Buddhism, a religion that originated in ancient India, holds great significance in the country. India is home to numerous Buddhist sites that attract tourists from all over the world. These sacred places offer a glimpse into the rich history and teachings of Buddhism. One such notable site is the famous Bodh Gaya, where Gautama Buddha is believed to have attained enlightenment under the Bodhi tree. The Mahabodhi Temple, built on this sacred ground, stands as a symbol of spiritual enlightenment. Similarly, Sarnath, located near Varanasi, is another prominent Buddhist site. It is here that Buddha gave his first sermon, laying the foundation for the formation of the Buddhist community. The ancient ruins of Nalanda University and Ajanta and Ellora caves also hold immense importance in Buddhist history. Our Buddhist Pilgrimage Tour is a specially designed tour that takes pilgrims to the sacred monasteries and Stupas of Nepal. The main objective of the Buddhist Darshan Tour is to make sure that the visitors get to visit the popular and sacred monasteries in Nepal like Lumbini, Boudhanath Stupa, Swyambhunath, and many others. Amongst them, Lumbini is the most sacred of them all, as it is the birth place of Gautama Buddha, the founder of Buddhism. Buddha was born in Lumbini some 2500 years ago. It is one of the iconic places in Nepal and given its historical importance, it remains a widely visited and beloved place in Nepal.

Buddhist Darshan Tour commences from the cultural city of Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal. Besides visiting Bouddhanath Stupa, the largest Stupa in Nepal, and the 2000 year-old Swyambhunath Stupa, located in a hillock in Kathmandu, you will also visit several of the Durbar Squares - ancient Newari kingdoms. They are centuries old and they command great artistry and sculptures. All the three Durbar Squares, and the twin Stupas—Swyambhunath and Boudhhanath—and Lumbini have been enlisted in the UNESCO World Heritage Site as they are not just the treasures of Nepal, but the entire world. You can also visit the Hindu Lord Shiva shrine at the Pashupatinath Temple while in Kathmandu. Buddhist Darshan Tour is the best tour package available if you are curious to learn about Buddhism and the various monuments in Nepal. Even if you are not Buddhist, but are simply curious about Buddhism, this is a great opportunity for you.

Day 1: Arrival in Kathmandu

Our representatives will pick you up at the Tribhuvan International Airport of Kathmandu and take you to the Hotel. There you will be briefed about the itinerary. Dinner will be served in the late evening.

Day 2: Sightseeing in Kathmandu

After breakfast, we start an interesting tour around Kathmandu city. Escorting by an English speaking guide try to give you a full taste of our culture, heritage and local people. Kathmandu Valley includes several UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including Pashupatinath (famous Hindu temple and cremation ground) Boudhanath (massive Buddhist stupa). We can also visit Swyambhunath, known as Monkey Temple, which was built roughly 2000 years ago. Finally, we can visit Patan, city of fine arts. Overnight stay at the hotel.

Day 3: Drive to Pokhara

Leaving Kathmandu behind, we will drive through Prithvi Highway along the road offering scenic beauties of mountains, terraces and river for about 7hrs to take us to Pokhara where we will stay in a Lakeside Hotel overnight.

Day 4: Explore Pokhara

Early in the morning, you will drive to Sarangkot to view the sunrise. Sarangkot is one of the best places in Nepal where you can see sunrise and panoramic mountain views. Afterwards, you will drive back to hotel and take breakfast before proceeding to Pokhara City sightseeing tour:

Bindawasini Temple: Bindawasini is one of the most popular temples in Pokhara. The temple is dedicated to goddess Bhagwati, another manifestation of Shakti. Bindawasini is the mother goddess who fulfills the wishes of her devotees. Davi's Fall: Locally known as the Patale Chhango, Davi's Fall (also known as Devin's and David's) is a lovely waterfall lying about two km south-west of the Pokhara Airport on the Siddhartha Highway.

Gupteswar Cave: Another cave famous for it's religious importance located in the southern end of the city, Chorepatan. This cave is a sacred and natural cave where there is temple of Lord Shiva. Seti Gorge: Another of Pokhara's natural wonders that unfailingly interests visitors is the Seti River. Amazingly, at certain points the river appears hardly two meters wide. But its depth is quite beyond imagination over 20 meters. Mountains Museum: Mountains and Mountaineering have a history of their own. Without preserving it, It will not be long before all the records and evidences will be lost forever. Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA), established on 1Nov 1973, initiated the establishment of international Mountain Museum(IMM) in Pokhara. The basic objective for its establishment was made to record, document and chronicle the past and present development of mountaineering activities in the world in general and to preserve the saga of the momentous feats in the history of mountaineering in the Himalayan peaks in particular. In evening leisure, overnight stay at Hotel.

Day 5: Drive to Lumbini

It takes about 7 hrs of drive to reach Lumbini which is the birthplace of Lord Buddha—the propounder of Buddhism. Later we will head back to the hotel in Lumbini.

Day 7: Drive to Chitwan

The journey for the day commences by driving for about 3hrs to cover 90km of distance to make it to Chitwan.  We will spend the rest of the day exploring the sites in Chitwan.  If you would like to leave later in the day from Lumbini, you can explore more of Lumbini in the morning. Client reviews.

My favorite part about the tour was its itinerary. I chose this one specifically for the diverse number of locations, and to see as much as possible of Nepal in 10 days, and it definitely delivered. From valleys to mountains, lakes to jungles, to stupas and temples, Nepal is without a doubt, a beautiful country, with plenty of stunning vistas (like an endless supply of jaw-dropping sights ahahha). It does have a few issues with its infrastructure, but honestly, once you reach any of your destinations, you simply forget about them and enjoy the view and the experience. Furthermore, I'd like to mention that the guides were really helpful and essential in facilitating various elements of any journey in a new country. To conclude, it truly was a memorable experience, one you should give a try.

TourRadar

The tour was good in respect to seeing a variety of places in Nepal. Chitwan was my favourite part of the trip and the hotel in Chitwan was really good. Everything was included in Chitwan so it was a cheap part of the trip. The cost to get into all the temples and excursions adds up and I wasn't aware just how expensive that total would be which was a surprise. I feel it would have been more enjoyable if there was more people but Guide was knowledgeable,Helpful then i didnot feel alone. His knowledge about the temples was very good. Overall I would recommend this tour.

Guide to India's Mahaparinirvan Express Buddhist Circuit Train

A Special Train Tour that Visits India's Important Buddhist Sites

buddha darshan tour

The Mahaparinirvan Express is a special tourist train that takes passengers on a spiritual tour through Buddhist India, where Buddhism originated more than 2,500 years ago.

The train gets its name from the Mahaparinirvana Sutra, which contains the Buddha's final explanation of his teachings. Its sacred journey includes visits to the most important Buddhist pilgrimage sites of Lumbini (where the Buddha was born), Bodhgaya (where he became enlightened), Sarnath (where he first preached), and Kushinagar (where he passed away and achieved nirvana).

Train Features

The Mahaparinirvan Express is operated by Indian Railways using carriages from a Rajdhani Express train. It has a dedicated dining carriage, hygienic kitchen that prepares passenger meals, and bathroom cubicles with showers. The train is comfortable but far from opulent, unlike India's luxury tourist trains , but then again pilgrimages aren't normally associated with luxury! Passengers are greeted with garlands, provided with luggage assistance, and given a welcome gift of a Buddhist guidebook. Security guards are present on the train, and tours are fully guided.

2020-21 and 2021-22 Departures

The train departs from Delhi , one or two Saturdays per month from September until March.

  • Departure dates for 2020-21 are November 21, December 19, January 16, February 13, February 27, March 13.
  • Departure dates for 2021-22 are September 25, October 9, October 23, November 6, November 20, December 4, December 8, January 1, January 15, January 29, February 12, February 26, March 12, March 26.

Journey Duration

The tour runs for seven nights/eight days. However, it's possible to travel only on selected parts of the route as long as your booking is for a minimum three nights.

Route and Itinerary

The itinerary is as follows:

  • Day One - Afternoon departure from Safdarjang Railway Station in Delhi to Gaya.
  • Day Two - Visit Bodhgaya temples by bus and stay the night at a hotel in Bodhgaya.
  • Day Three - Visit Rajgir and Nalanda by bus, and then board to the train to Varanasi at Gaya.
  • Day Four - Arrive at Varanasi , visit Sarnath (the tallest statue of Lord Buddha in India is in Sarnath), and attend the evening Ganga aarti ceremony alongside the Ganges River in Varanasi. Board the train to Nautanwa at Varanasi.
  • Day Five - Visit Lumbini in Nepal by bus, and stay the night at a hotel there.
  • Day Six - Visit Kushinagar by bus, and then proceed to Gorakhpur railway station for departure to Balrampur.
  • Day Seven - Visit Sravasti by bus, and return to Balrampur. for departure to Agra.
  • Day Eight - Visit the Taj Mahal in Agra and Fatehpur Sikri ). Return to Delhi by 6 p.m.

Cost and Classes of Travel

Three classes of travel are offered: air-conditioned first class (1AC), air-conditioned first class coupe, and air-conditioned two-tier (2AC). 1AC has four beds (two upper and two lower) in an enclosed compartment with lockable door, while there are only two beds (one upper and one lower) in the coupe. 2AC has four beds (two upper and two lower) in an open compartment with no door. If you're unsure about what the different classes of travel mean, this guide to accommodations on Indian Railways trains provides an explanation.

For 2020-21 departures, the fare in 1AC is $165 per person, per night, or $1,155 for the full tour. 2AC costs $135 per person, per night, or $945 for the full tour. The 1AC Coupe is $165 per person, per night, or $1,305 for the full tour.

A 10% discount is available for Indian citizens. A 50% discount on companion fare is also offered on certain departure dates for foreigners and Indians.

The cost includes the train journey, food, road transfers by air-conditioned vehicle, sightseeing, monument entrance fees, tour escort, insurance, and hotel stay in air-conditioned rooms where required.

Positives and Negatives

The tour is well-organized to international standards. However, something to be aware of is that there are a couple of long journeys by road. Passengers may find this uncomfortable due to lack of proper facilities, such as toilets, along the way. However, effort will be made to provide breaks at appropriate places. Rooms are also made available during the day at decent hotels, for passengers to freshen up and have breakfast.

On board, the train is kept very clean and the staff are courteous. Bed linen is changed every day, and the diverse dinner menu includes Asian and western cuisine. Special dietary requirements are catered for.

Overall, the Mahaparinirvan Express provides a convenient way to visit India's Buddhist sites. It attracts spiritual-seekers and pilgrims from all around the world.

Bookings and More Information

You can get more information or make reservations for travel on the Mahaparinirvan Express by visiting the Indian Railways Catering & Tourism Corporation's Buddhist Circuit Tourist Train website.

Visas for Nepal

As the journey includes a day trip to Nepal, those who aren't Indian nationals will need a Nepali visa. This can easily be obtained at the border . Two passport-sized photographs are required. Foreign tourists with Indian visas must make sure that these are double or multiple entry visas, so that return to India will be allowed.

Mahaparinirvan Express Odisha Special

Indian Railways added a new service, the Mahaparinirvan Express Odisha Special, in 2012. It included pilgrimage sites in Odisha , as well as important sites in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. However, it has unfortunately been canceled due to lack of interest and poor advertising.

Muktinath temple is located in Muktinath Valley at the foot of the Thorong La mountain pass in Mustang, Nepal. It is situated at an altitude of 3800 m making it one of the highest temples in the world. It is a Vishnu Temple that is revered as holy and sacred by both Hindu and Buddhists and visited by pilgrims from all over the world. It is one of the most sacred temples where both the Hindus and Buddhists with the divine blessings have co-existenced for the past 14 centuries..

Hindus consider it to be a '’ Shakti peetha'’ meaning primordial cosmic energy which was formed by the fallen body parts of Sati Devi when Lord Shiva had gone around with her lifeless body mourning her death. It is one of the Char Dham (four shrines) in Nepal. It is also called ‘’Mukti Khshetra’’ meaning ‘’place of liberation’’.

Buddhists call it ''Chumig Gyatsa’’ meaning ‘’Hundred waters’’ and is according to Buddhists it is the place where the goddess of sky dancers ‘’dakinis’’ reside making it one of the tantric places. Tibetan Buddhist tradition also states that Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava) the founder of Tibetan Buddhism, meditated at Muktinath on his way to Tibet.

Wide roads and a beautiful landscape lead you to this ancient temple. As you climb the stairs you will be mesmerized by the beauty of this holy place.

The main temple structure is small in the style of a pagoda, with the deities inside. It contains a golden human-size idol of Lord Vishnu called Mukti Narayan made purely of Gold. The temple also has bronze images of Bhoodevi, the goddesses Saraswati and Janaki, Garuda, Lava-Kusa and the Sapta Rishis. Hindu Vaishnavas consider the central shrine to be one of the eight most sacred shrines, known as Svayam Vyakta Kshetras. Tibetan Buddhists believe the idol to be a manifestation of Avalokiteśvara, who embodies the compassion of all Buddhas.

In front of Muktinath Temple, there are 2 Kunda (Water ponds). This is generally used for holy dipping and is believed to hold the power to wash away negative karma and the results of one’s past negative actions.

Holy water from the Kali Gandaki River flows out of the mouth of the 108 bulls behind the Temple. Here the devotees take their sacred bath even in the freezing temperature. The holy tank through which the water flows is called Pushkarini waters. The number 108 signifies the 108 padas of the 27 Nakshatras.

You will also see prayer flags hoisted with its holy mantras flying in the air, which according to belief the wind transports the message to the God above. The pilgrims offer Prasad to the deity and offer their prayers which are conducted by a Buddhist nun.

Jwala Mai, the Goddess of Fire which is a `miraculous fire', is situated near the entrance gate of the Mebar Lha Gomba, the small monastery dedicated to Padmasambhava. Pilgrims also visit this site after visiting the main shrine. The Hindus believe that this fire was lit as an offering made by Brahma himself, (the creator) as he set water on fire.

Muktinath Temples Darshan (visit) will ward off and remove all your sorrows and miseries.

The most ideal period to visit Muktipath Temple is from March to June and from September to November. It Snows in these areas in December & January and June-September is the rainy monsoon month. Those who want to enjoy the beauty of the snow and are the adventurous ones can even visit in December and January.

The shrine is positioned on a high-mountain range & is toured throughout the fair climate. To arrive at Muktinath one can travel by air. The flight journey from Pokhara-Jomsom and from there trek for seven to eight hours from Jomsom. You can also look for a jeep tour to explore all the sightseeing it has to offer.

Muktinath has different aspects rather than just having a religious aspect. While the place is famous for trekking, you can also witness a wide range of flora and fauna here. Activities such as mountain biking, cycling, rock climbing, and horse riding are also popular here. Since the terrains are akin to that of Tibet’s, you also get to experience the culture there which is a perfect blend of Nepalese and Tibetan.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1 - arrival at kathmandu, nepal and half day sightseeing.

After refreshment, you’ll make your way to Pashupatinath and Guheshwori. Pashupatinath is one of Nepal’s important Hindu Temple. The present pagoda-style temple was constructed in 1696 A.D. The Pashupatinath Temple complex resembles a life-size collage of life: faith, generosity, poverty, life, death mingle here in an unceasing flow. Regarded as a "Shakti Peetha", Guheshwori Temple was built by King Pratap Malla in the 17th century. The temple is dedicated to Goddess Parvati (wife of Lord Shiva). It is considered an important Hindu pilgrimage destination.

Return to the hotel for an overnight stay.

Once you land at Tribhuvan International Airport, Kathmandu, we will assist you at the airport and transfer you to the hotel. After a quick refreshment, be ready for darshan of Pashupatinath and Guheshwori Temples.

Day 2 - Flight to Pokhara and Full day sightseeing of Pokhara City

The Gupteshwor Mahadev Cave is a subterranean spiritual center. There is a large stalagmite in the cave, revered as a natural Shiva Linga. There is also something for the atheist and agnostic. You can enter a tunnel behind the linga and reach a moist chamber near the roaring Davis Falls.

Local legend has it that this waterfall got its name from a Swiss tourist called David and his girlfriend, who unfortunately fell into the waters and drowned. Patale Chango as it is called in Nepali is a spectacular waterfall marking the point where the Pardi Khola stream vanishes underground. Hearing the water plunging through makes it a more sensory experience.

Boating becomes a pilgrimage if you go to Pokhara's most famous Hindu temple, the Barahi Mandir. It is the 18th century Vishnu temple, the god residing here in his "boar avatar".

What better way to start a visit to a place referred to as the Lake City than to go boating? Boating is almost an unwritten law in Pokhara. From the expanse of the lake most of the nearby places are visible, so you can pick and plan visits.

We recommend you take copies of the main passport pages and other important documents with you as well. And also please ensure that the name on your passport and airline ticket matches exactly.

 VISAS

Entry necessities can alternate at any time. Visas can take several weeks to process, so make sure you research the requirements as soon as you have booked your trip to allow for obtaining any necessary documents as well as the application and processing time.

 NEPAL :

All foreign nationals (except Indian passport holders) require a visa to enter Nepal. In the arrivals hall, you’ll find electronic kiosks that read your passport, take your photo, and print out a completed form. Take your completed form to the payment counter where you'll pay for your visa, and then head to the immigration line for "Visa on Arrival". You may also need to provide two passport photos and the following fees in US dollars (subject to change, cash only). Other currencies are also accepted although rates may differ. The following costs were correct at the time of writing:

- Multi-entry visa valid for 15 days - US$30

- Multi-entry visa valid for 30 days - US$50

- Multi-entry visa valid for 90 days - US$125

Your visa application form may require you to state the dates on which you enter and exit that country.

Medical and health information

GENERAL HEALTH

Consider your physical and mental health before you travel, especially if you have an existing medical condition. Consider whether you may be in a vulnerable category for COVID-19. See your doctor or travel clinic to have a basic health check-up, ask if your travel plans may affect your health, and plan any vaccinations you need. Do this at least 8 weeks before you leave.

Vaccination Policy

All travelers on Nepal trips (outside Australia, New Zealand, and the Cook Islands) are required to produce proof of full vaccination against COVID-19. From 1 December 2021, all travelers on trips, including in Australia, New Zealand, and the Cook Islands, are required to produce proof of full vaccination against COVID-19.

AIR POLLUTION:

Air quality in Nepal can be poor, especially in winter. Some towns, including Kathmandu, experience very high levels of seasonal smog and heavy particulate pollution. Seek medical advice if you're concerned about the effects of air pollution.

MOSQUITO-BORNE ILLNESSES:

Malaria and Dengue fever are a risk in various parts of Nepal. Mostly, during the monsoon season. Protect yourself against insect bites by wearing clothing that covers as much skin as possible, including repellent while sleeping under a net.

MEDICAL FACILITIES AND TREATMENT:

Healthcare services are unevenly distributed across the country and access to care in some areas may be limited. Healthcare in Kathmandu generally meets international standards but healthcare throughout the rest of the country may be inadequate. Ensure that you have accessible funds to cover upfront fees and adequate travel health insurance, including evacuation. Hospitals in Nepal typically require upfront payment in cash or credit card, regardless if you have travel health insurance.

Food and dietary requirements

FOOD IN NEPAL:

In Kathmandu and Pokhara there are plenty of restaurants and cafes for all tastes and budgets. Nepal caters very well to vegetarians and vegans with almost all restaurants having a veg section on the menu.

Accommodation

LUGGAGE LIMITS:

Domestic flights in Nepal have strict weight limits - 10kg of check-in luggage and 5kg of carry-on hand luggage per person is included with your flight ticket. Excess baggage (up to 5kg per person only) will be charged at your own expense.

ROAD TRAVEL:

Roadwork and infrastructure projects can cause significant delays on major roads within cities and highways between destinations. Road travel can also be disrupted due to demonstrations and strikes without warning. Major roadworks are currently ongoing in and around Kathmandu and the roads to Chitwan National Park. Delays, heavy traffic, poor road conditions, and dust are a reality of road travel in Nepal.

The monsoon season is from June to September and weather conditions can disrupt travel during this time due to flooding and landslides. Disruption of air travel and airport closures are also possible. Be prepared that the itinerary may need to change at short notice.

INTERNAL FLIGHTS:

There have been a number of air accidents in Nepal. We only use airlines that have passed strict safety audits for including internal flights in Nepal, including Buddha Air, Yeti Air & Tara Air.

Money matters

The official currency of Nepal is the Nepali rupee (NPR). Its symbol is often displayed as Rs. ATMs can only be found in Kathmandu, Pokhara, and Bhaktapur. Make sure you carry sufficient cash to cover your needs when traveling outside of these cities. Money exchange facilities are available in Kathmandu, Namche, Pokhara, Chitwan (only outside the park), and Bhaktapur. Credit cards are not widely accepted.

You are responsible only for the personal clothing and gear listed below. We'll take care of everything else.  A gear check will be completed before you depart for the trail. This list does not include additional clothing/items you may want for travel or for your time off the trail. Below is a list of equipment and documentation that we suggest you take with you. Please use this checklist as a guide when packing for your holiday.

- Travel documents: passport, visa (if required), travel insurance, air tickets or e-ticket receipts, trip notes

- Photocopy of main passport pages, visa (if required), travel insurance, and air tickets

- Spare passport photos

- Money: cash/credit card/EFTPOS card

- Money belt

- Small padlocks

- Personal first-aid kit

- Watch/alarm clock and torch/flashlight (and spare batteries)

- Electrical adapter plug

- Toiletries/roll of toilet paper/travel wipes

- Insect repellent

- Sunscreen, lip balm, sunhat, and sunglasses

- Earplugs and eye mask (for light sleepers)

- Extra pair of prescription glasses (if required)

- 2 strong plastic garbage bags (for laundry and in case of rain)

- Refillable water bottle

- Phrasebook

- Warm clothes - when traveling in cooler climates

- Wind and waterproof jacket

- Comfortable and sturdy walking shoes with good walking socks

- Camera/phone (with charger)

- Binoculars

Informal clothing is all that is required. Remember to dress in a modest fashion. Light clothing is usually all that will be required for most of the year. During the winter months, December to February, it will be chilly and possibly foggy in the early mornings, with temperatures dropping down to a minimum of around 0ºC on some days. A warm, windproof jacket will be required.

Climate and seasonal information

Nepal's climate varies greatly depending on the season:

JUN - SEP: the monsoon rains (mostly at night) bring landslides in regional areas. Cloud cover often obscures mountain views with rain, mud, and leeches deterring most trekkers at this time of year. Treks running in September can be hot and very humid at lower altitudes.

MAR-APR: Spring brings warm weather and spectacular rhododendron blooms. A popular time to visit and one of the peak times to trek.

OCT - NOV: Clear skies and warm days make autumn the peak season.

DEC - FEB: Winter brings cold temperatures and snow to the mountains. Good trekking, but remember to rug up.

Phone and internet access

Hotels in Kathmandu generally have excellent WiFi connections. Most hotels offer free WiFi in public areas, with some also offering in-room WIFI, sometimes for an additional fee.

Group Leader

The goal of the group leader is to make your travels easier and to help you have the best trip possible. Have a broad general knowledge of the places visited on the trip, including historical, cultural, religious, and social aspects.

We recommend that you check your government's advice for their latest travel information before departure and ensure that your travel insurance covers you for all destinations and activities on your trip. We strongly recommend the use of a neck wallet or money belt while traveling, for the safe-keeping of your passport, flight tickets, cash, and other valuable items. Your leader will accompany you on all included activities, however, during your trip you'll have some free time to pursue your own interests or relax and take it easy.

Strikes happen on a very frequent basis in Nepal. Most, but not all, of the recent strikes are political in nature and are generally called for the night before with little or no warning. If you arrive as a tourist during a busy political time of year there's a strong chance you might not be able to travel the country as much as you would normally.

Travel protection is highly recommended to protect your travel investment from unforeseen circumstances that may occur during or before your trip. Make sure your insurance covers you for your intended activities, including travel and trekking above 3000m if this is included on your itinerary, mountain rescue services, and helicopter evacuation costs.

The weather is not the only factor when thinking about when to go to Nepal. This Himalayan nation has a rich history, which can be discovered through its festivals. Nepal’s festival calendar fills every month of the year with colorful celebrations that offer interesting insights into the local culture. Stumbling onto a local festival may prove to be the highlight of your travels in Nepal – and given the sheer number of them, you’d be unlucky not to. Festivals may be Hindu, Buddhist, animist, or a mix of all three. Traveling in Nepal during Holi Festival (28-29 March 2021, 27-28 March 2022), can at times be dangerous due to revelers consuming intoxicating substances. The day is often associated with physical violence and danger. Traveling during the Hindu festival Diwali (4 November 2021, 24 November 2022) can also be dangerous. During this time there are many displays of fireworks in the streets. It can be very noisy for several days and there is also a lot of pollution caused by the fireworks.

Culture shock

Not all cultures share the same beliefs and values. These differences can cause severe culture shock. Some culture shocks that travelers might find while traveling in Nepal are:

Don’t assume people speak your language. In cultures where you don’t speak the language, simple tasks suddenly become more complicated- like riding a bus or ordering food at a restaurant.

Some Asian cultures such as Indian, Korean, and Chinese openly spit on the sidewalk same with Nepal.

In some Asian countries such as Thailand, India, Nepal, and some Muslim countries such as Morocco, using water and your hands, not toilet paper, is considered much cleaner than using toilet paper.

There is poverty all over the world but it never seems real until you experience it firsthand. There is a number of homeless beggars and slums in Nepal. There are piles of the garbage next to rivers, people sleeping in gutters, and meat being butchered on a tarp next to the street.

After your arrival, you will run into people who will offer you a taxi ride or a cheap hotel. When you hop into a car and leave through the gate of the airport you will see the snake driving vehicles. There are dividers but the car might go to the wrong side to overtake, which is very normal here, and therefore no reason to worry.

When in Nepal, don’t expect things to go on time. You will face delays almost in all activities. There is even a phrase “Nepali Time” which is used sarcastically to point out delays in activities.

You might see guys holding hands when they are walking down the street. Guys holding hands in Nepal is a sign of a good friendship and brotherhood.

At monuments, museums, Durbar Squares, etc if someone starts following you and explaining things, they are hiring themselves as your guide and expecting to be paid at the end. Tell them clearly their services are not required pronto, or things are going to get awkward.

(Travel Restrictions, COVID Tests & Quarantine Requirements)

Vaccination Requirements: Nepal is open to both vaccinated and unvaccinated travelers. However, vaccinated individuals can bypass the testing rules that require travelers to provide proof of a negative coronavirus test taken no more than 72 hours before travel. All travelers regardless of vaccination status must have travel insurance that covers health, immediate crisis, or rescue for the duration of the trip; proof of accommodation in Nepal; a completed International Travel Arrival Form; and either a Nepalese visa or a recommendation from the tourism board.

1. Passengers must have a COVID-19 vaccination certificate showing that they were fully vaccinated at least 14 days before arrival. This does not apply to Nationals of Nepal, Passengers of Nepali origin (Non-Resident Nepali (NRN)), and their family members, or Passengers with a visa issued by a diplomatic representation of Nepal.

2. Passengers must have a negative COVID-19 test result taken at most 72 hours before departure from the first embarkation point. Tests accepted are Gene X pert, NAAT, and RT-PCR. This does not apply to passengers younger than 5 years.

3. Passengers must obtain an International Traveller Online Arrival Form at https://ccmc.gov.np/

4. Passengers must have a hotel reservation confirmation. This does not apply to nationals of Nepal, Spouses of Nepali nationals, Passengers of Nepali origin, and their family members.

5. Passengers could be subject to hotel quarantine for 10 days at their own expense. This does not apply to passengers with a COVID-19 vaccination certificate showing that they were fully vaccinated at least 14 days before arrival.

6. Visa on arrival facilities restarted for eligible passengers with a COVID-19 vaccination certificate showing that they were fully vaccinated at least 14 days before arrival. This does not apply to passengers traveling with an emergency passport, a temporary passport, or a temporary travel document.
