This epic new cruise itinerary will hit more destinations than you thought possible

Holland America is going big with its latest around-the-world cruise.

The Seattle-based line on Monday revealed plans for a globe-circling voyage in 2026 lasting 132 days — as many as 19 days longer than other around-the-world sailings it's offered in recent years.

Kicking off in Fort Lauderdale on Jan. 4, 2026, the Grand World Voyage, as the line is calling it, will include visits to all seven continents — a relative rarity for world cruises. It'll also include extensive time in South America and Northern Europe — which is tough to pull off logistically on an around-the-world cruise.

For more cruise news, guides and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

"This one is ambitious in the sense that we're really stretching that line ... all the way down the east coast of South America to Antarctica and providing that experience and then working our way kind of diagonally back up to the Mediterranean and Northern Europe," Paul Grigsby, Holland America's vice president for deployment and itinerary planning, told TPG in an exclusive interview in advance of the announcement.

Grigsby noted that an around-the-world cruise the line offered in 2019 included stops in Northern Europe but not an extensive exploration of South America. To get both regions into the 2026 itinerary, Grigsby's team had to make the sailing considerably longer than the 2019 sailing. The 2019 sailing was just 113 days in length.

"I think we're more comfortable now with longer cruises," Grigsby noted.

In the last couple of years, Holland America has been doubling down on longer sailings , something for which the line has long been known. The line's efforts to add more longer sailings have included the addition of a new series of so-called Legendary Voyages that focus on a single region and range from 25 to 59 nights in length.

The newly announced world cruise will feature stops in 47 ports in 39 countries in all — a hefty number for a world cruise offered by any line.

Around the world from Fort Lauderdale

As is often the case with Holland America's around-the-world cruises, the just-announced 2026 sailing will take place on the 1,432-passenger Volendam, one of the smallest Holland America vessels.

After starting in Fort Lauderdale, Volendam will first head southward to Barbados in the Caribbean before working its way down the east coast of South America toward Antarctica. Stops in South America will include Devil's Island in French Guiana; Belem, Recife and Rio de Janeiro in Brazil; Punta del Este and Montevideo in Uruguay; Buenos Aires, Argentina; and the Falkland Islands.

three day cruise out of fort lauderdale

From the Falklands, Volendam will continue southward to Antarctica for a multiday visit before cruising along the coast of Chile and into the Chilean fjords. It'll then cross the Pacific to French Polynesia, New Zealand and Australia on a course that will take it past the rarely visited destinations of Easter Island and Pitcairn Island.

Easter Island and the islands of French Polynesia have ranked high in surveys from Grigsby's itinerary planning team that asked past passengers where they want to go, according to Grigsby.

In particular, Easter Island is a "bucket list destination" for many Holland America regulars, and the South Pacific is "one of the top-rated regions," he said.

Australia also is popular with Holland America passengers, which prompted Grigsby's team to work in stops in the Australian ports of Sydney, Townsville, Cairns and Darwin. Both the Townsville and Cairns stops allow for excursions to Australia's Great Barrier Reef.

"I don't think I would ever not have Australia and New Zealand in a world cruise," Grigsby said. "It always rates high among our guests."

From Australia, Volendam will head to Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, Sri Lanka and the Maldives before quickly transiting through the Red Sea and the Suez Canal to Europe.

R elated: Holland America unveils another epic cruise — this time with a twist

In contrast to many world cruises of the past, stops in the Middle East have been mostly left off the schedule, with the exception of calls in Safaga and Alexandria in Egypt to allow for visits to the ancient Egyptian sites of Luxor along the Nile and the Great Pyramids near Cairo. That's in part because of waning interest in the region among world travelers due to the recent outbreak of war in Gaza and attacks on shipping in the Red Sea.

"I don't think you'd be surprised to know that the area around Dubai (in the Persian Gulf) and Oman is of less interest to our guests than it has been in the past," Grigsby noted. "That's why you find a fairly speedy transit through the Red Sea and Suez Canal."

Once in Europe, Volendam will stop in a wide range of destinations, including the Mediterranean ports of Piraeus, Greece (the port for Athens); Civitavecchia (the port for Rome) and Naples in Italy; and Alicante, Spain.

More northerly ports will include Oslo, Norway, and Copenhagen, Denmark.

Among the more unusual stops in Europe will be Bordeaux, France, which is on the Garonne River in southwestern France. It's a port that is only accessible to smaller cruise vessels such as Volendam.

The voyage will visit 39 countries in all, with stops at 47 ports.

Nine of the calls will be overnight, allowing for more in-depth touring. These overnight calls include stops in Rio de Janeiro, Sydney, Safaga, Alexandria and Lisbon.

The longer stays are in places where Holland America's past passengers have said they wanted longer stays, Grigsby said, citing data from an extensive survey of more than 30,000 past passengers.

Early booking bonus

Fares for the newly announced Grand World Voyage won't be announced until May, when the sailing goes on sale to the general public. But Holland America on Monday said it would offer an early booking bonus of up to $2,000 per person in onboard credit and a free Wi-Fi Surf package to those who book the sailing early. The company didn't specify a deadline for getting the bonus.

In addition, passengers who pay for the sailing in full will get a 3% discount on their fares.

Additional perks for passengers who book early will include a $500-per-person air credit when booking air through Holland America's Flight Ease program and complimentary round-trip airport transfers to and from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL).

Passengers also will get complimentary luggage delivery service to and from the Fort Lauderdale airport, prepaid gratuities (called "crew appreciation" fees at Holland America) and included laundry and dry cleaning service when booking certain cabin categories.

While the voyage won't be available to book until May, would-be passengers can reserve a spot now through May by making a future cruise request from Holland America's World Cruise Reservations team at 800-522-3399 or through their travel adviser.

Passengers aboard the Silversea Silver Nova have been informed, more than a week in advance, that their disembarkation time in Fort Lauderdale would be delayed by four hours. The reason offered for this change was a photo opportunity with the Royal Caribbean Icon of the Seas and the Celebrity Ascent two days before disembarkation.

All ships are from the three brands that are part of the Royal Caribbean Group , and a course change was necessary for the Silver Nova to meet the other ships.

Silversea cruise ship Silver Nova

The announcement of the change called it a “slight” delay and promised compensation for passengers who incurred additional expenses. Affected guests could submit receipts by email and, if approved, be refunded within 30 days.

Four Hours Is Not ‘Slight’

Disembarkation times are usually quite precise due to the logistics of preparing the ship for new guests and getting those guests settled prior to sailing. Depending on the port location and its distance from the airport, guests usually feel safe booking flights four to five hours after their planned arrival. This allows for disembarkation, luggage retrieval, customs and immigration if needed, transit to the airport, and passing through airline check-in and security.

The Royal Caribbean Blog suggests that in the U.S., booking flights at 11AM is possible but suggests noon or later is “absolutely achievable.”

Best High-Yield Savings Accounts Of 2024

Best 5% interest savings accounts of 2024.

Standard advice is to arrive two hours early for domestic flights and three hours for international. Hence, with an 11:00AM arrival time at the port, it seems likely that the majority of passengers flying out of Fort Lauderdale or Miami airports will find it necessary to reschedule their flights. Only those who booked flights late in the afternoon would be safe. Silversea suggests an earliest flight time of five PM.

Those rebooking flights may find that a non-stop flight with a carefully selected aisle seat is no longer an option.

Even those not heading for an airport after arrival might need to adjust times for pickup at the port, pet care arrangements, etc.

With the tight timing to prepare the ship for new guests, it’s likely that embarkation time for outbound cruisers will also be delayed for several hours.

Passengers Not Happy

Cruise ship passengers, particularly experienced ones, generally take itinerary changes in stride. Weather is the most common cause for missed or changed ports. There are also less common occurrences like medical emergencies, mechanical issues, and responding to distress calls. Recently, cruise itineraries in the Middle East have been rerouted to avoid areas considered dangerous.

Despite the inevitability of itinerary changes, it’s likely that no passenger on the Silver Nova has ever had their plans disrupted by a corporate photo shoot. While meeting two other cruise ships while drones buzz around shooting photos and videos might be a unique experience, many passengers don’t think it’s worth the inconvenience of rebooking long-established flights and changing other plans.

Complaints on message boards like Cruise Critic show the unrest. One poster affected by the change notes, “This has to be one of the stupidest things I have ever seen a cruise line do! Do they really think all of us should be trying to change flights/trains/drivers at the very last minute... during one of the busiest times of the year in Florida? I am appalled that a so called luxury line would put their passengers through this nonsense for a photo op!”

Comments on private boards were even less generous, with suggestions of concerted action by affected passengers.

Impact On Brand

Silversea is a luxury cruise brand, and its “Credo” begins with, “We make the satisfaction of our guests our first priority...”

Clearly, the Silver Nova guests were not the first priority in this decision. Nobody asked them if they minded changing their travel plans to enable the planned meetup of ships. Terming the delay “slight” shows a major lack of empathy with the guests whose travel plans would be disrupted by the change.

Brand leadership expert Denise Yohn states , “Brand power comes from keeping – not only making – promises.” All too often companies that claim to put the customer at the center of all decisions end up acting in ways that are anything but customer-centric.

To be fair to Silversea, it’s likely this decision came down from corporate leaders at RCCL. The Silversea brand is the group’s luxury brand and has little to gain from being associated with the other ships. One can only imagine the reaction of the ship’s captain, hotel manager and other leadership when they learned that their well-orchestrated disembarkation, preparation, and embarkation plans would be thrown into disarray. (Silversea had not responded to a request for comment at time of publication.)

Perhaps inconveniencing a mere 700 passengers (compared to a combined 10,000+) on the other two ships was considered an acceptable risk with comparatively small financial impact.

Because many passengers have already adjusted their plans, it is unlikely that Silversea will reverse course on participating in the photo shoot. At this point, the best they can do is to be especially helpful and accommodating to all affected passengers, even those who made their own travel arrangements.

three day cruise out of fort lauderdale

ASSOCIATED PRESS / 2020

The Symphony of the Seas cruise ship is shown docked at PortMiami, in Miami. A 34-year-old Royal Caribbean cruise employee is accused of hiding cameras inside bathrooms of passenger cabins to spy on guests. Arvin Joseph Mirasol was arrested Sunday, March 3, on federal charges of production and possession of child pornography after the Symphony of the Seas arrived at Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. >> A Royal Caribbean cruise employee is accused of hiding cameras inside bathrooms of passenger cabins to spy on guests, including underage girls.

Arvin Joseph Mirasol, 34, was arrested Sunday on federal charges of production and possession of child sexual abuse material after the Symphony of the Seas arrived in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, according to a probable cause affidavit filed in the U.S. District Court of Florida. He also faces six counts of voyeurism in state court.

A guest staying in a cabin where Mirasol was an attendant found a camera in the bathroom Feb. 25. It was “affixed to the counter underneath the sink,” according to the affidavit. She reported it to ship officials, who sent security to the room to investigate.

Mirasol, who is a citizen of the Philippines, was detained on the ship until March 3, when it docked in Fort Lauderdale. He was questioned by agents from Homeland Security, Customs and Border Protection and the Broward Sheriff’s Office.

Agents discovered “numerous videos of naked females” as well as images of child sexual abuse while looking at his phone, an SD card and USB stick, the affidavit said. One of the videos showed Mirasol installing a camera in a guest cabin’s bathroom.

In one five-minute video, a 10-year-old girl entered the bathroom, removed her clothes and got into the shower, the affidavit said.

Mirasol told investigators he had been placing cameras in bathrooms since he began working on the ship in December.

“I want to control it, but I can’t,” he told investigators, according to the affidavit. He admitted he knew it was illegal to film underage girls. Agents asked him how he chose where to put the cameras. “If I like who is in that room, I place it,” he told them.

In addition to the hidden cameras, Mirasol told agents he went into rooms while guests were taking showers and hid under the bed. He would then record them getting dressed, according to the affidavit.

Royal Caribbean said in a statement that the company has fired Mirasol and is cooperating with the investigation.

“We have zero tolerance for this unacceptable behavior,” the statement said.

Mirasol is represented by Robert Berube of the federal public defender’s office, who said in an email that he would not comment on the case. Mirasol remained in the Broward County Jail on Wednesday.
