakfast and lunch in Cagney’s and Le Bistro. What a nice perk. I will definitely continue to show my allegiance to NCL. Booked on the Spirit April 12TH for 12 days, round trip Venice and Celebrity in August and next January. Happy cruising.

My wife and I cruised on the Sky the weekend after Thanksgiving, 2016. The only disappointment we had was that we didn’t get to visit Great Stirrup Cay due to weather conditions. The weather seemed ok to me, but I’m sure the safety people know what they are doing. A big factor that amplified the disappointment was that the last cruise we took (January, 2016) also resulted in a missed stop to Great Stirrup Cay due to weather. In two weeks, we are scheduled to give it another try. If it doesn’t pan-out this time, I guess we’ll just handle it like we did last time, (which is to joke about whether the island actually exists or not). The Sky is nice, and the crew was great, as usual. Going forward, I think we will do minimum 5 day cruises, as 3 just seemed a little short.

Norwegian Sky Cruise to the Bahamas

Norwegian sky cruise to the bahamas overview and experience..

a beach with people and a cruise ship

Norwegian Sky Cruise to the Bahamas –

To celebrate my wife’s birthday we traveled to Miami as well as the Bahamas on a four-day cruise on Norwegian Sky from Miami to the Bahamas.

The trip includes one night in Miami as well as the four night cruise visiting Nassau, Grand Bahama and the cruise line’s private island Great Stirrup Cay.

The report will be organized in the following posts:

Miami and Bahamas Trip Report – Introduction

Miami and Bahamas Trip Report – American – MSP – MIA

Miami and Bahamas Trip Report – Hyatt Centric Miami

Miami and Bahamas Trip Report – Norwegian Sky Cruise to the Bahamas – Overview

Miami and Bahamas Trip Report – Meals on Norwegian Sky

Miami and Bahamas Trip Report – American – MIA – MSP

Miami and Bahamas Trip Report – Norwegian Sky Cruise to the Bahamas – Overview –

Norwegian Sky

My wife and I booked a four night cruise on the Norwegian Sky a couple months prior to the sailing. We booked an interior room for approximately $900. After adding in the daily service charges ($120), specialty meal plan ($120), shore excursion ($60) and airfare ($500) the total was around $1,650 or about $410 per night.

Embarkation

My wife and I arrived at the Port of Miami via UBER around 11:30 AM on Monday morning.

When we arrived there was a small level of activity at the port. There were three ships departing that day.

Our cruise was the Norwegian Sky and it was assigned to Terminal C.

Norwegian Sky

The UBER driver pulled up to the baggage drop off area and we were quickly greeted by a porter who welcomed us to Miami.

The porter assisted with our luggage and he placed our luggage tags on the bags and said that he would take care of getting the luggage on the ship. The colleague informed us that the service was complimentary however, he would appreciate a gratuity for good service. I provided the gratuity and the colleague thanked me sincerely and he invited us to head inside the terminal for check in. The colleague wished us a good cruise. I felt that he was polite and I felt he handled the request for a gratuity cordially.

We entered the terminal area and a security officer checked our passports and boarding documents before inviting us inside through security as well as for check in.

It took a couple minutes to go through the security area. The officers were polite and they checked out bags as well as had us walk through the metal detectors.

Once we exited the security area we were directed to a medium size line of other guests waiting to check in.

We joined the line and it moved quickly. We reached the front of the line within 15 minutes. We were invited up to one of the 20+ check in stations and a friendly colleague welcomed us. The colleague offered assistance and she asked for our identification card and boarding documents. After we presented them she thanked us and she processed our credit card for the onboard charges. The colleague provided a map of the ship and she informed us of the general area where our room was located. The colleague provided our room cards and said that they were used for onboard charges, for accessing the ship in the ports as well as our room key card. The colleague offered additional assistance before inviting us to the ship.

We exited the check in area and were directed to a waiting area where welcome aboard pictures were being offered as well as a large seating area. We were given a boarding number and said to take a seat and to wait until our group was called.

Norwegian Sky

The room was filled with about 100-200 other guests who were also waiting. The room was a large seating area without food or beverage options and it appeared that the restrooms were also closed.

Fortunately, the wait was only about 15 minutes. When our group was called we proceeded to the entrance area to the ship and we found another short line while guests were scanned into the ship by the security officers. The colleagues asked guests to not take pictures until we were on the ship.

Welcome On Board

We reached the front of the line and the colleague welcomed us and he asked us to have a great vacation.

We proceeded on the ship and were greeted with several friendly colleagues that welcomed us on board and they directed us to the area where the elevators were located. The colleagues informed us that our room was not ready yet; however, we could check our bags in one of the lounges and to go up on deck to have lunch or enjoy the ships facilities.

Colleagues were present promoting the ships meal options as well as the spa.

We stopped at the spa desk to inquire about specials for the day. The colleague assisted my wife with selecting a treatment and she was offered a 75-minute treatment for the price of a 50 minute one. The colleague thanked us and she invited us to relax at for my wife to arrive about 10 minutes before the treatment.

My wife and I headed up to the pool deck where we had some welcome drinks.

Norwegian Sky

All Inclusive Package

The Norwegian Sky offers all guests the beverage package which included numerous premium beverage options, beer options, a variety of wines and sodas and juices. There were some items that were not included; however, the list of covered beverages was quiet extensive and you could get everything from fancy martinis to various mixed drinks.

Bars and Pool Deck

Norwegian Sky

The bars on the pool deck were busy throughout the cruise and there were lines setup to help speed the process. The bars were setup with four pre-mixed drinks in large containers as well as four frozen drink machines. The bartenders were on hand to make all the other drinks fresh when ordered. We sampled some of the pre-mixed drinks and found them to be very sweet. In addition, the pre-made frozen drinks in the daiquiri machines also were very sweet. All of the drinks we ordered that were made fresh were poured strong with premium brands and they were presented neatly. The majority of the bars served the drinks in plastic cups; however, a few of the bars and lounges offered glassware.

On a recent NCL Cruise, the bars had some drinks pre-made as well but it seemed to be mostly the frozen ones as opposed to all those containers as I saw during the cruise in the past.

We felt that all the bar colleagues that we interacted with were friendly and polite and they seemed happy to assist us. We were surprised that no-upselling was noted. Typically, on cruises the bar staff actively promote the souvenir glasses and beverages. We did not see this happening at all. Although the souvenir glass drinks were promoted in the ships programs, they were not being emphasized by the bartenders. In addition, the gratuity was included in the all-inclusive program as well as the daily service charge, so tips were not required or expected at the bars.

At approximately 1:30 PM there was an announcement made informing all guests that the staterooms were now available.

My wife and I were assigned room 0312 which was an inside room on Deck 10. The room was a standard cruise ship room that featured two beds which were made into a single queen bed.

Norwegian Sky

We accessed the room with our keycard and found that the door worked. The room was clean and it featured the bed, a small bedside dresser, a desk with chair as well as a small chair. The room had a small closet with three drawers as well as area for hanging clothes. All of the hangers were the typed that were permanently installed in the room.

Norwegian Sky

The room had a small refrigerator that was filled with bottled water. The water had a charge and it was not included with the beverage package.

The bathroom was small with a stand up shower, toilet and a small vanity area.

Norwegian Sky

The water temperature and pressure of the shower was not very good as it was difficult to get the temperature to be comfortable and it fluctuated between hot and cold. In addition, the lower pressure made it difficult to have a comfortable shower.

The room also had a small flat screen television and there were a few movie channels as well as a few local channels in addition to the ships promotional channels.

The room felt somewhat dated; however, it was clean and kept in good condition throughout the cruise.

We were assigned a room attendant. We occasionally saw him in the hallway but he did not personally welcome us on the trip.

A couple of the evenings, he left a towel art on the bed. He also decorated the room for my wife’s birthday on one of the days during the daily service. The room attendant always seemed to know when we were out of the room because it was cleaned while we were away and we never had to wait to access the room.

Norwegian Sky

We explored the ship and discovered that it was originally the Pride of Aloha ship which was a US Flagged ship that Norwegian Based in Hawaii. The ships decorations were all Hawaiian based and some of the names of the rooms were odd now that the ship was called the Norwegian Sky. For example, the sushi restaurant was called the Plantation Club and a lounge.

The crew was present throughout the ship and they kept the public areas clean and attended to.

Public Areas

The lobby was on multiple decks with a reception desk, excursion desk as well as a few lounges and bars. Elevators were found on both sides of the open atrium area.

Norwegian Sky

The pool deck featured two pools and four small whirlpools. The whirlpools were always busy with activity; however, the pools were generally not utilized. The temperature was cooler than normal for Bahamas and Miami so that was likely why.

Norwegian Sky

The deck had chairs available near the pool. There was also another deck on the level above the pool which offered additional chairs near the windows.

Norwegian Sky

The windows by the pool were cloudy throughout most of the trip and it appeared that they could have used a more thorough cleaning as this took away from the view of the ocean.

Norwegian Sky

At the front of the ship, there was also an observation area as well as an additional whirlpool. Again the windows in this area were cloudy and that also took away from the view of the ocean. One level below there was an open air deck which offered an excellent viewing spot for sunsets as well as uninterrupted views of the ocean.

IMG_3663

The ship offered a fitness center with a variety of exercise machines as well as area for free weights as well as gym classes.

Norwegian Sky

Cruise Director and Activity Staff

The ship featured a very energetic cruise director who led activities in the day as well as the evening. He frequently was dressed in unique costumes and he was always positive and had a high level of energy as he was trying to create a fun environment for guests to relax and enjoy their vacation.

The ship offered activities each afternoon ranging from pool games to food carvings. In the evening the cruise director hosted game shows for couples as well as comedy shows and other events.

The ship featured Norwegians White Hot Party which was located on the pool deck. The deck was outfitted all in white and the cruise staff and dancers were on hand to encourage guests to have a good time. The band and DJ were excellent and they kept the dance floor packed for a couple hours during the event. The guests were given glow sticks and other lighted items for use during the event.

IMG_3662

This was a four-night Bahamas cruise that visited three ports in the Bahamas: Freeport in Grand Bahama, Nassau and Paradise Island as well as Norwegian’s Private Island, Great Stirrup Cay.

The first port was Freeport which offered a small shopping area next to the dock. In order to do anything else including visiting a beach, additional shopping or tours required a $5-$10 per-person shared taxi ride to the city center. My wife and I explored some of the shopping near the ship and then returned to relax on the pool deck and to enjoy the ships services that day.

Norwegian Sky

The second port was Nassau. My wife and I both previously visited Nassau in the past so my wife relaxed in the spa that morning while I walked around the city on my own before again returning to the ship and joining my wife for more relaxation on the pool deck.

Norwegian Sky

Before returning to the ship I sampled conch fritters which is a local street food. They were breaded well and chewy and had a good taste.

Norwegian Sky

Great Stirrup Cay

The final port was Great Stirrup Cay. This was Norwegians Private Island. The port is accessed by tender or small boats that come bring passengers from the ship to shore.

Norwegian Sky

When my wife and I were ready to depart the ship, we proceeded to one of the lounges where we were told we would need tender tickets. When we arrived there was a sign saying that no tickets were required to we proceeded to the lower level for boarding the tender. When we arrived there was a line of about 30-40 other guests. We waited for about 10 minutes before being asked to board the tender. The tender was large and it could seat 250+ guests. The boat was open air so we selected a seat on the top deck and watched the ship and the ocean while we waited for the boat to depart.

Norwegian Sky

The tender departed after about 20 minutes. There was a short ride to the island. During the voyage we were given excellent views of the ship.

Norwegian Sky

Upon arrival at the island there was a short wait while everyone departed the tender.

Once we entered the island we found it to be quite large. There were three separate large beach areas, four bars, a main restaurant that featured an Island BBQ as well as a lagoon. Plenty of beach chairs were available throughout the island.

Norwegian Sky

Norwegian sells private cabanas on the island. The cabanas looked nice; however, it seemed unnecessary as the island was so spread out.

Norwegian Sky

Norwegian extended the all-inclusive drink option to the island as all the food and beverages are served by staff from the ship. The bars were setup similar to the ones on the ship and they appeared to offer all of the same drinks including the premium brands.

Activities for purchase were available on the island including snorkeling, scuba diving, floating devices as well as parasailing and a few other tours. The cruise staff also hosted games and activities on the beach including a tug of war contest.

Norwegian Sky

My wife and I relaxed on the beach. I ended up staying on the island a little longer than my wife so I walked around the island and did some more exploring before relaxing for a little longer.

Norwegian Sky

I had lunch at the Beach BBQ and found a variety of items offered included, sandwiches, pizza, burgers, jerk chicken, hot dogs and salads as well as desserts and fruit. The food was all signed and it all looked appetizing.

Norwegian Sky

When I was ready to depart the island I proceeded to the tender area and I waited in a small line. While I was in line, I was given a cool towel by the cruise staff to relax before I was invited to board the tender. The tender filled up quickly and it departed within 20 minutes of me joining the line.

It was a short journey back and it again offered great views of the island and the ship.

Princess and Royal Caribbean also have private islands near Norwegian’s so while we were in port, you could see a Princess and Royal Caribbean ship anchored nearby.

Now Royal Caribbean has a dock so the ships do not anchor; however, Princess stills uses tenders for their ships as well as the Carnival ones that visit Princess Cays.

Norwegian Sky

Snorkeling Excursion

We elected to do snorkeling on the island and we pre-paid for the tour before the trip. When we arrived we located the pickup area and a friendly colleague asked us to sign a waiver for each guest participating before they issued the snorkeling equipment. The equipment was clean and sanitized and it appeared in good condition. No instruction on how to use the equipment was given; however, we were given a brochure about where the snorkeling spots were on the island.

We spent a few minutes getting used to the equipment before going in the water. The fins were difficult to maneuver; however, I found that it was easier to walk backwards. Once in the water we found some of the locations and I saw a couple large schools of fish as well as several. Most of the fish were hiding but when I watched for a while they came out. I also saw a few jelly fish.

I felt the snorkeling was enjoyable. There were a lot of waves that day, so that probably accounted for fewer fish sightings that day. I went a couple other times during the day before returning the equipment.

My only complaint about it was the lack of instructions on the proper way to use the equipment. It took me a little time getting used to it before I got the hang of it.

Entertainment

My wife and I did not attend any of the large production shows on the ship. They offered two shows featuring singers and dancers. There was also a comedy show one night as well as a game show the other night. We elected to explore the ship on our own rather than go to those events.

Norwegian Sky

We attended a few of the smaller couples contests while we enjoyed a drink or two at the bars. One of the contests we tried out to be a participant where Gina was asked to call out for Tarzan to come save her. I pretended to be Tarzan and I called out to her and went over and kissed her. Unfortunately, (or maybe fortunately) other guests were better at the audition than we were so we were not picked. We felt that the games were funny and they were enjoyable to watch.

Disembarkation Process

The four-night trip went by quickly and soon enough we were preparing to return to Miami. Norwegian offers luggage tags for guests and you are asked to put your bags outside the room by midnight on the last night of the cruise. They also offer the option where you can take your own bags off the ship at your leisure. My wife and I elected that option. We were informed that we could get off the ship anytime between 7:45 AM and 9:45 AM but were asked to vacate our room by 9:00 AM.

We ended up getting up around 8:00 AM and we had breakfast at the buffet before departing the room a little before 9:00 AM.

When we were ready to depart, we took the elevator down to the sixth floor and followed the signs to exit the ship. We were asked to to scan our cards one more time before several cruise staff members and officers thanked us and to invite us back next time.

Once off the ship we proceeded to the immigration and customs area. They do not offer Global Entry at the Port so we used one of the old fashion forms. There was a short line and we were through the immigration and customs interview within about 10 minutes from the time we exited the ship.

Once we were through with the process, we exited the terminal and proceeded to the waiting area where I used UBER X. A car was available within five minutes.

I will cover the dining experience on the ship in an additional post.

IMG_3660

Overall it was an excellent quick vacation to the Bahamas. We enjoyed the all inclusive option of the Norwegian Sky. We felt that the staff overall were friendly and polite and they made us feel welcome. It would have been a little nicer if the room attendant would have been more personal; however, otherwise we enjoyed the trip. We look forward to going on another cruise again in the future. The ship was older and smaller than some other ones we were on; however, the all inclusive option really set this apart from the others as it made it easier to relax while not having to worry about the pending bar bill at the end of the cruise.

Four cool things about my cruise on msc meraviglia.

' src=

I always love the little animals that cruise ships make out of the towels. It’s a cute little surprise each night when you return to your cabin. That’s cool that they helped you celebrate your wife’s birthday! Those little touches go a long way to having such a positive experience.

' src=

Yes I have been on some cruises where the room attendant does one each night. This one only did it once or twice. But it is a nice surprise finding one when you return for the night.

Best Bahamas Cruise for Couples: All Inclusive Cruise Norwegian Sky

Looking for the best bahamas cruise for couples? You have come to the right place!

We went on a trip to the Bahamas through Norwegian Cruise Line on the Norwegian Sky. It was a 4-night cruise departing from Miami . This is (as far as I’m aware) the only ship on their fleet, which is totally all inclusive (except for the specialty restaurants).

What I mean by this is that every person on board automatically gets the ‘ NCL Premium   beverage package ‘. This entitles you all drinks on board up to an $ 15 USD value. This gives you access to a wide range of drinks. While technically this doesn’t include ALL drinks, there wasn’t any drinks that we ordered that came above the $15 limit.

This cruise trip visited Nassau and Norwegian’s private Island, Grand Stirrup Cay. It also went to Grand Bahama Island but it was raining the day we pulled in & we were only interested in visiting the beach so we didn’t leave the boat that day (hence I will only comment briefly on this port).

I have thought of some questions that I would have like answered prior to sailing on this cruise, so here’s our review of the Norwegian Sky bahamas cruise and why we think it is the best bahamas cruise for couples on the market!

Best Bahamas Cruise for Couples: All Inclusive Cruise on the Norwegian Sky

Which room to choose.

As we are travelling on a budget, we chose the cheapest room on offer on the Norwegian Sky which gave us an inside room located on deck 4.

For this category we paid $250 USD pp. plus taxes & gratuities. Once you add in these additional expenses, the cost probably totals around $220 USD per room per night. While this was definitely a splurge for us on our budget trip, the cruise was worth every penny as it exceeded our expectations.

One way you can easily monitor for cost of cruises to ensure that you get the best possible price is to regularly check Cruise Direct. On the site, you can compare all cruise lines by price in the time you wish to cruise. Be careful if you are not an American citizen though as certain offers on cruise direct are only applicable to American citizens.

The room we choose (Guaranteed Inside Category IX) was pretty small but it was generally clean & comfortable. It had a double bed & a small couch.

With two full sized suitcases open, we pretty much couldn’t move in this room. However, an older couple we met later on the cruise told us that there was room under the bed designated for the suitcases (wish we had of discovered this earlier!).

For our purposes & budget, the room worked well. Both my parents & grandparents have booked balcony rooms on other Norwegian cruises and raved about them. If these rooms are within an $100.00 USD price difference per person, I would recommend splurging as, from what I’ve been told, they are far bigger & more comfortable.

Cable Beach, Bahamas

Ports we visited and what we did

As we were travelling on a budget & we were visiting beach locations, we decided not to participate in any shore excursions. We looked through the list of shore excursions on the boat & none particularly interested us & most were over $100 USD pp. On this particular cruise, not booking shore excursions turned out to be a smart decision.

Norwegian’s Private Island, Grand Stirrup Cay

This was a really fantastic day & our favourite part of the Bahamas. As this is a private island owned Norwegian cruise line, only Norwegian cruise lines are able to access this island

Grand Stirrup Cay is a really beautiful island which has crystal clear blue water & white sand. From directly off the beach you are able to snorkel and see lots of colourful fish.

The biggest mistake we made was not buying a snorkel set prior to boarding the boat. We paid $30 USD pp to hire snorkel equipment for a few hours, the same price that it would have cost us to purchase our own equipment in Miami prior to departure.

Another major plus of this island was (as it was Norwegian’s private island) all the food & drink on the island was included & you didn’t have to purchase anything additional.

For lunch, the cruise line put on quite an extensive buffet. There were also deck chairs that you could use for free & Norwegian entertained their cruisers with free games & activities on the island throughout the day. You really don’t need to purchase a shore excursion on this day & in my opinion you would be missing out if you did.

Best Bahamas Cruise for Couples

Nassau, Bahamas

We also had a great day in Nassau in the Bahamas. When we existed the boat we were swarmed by locals trying to hire rental cars & scooters.

They indicated that you needed some form of transportation to access the Island’s beaches. We considered hiring a scooter however, we thought we would go for a walk first to check out the local area.

This was a smart decision as it was only approximately a 15 minute walk to a beautiful beach (located next to Fat Tuesday beach club). It was great to get a ‘local feel’ by seeing locals also using the beach.

You can access Wifi in the Fat Tuesday beach club or in McDonalds in Nassau city centre. We spent the entire day sitting in a shaded part of this beach, reading & swimming in the water.

Grand Bahama Island, Bahamas

As indicated previously, we didn’t leave the boat on this day as it was raining. We spent the day eating & drinking on the boat. However, we did hear the beach was a long way away (45 minutes by car I believe).

Therefore, if you are inclined to buy only one shore excursion, this might be the place to do so.

Food and entertainment onboard

The food on board was plentiful to say the least! We felt like there was a never ending supply of board and left the ship feeling very fat. Without paying an additional fee, there were three free restaurants on the boat:

Garden Buffet

Garden Buffet was the main buffet on board the ship which served breakfast, lunch & dinner. It was pretty much open for all day snacking & shut about 12pm at night (just enough time for a late night snack after the onboard nightly entertainment).

The buffet had a wide range of different food on it. Like most buffets, I wouldn’t rate the quality of food on the buffet as sensational however, it certainly was plentiful & had a large range of variety.

Palace & Crossing Restaurants

The other two included restaurants onboard the ship were Palace & Crossings. These two restaurants served exactly the same food each night. The only real difference in the restaurants was the decor. I would suggest going to the restaurant with greater availability.

The food served at these restaurants was very nice & changed on a nightly basis. One thing that we didn’t realise at the time was that you can order as many main meals & entrees that you like. A couple of die hard cruisers told us this on our last night & safe to say we went crazy & had a bit of everything that night.

Entertainment

We were also satisfied with the entertainment. We thought the dancers were of an exceptional quality so we would recommend going to the shows if you are up for it.

Getting to Miami Cruise Terminal

Car rental from miami cruise port.

We hired a rental car from Miami . If your car rental company (e.g. this is the case for Sixt) end downtown it is a fair walk from the cruise terminal.

There is no public transport between these points so we decided to walk to the cruise terminal. If you don’t have a lot of luggage, this might be possible. However, this was extremely difficult with our two suitcases & not advisable.

Try to get your car rental to end at the actual cruise terminal if possible.

bahia-honda-things-to-do

To Miami Airport upon disembarking the cruise

Norwegian cruise line offers a paid shuttle from the cruise terminal that drops you directly at the airport. This shuttle can be purchased upon leaving the ship.

3 Tips for a Couples Bahamas Cruise

  • Check in early!! When checking in, you choose your embarkment time. We paid the mistake of checking into our cruise only a few days before sailing.
  • Buy a snorkel set before departing on the cruise.
  • If your cruise happens to decrease in price 30 days or more prior to departure, Norwegian cruise line have a policy that, if you call, you will get upgraded to the next category of accomodation (e.g. interior room to exterior room) IF the exterior room is the same price or less than what you paid.

We really like traveling on Norwegian cruises and we think it is definitely one of the best cruise ships for couples to the Bahamas. If you have sailed to the Bahamas on a honeymoon or otherwise on a different ship and prefer it, we’d love to know – leave us a comment below!

If you're looking for short cruises that pack a lot of good times into a weekend vacation, you should know that many cruise lines offer these trips, including Norwegian Cruise Line, MSC Cruises, Royal Caribbean International and Celebrity Cruises.
