Great journey to creamfields and back, top bloke graham is

Amazing service from Graham! First time using this company and I would definitely use again! Very helpful packing all of our stuff on to the van and happily willing to stop when we needed a break. I Would definitely recommend!

Exellent service. Took 14 adults with luggage to Creamfields. The driver Graham even stopped off to drop a few of us on route. Very punctual and very accomodating. Graham let us play our own music and stopped for breakfast on the return trip. will definitly use this service again.

Fantastic service! Would highly recommend! Made our journey up to creamfields and back top notch!

Booked mini bus for 14 people for Saturday 17th November, it arrived to take us to our destination and to pick us up to take us home on time. The mini bus was spotless and the driver (a lady) was very friendly and helpful. Highly recommended.

"TravelSafe have been great from start to finish. We booked for a hen party to take 13 of us from Liverpool to York and back again. Booking was straightforward and they were really helpful when I had to make a couple of adjustments to the booking afterwards. Communication was spot on, I got quick responses to any messages I sent. Phil and Mike, our drivers, were brilliant. They were easy going and were happy to stop when we needed them to for the all important loo break. They also gave us a hand getting luggage on and off which was a great help. The minibus was very clean and comfortable with more than enough room for all of us. I will definitely book with TravelSafe again in the future, thanks so much for an overall great experience."

"We booked the luxury bus (with leather seats, tables etc) but the confirmation did note that we may not be allocated that vehicle - sure enough we weren’t! However, the bus that arrived was clean and comfortable and suited our needs. The driver was prompt and helpful loading bags etc. He was very friendly and accommodating; couldn't ask for more. We will definitely use Travelsafe again"

CLIMBING ROUTE:  Marble Mountain Sno-Park, Winter Route, aka "Worm Flows."     Avalanche risk:  ORANGE , CONSIDERABLE, 3,000 - 8,000 feet (914 - 2,430m).  FR-83 (access road) is plowed/dry pavement to Marble Mountain Sno-park.    Expect deep soft snow in the woods with a compact ski and boot trail.  Expect 2 - 4 feet (1.2m) of soft snow from trees to seismograph station (5,800 ft, 1,767 m).  Slab avalanches and glide cracks observed along the route.  A snow wall at the junction of Monitor Ridge has pushed the route to the North (right ascending).  Extensive fragile cornice on the rim with at least a 15 ft (3 m) overhang.  Stay back 30 ft (9 m) from the rim.  Ski and glissade conditions ideal as the afternoon sun softens the snow.

June Lake snotel reads 88 inches (7.3 ft, 2.2 m) snow at elevation 3,440 ft (1,048 m).

In general, expect heavy rains, snow, meltwater, ice, periods of dense fog, mixed precipitation, sub-freezing temperatures and moderate to high winds.  Know the forecast at all elevations before your climb, have cold/wet weather layers and redundant navigational aides (map, compass and GPS) for low-visibility conditions.   Due to snow and ice accumulation at all elevations, the route may not be well defined.  Always keep the wood pole cairns (trail markers) in sight as you climb.

More information:

PERMITTING:  Refer to the recreation and permitting site for current permit dates, prices and limitations.

Route finding:   Recommend preloading offline maps of the "Worm Flows, Winter Route" into your device and have a paper map and compass backup.   Route finding above tree line can be very challenging on days with reduced visibility, frequent winds, precipitation, fog, whiteouts, etc.  Above tree line beginning the ascent, follow the route marked by wooden poles.  As gullies melt out, more boot trails will be exposed.

Leave No Trace:  Climbers are required to utilize blue bags to pack out all human or pet waste, including toilet paper.

Camping:  There is dispersed camping and pit toilets available at the trailhead, but no running water, and bathroom services may be limited so please bring your own toilet paper, soap, water, or hand sanitizer. Please plan accordingly.

Don't trust these cowboys. They failed to pick us up from Manchester Airport after taking the money in advance. They owe my pensioner Mother £70 that they've promised to repay now for the last two months and each time have failed to turn up with the money - they are nothing more than highway robbers and will leave you high and dry with no transport like they did with us!

The All You Need Mount St. Helens Visitor Guide

LAST UPDATED: 2/4/24 – Mount St. Helens Visitor Guide

When Mount Saint Helens in Washington erupted on May 18, 1980, the eruption killed 57 people and sent volcanic ash as far as the East Coast of the United States.  That eruption left a lasting impression on the mountain as it left a horseshoe-shaped crater when the eruption blasted away part of the mountain.  Today, the mountain is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the Northwestern United States, drawing people from all over the world to see the mountain that once shook the United States.

Situated roughly 50 miles Northeast of Portland, Oregon, and roughly 96 miles South of Seattle, Washington as the crow flies, Mount Saint Helens is located in a beautiful part of America’s Pacific Northwest that has an abundance of tourist attractions.  Visitors to the Mount Saint Helens National Volcanic Monument can learn about the 1980 eruption that left such a lasting impact on the surrounding landscape, hike in some of the most beautiful and serene landscapes, and marvel at the power of Mother Nature.

Mount St Helens

An All You Need Mount St. Helens Guide

In this Mount St. Helens visitor guide, I am going to give you all of the information that you need to plan a successful trip to Mount Saint Helens National Volcanic Monument.  I am going to let you know the best ways to get there, outline the best times to plan your visit, and then give you some recommendations on where to stay when you visit.  I will also give you some recommendations on where to get some of the best pictures of the mountain in the area, provide you with some recommended hiking paths, as well as provide you with some additional sightseeing ideas for your trip.

Mount St. Helens Guide Navigation Menu

How to get to mount st. helens.

Mount St Helens

Mount Saint Helens is located in the Southern part of the state of Washington in the United States, near the border with the state of Oregon.  In fact, Mount Saint Helens is actually closer to the city of Portland in Oregon than it is to Seattle, Washington.  To give you a general sense of where it is located, I have provided an area map for you to review in my Mount St. Helens visitor guide below.

Mount St. Helens is Close to Both Seattle and Portland

Situated between the cities of Seattle and Portland in the Pacific Northwest, Mount Saint Helens is close to many other popular tourist attractions in the area.  To give you a sense of how far Mount Saint Helens is from other attractions in the area, I have included a table below that outlines some of those distances and drive times.

There are three primary ways that you can approach Mount Saint Helens National Volcanic Monument to view the mountain.  From the West, visitors can stop at Johnston Ridge to get some fantastic views of the mountain from the North, as well as make a stop in the interactive visitor center to learn about the mountain’s eruptions.

In the East, visitors can stop at Windy Ridge viewpoint to get a different perspective of the mountain and hike on some of the area’s most scenic trails.  Finally, in the South of the mountain viewers can hike through Lava Canyon, visit the Ape Caves, or attempt a summit of the mountain.

Best Time to Visit Mount St. Helens

Mount St Helens

To assist you in determining the best time for you to plan your trip, I have included some information on average temperature, average precipitation levels, and the average number of visitors for you to review below.

Temperature (°F)

Because Mount Saint Helens is at a relatively high elevation, the weather near the mountain can be rather unpredictable.  In the winter, temperatures near the mountain can be quite chilly and even fall well below freezing.  In the summer, the high elevation keeps the temperatures from getting too warm.  Even in the summer months, nighttime temperatures can be quite cool.

Precipitation (Inches)

If you would like to avoid freezing rain or snow, then I would recommend avoiding the winter months of November through March.  This is the wettest time of year around Mount Saint Helens, with the wettest month being December.  During the summer months of June through September, the area sees the lowest amount of precipitation of the year.

Average Visitors

According to Google Trends, the time of year when people are most interested in Mount Saint Helens is during the Spring months.  This makes sense as the spring and summer months have the best weather.  If you are looking to avoid crowds when you visit, your best bet would probably be early autumn.  You should still have decent weather, but the crowds will be much thinner.

NOTE:  The chart below is from Google Trends and shows the relative amount of Google searches for Mount Saint Helens by tourists throughout the year. The numbers are calculated relative to the peak month, which is mid-May. For instance, September 16th saw roughly 60% of the searches for “Mount Saint Helens” as May 13th, which was the peak day.

Where to Stay Near Mount St. Helens

Unless you are looking to camp out, there aren’t a lot of options for lodging right by Mount Saint Helens.  However, there are quite a few lodging options within an hour’s drive of the monument.  To assist you in locating a place to stay during your travels, I have included a list of recommended hotels at different price points in my Mount St. Helens visitor guide below.

Campgrounds Nearby

If you would like to save some extra money, there are also several quality campgrounds and RV parks in the area that you can stay at.  To give you an idea of what is available, I have included a list of recommendations below for you to review.

Another thing that Mount Saint Helens National Volcanic Monument has in abundance is great hiking trails.  There are a number of great trails in both the East, West, and South of the national monument.  If you are looking for a good hiking trail in the area, I have outlined a half dozen trails that I recommend below.

Popular Mount St. Helens Tours

Mount St Helens

If you are looking to add some extra adventure to your trip, several really great tours are available in the Mount Saint Helens area.  I have included a list of the highest-rated tours and activities below for you to review should you want to book something for your trip.

The Ape Caves

Ape Caves

If you are on the south side of the mountain, one of the most unique features that you can tour is the Ape Caves.  These lava tunnels are surreal and absolutely worthwhile to tour if you have the time.  There is no better way to get a first-hand look at how this volcano works than exploring the mountain’s lava tunnels.

Where to Photograph Mount St. Helens

Mount St Helens Photography Locations Johnston Ridge

There are some absolutely fantastic pictures that you can get on the West side of the mountain.  Not only does the Johnston Ridge viewpoint have some good spots to take photos, but you can get some really good shots of the area where the eruption blast devastated as well.

Mount St Helens Photography Locations Windy Ridge

If you are up for doing some hiking then the East side of the mountain is my favorite side for getting shots.  The path takes you into the valley right in front of the mountain and you can get some absolutely gorgeous shots of Mount Saint Helens.

PRO TIP :   Doing research on a location is one of the best things you can do to increase the quality of your travel photographs.  For some tips on how to do some pre-trip scouting for photo opportunities, check out my article on The Art of Travel Photography – Planning Your Shots.  In this article, I review the process that I use to do pre-trip photography planning to give you photography location tips like the ones you see above.

Other Things to See in the Area

Thank you so much for the kind words, and for reading! 😀

Visiting Mount Saint Helens is on my list to do this summer, since we are so close (Seattle area)!

You are close! Seattle is such a beautiful city. I love the Northwest 😀👍

There is no shortage of activities to get into up here, that’s for sure.

Indeed! Olympic NP is my favorite.

' src=

Put this on my bucket list!

You will love it!! 😀

' src=

There is so much to see and do in the Pacific NW. I have to get back there. Excellent post!

Thank you so much!!! It is one of my favorite areas. So beautiful.

' src=

I totally agree with you on researching before visiting tour sites. Asides helping you find good camera angles, you could earn a lot of knowledge regarding the place and not appear so much as a “newbie”

Exactly!!! Thanks so much for reading!! 😀👍

This is fantastic. We did the helicopter tour when I was a teenager, and it was so incredible that I still remember it now, 25 years after the fact.

Thanks Scott!! I really appreciate it! The helicopter ride must have been amazing!!

It was! It was worth whatever my parents paid for it, that’s for certain!

' src=

Another great post! I made the mistake of visiting Ape Caves during a snowy November when there weren’t many people around the park. I checked it out by myself with a pretty weak flashlight and felt the darkness surround me. It was very eerie, but an excellent trip nonetheless!

Thank you for the kind words! That would be so spooky to visit during the winter.

What an awesome Mount St. Helens visitor guide! I just blogged today about our trip (last fall) to the East side of the park. I somehow missed this post of yours until today, but it’s so good that I just added a link to it in my post. Also, after reading your guide I know that I must see the south and west sides of the park one day as well!

Awesome!! I am definitely going to check out your post! I appreciate the kind words 😀👍

Not to worry--the volcanic activity just makes Mt. St. Helens more interesting and as a previous poster noted, the Park Service will close the Visitor Centers if there might be any real danger. Be sure to drive all the way up to the Johnston Ridge visitor center and take in the presentation in the theater!!

Our favorite visitor center is Weyerhaeuser Learning Center. Stop at all the Visitor Centers along Hiway 504, each one offers something different. We live about 60 miles west of the mountain and drive up there at least a couple of time during the summer. It's fun to watch the changes. We watched the ash move east when it first erupted in May 1980, then had it come down on us the next weekend like wet cement because it was raining.

Thanks so much for the replies!

Forest Service manages Mt St Helens and right they will close, if any risk. USGS is heavily involved in those choices. And local news does good job of covering that.

Our son and family came down from McChord AFB this week, and chose not to go up to Johnston Ridge because of cloud cover, and good choice on their part. Long trip to look at clouds. So you want to be sure. you will be able to see.

Son just returned to NW after many years elsewhere, and he has not yet been to Johnston Ridge. His wife and boys have. He was pretty dissapointed.

How to Visit Mt St Helens in One Day or Two

travel safe st helens

Mount St Helens is a volcano in southern Washington State. The mountain is an awe-inspiring spectacle—a volcanic temple to the power of mother nature. Even 40 years on from its headline-making eruption, the evidence of its explosive is clear. This is a day trip or weekender not to be missed. Visit Mount St Helens National Volcanic Monument with this itinerary and guide.

Table of contents

Mount st helens fast facts, is mount st helens worth visiting, what is the best time to visit mount st helens, getting to mt st helens national volcanic monument, how long do you need to visit mount st helens, how much does it cost to visit mt st helens, general mount st helens visitor tips.

  • Mount St Helens is not a National Park, it is a National Monument established by US Congress in 1982.
  • The volcano is known by the Native American names Loowit or Louwala-Clough , which translate to “smoking mountain”.
  • Captain George Vancouver of the British Royal Navy dubbed the volcano Mt St Helens in 1792. It’s namesake is Alleyne Fitzherbert, the Baron St Helens who served as the British Ambassador to Spain.
  • Mount St Helens’ last major eruption was on Sunday May 18, 1980. It began with an earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale, followed by the collapse of the north face of the mountain. The collapse released pressurized gases in the volcano triggering a lateral explosion which decimated nearly 38,850 hectares (150 square miles) of the surrounding landscape.
  • The area around Mt St Helens had been mostly evacuated prior to the eruption, however 57 people were killed. Three of these people were within the “red zone”: a scientist, a photojournalist and a stubborn resident who wouldn’t leave.
  • Mt St Helens lost about 2.6 cubic kilometres (0.63 cubic mile) of its volume in the eruption and which reduced its height about 396m (1300ft).

Volcanic activity continued until 1986 until the mountain settled down again.

In a word, yes! If seeing an active volcano in person excites you, then you will get a kick out of visiting Mt St Helens.  It is incredible (and a little scary) to see the destruction wreaked by the 1980 eruption and that even after 40 years it is still so evident on the landscape. Plus, I think of it as a chance to preview what nearby Mt Rainier might look like in the future.

The main road accessing Mount St Helens is State Route 504 (aka Spirit Lake Memorial Highway). The upper part of this road is generally open May to October, making summer and early autumn the best times to visit Mt St Helens. Check with the Forest Service for specific conditions. Summer brings beautiful wildflower blooms, however, note that Mt St Helens National Volcanic Monument has no shade. Early autumn is a little cooler for those who don’t like to be out in the intense summer heat.

The two closest airports to Mount St Helens are Seattle-Tacoma International (SEA) and Portland International (PDX).

From there, the best way to get to the volcano is by car. Here are some rough distances and drive times from the major metro areas to Johnston Observatory:

From Seattle, WA – Approximately 260km (160mi)/ 3.5 hours drive

From Tacoma, WA – Approximately 210km (130mi)/ 2.5 hours drive

From Olympia, WA – Approximately 155km (95mi)/ 1.75 hours drive

From Portland, OR – Approximately 180km (110mi)/ 2.25 hours drive

Silver Lake with clouds shrouding Mt St Helens in the distance

To visit Mt St Helens in a day trip, you really don’t want to be starting out further away than Olympia, WA or Portland, OR.

It is possible to day trip from Tacoma or Seattle, WA but it would be an awfully long day with a huge proportion spent in the car. If you plan to day trip from Seattle, it would be best to invite some friends that you trust to share the driving duties.

With two days, Mt St Helens is a more comfortable trip from Seattle and you can see both the north/west and south/east side of the mountain.

If you can afford three days or a long weekend, you can see Mt St Helens from all sides and tie in a day trip to Mount Rainier National Park as well!

Entry fees and passes for Mt St Helens National Volcanic Monument are stupidly complicated, so I’ll try to break it down for you the best I can.

The U.S. Forest Service manages the Monument. They charge per-person entry fees to access the Coldwater or Johnson Ridge areas on the west side of the volcano. The cost is $8 per person for adults (kids under 16 are free).

If you also intend to visit the eastern and southern sides of Mt St Helens, you will need to pay $5 per vehicle, per day for a National Forest Day Pass (or $30 for an annual pass) .  Passes are available for purchase at Forest Service offices and self-serve kiosks around the Monument. The Volcanic Monument also honours the America the Beautiful pass and Senior passes for the named pass owner and 3 additional adults. If you have a Northwest Forest Pass (Oregon and Washington), this will allow one person to enter.

Mount St Helens one and two day itinerary

Start early, especially if you are driving 2-3 hours to get to the Park rather than overnighting nearby. We drove to Castle Rock on a Friday night after work, to get a head start on the following day. Castle Rock is the closest town with descent amenities including hotels, restaurants and supermarket where you can pick up supplies.

Take State Route 504 off the I-5. Your first stop will be about 10 mins away from the exit, at the Mt St Helens Visitor Center. Though the Visitor Center has been closed during the pandemic, it is still worth a brief stop to stretch your legs on the short interpretative trail which includes a boardwalk along Silver Lake.

About 15-20 minutes further along State Route 504, look for the Bigfoot statue that marks the North Fork Survivors Gift Shop. There you will find an A-frame home that was partially buried by the mudslides resulting from the eruption.

Back on the road, your next stop is Bridge View Point. This spot overlooks Hoffstadt Bridge, the longest and tallest of the fourteen bridges along the Spirit Lake Memorial Highway (SR-504). Here, you’ll also begin to comprehend the extent of the area affected by the 1980 eruption of Mt St Helens, as you stand on the edge of the Blast Zone.

Next stop on our itinerary is the Mount St Helens Forest Learning Center. Even if you don’t intend to visit the Center, make a quick stop here for some photos. The Learning Center overlooks the valley through which the deadly mud and debris slide tore moments after the eruption.

A smidgen further up the road at the Mile 37 marker, you will find Elk Rock Viewpoint. This marks the western entrance to Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument with views to the crater, the Toutle River Valley and on clear days, the snowy peak of Mount Adams.

Finally, we arrive at Johnston Ridge Observatory. The Ridge and Observatory are named for USGS volcanologist David A. Johnston , who was monitoring Mt St Helens at a nearby observation post on the morning of the eruption and who died in the blast. Here you’ll have direct views into the horseshoe-shaped crater of the volcano which is partially filled by a lava dome and glacier. While you are here, take a short hike on the paved Eruption Trail (approx. 800m/0.5mi) for more astounding views and gorgeous, summer, wildflower blooms.

Return to your place of origin or go drive to your accommodation for the night and continue with day two. Again, Castle Rock is a good place to spend the evening.

View of Mt St Helens crater from Johnson Ridge

Make your way to the east side of the volcano via WA-503 and stop the Trial of Two Forests trailhead. Wander along the boardwalks of this easy and accessible 0.4km (0.25mi) loop trail. Here, two forests meet. The old-growth forest is composed of Douglas firs and western red cedars. The younger forest, which was destroyed by lava flows from Mt St Helens 2000 years ago, is made up of fir and hemlock. There are imprints of trees in lava beds and a lava cast you can climb into (again, have your flashlight at the ready).

Next stop: Ape Cave. The cave is a lava tube formed over 2000 years ago! You’ll need a flashlight to explore either of the two routes departing from the visitors’ center near the main entrance. The lower trail is about 2.5km/1.5mi return on this easy, out-and-back hike.

The upper trail is about double the distance with half the hike taking you through the cave and a return trail above ground. Among other obstacles, the upper trail requires you to scale a slippery 8ft lava wall with limited footholds. This is one for the adult adventurers!

After Ape Cave, get a contrasting view of Mt St Helens, by making your way to Lahar Viewpoint. Here you’ll see how different the recovery of the landscape has been compared to the crater side.

At this point, it’s time to turn homeward.

  • Start early, especially if you are driving 1-2 hours to get to the Monument.
  • Always check Park conditions and closures before setting out.
  • Make sure you have plenty of sun protection.
  • Pack lots of food and water. There are extremely few food outlets once you leave the I-5, so pack lunch, snacks and lots of water.

Remember to take only photos and leave only footprints as you enjoy your visit to Mount St Helens.

Peace, love & inspiring travel,

Can You Drive to the Mount St. Helens Crater?

By: Author The Drivin' & Vibin' Team

Posted on June 26, 2023

When Mount St. Helens erupted in 1980, it released as much energy as 25,000 atomic bombs.

The disastrous explosion devastated the immediate area. Over 230 square miles of land felt the effects, and 57 people died.

Forty-three years later, this event remains one of U.S. history’s most drastic natural disasters. But the affected land continues to heal, and you can see the progress for yourself.

Let’s check it out!

About Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument

Mount St. Helens erupted early on Sunday, May 18, 1980. An earthquake sheared off part of the mountain’s face, causing a massive avalanche. The movement of so much rock and ice changed the pressure within the volcano. As the gases inside shifted, they caused a giant eruption lasting nine hours.

The catastrophe drastically changed the land, wildlife, and vegetation in its path. The surrounding area wasn’t a dense forest anymore but a flat, colorless zone filled with ash. President Reagan worked with the U.S. Congress to transform the location into a monument in response to the disaster. The Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument officially opened in 1982.

This protected area is a haven for hikers, nature lovers, and general visitors. It stands to educate the public on the history of the Mount St. Helens disaster. It’s also a valuable research site. Rather than restoring the land after the eruption, we let it evolve naturally without human influence.

Where Is Mount St. Helens?

Mount St. Helens sits mid-way through the Cascade Mountains. At more than 14,000 feet, it’s the highest peak. The range runs for about 700 miles from northern California into southern Canada. They’re part of the Ring of Fire, an extended system of volcanoes formed over thousands of years.

Mount St. Helens isn’t the only volcano in the Cascades. Twelve other volcanic peaks populate this range. Before 1980, the most recent eruption was from Lassen Peak near Redding, California. Lassen experienced a series of explosions lasting five years, from 1914 to 1921. One was severe enough to destroy the surrounding areas.

What Is the Best Scenic Drive for Mount St. Helens?

If you want to see the majesty of Mount St. Helens yourself, you’ll need to drive there. It just so happens there’s a scenic route in Washington state that takes you straight to the national monument.

SR-504, also known as the Spirit Lake Memorial Highway, is the only highway in the U.S. giving access to the former blast zone of a volcano. This 52-mile highway begins in Castle Rock, Washington, and ends at the Johnston Ridge Observatory, near the famous St. Helens crater.

There’s plenty to see and do along the Spirit Lake Memorial Highway. You can stop in the Kelso-Longview area, which boasts playgrounds, parks, and seasonal festivals. Lake Sacajawea Park is another beautiful stopping point, with scenic views and a human-made lake.

Best Hikes Near Mount St. Helens

Mount St. Helens is a unique landmark with a fascinating history. But the best way to experience this area is to see it up close. Here are a couple of great hikes near the famous volcanic mountain.

Hummocks Trail

To really get a feel for the effects of the Mount St. Helens eruption, check out Hummocks Trail in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest. Hummocks are chunks of rock and earth that fell when the mountain’s north face collapsed, and you can see them on this trail. You’ll literally be walking through history.

Hummocks Trail is a somewhat challenging loop that’s about 2.5 miles long. The route is popular, so you’re likely to encounter others. During winter, this area experiences icy conditions that make driving difficult. Bikes and pets are prohibited, so leave them at home.

Harry’s Ridge Trail

Harry’s Ridge takes its name from Harry Randall Truman, a resident of Spirit Lake near Mount St. Helens. Truman refused to evacuate his home before the 1980 eruption and ultimately perished.

Left alone by humans since the blast, this trail is beautiful and full of life. Enjoy snowy views during the winter and flowers, berries, and green forests during the summer.

Harry’s Ridge Trail is 8.5 miles out-and-back. It’s a somewhat challenging route and takes just over four hours to complete. Harry’s Ridge is another popular area where you’ll probably encounter others. Visit this trail between June and November to avoid unfavorable weather conditions.

Is St. Helena Island Safe? Crime Rates & Safety Report

St. Helena Island, United States

South Carolina : Safety by City

  • Hilton Head Island
  • Mount Pleasant
  • Myrtle Beach
  • Pawleys Island
  • St. Helena Island
  • Sullivan’s Island
  • Summerville
  • Travelers Rest
  • West Columbia

St. Helena Island, located in Beaufort County, South Carolina, lies within the Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor.

Historically, it served as a significant center for Gullah Geechee culture, with roots tracing back to enslaved Africans who worked on plantations.

The island’s culture is deeply rooted in West African traditions, evident in its language, cuisine, and craft skills.

Today, visitors can explore historic sites such as the Penn Center, one of the country’s first schools for freed slaves, and the Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Center.

Thanks to its cultural preservation, St. Helena Island offers a more authentic and immersive cultural experience than other nearby islands.

Additionally, the island’s slower pace and untouched natural beauty make it an ideal retreat for those seeking a peaceful and enriching getaway.

Make no mistake; however, it’s beautiful with Spanish moss trees and waterways, but it’s a primitive experience surrounded by nature, which means bugs, snakes, and alligators in this section of the state.

You also get the bonus of being close to Beaufort and the outer islands, including Hunting Island State Park, with a beach and lighthouse.

Don’t miss the chance to see Boneyard Beach here, especially at sunrise.

The drowned forest isolated from the mainland is truly a unique experience.

With its rich history, vibrant culture, and tranquil surroundings, St. Helena Island stands out as a compelling destination in the Lowcountry of South Carolina.

  • Warnings & Dangers in St. Helena Island

OVERALL RISK: LOW

There's a low risk here, but there are definitely some things you need to know before choosing this as your destination in the Lowcountry. This is more remote and rural, making a great escape from the crowds.

TRANSPORT & TAXIS RISK: LOW

Taxis, rideshares, and rental cars are your best options to get around, but that rental car will be your best bet. The Visit Beaufort website has a list of transportation options, but you're going to find limited options on this island.

PICKPOCKETS RISK: LOW

The risk here is low, with an average of three pickpockets or purse snatchings happening each year, looking back at five years of crime data. However, all personal safety steps apply as this is a big tourist destination, and you shouldn't let your guard down.

NATURAL DISASTERS RISK: MEDIUM

You must treat this one as a medium risk with the risk of storms and flooding, plus the enhanced risk of hurricanes between June and November. If you don't have mobile service where you're staying, get a NOAA weather radio powered by batteries.

MUGGING RISK: LOW

This is a low risk, with the robbery rate being 70% lower than the national average. That's on top of the 57% decline over the past decade. Even among the robberies that happen, 63% are in private homes.

TERRORISM RISK: LOW

This is another low risk since it's a coastal island of a small town. The biggest threats to St Helena Island are climate change and sea level rise, on top of hurricane dangers.

SCAMS RISK: LOW

The Beaufort County Sheriff's Office has a list of common scams on its website, plus a phone number to call if you want to talk with a deputy about those risks. You shouldn't have an issue with scams here, but always verify you're renting from a legitimate renter.

WOMEN TRAVELERS RISK: LOW

Women experience the same risks and rewards as anyone else visiting here. It will be helpful to understand the culture and customs of the Lowcountry before visiting so you don't breach etiquette.

TAP WATER RISK: LOW

I research this topic all the time, and I love that the water utility here has the 2023 Water Quality Report out three months ahead of the required date. I don't see that often! The report shows full compliance and no violations. However, the bigger concern would be if you visit during or after a flood, when tap water sources can be contaminated. You'll get public safety alerts should that happen.

  • Safest Places to Visit in St. Helena Island

Learn about the city and St. Helena Island on the Beaufortsc.org website.

There’s a whole section dedicated to this island.

Nearby islands you’ll want to research include Hunting Island, Fripp Island, Pritchards Island, and Lady’s Island.

One must-visit site is the Penn Center, one of the nation’s earliest schools for freed African Americans.

Today, it offers exhibits and educational programs.

This should be your first stop to understand the culture of the people you’ll meet.

It’s part of the Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor, which has 17 stops along the coast of South Carolina and goes from North Carolina to Florida.

The Brick Baptist Church is a historical landmark as the first church on the island.

Services are still held here, and you are welcome to attend, provided you respect their religious beliefs.

The St. Helena Island’s Chapel of Ease stands in ruins, eroding slightly more each passing year since the 1860s.

The vibe here is serene, but some have reported hearing or seeing ghosts at this sacred site.

It’s surrounded by Spanish moss dripping from trees and makes a great place for reflection.

However, if you’re creeped out by ghost stories, maybe skip this one.

Fort Fremont is another must-see on a trip to St. Helena Island.

This historic military installation dates back to the late 19th century and was built to defend the United States coastline during the Spanish-American War.

Guided tours are available, and you can’t beat the views of the coastal Lowcountry.

You are also welcome to enjoy the beach here.

Also, if you plan to go to Hunting Island State Park or Fripp Island, you’ll have to drive through St. Helena Island to get there.

Now you have some potential stops to add to your itinerary!

  • Places to Avoid in St. Helena Island

With low crime rates and so much to see and do, the best advice I can give is to stay off of private property.

That goes as much for the beach of private resorts as it does for a deep marsh home.

Newcomers to the Lowcountry should study Southern culture in addition to the heritage of the Gullah Geechee.

This region still thrives with both cultures, and you want to respect traditions and the way of life.

You’ll meet people with a variety of Southern accents and Creole languages.

I speak English as a first language, and it took me a bit to adjust to my Southern friends, who ended up teaching me a lot about this country and a place I didn’t spend a lot of time in before I was an adult.

Even seemingly little things, like taking your hat off when you’re inside or showing great respect for people and nature, are a way of life here.

Also, if you don’t want to drink sweet tea, don’t order tea.

You’ll get funny looks in the South if you want unsweetened tea.

Also, when ordering a soda, everything is Coke – then they ask, “What kind of Coke?” and you can say, “Pepsi,7 Up, etc.”

Speak of food and drinks – bring them with you from Beaufort before you get to your destination on the island.

This place is remote and rural, with no grocery stores or convenience stores around the corner.

Oh, and if you see the Convenience Center on the map of St. Helena Island, that’s a trash and waste disposal area, not a place for drinks and snacks.

  • Safety Tips for Traveling to St. Helena Island
  • Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office provides law enforcement for this region. You can follow them on Facebook @BeaufortCountySheriffsOfficeSC, but they are on Instagram (@beaufortcountysc_sheriff) and X (@bcsopio).
  • To ask more specific safety questions about the island, call the sheriff’s office at (843) 255-3200 or email them at [email protected]. In America, this kind of information is accessible to the public. You just have to ask your specific questions so they can provide the right data.
  • Download the Everbridge App to get emergency alerts about storms, traffic, safety, and public health hazards. The app is free, and you can unsubscribe easily when you leave. In this rural area, it’s even more important to get alerts since many people won’t surround you.
  • The hurricane season runs from June through November, with a peak between August and October. Take every storm watch or warning seriously. As someone who has lived through several hurricanes, I strongly recommend getting out of town at the first hint of an approaching storm. However, you’ll find evacuation routes, safety shelters, and a hurricane guide on the Beaufort County Emergency Management website.
  • In addition, be prepared to leave at any hint of flooding. With rising sea levels and so much water filtering through this island, you could end up trapped or submerged in water after heavy rains. Remember, there are alligators in that water, too.
  • South Carolina offers separate fishing licenses for saltwater or freshwater. Anyone who plans to go fishing needs to have one of these, even if you’re using a charter boat.
  • Something might stink on St Helena Island, and there’s nothing you can do about it. Pluff Mud is a specific type of dark, sticky clay mud in the marshes that puts off a rotten egg odor. To the people who live here, it smells like home. You’ll get used to it (as much as possible) in a day or two. It’s especially pungent at low tide.
  • Download the Beaufort County Connect App to connect directly with every county department. Maybe you need to know what to do about an alligator in your rental yard or want to see the traffic cameras before you head out for a day at the beach—this app covers any needs of a resident or visitor in Beaufort County.
  • If you suspect a crime has happened, get information about a crime, or want to report a crime that isn’t urgent (like loud music), call Crime Stoppers of the Lowcountry at 843-554-1111. You can remain anonymous. There is a separate hotline for drug activity. That’s 843-255-3719.
  • As the saying goes, “When thunder roars, go indoors.” We have been taught that from an early age where I’m from, and it still holds true. That means when you hear thunder, you’re close enough to get hit by lightning and should go inside. You stay there until 30 minutes after the last clap of thunder.
  • So... How Safe Is St. Helena Island Really?

St. Helena Island’s crime data comes from the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office, which means we’ll only be able to see the bigger picture across the county, not just on the island.

Regardless of any crime data, this is a tourist region.

The community, local leaders, and law enforcement all have a vested interest in keeping the community as safe as possible.

To that end, most of the Lowcountry and islands will have the same general overtone.

In addition, Beaufort County’s violent crime rate is 20% lower than the national average and more than 36% lower than the state average.

As of 2022, just 11% of violent crimes happened against strangers.

It’s also a good reminder to avoid getting involved in someone else’s conflict, even if you are trying to help.

Always call the police instead.

Even thefts are 12% below the national average, with about three pickpockets or purse snatchings occurring each year.

Robberies are exponentially lower than the national average.

Aside from basic personal safety steps, you also need to pay attention to the weather for tropical weather, floods, or severe thunderstorms.

Plus, alligators are in this area, and while an attack is unlikely, you can take basic steps to avoid being near them and taking that risk.

The bugs here can cause an annoying experience, but they also might carry diseases that can plague you for years to come.

Take extra steps to avoid getting bitten by bugs and clean/treat all bites ASAP.

Personally, this area is a little too humid for me unless it’s a winter trip, but if you don’t mind the sweating, you’ll enjoy the laid-back vibe of this Lowcountry destination.

Getting into the United States from outside the country requires a valid passport and either a visa or visa waiver. Only certain people can qualify for that waiver. To see if you do, start at the U.S. State Department website and use the Visa Wizard module.

The U.S. Dollar will be the only currency you can use here. Normally, I'd suggest you use credit cards as much as possible, but on St. Helena Island and nearby islands, there will be fish shacks and some parks that only take cash. The nearby airports have ATMs to exchange currency, but your home bank will offer the lowest rates.

This Lowcountry coastal area is going to be hot and humid in the summer, almost to the point of feeling like you're walking wrapped in a wet blanket. Wear cool, light-colored clothing. Bugs are abundant in this area, too. Bug spray and even Avon's Skin-So-Soft can help keep them at bay, but long pants and long-sleeved shirts will help, too - as long as they are made of thin fabrics so you don't get too hot. This is also a rainy, mild area in the winter.

Savannah's airport is about an hour away, and Charleston's airport is 90 minutes in the other direction. The largest airport in the region is Jacksonville International Airport, but that's nearly three hours south.

Travel Insurance

Comprehensive travel insurance is a great idea for this area, which is prone to severe or tropical weather. You want to ensure you're covered for accidents, health emergencies, canceled flights, and stolen personal items.
