Formed in Garden Grove, California, The Offspring became hugely popular during their glory days of the '90s, with their anthemic, metal-tinged punk that helped reignite interest in the genre for a new generation.

Featuring Dexter Holland (lead vocals, rhythm guitar), Kevin "Noodles" Wasserman (lead guitar), Greg K (bass) and Pete Parada (drums), the beginnings of the band started in 1984, coming together under the moniker, Manic Subsidal. In 1986, they changed their name to The Offspring, A string of independent releases followed, with the band slowly gaining a footing in the West Coast punk scene.

Their self-titled debut appeared in 1989 to moderate success. Yet with their second record, "Ignition," The Offspring became underground favorites, finding fans of their relentless, power chord-driven punk. By 1994, fortunes were abut to change dramatically for The Offspring, with the release of their third album, "Smash." Despite being released on an independent label, "Smash" became a hit of the same name, propelling the band to stardom overnight, selling over four million records. Taking their cues from Nirvana and their quiet/loud dynamics, The Offspring found a string of singles make their way to chart success, with "Self-Esteem" and "Come Out And Play" gaining significant airplay.

Despite major labels knocking at the door, The Offspring decided to stay at the small independent, Epitaph, touring extensively thereafter across the US. After two years, the band caved and decided to join major label Columbia Records, a move that caused controversy amongst punk fans, garnering accusations of selling out. Regardless, their third album, "Ixnay on the Hombre," arrived in February 1997, a record that whilst maintaining positive critical acclaim, it failed to reach the same heights of success as "Smash."

In 1998, "Americana" attempted to regain the band's momentum, finding a hit with the pop-punk single, "Pretty Fly (for a white guy)," returning the quartet to mainstream success. "Conspiracy of One" was to be their next release, a record they threatened to offer as a free download online but their record company denied them this desire, with the record receiving a conventional release in 2000.

Three years later, The Offspring had recorded a new album of material, with "Splinter" offering a return to form. Subsequently, they embarked on international tours during which they found legions of fans across several continents. In 2005, a Greatest Hits was released, featuring new music in the single, "Can't Repeat." Their relentless touring schedule may have set new music releases back, but in 2008, they returned with "Rise and Fall, Rage and Grace," displaying a hotly anticipated return to form. Still hard at work over twenty years into their career, "Days Go By" was released in 2012 displaying a more mature sound for their fans.

Live reviews

The Offspring are a pop-punk band best known for a string of hits in the 90’s that you probably heard in at least one movie soundtrack or TV show, such as “Why Don’t You Get a Job?” and “Pretty Fly for a White Guy”.

They are known for their humorous, sardonic songs and their commercial success, as they are one of the most successful pop-punk bands of all time. They might not have the credibility of more underground punk bands, but their live show is undeniably a fun and energetic experience for even the most jaded punk fan.

They tend to draw a younger crowd, consisting of a good mix of people in their 20’s and 30’s nostalgic for the good old days of the 90’s, as well as younger people who are just discovering the band. The band has been around for quite some time, especially in a genre where bands sometimes only last a year or two, so they demonstrate a streamlined, workman-like approach that can only come with many years of practice and dedication, but they also never lose touch with their somewhat juvenile sense of humor.

There is a large amount of audience interaction, even when the band is playing larger festivals, with lots of stage-diving, singing along, etc. Anyone who grew up in the 90’s or is a fan of 90’s culture should see The Offspring, if only for the nostalgia.

Absolutely amazing venue! We brought our 2 daughters (16 & 13) for their first concert. We got there early and were 6 people from the front!

Security got rid of the drunk asshole within the 1st 30 minutes of the opening act... he snuck back in and they got him again! - It was crowded and pot smoke filled the air but the vibe was chill.... Until Offspring came on stage - within 10 seconds of the 1st song a mosh pit formed - a 6'4" 275lb guy decided to get in my face and my girls started freaking out... I guess I am the mama bear type cuz I shoved right back. Protecting the girls from the pit I kept pushing.. I fell into the pit and was pulled out instantly and we rushed through the crowd to get away from the pit- both daughters crying now...Security here is amazing - they saw my girls crying and brought them waters and let them sit.. We got them calmed and enjoyed the rest of the show!

Offspring was fantastic and Sublime w/Rome phenomenal!! - Plus 1st time I ever heard the Menzingers, and they are great!!!

Pop-punk band The Offspring are known well for their satirical and tongue in cheek approach to music. They have been performing as a band since the mid-80's and really know how to work their crowd. A technically able live band, the fun aspect of their show comes out when performing early material such as 'Self Esteem' and 'Come Out and Play'.

A great festival act, they really know how to interact with their audience and the sheer sound of the music along with the crowd's cheers can draw revellers from around the site to their stage. The band are beginning to show their age yet when classic songs such as 'All I Want' begin they play like a group thirty years their junior.

Supported by a mammoth crowd who clap, cheer and fist pump at all the right moments. The atmosphere is electric throughout as the band play a career spanning set of cult hits, the finale of 'Pretty Fly (For A White Guy)' and 'The Kids Aren't Alright' receives mammoth applause and cheers and cements the group's reputation as cult icons.

The show was canceled due to protests for better living conditions in the country! Throughout the week, thousands of Chileans took to the streets to protest for improvements in health, education, transportation. Revolted by government corruption and tired of being exploited by the system.

Because of this situation, the offspring show had to be canceled

Was an amazing concert. I just wish they would've played the song I went there for. I was hoping for GONE AWAY. I lost my father a year ago and had a connection with this song. Guess I'll have to wait for five finger death punch to return to hear that song live.

Terrible. I been in shoreline multiple times and for the first time the sound was terrible.

All the speakers from the laws where off. i already have tickets for others concerts there and I'm thinking of selling them if they don't fix the sound soon.

This was my first Offspring show. It was great. I wish they would have played longer. I did have a really good time. A friend and I drove from Minneapolis to Souix Falls S.D. to see them. They do not seem to come to Minneapolis/St Paul much.

Sick show! The sound was good though the Luna park doesn't have a good acoustic. To me The Offspring is a up lifting band! So I spend the whole concert in to moshpit! So it was pretty enjoyable!

P.D: Noodles is such a cool dude!

It’s going to be great!” said Dexter Holland of The Offspring

“We couldn’t be more excited to get back on tour all across the US with our friends The Offspring and Sum 41! We had such a blast touring with both of them last year that we just had to do it again and put together what we feel will be one of the most awesome tours of the summer. Frequently regarded as one of the best rock bands of all time, The Offspring have garnered a reputation for their unmistakable sound and social comment. The multi-platinum band first achieved worldwide success in the 90’s with the release of their album Smash, which sold over 11 million copies. Following Smash, they continued to release hit after hit, popularizing rock at a mainstream level. The group is also currently working on new music.

Throughout their career, they’ve sold over a staggering 40 million albums, and toured arenas, and built a global fan base. Let the Bad Times Roll marks the band’s tenth studio album and third album produced by the legendary Bob Rock. True to the irreverence at the core of their rock music, the band and lyricist Dexter Holland took a view to today’s cultural moments and didn’t shy away from creating topical material in this album.

ABOUT OFFSPRING

The Offspring is an American rock band from Garden Grove, California, formed in 1984. Originally formed under the name Manic Subsidal, the band’s lineup consists of lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist Bryan “Dexter” Holland, bassist Todd Morse and lead guitarist Kevin “Noodles” Wasserman. Over the course of their 38-year career, they have released ten studio albums. The Offspring is often credited—alongside fellow California bands Green Day and Rancid—for reviving mainstream interest in rock in the 1990s. They have sold over 40 million records worldwide, making them one of the best-selling rock bands in history.

ABOUT SIMPLE PLAN

From their new millennium rise to MTV superstardom through pop-punk’s modern resurgence, SIMPLE PLAN have been an indelible part of pop culture since forming in Montreal in 1999. They’ve sold 10 million albums worldwide, won multiple Juno Awards, performed at the 2010 Winter Olympics – and, most recently, launched the omnipresent #ImJustAKid TikTok challenge that’s spawned more than 3.4 million videos, including clips from Hilary Duff, Ed Sheeran, Usher and Venus and Serena Williams. But most importantly, they’ve never lost connection with what really matters: their audience.

That ambition is fully on display on the band’s sixth studio album, HARDER THAN IT LOOKS. The first self-released album from Comeau, vocalist Pierre Bouvier and guitarists Sébastien Lefebvre and Jeff Stinco, the album respects Simple Plan’s storied career while pushing forward in new ways, with songs like “The Antidote,” “Ruin My Life” (ft. Deryck Whibley),“Congratulations,” “Wake Me Up (When This Nightmare’s Over)” and “Iconic” set to stand as fan favorites for years to come.

ABOUT SUM 41

Looking back at the band’s storied 27-year career with over 15 million records sold worldwide, multiple Billboard Charting releases, a Grammy Award nomination, 2 Juno Awards (7 nominations), a Kerrang! Award in 2002, and multiple Alternative Press Music Awards , Sum 41 is still at the top of their game. Vocalist Deryck Whibley shas hared that the band’s new double album, titled Heaven and Hell , is shaping up to be the most ambitious of their career – half of the album brings Sum 41 back to their pop punk roots, Heaven , and half of the album is strictly metal, Hell .

There's still a lot to be done but we hope to finish it up really quickly and I think we will as we are seeing the light at the end of the tunnel.. I think we are about 12 or 13 songs in. They probably won't all go on the record but we have some good stuff. It's going to be great and it's going to be the best damn record we ever did. "You know what's a really good sign? When you are working on a song and going 'I really want this to be a hit.' When you play it for a niece or nephew, or a young kid, preferably about five and if it sticks with that kid and you hear them humming it later in the day. But if they don't do it right away, the tendency is you play it to them 10 times in a row and play a couple of songs and see what sticks We're not finished yet but we've looked at the whole of what we have and I'm really stoked as there is some great stuff there

The 2023 edition of Hellfest featured KISS, Slipknot, Iron Maiden, Mötley Crüe, Def Leppard, Arch Enemy, Within Temptation, Skid Row, Incubus, and many more, keeping the previous year’s haste with 200,000 sold-out tickets before the full lineup was even announced, according to Le Monde .

How The Offspring Became One Of The Biggest Punk Bands In The World

In this 2001 interview, Dexter and Noodles reflect on years of touring, getting stabbed, playing gigs in caves and sleeping in drug dens

The Offspring at London's Brixton Academy, 1995

It’s the summer of 1993 and I’m congratulating Dexter Holland, the fresh-faced and braided-hair singer with The Offspring. He’s just stepped off stage after playing a blinding set – consisting of pretty much the entire Ignition album – in Newport’s TJs. “Hey thanks man,” says Dexter, grinning all over. “I didn’t think anyone here would have known us…” The Offspring played that toilet circuit of the UK just once. The next time they came back, their third album, Smash , had gone nuclear.

Fast forward to this year’s Conspiracy Of One world tour and they’re playing their biggest ever show to 15,000 in Paris. Americana sales wordwide have reached over 12 million, while Smash is pushing the 13 million mark. The Offspring are officially the biggest punk band. Ever.

But let’s go back. Way back. How did it all start? “I’d known Dexter for some time because he lived round the corner from us,” says guitarist Noodles, known to his mum as Kevin Wasserman. Singer/guitarist Dexter Holland, bassist Greg Kriesel and Noodles all grew up in Garden Grove – a conservative town with the world’s first drive-in church – in south-east LA’s Orange County – a suburb renowned for both Disneyland and as a bastion of right-wing politics. The ideal place to start a punk band, then.

Sticksman Ron Welty came from a bit further down the road in Cyprus. Ron replaced original drummer James Lilja – the ‘Pete Best’ of The Offspring – who was more interested in staying in UCLA and going to parties with his fraternity chums than wasting time jamming with some two-bit punk band who were going nowhere fast… doh!

In the mid-80s, Noodles started his own band called Clowns of Death. Dexter joined for a while but then started up his own band with school friend Greg (that Noodles later joined) called the Manic Subsidals, after seeing Orange County punk legends Social Distortion live. Being three years older than Dexter and Greg, it’s rumoured Noodles was enlisted for his ability to procure alcohol, rather than his guitar skills.

Plagued by their awful moniker, they decided it was time for a change. “It was just a horrible name,” says Noodles, who was working as a school janitor at the time –a job he continued until sales of Smash took off. “The Offspring was the only name everyone could agree on,” he tells us. “I think it was actually James our original drummer who came up with it.”

Ron Welty joined in 1986, just after The Offspring recorded their first self-financed seven inch I ’ll Be Waiting . Influences that shaped their early sound were wide-ranging. “I was listening to bands like Ramones and The Clash,” says Noodles. “They showed me I didn’t have to be Jimi Hendrix or Eddie Van Halen to play the guitar. I just started jamming with friends; taking guitars down the park and having a few beers.”

Dexter was a punk fan from the word go. “There was something about the punk bands when I was a kid that inspired me, rather than wanting to be in a band,” he says. “Bands like Ramones and Dead Kennedys. I think it was more the idea that these bands put forward: anyone can do it. It was music that really related to average kids and music that the average kid could do.”

It was that DIY spirit that kicked off the entire SoCal – not to mention the US – punk scene. Dexter: “Jello Biafra from Dead Kennedys once said that after Ramones did this one US tour in 1978, almost every town they played in, all of a sudden, five new bands sprung up.”

So what was the Orange County punk scene like when Offspring were starting out in the mid-late 80s? “It was kind of in a lull,” says Dexter. “It was a really exciting time about four years before we started. There were a lot of great bands like Social Distortion, TSOL and The Adolescents that sprung up in the early 80s but that whole scene died out.”

That lack of a real scene in their hometown had other consequences for the band. Dexter: “When we started out there weren’t really places to have concerts and there wasn’t too much of a scene happening like there was in San Francisco. But that just made us look elsewhere. So we started playing more shows further afield.

“We used to do shows out in the desert. There was this guy in Las Vegas who used to put on shows but he couldn’t find a venue. So he’d rent out generators then pass out flyers, and he would go about 50 miles out into the desert and just set up and have concerts. It was amazing.

“We once played a show at a house that was going to be demolished. This guy goes, ‘come and do a show here, we can just mess up the house!’ So we played the show and the people there destroyed the house!”

“One of the bands we played with the most was Guttermouth,” says Noodles of the Huntington Beach urchins, who Dexter would later sign to his own label, Nitro. “We’d take turns in who would headline the show. We played with Agnostic Front one time in San Bernardino. We played with DI and TSOL on their reunion tour in 1989.”

Now that The Offspring are travelling the world in buses and staying at fancy-schmancy hotels, they remember the early days with fond nostalgia. I remind Noodles of the time when The Offspring played at a mutual friend’s house up on Palos Verdes Peninsula – a middle class suburb between LA’s South Bay and Orange Country – in 1990. Held on St Patrick’s weekend with green-coloured beer provided by the teenage promoter (and held in his parent’s house), the bill went like this: Citizen Fish/Cringer/ Neurosis/Offspring.

“I remember that show!” he laughs. “That was a crazy weekend. We went from that show to playing in Santa Monica with Youth Brigade. We did four gigs in one weekend! We did Gilman Street [legendary San Francisco punk venue] on Friday night, then we played a barn in Santa Barbara on the Saturday afternoon. Before the gig in Palos Verdes on the Sunday,” says Noodles with amazing memory on the highlights of pegging it around Southern California in the early days.

“That was the whole nature of it – going by the seat of your pants and just rolling with it,” reflects Dexter. “That what made it so much fun – it was an adventure. You never knew where you were gonna play or who you were gonna play for.”

Like so many other bands, The Offspring took the DIY ethic out onto the road within their first US tour. “We did it in the back of my pick-up truck,” says Dexter. “I had this 1979 Toyota pick-up. Really beat-up. Didn’t run very well. It had this grandpa fisherman camper shell on the back of it. So we put all of us – and one roadie – plus all our equipment in the back of this truck. We did a tour all the way across the country from LA across to the east coast and back for three and a half weeks.”

With one cramped pick-up to sleep in, the guys would take desperate measures to get a good night’s sleep. “Usually we would beg on stage and ask ‘is there anybody here who can put us up tonight?” laughs Dexter. “And usually people were really nice so we’d get to sleep on people’s floors.”

“Once when we were playing in Berkeley we drank beers til we passed out in the van, which was parked by a school,” adds Noodles. “The cops would come along in the morning and wake us up.”

Making it all the way to the east coast, the band plays venues in the backass of nowhere – with some scary results. “There was this one place we played in North Carolina that was just like a pool hall,” says Dexter. “The promoter guy said we could stay there so we slept on the pool tables. The whole place was a bit shady because at about five in the morning the guy would be up and blaring the jukebox. People would be coming in and out all night. I think he was dealing drugs in the back at the same time.”

It wasn’t all fun on the road. Being a relatively unknown band and playing in unlicensed venues like so many punk venues in the States, there’s always an element of danger to proceedings. “People would be crammed into tiny spaces with no fire escapes and one small door,” says Dexter. “Then the police would turn up to break up the shows, making it even more dangerous as people start to panic.

“Once we played this show in Prague, Czechoslovakia,” he says. “We played this underground club that was down four flights of stairs into the ground then it opens up into this cave that holds 400 people and the only way out is that one tiny staircase that goes all the way up. And we’re playing at the very back and you know that if anything happens that it’s all over and there’s no way you’re gonna get out.”

“Once Noodles was stabbed at a show in the early 90s,” Dexter reveals. We were playing a show with Final Conflict [hardcore LA anarcho-punks]. Some skinheads turned up to mess up their show – we were playing right before them. They tried to break in and the people on the door put up a table as a barricade that the skinheads were trying to get over. Noodles, being the pacifist he is, tried to get in between and mellow everything out. This skinhead jumped over the table and punched him in the arm. Noodles was like, ‘God, that really hurt – for a punch!’ Then he looked down and his jacket was covered in blood and it turned out that the guy had punched him with a knife in between the knuckles.”

After their second album, Ignition , in 1992, The Offspring took off on that first European tour. To their surprise, they realised they’d created an equally big fanbase outside of the US as well as at home. But again, the sleeping arrangements weren’t ideal. “We slept on NOFX’s bus and really messed it up,” laughs Noodles. “There only enough bunks for three of us,” says Dexter. “So we had to take turns sleeping on the floor in the aisle every night. But it was a great tour: 31 shows in 35 days across Europe. Those trips were tough to manage and gruelling. We did five shows in the UK that went really well. That made us really fond of the UK ‘cos we always have a great shows and a good time there,” says Dexter, ever the diplomat.

The year later, Smash was unleashed on a nation of unsuspecting music fans, still groggy from the stale and wheezing gasp of the decrepit grunge era. The release date of The Offspring’s third album was April 8, 1994. The very same day Kurt Cobain’s body was discovered and he was pronounced dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Grunge was officially dead and disaffection had a new soundtrack. This time it wasn’t a pessimistic dirge, but sunny, uplifting Californian power pop-punk. Bored by the media circus of Britpop, UK kids snapped up Smash as well. Worldwide sales quickly reached 11 million. The Offspring had arrived.

It was a shock to the system for The Offspring with the obvious benefits – but downsides too. “We were on tour with Smash back in 1994’,” says Noodles, trying to pinpoint a time when they realised they were hitting the big time. “We were drinking beer outside. We got a call from Epitaph and they told us that Smash had just gone platinum [one million US sales]. It was a weird feeling. I guess it was good, but it’s a life-changing thing.”

“We were on tour in Europe and they sent us a rough cut of the video for Self Esteem ,” says Dexter. “It just looked it was gonna work. Even the guy who was doing the t-shirt stall for us was like, ‘you guys are gonna be stars!’ There was something about that moment when it felt like things were starting to go.

“It was exciting – but scary at the same time. When you’re struggling, it’s actually kinda nice not to be noticed in a lot of ways. As things accelerate, in a lot ways it’s great -– don’t get me wrong, I’m not complaining – but there’s an increase in bad attention as well. Things are looked at a lot more critically. You have a lot of people in other bands who hate you because they don’t like the music or they’re jealous.”

Success certainly has it downsides and that was the tour when Noodles starting drinking to excess. “Way more than anybody,” as he puts it. Especially when he found out that his girlfriend back home was cheating on him while he was out on the road. “But then we played some great shows,” says Noodles, looking on the bright side, as ever. “The audiences were wild.”

“You have to develop a thick skin,” says Dexter. “If I see that there’s a review of an Offspring record inside a magazine, I won’t even read it. Even if it’s good, I won’t read it because of the nature of critical writing is that there’s always gonna be a jab in there.

“Also, you lose a certain amount of your privacy. I was driving home from somewhere two days ago. I pulled into the parking lot of a liquor store on the way home and a car pulled up next to me. As I was walking into the store, I hear ‘excuse me!’ It was a mom and her 10-year-old son. She goes, ‘my son recognised you in the car so we followed you until you stopped, can we have your autograph?’. It was amazing that these people fucking followed me!”

So, with the success of Smash , did The Offspring make Epitaph big, or vice-versa? “I think it’s a little bit of both,” says Noodles defensively. “You’re opening up a can of worms there.” The Offspring’s signing to the Sony-owned Columbia may have sacrificed friends at Epitaph Records HQ – not to mention in the underground scene. But Noodles maintains they were already under criticism from the punk police when they were still on Epitaph.

Epitaph subsequently became so successful that it’s grown to such proportions that it now has subsidiaries of its own – like Rancid’s Hellcat Records. Fanzines and underground punk mags like MaximumRockNRoll – the holy bible of the US punk scene – stopped taking ads from Epitaph as they were no longer considered an underground punk label.

Unbelievably, people would picket Offspring’s gigs, even when they were touring for Smash . “We’d go out and talk to these kids,” says Noodles. “We’d say ‘what do you guys think of bands like TSOL? Crass?’ They hadn’t even heard of them.

“We had a friend who worked at a record store,” he says. “Kids would come in and buy like Smash or Dookie , then a week later they’d come in and buy Operation Ivy and Bad Religion. Then the next week they’re coming in and getting Crass or Conflict. Then our friend would go, ‘I remember the first time you came in here and bought Offspring and Green Day’. And they’d be like, ‘ah, Offspring and Green Day suck!’ But then it’s bands like us and Green Day who sparked their original interest in the scene.”

But has that scene peaked? Has it burnt itself out over the past 10 years? “I think there’s way more punk bands still playing today than there ever was,” says Noodles. “I think the scene’s really solid because of what’s going on in the mainstream. It all reminds me of what was going on in Gilman Street 10 years ago.

“But those bands like Pennywise and Guttermouth – they’re doing well. I love those bands. They’re some of my favourite bands today. I think it’s good that there’s competition. And we all know we’re the better band anyway,” jokes Noodles.

All the same, isn’t it strange that the Offspring have got huge when bands like Guttermouth and Pennywise – both who have been playing for as long – are still relatively unknown by comparison? “I think it’s stranger that bands like Ramones never got the amount of attention that we have,” says Noodles of his punk rock idols, speaking shortly before the tragic death of Joey Ramone. “Iggy Pop as well – he never got the attention we had.”

That amount of attention came to a head when The Offspring were once scheduled to play with Ramones in Europe – following them on stage. “We weren’t comfortable with that,” says Noodles. “They’re huge, they’re legendary – they should be on after us, headlining the show.”

After a chat with Joey and the boys, who maintained that The Offspring were huge and the skinny leather-clad punkers didn’t want to go on after, the Offspring relented. “They were really cool about it,” remembers Noodles. “They’re such a great band.”

Before long, the task of following up Smash came about. No mean feat, as Dexter recalls. “Everyone was saying ‘look out for the sophomore slump’ so you’re half expecting it,” he says of the band’s fourth album and Columbia debut, Ixnay On The Hombre . “The other thing is, you can’t really expect another record to sell as Smash does because that’s a once-in-a-lifetime thing.”

“How many musicians get to have a record as do as well as Smash ? Not many,” adds Noodles. “So we counted ourselves lucky to have something that’s done as well as that one record. We still got to go out and tour for 15 months off the back of it,” he says. “Let’s see, Ixnay ? Only did, around, three million? No good, right?” jokes Noodles, taking a pop at the critics who lambasted Ixnay when it came out for not living up to their high expectations of Smash . “But we redeemed ourselves in the eyes of the record labels with Americana ,” says Noodles.

“Luckily for us it was twice in a lifetime thing because Americana did really well,” says Dexter. We also knew that in order to have a life after Smash , we couldn’t just repeat what was on it, we had to expand the horizons of the band. I wasn’t terribly surprised.

“For the real fans, it’s inversely proportional. The worse a record does, that’s the one that the diehard fans like the most. People come up to me all the time and say ‘I hate your most popular song but I like the ones that only me and my friends know about!’”

With the release of Conspiracy Of One , The Offspring pulled something even more special out of the bag by giving away $1 million of their own cash as a promotion. Everyone who downloaded the single Original Prankster from their website was entered into the prize draw.

“We wanted to give away something of our own to celebrate having the new record out and give something back to the fans,” says Noodles. “I thought giving away a million dollars would fuck that kid up! The winner was a 14-year-old girl from Atlanta. We weren’t even her favourite band!” he shouts. “We were her second favourite band and Slipknot were her favourite! And she’s gone! Nobody knows what’s actually happened to her. Maybe she’s run away with Slipknot…”

So what’s next? The Offspring still have one album left to fulfill their contract with Columbia. But what’ll happen after that? After all, they’ve all got families and let’s face it, they’re not the spring chickens they once were… “I can’t see us not getting together and making music,” says Noodles. “I know Dexter is the same. Not sure about Greg…” says Noodles, on the wind-up again. “No, Greg just gets tired of touring, but he’s still into it. We’ve all known each other since childhood and we all get one really well.”

The Offspring all still live in their native South LA homestead of Orange County. But in way bigger houses than you used to, right? “Yeah,” admits Noodles, laughing. “But none of us live in mansions or gated communities or anything like that.”

Seems like The Offspring have mellowed somewhat though. Especially since when they’d write political and social comments on their self-titled debut and Ignition like Kill The President and LAPD . Are The Offspring still angry or have they been swallowed by the Orange County conservatism they were originally kicking against?

“I don’t think we have,” says Noodles. “I still love that first record. And I love the fact that we still have a president that I hate.”

The Offspring are on tour now . They play three UK dates with Bad Religion from June 19.

Eagles: The Long Goodbye 2024 European Tour: How To Get Tickets

by Em Casalena March 6, 2024, 5:10 pm

If you’re a diehard Eagles fan and live in the United Kingdom or the Netherlands, you’re in luck this year. The famed American rockers recently announced a residency tour that is slated to start in May of this year, and it could very well be their last time in either country.

Videos by American Songwriter

The Long Goodbye Tour is being promoted as the band’s final tour, so this is definitely not a residency to miss, since this could be the last time the band will perform in the UK and the Netherlands. Supporting the residency are American rock band and fellow Hall of Fame musicians Steely Dan.

The residency will start on May 31 in Manchester, United Kingdom at the Co-Op Live Arena. The residency will continue there on June 1, June 4, June 7, and June 8. It’s expected to wrap up on June 13 in Arnhem, Netherlands at the GelreDome. An additional final date in the Netherlands on June 15 will also be available for presale soon.

The Long Goodbye Tour started back in September of 2023 in the United States. Since then, the band has continued touring well into 2024, with additional tour dates announced in the US and Canada.

In a press release for the tour that was posted last July, the band released a statement on the upcoming tour and a look back on their 52-year career.

“The Eagles have had a miraculous 52-year odyssey, performing for people all over the globe; keeping the music alive in the face of tragic losses, upheavals and setbacks of many kinds,” said the announcement , “[..] Our long run has lasted far longer than any of us ever dreamed. But, everything has its time, and the time has come for us to close the circle. […] We want to give all our fans a chance to see us on this final round.”

How To Get Your Tickets

It’s always sad to see a band retire for touring, but this is all the more reason to get your hands on tickets to the UK or Netherlands shows ASAP. Luckily, buying tickets for the European residency is super easy. Live Nation is the official ticketing platform for this tour, so you’ll be able to purchase general admission and VIP tickets through Ticketmaster .

If your chosen tour date is sold out by the time you’re ready to buy tickets, you might have better luck with Viagogo . This platform is backed by the FanProtect Guarantee, so you won’t have to sweat about potential scams or fake passes.

The Eagles started back in 1971 and rose through the ranks to be one of the most defining rock bands of the 1970s. Their music is beloved for good reason, seamlessly blending rock, folk, and country styling together. The band’s debut album and its hit song “Take It Easy” are what catapulted them to fame, as well as their 1976 album Hotel California .

You’d think with over 50 years under their belt, their recent live performances would leave fans wanting. Luckily, the band’s still got it. If the nostalgic atmosphere doesn’t take your breath away, the band’s incredible and time-enduring musicianship will. Expect a great medley of the hits from this final tour!

This is likely going to be the Eagles’ very last tour, so don’t miss out on the chance to see them in the UK and the Netherlands. Get your tickets quickly before they sell out!

French Lawmakers Enshrine Access to Abortion in Constitution

Legislators passed an amendment giving women the “guaranteed freedom” to end their pregnancies, which experts called a global first.

By Catherine Porter

Reporting from Versailles

French legislators on Monday voted to explicitly enshrine access to abortion in the Constitution, making their country the first in the world to do so.

Acutely aware that they were breaking historical ground from the grand assembly room inside Versailles Palace, the politicians delivered impassioned speeches about women’s rights around the world, paid homage to the courageous Frenchwomen who had fought for abortion rights when it was illegal and leaped up time and again to offer standing ovations.

“We are sending the message to all women: Your body belongs to you and no one has the right to control it in your stead,” Prime Minister Gabriel Attal said, before the gathered lawmakers voted 780-72 for the amendment.

The amendment declares abortion to be a “guaranteed freedom,” overseen by Parliament’s laws. That means future governments will not be able to “drastically modify” the current laws funding abortion for women who seek one, up to 14 weeks into their pregnancies, according to the French justice minister, Éric Dupond-Moretti.

Amending the Constitution is not without precedent in France; the current Constitution has been modified over 20 times since it was adopted in 1958. But it is rare. Lawmakers last amended it in 2008.

The motivation for the latest change was the decision by the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Wade in 2022, an issue raised repeatedly by legislators. But the move also reflects the widespread support for abortion in France, and a successful campaign by a coalition of feminist activists and lawmakers from multiple parties.

“France is showing the right to abortion is no longer an option, it’s a condition of our democracy,” said Mélanie Vogel, a Green Party senator and major force behind the bill.

the offspring tour europe

Ms. Vogel said in an interview, “I want to send a message to feminists outside of France. Everyone told me a year ago it was impossible.” She added: “Nothing is impossible when you mobilize society.”

The Vatican and the French Conference of Bishops opposed the amendment , as did anti-abortion activist groups. But in France, a country where calls to protest regularly bring hundreds of thousands to the streets, opposition was notably scarce.

Instead, hundreds of Parisians gathered Monday afternoon in Trocadéro Square to watch the vote broadcast on a large screen. “We hope it guarantees our rights, especially in the face of the terrifying threat of the extreme right,” said Yanna Antigny-Fernandes, 21, moments before the final count was declared, to the sound of celebratory screams and Beyoncé’s “Run the World (Girls).”

“It’s Simone de Beauvoir who said that women’s rights were the first freedoms to be attacked.”

With the vote, France became the first country in the world to explicitly write access to abortion into its Constitution, according to five constitutional experts.

“It’s not stating reproductive choices or the right to have children; it’s a very different language when you say access to abortion,” said Anna Sledzinska-Simon, a professor of comparative constitutions and human rights law at the University of Wroclaw in Poland. “The French are calling it by its name — that’s crucial.”

Constitutional experts say the amendment broadens the mold of France’s fundamental text, written by men for men.

“It’s a big milestone, because it goes to the very foundation of this idea that constitutions were about men’s autonomy,” said Ruth Rubio-Marín, author of a book on gender and constitutions , noting that historically women were only defined as “breeders and caretakers.”

Other constitutions, like Ecuador’s, have been broadened to include things like support for caregiving and the equal division of domestic work. But they often remain aspirational, said Ms. Rubio-Marín, who teaches constitutional law at the University of Seville in Spain.

“That this is happening in the Old World, in an established democracy where the constitution is taken seriously — in that way, it’s historic,” she said.

The fight for legal abortion in France burst into public view in 1971, when 343 Frenchwomen signed a manifesto written by the French feminist Simone de Beauvoir declaring that they had undertaken clandestine, illegal abortions and demanding that the law change.

Four years later, a female minister, Simone Veil , successfully pushed through a temporary law decriminalizing abortions.

Throughout Monday’s special legislative session, lawmakers paid tribute to Ms. Veil, as well as Gisèle Halimi , the former lawyer whose defense of a 16-year-old student who had endured an illegal abortion after having been raped led to her acquittal in 1972.

“We have followed in your footsteps and like you, we succeeded,” said Senator Laurence Rossignol, a former women’s rights minister. She added that French feminists would continue to fight internationally against “those who resist,” citing politicians including Donald J. Trump and President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia.

“Liberty, equality, fraternity,” she said, citing France’s national motto. “And, if I could add, sorority.”

Over the past five decades, the law assuring abortion rights has continually been expanded, to the point that it is now considered among the most liberal in Europe. It includes the right to fully funded abortions for women and minors up to the 14th week of pregnancy upon request, with no waiting period or required counseling sessions.

Later abortions are permitted if the pregnancy is deemed a risk to the woman’s physical or psychological health or if the fetus presents certain anomalies.

After the Covid pandemic hit, France quickly ensured that women seeking abortions could receive medical consultations virtually, said Laura Rahm, a researcher at Central European University, in Vienna, who examined access to abortion in France for a five-year European study .

“A system always shines or cracks when it’s put under pressure,” she said. The French system had clearly shone, she said.

Still, studies show that 17 percent of women travel outside their home regions — known as departments in France — for abortion services, sometimes because of a growing shortage of medical facilities locally .

While the law states that women should have a choice of medical or surgical abortions, in practice that’s often not the case, said Sarah Durocher, national co-president of Le Planning Familial, a French equivalent of Planned Parenthood.

Putting the “guaranteed freedom” to have an abortion in the Constitution means that will have to change, she said.

“This will give birth to other things,” said Ms. Durocher, noting that 130 centers offering abortion had closed in France over the past decade. “For example, real policies so there is effective access to abortion.”

Despite the new amendment, French feminists say France remains a male-dominated society where sexism persists . Settling into her perch overseeing the session as the president of the National Assembly, Yaël Braun-Pivet noted that she was the first woman in French history to preside over such a gathering, a congress of both houses of Parliament.

But unlike in the United States, the issue of abortion in France is not politically charged or highly divisive. Instead, most French people believe abortion is a basic public health service and a woman’s right. A recent 29-country survey showed France with the second-highest support for legalized abortion in the world, after Sweden.

But attempts to introduce abortion into the Constitution had failed before the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade . The decision drove French lawmakers to safeguard the practice, presenting multiple bills within months. Last year, the French government introduced its own bill seeking to enshrine it in the Constitution.

Just last week, members of a coalition of lawmakers and feminist organizations feared that the Senate, dominated by conservatives, might derail the amendment, but it passed.

“We managed to create this environment, where if you voted against this change, it meant you wanted to maintain the right as a legislator to potentially prohibit abortion in the future,” said Ms. Vogel. “So if you are not against abortion, you had no reason not to vote in favor of it.”

She added, “That narrative penetrated society.”

Syme, Brown share lead at SDC Championship on the European tour. They are 2 shots clear of chasers

EASTERN CAPE, South Africa — Connor Syme of Scotland and Daniel Brown of England share the lead and are two shots clear of the chasers heading into the final round of the SDC Championship on the European tour.

Brown, who led after 36 holes in South Africa, shot an even-par 72 and was joined at the top of the leaderboard on 11 under overall by Syme, who had seven birdies in a 67 — the third lowest score of the third round on Saturday.

The 141st-ranked Syme has never won a European tour event — he has three second-place finishes, however — while Brown’s sole victory was at the ISPS Handa World Invitational last year.

Three players are tied for third place: Andy Sullivan of England (66), Robin Williams of South Africa (71) and James Nicholas of the United States (70). Nicholas is ranked No. 1,129.
