Thailand travel reviews

Thailand tour photos from our travellers, recommended tours, the best ways to pay for services in thailand.

Thailand's local currency is the Thai Baht. The best way to carry your money is in debit cards, withdrawing cash in local currencies from ATM machines. ATMs are found throughout Thailand and will generally accept cards on the Visa and Mastercard networks. It is a great idea to travel with both a Visa and Mastercard if at all possible in case of loss or problems with one card, you will have a back up. If you are bringing US Dollars, please make sure that the notes are new and in good condition. Notes older than 2003, or with any tears or blemishes may not be accepted. Be fussy with your bank when buying cash!

Tips on tips

Some reasonable suggestions on how to tip the staff

It is customary in Asia to tip service providers such as waiters, at approximately 10%, depending on the service.

Tour guides / Drivers

$ 1.5 to $ 3.5.

Recommendations for tipping drivers and local guides would range from $1.5-$3.5 USD per person per day depending on the quality and length of the service

G Adventures CEO

$ 20 to $ 25.

The amount is entirely a personal preference, however as a guideline $20-25 USD per person, per week can be used.

Packing for Thailand

What you need to bring depends on the trip you have chosen and the countries or regions you are planning to visit. We suggest that you pack as lightly as possible as your are expected to carry your own luggage. As a rule we try not to have to walk more than 15-20 minutes with your bags which is why we recommend keeping the weight of your bags between 10-15kg/22-30lb. Suitcases are not recommended for G Adventures trips! Most travellers carry a backpack or rolling bag of small to medium size (no XXL ones please!) as they need to fit under the beds when travelling on sleeper trains. You will also need a day pack/bag to carry water, cameras and other electronics like iPods and mobile phones. If your trip involves overnights in homestays, villages or camping then you usually have the opportunity to rent sleeping bags if need be instead of bringing them with you.

Electricity and power supplies in Thailand

The entire country of Thailand runs on 220-volt currents and uses five types of electrical outlets — type A, B, C, F and O. Type A: mainly used in North and Central America, China and Japan. This socket only works with plug A. Type B: like type A but with an extra prong for grounding. This socket also works with plug A. Type C: also known as the standard "Euro" plug. This socket also works with plug E and plug F. Type F: also known as "Schuko". This socket also works with plug C and plug E. Type O: this type is unique to Thailand but it also works with plug C, plug E and plug F.

The official language of Thailand is Thai. While it may feel awkward at first, attempting the local language goes a long way when navigating a city and interacting with people. Practice these basic phrases to get started:

  • Hello: Sawasdeeka (female) / Sawasdeekrub (male)
  • Goodbye: La korn
  • Please: Karuna (kah-roo-nah)
  • Thank you: Khob khun ka (female) / Khob khun krub (male)
  • Pardon me: Kor thod
  • No: Mai chai
  • Cheers (for drinking): Mod kaew

Thailand is tropical and extremely historic. What more could you want?! As you prepare to spend time in this warm and glittering destination, here are some expert tips to help you understand the ins and outs of Asia, and feel like a true local:

  • Head and toes: In Thailand, the head is considered a sacred body part, and the feet are the least. Out of respect, never touch anyone in the head and never point at anything with your feet.
  • Begging: You may see monks begging, especially in busy cities like Bangkok. However, Monks are not allowed to beg for money or food so if you see this, it means this person is posing as a monk.
  • Shoes: You will likely be asked to remove your shoes in certain homes, restaurants, or temples. It is a rule of etiquette to abide by this request.
  • Street Food: It’s safe, and it’s delicious! Try to stick with vendors that have a long line to make sure you’re getting the best of the best.
  • Nightlife: From Bangkok to the beaches, you’re sure to find some fun nightlife in Thailand. While Thailand is very safe, we still recommend using the buddy system, and only using licensed taxis to get around.
  • GrabTaxi: This is basically Thailand’s version of Uber. You can use this app to order a taxi, and it’s a safe and reliable way to get around!
  • Bartering: Especially at the markets, if something doesn’t have a visible price tag you should try to barter! A good starting point is half the cost the merchant suggests.

Food & Drink

Guaranteed to put your town’s local Thai place to shame, prepare to dive into a fusion of ancient tradition and modern practices that is the gastronomical paradise of Thailand. Read on for tips, tricks, and delicacies you must try.

  • Guay Teow : AKA, noodle soup. This is one of the most popular Thai dishes and you can find it almost everywhere.
  • Som Tam : Or spicy papaya salad, som tam hails from Northeastern Thailand and is another popular dish. A classic som tam is usually shredded green papaya, tomatoes, carrots, peanuts, dried shrimp, beans, lime, and pleeenty of chillies.
  • Tom Kha Gai : Similar to tom yum, this is a chicken in coconut soup and offers a lower-spice opportunity to taste all the flavors of tom yum.
  • Laab : A “salad”, but really it’s a mixture of meat or mushroom and mint; NOT recommended for those with low tolerance to spice.
  • Pad Thai : You know this one… When in Rome, right?
  • Pad See Eiw : A thick noodle dish, pad see eiw consists of wide rice noodles stir-fried in dark soy sauce mixed with chicken, pork, or beef plus Chinese broccoli or cabbage.
  • Khao Pad : Fried rice. A fan favorite
  • Panang : Or, Thai curry. This is a bit milder than other curries in Thailand, which is what makes it so popular.
  • Kai Jeow : One of the simpler dishes of Thailand, this is an omelette usually served on rice with sweet chili sauce. A great way to start the day!
  • Kao Niew Ma Muang : Mango and sticky rice. Just the dessert you needed!

Note: Chopsticks are a staple of Asian cuisine and culture. Attempting to use chopsticks instead of western cutlery will earn you some respect with the locals, but be wary of using chopsticks to point at someone, poke at food, or play them like musical instruments - these are all signs of disrespect.

We plan it all. And then some.

Our group trips to Thailand come with everything included. That’s accommodations, flights (unless you wanna book your own), activities, and an expert Tour Director who can help you find spicy noodles that aren’t too spicy.

Thailand Tours & Vacations

Two women talking with their guide next to the buddhas at the WatPho temple

Thailand is an idyllic paradise, where jungle-covered karsts plunge into aquamarine waters and the sand is sugar white.

But no matter how clichéd the fantasy, Thailand delivers in spades. The water around Krabi and Ko Tao really is that deep, cool shade of blue. Phi Phi’s limestone karsts really do look like some alien world. And the food? Let’s just say your local Pad Thai has nothing on Chiang Mai’s street stalls or the floating markets of Amphawa, where little old ladies do things with fish sauce and chili you never thought possible. From the waterfalls of Erawan to a homestay with the hill tribes of the Golden Triangle, these adventures go beyond the tourist traps. Buckle up.

Learn more about Thailand

Best time to visit thailand.

Thailand's climate is generally hot, humid, and at times (like other South East Asian countries) monsoonal. The seasons differ from coast to coast, so depending on which areas you're visiting, the weather can vary.

Thailand's mainland region is great to visit from November to February when the weather is cooler and dryer.

If you are planning on visiting the Gulf Coast (east), avoid the northeast monsoon that brings rain from October to January. For destinations like Phuket on the west side of the peninsula, the best time is November to April to avoid the other monsoon which causes Thailand's wet season from May to October.

Culture and customs

Often considered the epicenter of Buddhism, religion permeates daily life in Thailand. Sprinkled throughout the country are thousands of golden temples, where you’ll find Buddhist monks in orange robes walking the streets. Young men are expected to spend some time as a monk as it bestows honor on their families. Visitors should be respectful of monks and dress modestly when visiting a temple (cover your knees and shoulders and remove your shoes).

Like other Asian nations, the concept of ‘saving face’ is important. This means avoiding conflict or embarrassment in order to preserve social standing, dignity, and honor. Thai people will go out of their way to avoid ‘losing face’. Losing your temper or raising your voice are surefire ways to lose face and can be perceived as volatile or rude.

Eating and drinking

Thai food has everything from spicy dishes packed with chilis to milder coconut-based curries. With street stalls and night markets all over the country, it's really easy to pick up a snack wherever you are in Thailand. On many Intrepid trips, you'll be given the opportunity to have dinner with a local family – this offers a great chance to see how meals are prepared and learn more about the local culture. Go a step further on our 8-day Thailand Read Food Adventure to watch, eat, prepare, and present tasty and traditional Thai cuisine.

Things to try in Thailand

1. Pad Thai (Phat Thai)

A well-known dish but for good reason. This delicious plate of stir-fried rice noodles garnished with peanuts is full of flavor and can be served with fresh prawns, chicken, tofu, or vegetables.

2. Tom Yum (Tom Yam)

Usually prepared with stock, lemongrass, kaffir lime leaves, and chili, this soup is widely available in Thailand and has been popularised around the world.

3. Green curry

One of many curries that Thais do so well. Green curry consists of chicken, Thai eggplant, and chilies bathed in a coconut milk-based sauce.

4. Som tam (green papaya salad)

This northern dish of shredded raw papaya, cherry tomatoes, and green beans is a tantalizing mix of sweet, spicy, and sour flavors.

5. Coconut water

For a super fresh thirst quencher, try coconut water straight from the husk.

6. Tropical fruit

Fruit shakes and fresh fruit juices are widely available from markets and restaurants – make the most of all the tropical fruits of Thailand.

Geography and environment

Sharing borders with South East Asian neighbors  Cambodia ,   Laos ,   Malaysia   , and   Myanmar   (Burma), Thailand's natural environment varies greatly from region to region. From the steamy jungles and misty highlands in the north to the white sand beaches and picturesque islands of the south, Thailand's everchanging landscape has been fascinating and entertaining travelers for centuries.

The capital, Bangkok, is a heaving, urban jungle with skyscrapers, street vendors, markets, cars, tuk-tuks, bicycles, and masses of people all competing for space. Despite this, there are pockets of quiet beauty to be found with parks, temples, and traditional shop fronts scattered throughout the city.

Rural areas in the north are typically quieter, with locals living a more traditional way of life; the frenetic pace of the city giving way to a more slow-paced, agricultural-based lifestyle. Houses are simple, there's more space and less of the modern conveniences. Jungles, rivers, bamboo huts, and teak houses are more commonly seen here, and birds and other animal life are more abundant.

History and government

Early history.

Communities based on agriculture (such as rice growing) inhabited Siam (Thailand) as early as the 6th century. In the following centuries, Siam came under the influence of the Khmer, Dvaravati, and Malay cultures, with some temples and monuments in modern-day Thailand showing evidence of this influence. In the 13th century, the city of Sukhothai in northern Thailand became an important capital. The ruins of the Sukhothai Historical Park (a UNESCO World Heritage site) feature remnants of the royal palace, temples, and other buildings and highlight the artistic and architectural features of the era.

Ayutthaya rose to prominence as the new capital in the 14th century and was considered a powerhouse of South East Asia as one of the most important centers of trade in the world. Enduring many battles, invasions, overthrows, and coups, Ayutthaya's far-reaching trade with other regions ensured a flourishing influence of art, weaponry, religion, and cuisine. Much wealth was generated by this enormous empire, with grand palaces, ornate buildings, and huge temples featured throughout the city. All this came to an end when the Burmese invaded in the 18th century, bringing the kingdom to ruin and resulting in the loss of many artistic and cultural treasures. Despite this, the ruins of the city are still standing, have been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site, and are a great day trip from Bangkok. See the sights of ancient and recent Thai history during a 3 day River Kwai and Ancient Thai Kingdoms tour.

Recent history

Thonburi was established as the capital of Siam by General Taksin in the late 18th century, yet this didn't last long with Taksim being deposed and executed not long after. Bangkok was then named capital by General Chakri, who became Rama I - the first king of the Rama Dynasty.

Over the years, Siam (Thailand) remained the only South East Asian country to remain free from European colonization. In 1932, the Siamese Revolution resulted in a constitutional monarchy being formed, and in 1941, Thailand invaded French Indochina, overpowered the French, and claimed Laos.

In the last thirty years, Thailand has seen political power change hands many times, often due to coups, revolutions, and protests. Despite this, Thailand’s economy continues to grow due to its strong tourist industry. Enduring all this, the much-loved King Rama IX has reigned as the Head of State since 1946 - claiming the title of the longest-reigning monarch in the world and providing Thai people with a stable figure to rely upon.

Enjoy this historical park for yourself during a 10 day Highlights of Thailand tour.

6. Sukhothai

This former capital is a history buff's heaven. Nicknamed the 'Dawn of Happiness', Sukhothai still recalls Siam's golden age with its superb statues, marvelous monuments, and lotus flowers in full bloom. A trip to the night market is a real eye-opener; try everything from fried rice to fried bugs.

Stop by Sukhothai on our 8 day Explore Northern Thailand adventure.

The waters surrounding Krabi are dotted with hundreds of limestone karst islands. Kayakers and rock climbers will love exploring them, while others can travel to the nearby floating villages or just relax on one of the region's perfect beaches.

We've made sure to stop by Krabi on our incredible 28 day Bangkok to Bali adventure - you'll thank us later.

8. Golden Triangle

9. Khao Sok National Park

For a real jungle experience, spend a couple of days in Khao Sok National Park. Thick rainforests, limestone cliffs, waterfalls, and mountains make a wild playground.

Coast through the must-see sights of Phang Nga Bay on our 8 day Phuket Sailing Adventure.

Bustling street markets filled with colorful vendors selling an assortment of goods can be found in small villages and large towns throughout the country. Luxurious, multi-level shopping malls that rival those in European cities are increasingly popping up.

The Chatuchak Weekend Market in Bangkok is perhaps the largest and most extensive market in the world. Here vendors sell everything you can think of, from ceramics to Thai silk to vintage clothing. Bartering is expected at markets and most small vendors. As a rule of thumb, if the price isn’t listed, it’s negotiable. But remember, Thais appreciate friendliness and a sense of humor. The more aggressive you are in trying to get a deal, the less likely you are to get one.

Things to buy in Thailand

  • Vibrant fabric cushions, tablecloths, and hammocks
  • Silver jewelry (look for reputable stores)
  • Handcrafted umbrellas or parasols
  • Thai silk scarves, ties, wraps, and clothing
  • Colorful Celadon ceramics
  • Tailor-made clothing

Festival and events

Loy krathong (festival of lights).

During the 12th lunar month, people across the country gather around lakes, rivers, and canals to symbolically let their worries float away in the most magical way – by releasing colorful lotus-shaped rafts holding candles, incense, and flowers onto the water.

Yee Peng (or Yi Peng)

At the same time that Loy Krathong is taking place, Chiang Mai also celebrates Yee Peng. Religious events, cultural activities, and street parades all mark this Buddhist tradition. But what makes this festival truly spectacular is the release of thousands of sky lanterns that illuminate the sky.

Songkran (Thai New Year)

What happens when New Year’s Day falls during the height of summer? It morphs into a giant water fight. Some towns celebrate just on the day (April 13), while others stretch it out for several days of concerts, ceremonies, and other wet festivities.

Chiang Mai Flower Festival

Flowers are used in ways you never thought imaginable at this colorful three-day event in February. Come for the parade of impressive floral floats, and stay for the tasty Thai street food, music, and performances.

Do I need any vaccinations before visiting Thailand?

No vaccines are required in order to enter Thailand but some are recommended for protection against disease. Visit your doctor or travel clinic for advice and make sure to schedule vaccinations 4-6 weeks before your departure date, as some require time to become effective.

Is Thailand a safe destination for LGBTQIA+ travelers?

As a whole, Thailand is a hassle-free destination for LGBTQI travelers. Bangkok, Pattaya, and Phuket all have fairly prominent gay scenes. Be aware that Thais typically do not engage in public displays of affection, regardless of sexual orientation.

For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting Equaldex or ILGA before you travel.

What's the transport like in Thailand?

Intrepid believes half the fun of experiencing a new country is getting there, and getting around once there! Where possible, Intrepid uses local transport options and traditional modes of transport - which usually carry less of an environmental impact, support small local operators, and are more fun.

Depending on which trip you're on while in Thailand, you may find yourself traveling by Songthaew.

Get to know the locals as you share a ride in these converted pick-up trucks. Snagging a seat on the ‘two benches’ (the literal meaning of songthaew) is a popular way of getting around South East Asia.

See Thailand from the ground level on a Saamlaw, the three-wheeled wonder. Sometimes motorized but usually pedal-powered by a local, it’s a fun way to get from A to B or see a new city's sights.

What's the accommodation like in Thailand?

Traveling with Intrepid is a little bit different. We endeavor to provide travelers with an authentic experience to remember, so we try to keep accommodations as unique and traditional as possible.

When traveling with us in Thailand you may find yourself staying in a Homestay.

Experience friendly Thai hospitality while staying with a local family living a traditional way of life. Make new friends, pick up some local lingo and leave smiling.

The ultimate room with a view - spend the night on a floating bamboo raft house. Enjoy the seclusion, soak up the serenity and leave feeling refreshed and rejuvenated.

Does my trip to Thailand support The Intrepid Foundation?

Yes, all Intrepid trips support the Intrepid Foundation. In fact, we make a donation on behalf of every traveler. Trips to Thailand directly support our foundation partner, EcoThailand Foundation .

EcoThailand Foundation is on a mission to educate and empower local communities, on the tourist Islands of Koh Phangan and Koh Paluay, about environmental issues like climate change, waste management, nature appreciation, conservation and sustainable lifestyles. Donations from our trips help EcoThailand's environmental guardianship education program for children in local state schools.

Intrepid will double the impact by dollar-matching all post-trip donations made to The Intrepid Foundation.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before traveling?

Absolutely. All passengers traveling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

Day 1 - Bangkok bangkok bustle

Welcome to Bangkok, the beating heart of Thailand, where futuristic skyscrapers rub shoulders with ancient temples. After dropping your bags and giving your first sawasdee ka a go (no one said Thai was easy), meet up with your crew and get ready to explore one of the most fun cities on Earth.

We’ll head toward tuk-tuk mad streets to start things off with a foodie tour beneath the neon lights of nearby Chinatown. From steaming bowls of Guay Jub (rolled noodle soup) to succulent roasted duck, prepare for a delicious adventure. The golden rule is to follow the locals—if there's a line, grab a plastic stool and dive in.

After your first taste of Bangkok, head to the Chao Phraya River, which snakes its way through the urban chaos, grab rooftop drinks, and take in the evening glow from the Tetris tower to the gold-roofed Grand Palace. Congrats, you made it to Thailand!

thailand food vendor

Day 2  - Bangkok urban tales

Grab a coffee with the crew before we tour the capital. Bangkok's famous for blending different elements together, and today, we'll see a bit of it all so that by the evening, you'll understand how this 15th-century trading post became the most visited city on Earth.

Kick off the day in the colorful stalls of the Flower Market and discover the spiritual importance of lotus, jasmine, or orchids. From there, we'll head to Little India for an intro workshop into Thailand's sacred khon masks before stopping for lunch and then continuing on to Wat Pho to check out one massive golden Buddha.

In the evening, you'll hop in Bangkok's iconic, colorful tuk-tuks and head out for dinner and drinks with the crew. To round out an action-packed day in the city, check out Khao San Road's chaos and give that world-famous nightlife a go!

Day 3 -  Bangkok, Chiang Mai North Country

After an early breakfast at the hotel, we're heading to the airport and swapping the capital city for lowkey Chiang Mai in the mountains of northern Thailand.

Set between dense jungle and rice-paddy countryside, this city of just over 100,000 people is a mix of ancient ruins, historic sites, and natural wonders. After dropping your bags at the hotel and freshening up, kick back and relax, or head out and explore on your own.

That evening, we're off to a nearby farm-to-table experience to dive into more Thai cuisine and explore Chiang Mai's culture as we cook everything from curries to stir-fry and spring rolls with the locals.

beach town in thailand

Day 4 - Chiang Mai Friendly Giants

Thailand may be known for its crazy capital, golden beaches, limestone mountains, and spicy cuisine, but in the north, it’s the wildlife that’s impossible to miss. Elephants have played an important role in the region for centuries, and today, we're heading to a certified humane sanctuary for an experience you'll be bragging about for years.

Our local third-party partner has a 22-point ethical vetting process, so when you meet our mahout and learn all about the importance of elephants in Thai culture, tradition, and history, you’ll be doing it the right way. We’ll hand over some snacks and watch these smiling creatures eat up before we sit down for a picnic lunch ourselves.

After a day with Chiang Mai’s friendliest locals, head to the famous night market for some Pad Thai or mango sticky rice with friends, and then grab drinks at the bars nearby.

thai monk

Day 5 - Chiang Mai, Koh Lanta to the islands

Today, we're grabbing an early bite at the hotel and then catching a flight down south for a beach getaway. We’ll skip the more touristy areas like Krabi and Koh Samui in the Bay of Thailand and instead head to the beautiful Andaman Sea, where we’ll cruise past iconic Phang Nga Bay and wind up on the sandy shores of Koh Lanta.

Check out the Old Town with the crew—with traditional wooden shophouses lining the streets to the bay and a super local vibe, it's like stepping back in time. After a bit of market fun and island history, grab a drink at the relaxing beach bars that dot the coast.

That evening, we'll all meet up for an island feast and another Singha or two. Welcome to paradise in the Thai islands.

beach island

Day 6 - Koh Lanta Paradise boat club

Grab a hat and sunscreen; it's time for some island hopping. Today, we're cruising out on the blue-green Andaman Sea for a full day of swimming, laughing, and living the tropical good life.

Expect lush islands and hidden lagoons hugging limestone cliffs. Dive in, snorkel vibrant coral reefs, and keep your eyes peeled for dolphins jumping just off spectacular beaches. You'll have lunch on board as you chill out in total paradise and make memories to last a lifetime.

After a day of bliss, we’ll turn back to Koh Lanta as the sun begins to set on Thailand. Head toward one of the island’s laid-back beach bars for spicy Tom Yum Goong with friends.

“In Bangkok, where one sees sky trains and people on high-speed Internet - and at the same time, you see people making offerings to spirit houses on their land. Or you walk the streets, and see saffron-robe monks waiting for alms-givers to give them food in the morning.” - Pitchaya Sudbanthad

Day 7 - Koh Lanta PAddle away

Unwind, sleep in, have a relaxing morning, and then get ready for some mangrove magic —w e’re heading to the sea to hop in kayaks for an excursion through Koh Lanta’s maze of winding waterways and tangled roots.

These lush forests, which play a crucial role in the island’s ecosystem, are teeming with biodiversity, so keep your eyes peeled! After paddling through the glassy labyrinth, you’ll wind up back in the old town where you can grab lunch with friends.

The afternoon’s free; if you’re into hiking, explore the trails of Mu Ko Lanta National Park (just watch your things; monkey theft is no joke). If you’re stuck on beachy vibes, check out Long Beach, or head south for the sleepier scene at Kantiang Bay. That night, it’s time for a farewell dinner as we celebrate a week of amazing scenery, chaotic cities, and brand-new best friends.

sunset

Day 8 - Koh Lanta Sawasdse e Ka

Now that's how you visit Thailand! After a week of Thai adventure, today, we’re cruising out of Koh Lanta and making our way back to Krabi and the real world.

If you're heading home, safe travels! If you're one of the lucky ones, extending your stay in Thailand or adventuring further into the heart of Southeast Asia, we are fully on board. There's tons more to see out here. You've got everything from beachy island paradise to jungles, megacities, and ancient ruins at your fingertips!

A rental car in Cambodia may be fun, a motorbike in Laos might be even more (just be safe). If you're up for another great FTLO adventure, check out nearby Bali or Vietnam!

about Thailand

Thailand, affectionately known as the Land of Smiles, is conveniently located in the heart of Southeast Asia. This tropical haven is renowned for its culturally rich tapestry, steeped in history and tradition, its phenomenal cuisine, and its breathtaking natural landscapes, ranging from verdant mountains and dense forests around Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai to picturesque beaches and pristine islands in the Andaman and Gulf of Thailand. With so much to see, eat, and do, it's no surprise that tourism is hugely important to the economy. While some Thailand vacation packages focus on just one aspect of this amazing country, our Thailand tours are geared toward seeing it all.

Good to Know

Thais speak, you guessed it, Thai! One of Asia's tonal languages, it's not exactly easy.

The currency in Thailand is the Thai baht.

Tipping is not expected in Thailand.

> TOUR FAQS

The Ultimate Thailand Island Hopper tour starts in Bangkok and ends in Koh Samui.

The 16 Day Thailand Island Hopper tour operates on the same itinerary as Ultimate Thailand original for Days 1 - 10. On Day-11, customers booked onto the 16-day itinerary will continue onto East Thai islands with their group leader.

The 16 day tour ends in Koh Samui on Day-16. A departure transfer to Koh Samui Airport or pier is not included but can be pre-booked or organised prior to departure with your tour leader.

Whether you’re travelling solo or with a mate, you’ll meet like-minded travellers from all over the world. Group sizes vary with each tour however we like to keep things fun yet personal so you’ll be travelling with no more than 30 others.

We recommend making an appointment with your GP to discuss which vaccinations will be needed for your trip.

The Hepatitis A vaccine is strongly recommended. Rabies pre-exposure vaccination may be an option, but not essential.

Malaria isn’t common in the areas we visit, but stock up on bug spray in Bangkok as there are other diseases such as Dengue that are more common.

We recommend organising all vaccines at least 4-6 weeks before your trip to Thailand.

If you need additional nights before or after your trip, just add them to your booking when you checkout.

Not sure if you need extra nights?  Get in touch  to chat with a member of the crew before or after you book

During the Ultimate Thailand Island hopper, we visit Koh Phangan, home to the legendary Full Moon Party!

Some Ultimate Thailand tour dates coincide with the Full Moon Party. If your tour lines up with a Full Moon Party we'll make sure your group can attend.

There are also some epic Half-Moon parties on the island that take place in the middle of the jungle! If your tour dates align, we'll also give you the option to join the party!

If your tour does not line-up with any “official” Full Moon parties, no need to worry! We always organise Ultimate parties for you in Koh Phangan regardless!

Check out our guide to the Koh Phangan Full Moon Party here.

Thailand is a great country to visit all year round! As the country is so vast different weather systems spread out across the region. So if you're visiting at a certain time of the year and the weather is due to be hot and dry in Bangkok, you may experience a little rain in the southern islands. Not to worry though, if rain does occur it usually does not last very long and can be a relief from the heat!

In some cases, yes, and the process is very easy!

Citizens of 41 different nationalities, including Australia, NZ, UK, USA and most of Europe , can enter Thailand without a pre-arranged visa. This ‘visa exemption’ allows you to stay 30 days when entering Thailand by air, and 15 days when crossing into Thailand by land.

It's worth noting that without proof of an onward ticket and sufficient funds for your expected stay any visitor can be denied entry. For more information about 60-Day Tourist Visas, Visa Extensions and Visa Runs check out our Thailand visa info here.

Ultimate Thailand starts in Bangkok.

You can choose to fly into either of the two International Airports, Don Mueang (DMK) or Suvarnabhumi (BKK). Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) is the newer airport of the two and is a little closer to the city.

Return flights to Bangkok are generally cheaper than organising a flight one-way. Our tour ends in Koh Samui but your guide will be able to advise you on the best way to get back to Bangkok for your flight, and help you organise the transfer!

If your flight arrival information changes, please let us know as soon as can so that we can rearrange your airport transfer. You can give us a call or email us with the updated date, time and flight number. If your flight is delayed, please find the relevant contact number to call on your Welcome Booklet to adjust your pick up time.

Booking is easy! Select your chosen departure date, enter your details and we’ll send you a booking confirmation as well as useful information about your tour.

Choose to pay a non-refundable $200 deposit to secure a spot on your chosen departure date. Need someone to talk through your travel plans with? Get in touch!

Thai Experience Tour

Thai Experience

Thai intro 18 days- Incredible trip. A mixed age range but the group worked so well! Organised to perfection, so many beautiful fun amazing experiences included and wouldn’t have been the same without our group leader dan!! Luck wasn’t really on my side on the trip but nevertheless dan was there to guide me through and ensure I still had the best time (which I did). Dan brought so much to the trip, enthusiasm, charisma and a LOT of laughter. Truly a credit to the company. Count your lucky stars if you get Dan as your group leader!! Not to mention we also had another group leader join us along the way, Matt, also a credit, brought the best vibes and great energy. Both provided an amazing experience and genuinely cared for each and every one of us. Super knowledgeable and informative too! They for sure made the trip worth while! 10/10 experience, could not recommend enough!

He has gone above and behind with all people taking part in the tour..so kind and observant! Concerning the activities they were amazing!Stress free...everything was super organised (happy to had toilet stops every hour 😜) and activities were absolutely fantastic! Loved every single experience we had! Joe was with us as a trainee..such a lovely, kind and calm person! Pleasure to meet them both! put the deposit down for my next adventure! Thank you!!!!! Chiara

I had the most amazing experience in Thailand with feel free travel!! I highly suggest this trip to anyone who is looking to step out of their comfort zone and meet new people. Throughout the trip I felt safe and in good hands. Our tour leader Jamie made sure we had the best experience possible and was very hands on. I look forward to touring with her in the future!!!

Experience Thailand 6 Days, Small Group Tour

Thailand Island Hopper - 9 days

I LOVED my trip to Thailand! Only complaint is I wish I could have stayed longer. All the excursions were well thought out and were clearly chosen with purpose. I felt like I got an authentic taste of Thailand, but the best part of my trip was the people! My group got along right away with the help of our tour leaders, Jamie and Jonny! They were amazing at making everyone feel included and heard. Both of them cultivated a wonderful environment for each of us to feel like we could be ourselves while exploring Thailand. They each were equally professional and fun! Never felt unsafe at any point during our travels. If you can take a trip with either Jamie or Jonny, DO IT!! They are amazing :) I made some life long friends and memories on this trip, so if you are unsure whether you should go, take the leap and do it, you won’t regret it!!

Experience Thailand 9 Days - Bangkok to the North, Small Group Tour

Very much enjoyed the tour. Very well structured and included lots of interesting things to see. I could have done with less temples. Too many temples on the tour, however, all the temples were interesting. Tour guide was very good. His English needs work but overall we could understand him. Very good tour and would recommend it.

Fantastic Circle of Thailand Tour - 10 Days Tour

Fantastic Circle of Thailand Tour - 10 Days

We did this tour in July 2023 and due to family exigencies forgot to post the review. The tour was well planned by Legend Travel group. It was supposed to be a group tour however it was just 3 of us on the tour. which made us miss company of fellow travelers. The guides were very nice and went out of their way to help us, so very pleased with them. On the whole it was a great tour and we covered all the places that we wanted to see and did loads of other stuff with good guidance from the guides.

Amazing Thailand In 10 Days - Private Tour Tour

Amazing Thailand In 10 Days - Private Tour

A great experience on just a few weeks notice during holiday season. Long Pham was super responsive throughout the planning stage - answering questions, shaping options, and nailing down details. She was proactive during the trip, checking in regularly to make sure we had everything we needed at each stop. Bangkok-Chiang Mai-Phuket was a perfect survey tour, and we appreciated the foundation of programming in Bangkok and Chiang Mai with just the right amount of free time in each location for us to improvise with our own opportunistic programming, wandering, or just chilling out, Hotels were comfy and convenient, if somewhat varied in amenities. Long Pham offered alternatives in each location, and advance online research permitted some specificity. We loved the outsized breakfast spreads that were included at each hotel. Guides were enthusiastic, courteous, knowledgeable, and personable - all while being perceptive to when we needed time and space to ourselves. Bottom line: a great experience, and we’d come back to Realistic Asia again for any travel in the region.

We were impressed by Legend Travel Group's logistics. Everything went according to plan. The hotels were good and so was the transport. We'll be back soon to visit Vietnam with them.

Thailand Beaches: Bangkok to Ko Samui Tour

Thailand Beaches: Bangkok to Ko Samui

Normally, when I travel somewhere, I enjoy playing the role of tour guide myself. However, having never been to SE Asia before, and not speaking the language (or even recognizing the alphabet), my wife and I opted for our first tour and hoped for the best. It turned out to be an excellent decision! Without a doubt, our tour guide and our fellow travelers added to our experience. We went to places we wouldn't have gone. We stayed in lodging we wouldn't have stayed. We did activities that we wouldn't have done. And we learned things that we wouldn't have learned. On a personal level, it was nice for me to just relax as someone else handled all the logistics regarding trains, boats, transfers, taxis, etc. Even so, there was plenty of downtime throughout the tour for us to do whatever we wanted -- (SCUBA dives, private dinner, wanders through the market). Given our positive experience, I expect that we will do other tours in the future!

What people love about Thailand Tours

The trip was amazing, the CEO (papa chai) mad the trip smooth… and met some amazing people and had wonderful time altogether… definitely returning back
This trip gives a well paced overview of central North Thailand. G Adventure organized the trip well and their travel manager Sek was amazing.
The 13 day Thai Experience was amazing! We had a wonderful group and an amazing tour guide (Liam). We were able to see a lot of Thailand while also having a lot of fun. Thailand is a wonderful country and INTRO Travel does a fantastic job showing the highlights.

Thailand Trip Itinerary

All packed and ready to go? Woop woop! It’s time to leave all those worries behind and head to the airport. We’ll be waiting for you at Suvarnabhumi International Airport (BKK) or the less commonly used Don Mueang International Airport (DMK). One of our trusted drivers will be standing with a sign with your name. Like all our other group tours, the first day is all about settling in and finding your bearings. We suggest aiming to arrive in the middle of the day to give you time to freshen up, explore the day markets, or just catch up on some sleep. We’ll head out for dinner and drinks at one of our favourite spots this evening! 📍 Location: Bangkok 🙌🏼 Key highlights: Airport pickup, getting settled in, dinner & chilled drinks

Day 1: Arrive in Bangkok

Today we really mix it up with a visit to a local temple before getting a real taste of Bangkok’s back alleys before finishing the afternoon racing around the crazy streets by Tuk Tuk. After a busy sweaty day, it’s time to relax with a traditional local massage. After dark, we’ll do it Thai style on the world-famous Khao San Road for cocktail buckets and beers. 📍 Location: Bangkok 🍽️ Included meals: Breakfast & Lunch 🙌🏼 Key highlights: Walking tour, local temple visit, Wat Pho & Thai massage

Day 2: Temples & street food… yum 🥢

Start the day with a cruise down the River of Kings as we head to one of Bangkok’s ancient temples. You’ll no doubt pick up an appetite but don’t worry, the local markets we’ll visit will satisfy your taste buds. In the afternoon, we jump aboard the overnight train as a group, sharing memories and reminiscing about the first few days in Bangkok!! 📍 Location: Bangkok 🍽️ Included meals: Breakfast 🙌🏼 Key highlights: River cruise, Wat Arun, Wang Lang Market & overnight train

Day 3: Time to shop, relax and grab the night train

There is no place like it; as you arrive at Cheow Lan Lake, it will come to you… ‘WOW, this place is incredible’. We stay overnight in floating bungalows in 1 of the oldest evergreen rainforests in the world. Spend the afternoon sipping on cold beers while relaxing in a tube or going for a paddle in the kayaks. You might be lucky enough to hear or even see some wildlife. 📍 Location: Khao Sok National Park 🍽️ Included meals: Lunch & Dinner 🙌🏼 Key highlights: Floating bungalows, tubing & kayaks

Day 4: Welcome to the Khao Sok National Park

Today we say goodbye to the jungle (after a secret stop) and hello to the white sandy beaches and crystal clear waters of southern Thailand. As we arrive in Krabi, we’ll take to the steps of the infamous Tiger Cave viewpoint. The views from the top are pretty special, and you’ll no doubt meet the families of monkeys along the way. We’ll finish the day with a well-deserved feast and a few drinks to celebrate. 📍 Location: Krabi 🍽️ Included meals: Breakfast & Lunch 🙌🏼 Key highlights: Tiger Cave viewpoint

Day 5: Let’s head south to the beaches

Krabi is home to some of the most incredible beaches in the world. After some chill time at the rooftop pool, we’ll take a longtail boat to the world-famous Railay Beach, home to towering limestone cliffs and white sandy beaches. There is no better place to top up your tan, relax and enjoy the tropical beauty of southern Thailand. 📍 Location: Krabi/Railay Beach 🍽️ Included meals: Breakfast 🙌🏼 Key highlights: Boat trip to Railay & Phra Nang Beach

Day 6: Thailand in all its beauty - Railay Beach 😍

Most of you have been waiting for this part of the trip. When you think of Thailand, you imagine island life, sunsets, beach bars, and fire shows. Well, guess what? Phi Phi has it all. We’ll explore secluded lagoons and snorkel in crystal clear waters by day. By night we’ll no doubt get our dancing shoes on with a splash of UV paint before hitting the bucket bars at the island beach parties. 📍 Location: Phi Phi Islands 🍽️ Included meals: 2 x Breakfast & 1 x Lunch 🙌🏼 Key highlights: Ferry, speedboat trip, snorkelling, fire show & beach party

Day 7-8: Let’s go island hopping…

Today is a much-needed chill day for the group, as the last 9 days have been truly EPIC. After waking up with a ‘Chang-over’, you’ll be glad to know the day is pretty relaxed. We’ll no doubt find time to visit the Phi Phi viewpoint, but you can tackle the day in your own way. Today is the perfect opportunity to go scuba diving. It’s not something we include on our trip, but you have the time, and we suggest the morning rather than the afternoon to give you enough surface time before the flight up north. 📍 Location: Phi Phi Islands 🍽️ Included meals: Breakfast 🙌🏼 Key highlights: Free day & Phi Phi viewpoint

Day 9: Time to recharge and hang by the pool ☀️

A short domestic flight from the south will take us to the Jewel of the North... Chiang Mai! The city, surrounded by mountains and jungle, screams adventure and is the perfect place to continue our trip. We’ll drop our bags and head to the food market to try some northern flavours! 📍 Location: Chiang Mai 🍽️ Included meals: Breakfast 🙌🏼 Key highlights: Travel day, flight & night food market

Day 10: Where the adventure truly begins

Not every day you get the opportunity to tick off a bucket list experience... Well, today is that day. We start early and make our way into the jungle to find Thailand’s most sacred animals in a truly magical place. After taking a short walk through the rice terraces, we’ll spend time feeding them in a safe & ethical environment. We’ll finish what’s already been an incredible day, with our local guide showing us around the historic Old Town. 📍 Location: Chiang Mai 🍽️ Included meals: Breakfast & lunch 🙌🏼 Key highlights: Elephant sanctuary, walking tour & markets

Day 11: Have you ever met an elephant? 🐘

Time to ‘find yourself’ in the most chilled and hippie vibes South East Asia has to offer. Home to some of the warmest locals, Pai is an ABSOLUTE must, and you’d be crazy stupid not to visit. We’ll spend these few days tubing down the river, soaking in the natural hot springs and getting physical with a beginner's Muay Thai session. We’ll also find time to wander the IG famous bamboo bridge and relax with a bunch of other backpackers at the Pai Canyon. 📍 Location: Pai 🍽️ Included meals: 2 x Breakfast & 1 x Lunch 🙌🏼 Key highlights: Tubing (seasonal), Muay Thai class, hot springs, bamboo bridge & Pai canyon

Days 12-13: Pai, the hippie capital of Thailand

We’ll say goodbye to Pai and hello again to Chiang Mai. After some chill time, we’ll learn the secrets of preparing local Thai cuisine with an authentic Thai Cooking Class. Our local friends won’t just have you filling your faces with delicious food, but they’ll be filling your hearts with good vibes. Today will be a day you’ll never forget, with a night full of reminiscing and heartfelt goodbyes. 📍 Location: Chiang Mai 🍽️ Included meals: Breakfast & Cooking Class 🙌🏼 Key highlights: Cooking class

Day 14: Learn to cook like a local

It’s not going to be easy, but today is checkout day and the time to say goodbye after an incredible 15 days in Thailand. I’m sure you’ll be reminiscing over breakfast and trying to piece all those happy emotions together before you set off on your journey home or to your next destination. The tour finishes in Chiang Mai, and most people book a return flight into Bangkok, so you’ll need to consider that and book a connecting ticket. We suggest leaving Chiang Mai in the morning and booking a flight from Bangkok late afternoon (we always recommend planning 4 hours between landing and your next flight). The final day has no plans, so you can leave anytime that works best for you! 📍 Location: Chiang Mai 🍽️ Included meals: Breakfast 🙌🏼 Key highlights: Check out & onward travel ⁉️ Important: Those who opted for the longer Best of Asia - 29 day trip will continue on.

  • Extend your trip and join us on another tour
  • Taste your way through the Chiang Mai night markets
  • Load up on caffeine in Chiang Mai’s many coffee shops
  • Head back to Bangkok and get lost in the big city
  • Fly south and visit some of the other islands
  • Slide in the DMs and ask the team for further ideas

Day 15: It’s time to check out and say your goodbyes

Trip Preparation

Do I need a visa?

For most travellers, Thailand is a very easy country to visit with a simple ‘Visa on Arrival’ process. This includes a long list of different countries* including; the UK, USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Scandinavia and most of Europe. The ‘Visa on Arrival’ allows you 30 days when entering Thailand by air. If you don’t qualify for the ‘Visa on Arrival’, you can apply for a visa here . *You must check your visa eligibility as we are not visa experts. The information above is general in nature. Here’s a blog that we put together to help; ‘An Unofficial Visa Guide to Asia & Australia’.

What vaccinations do I need?

Similar to visas, we are not medical professionals and would hate to give you false or misleading information. We recommend you book an appointment with your doctor or local pharmacy to discuss your travel plans and what precautions you need to be aware of. They will provide up-to-date official guidance and will no doubt have your vaccination and immunisation history on file. All destinations and areas we travel to are generally low risk but best to be on the safe side. Click here for a useful resource provided by the UK NHS website .

What about COVID-19 travel restrictions?

It's always a good idea to check whether your destination or airline requires you to be COVID-19 vaccinated or tested to travel. It's your responsibility to stay up-to-date and ensure you join us on the Thailand tour without any issues. Click here for a useful resource provided by the UK government.

Is travel insurance compulsory?

Travel insurance is an essential part of your trip preparation. It’s not only a smart idea to get covered, but it will also give your loved ones peace of mind. We actually require all customers to show proof of coverage at the beginning of the tour. We’ll need to see your name, area of cover and dates that the insurance is valid. It’s a good idea to get this sorted ASAP to ensure you’re covered for all eventualities.

Will I receive a packing list?

You sure will, once your trip is confirmed, you’ll receive a confirmation email with a bunch of useful information, including an ‘Arrival Guide’. Within this guide, you’ll find a packing list, safety and cultural information and some useful tips to prepare for your trip.

Should I bring a backpack or a suitcase?

Most people do prefer travelling with a backpack, and it’s generally easier when moving around, but it’s not uncommon for some travellers to bring a suitcase. We suggest bringing something you are comfortable with carrying and lugging around. It’s also important to bring a small day bag that can hold enough for an overnight trip or those travel essentials. Click here to read a blog we wrote on this, ‘Backpack vs Suitcase - What is best for travelling?’

Is there a limit to my luggage weight?

We suggest not going crazy with the packing and keeping it simple. Try and bring loose/floaty clothing that isn’t too thick or heavy. No need to bring heels or walking boots. Bring a few warm layers during Dec and Feb, as it can get a little chilly in the north. We limit the luggage to 20kg per person. Best to leave the kitchen sink at home 🤣

Are there laundry services on tour?

There will be a few opportunities to do laundry throughout the trip, but we always suggest bringing enough underwear and essentials for the full trip. Your Group Leader will let you know the best time to do laundry, but this usually doesn’t happen until 4 or 5 days into the tour.

Do I need to bring a towel?

There are towels provided for showering and freshening up at all the hotels we stay at. We suggest buying a microfibre towel or large sarong as they are small and dry fast for use on the beach and swimming.

How much spending money do I need?

Once you've booked your flights, paid off your trip and got some solid travel insurance, you'll be all set for that Thailand adventure. We suggest bringing no less than £300/$400, but this should be the bare minimum. We suggest working from an average of £400-500/$500-700 over 2 weeks, this will cover things like shopping, drinks, extra meals and anything else you fancy treating yourself to... maybe a few massages!?

What's the best way to manage my money?

We always recommend having a few different options when managing your money while on the road. Having your everyday bank/ATM card with you as a backup is always a good idea, but we strongly suggest signing up for a travel/currency card. Most of these cards can be managed through an easy, easy-to-use app. There are ATMs throughout the trip, and we suggest grabbing some local currency when you arrive at the airport.

Will there be a Whatsapp group?

You’ll receive a final email with useful information to help with your arrival approximately 2 weeks before the trip. This includes a link to a private Whatsapp group for the tour date that you’ll be travelling on. It’s a great place to chat with the rest of the people on the tour and your Group Leader. If you’ve not already, click this link and join the ‘Feel Free Family’ Facebook Group . The FB community is ideal for discussing how things work with past and future travellers. Add yourself to the group and make a post asking who else has booked or thinking about booking the same date as you.

Your Arrival

When should I arrive on Day 1?

We suggest aiming to arrive during the middle of the 1st day, it’s not essential, but it will give you time to freshen up before we head out for dinner and drinks. You’ll be grateful for that little extra time to relax, soak up some afternoon sun or just go for a wander and explore the local area.

Can I arrive a day or 2 early?

Absolutely! We actually recommend arriving a day or 2 early to give you more time to recharge and enjoy a bit of ‘me time’ before the tour begins. There might be experiences on your bucket list that we don’t include on the trip, this is the perfect time to fit them in.

Will I get an airport pickup?

Anyone arriving on Day 1 or who decides to book pre-tour accommodation with us will be picked up by our trusted drivers when they land. They’ll be standing waiting at the airport with a Feel Free Travel sign, so you’ll have no issues finding them 🙌🏼

Which airport should I fly into?

Most of the big international airlines will fly in through BKK (Suvarnabhumi International). If you’re on a low-cost airline or 1 of the Asian airlines, you may come in via DMK (Don Mueang International). Both options are good, and we’ll pick you up from either… no worries!

How do I know where to meet at the airport?

We’ll email everyone up-to-date arrival instructions 2 weeks before the trip with exactly where to meet the driver. Once you get picked up, we’ll get you back to the hotel and check-in. If your flight is running late, don’t worry, we’ll be tracking your progress on Google and will be waiting for you to arrive.

What’s the plan for Day 1?

The first day is the ‘Arrival Day’, there isn’t a huge amount planned. It’s the perfect day to relax, catch some sun and get your bearings. In the evening, it’s time to meet your new travel family, as we’ll be taking you all out to one of our favourite spots for dinner and chilled drinks.

After the Trip

What time does the tour finish?

All our tours finish on the morning of the final day, this will give you plenty of time to get back to the airport ready for that flight home or onto your next destination.

What happens after my tour?

It really depends from group to group… sometimes we’ll have a whole bunch of people hanging out once the tour has finished, travelling for days, weeks or even months together. But in others, you’ll have many people going their separate ways. As the trip unfolds, you’ll soon learn about each other's travel plans and share ideas for what adventures lie ahead. The hardest part is saying your goodbyes and giving your last big hugs to the people leaving straight after the trip ends.

Can I get help with return airport transfers?

You sure can, our Group Leaders are available throughout the trip to chat about your onward travel plans. They will be there to offer help and assistance when it comes to booking flights, taxis, buses, and ferries. It’s always a good idea to get your flights booked before you arrive, including any internal flights after your tour.

When should I book my return flight?

We always suggest booking your return flight later on the final day. This will give you plenty of time to get back to the airport and enough time to say your goodbyes and leave without any stress or worries. The airport is approximately 20-45 minutes from the hotel in Chiang Mai.

Can I stay longer and extend my trip?

You sure can, we don’t offer the option to extend your stay, but our awesome Group Leaders are eager to help and support your onward travel plans. You’ll no doubt get ideas from other group members as the trip unfolds, so keep those ideas to yourself until you meet the group.

I’m doing more than 1 trip, how do I book my connecting flight?

We suggest booking those connecting flights soon after booking your big international flights. We’ve written a whole blog to help when planning flights, click here to read more .

Do I get help with onward travel?

Whether you’re on a short break from work or a slightly longer backpacking adventure, our Group Leaders will help with everything from return airport transfers to giving you a bunch of ideas for the rest of your time in South East Asia and beyond.

Thailand Trip FAQs

Is there wifi on tour.

Almost all the places we stay on tour have free WIFI allowing you to stay connected with friends and family back home. There are certain places we visit that don’t, but we will always give you a heads up in advance so that you can prepare and let your loved ones at home know you may be unreachable.

Can I travel solo/come alone?

Absolutely! Our trips are built for solo travellers, and believe us… sharing new experiences with a group of new friends is one of the best things you can do. A large majority of the people that travel with us are 1st-time travellers doing it alone, so don’t worry, you’ll never be alone with us.

What’s the average age of people on these trips?

Our trips are specifically targeted towards individuals who are young at heart. If you’re between the ages of 18-39 and keen on a new adventure, you’re welcome to join us. We’ve found that the average age of our travellers is 22-32, we also get young travellers straight out of school as well as working professionals in their mid to late 30s.

How big are the group sizes?

We keep our group sizes small, with an average of 12-16 people per group, so that everyone gets to know each other and experience things at an enjoyable pace.

What’s included in the price?

We include most of the big ticket items like accommodation, activities, local experiences, secret stops, local guides, a western group leader and a bunch of meals. We also include an airport pickup on arrival!

What should I expect from the included meals?

You should expect almost all your breakfasts to be included to allow us to get the best out of each day. You’ll also get a few lunches on day trips and the odd dinner. We try and find a good balance between including meals and giving you the flexibility to eat what you fancy.

Do you cater for specific dietary/allergy requirements?

We make every effort to prepare for all dietary requirements and will do our best to support you during mealtime. Please provide clear information during the booking form and chat with your Group Leader during the first few days.

What’s not included?

You’ll just need to sort your international flights , travel insurance , visas and spending money 🙌🏼

Do we stay in hostels or hotels?

The accommodation on our trips is something we do better than anyone else, and our tours definitely wouldn’t be the same without the awesome places we stay. We’ve handpicked these places to give you the perfect balance of comfort, security and convenience. We really do love where we stay, and so do all our happy travellers 😍

Who will I share a room with?

All solo travellers will pair up with other travellers of the same sex… girls with girls & guys with guys. If you are travelling with a friend, let us know, and we can put you together… same if you are travelling as a couple, we will arrange a double room where possible. You can upgrade during the booking form if you’d like your own room.

Can I combine more than 1 trip together?

It’s common for our travellers to combine 2 or more of our trips. Our trips have been specifically programmed to allow you to do just that. You can often finish 1 trip on the same day another trip is just starting. After all, flight tickets are not cheap, you might as well maximise your experience if you have the time!

How do I book?

Booking your trip couldn’t be easier, find a trip that takes your fancy, pick a date, reserve your spot with a deposit and get that flight booked…

We always recommend reserving your spot before booking your flight. When our trips are full… unfortunately, they are FULL 😬 Check out our ’How it Works’ page for more information on booking your trip!!

This all seems too good to be true, how do I know it’s legit?

This is a question we recently added to our FAQs as we hear it time and time again, so we wanted to give you all a few ways to verify who we are;

  • We are a UK registered company No.10549017
  • Read our reviews on Facebook , Google & Trustpilot
  • Join our Facebook Group ‘Feel Free Family’
  • Follow our journey on Instagram

Why Thailand?

Like many first-time backpackers/travellers to Southeast Asia, Thailand is where it all started for us way back in 2011. After an exciting few months of solo travel involving long nights out, a few slight mishaps, and maybe one or two missed ferries, we had the time of our lives and along the way we developed a few kick-ass itineraries. We wanted to show the world there is more to Thailand than just buckets, shit-shirts, and ping-pong balls. We decided to put it all together and include everything a first-time visitor of Thailand would need to see or do. And there you have it! The first TruTravels trip, ‘ Thailand Experience ’, was born. The original trip has now grown to include ten unforgettable trips across Thailand where you can experience it all - care for elephants, zipline over the jungles of Chiang Mai , spend a night in a floating bungalow in Khao Sok National Park, or party the night away on the beaches of Koh Phangan , Koh Tao, and Phi Phi. This is a country you cannot miss. It is the best place to go as a first time traveller or an experienced backpacker...either way our Thailand tours will show you another side of Thailand and let you experience travelling in a stress-free way!

The 5 Best Small Group Tours To Thailand For Bucket Lists

best small group tours to thailand

There are stacks of packages on the market that could make it onto lists of the best small group tours to Thailand. This is the fabled Land of Smiles, after all. It’s one of the planet’s most sought-after destinations, touting everything from gold-tipped Buddhist shrines to elephant-filled jungles, soaring mountain peaks to beaches so white you’d think they were made from talcum powder. Who wouldn’t want to come?

Honestly, if for some bizarre reason Thailand hasn’t yet sneaked its way onto your bucket list, now’s the time to change that. This country at the very heart of Southeast Asia has reigned as the OG of backpacking ever since the first hippies came in the 60s. Today, it can add luxury hotels and honeymoon islands to its resume, along with remote hill towns, motorbike loops, and cities that buzz and fizz with life all night and day.

This guide will home in on the best small group tours in Thailand for the coming season. They are the packages that we think really stand out from the crowd when it comes to traveling through the home of pad Thai noodles and mango sticky rice. Some are classy affairs with luxury accommodation and high price tags to match. Others are more firmly on the backpacker side of the equation. Let’s get started…

Table of Contents

Thailand Express with Real Gap

Koh Phangan Thailand

If you’re short on time but want to make sure you check off a whole stack of Thailand must-sees, there are few curated travel plans that can hit the notes as well as the Thailand Express tour with Real Gap. For one thing, it comes from a company that really cut their teeth offering budget-friendly romps for backpackers around the Land of Smiles, and we personally know a whole bunch of people who’ve completed their packages with only good words to say.

So, what’s included? The focus is really on southern Thailand and southern Thailand alone, apart from a day or two in buzzy Bangkok to get things rolling. After glugging cold Chang beers on the Khaosan Road with your new travel pals, you’ll hop south to Koh Phangan, an isle of white-sand beaches in the Thai Gulf (and the home of the Full Moon Party, no less, but you’ll need to time your trip with the moon itself if you want to be a part of that!).

The later stages of the trip take you across to the idyllic diving hub of Koh Tao and then across to western Thailand, where it’s the Phi Phi islands that take center stage. You’ll wrap the whole thing up with sunbathing sessions on gorgeous Monkey Beach, bouts of Muay Thai boxing, and partying in Phi Phi’s main town.

Tailor Made Thailand with Abercrombie & Kent

Cash not a problem? Like the luxury end of the spectrum? There’s a fantastically curated tour of Thailand from acclaimed upscale travel outfitters Abercrombie & Kent that might be just what you’ve been searching for. It strips back many of the packed itineraries on this list to keep it beautifully simple…

Phase one: Explore Bangkok. Phase two: Go north to Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai. Phase three: Go south to the islands. The whole thing takes 11 days in total and will set you back $10,000 per person. But you’re paying for something that’s a little more out of the ordinary than the typical backpacker romp.

You can rest assured that there won’t be any rough-around-the-edges hostels involved here. All your stays are top-draw hotels with boutique lodgings and beachfront locations and whatnot. There are also some proper A-lister frills included or added as optional extras, from bespoke massage therapies to cooking lessons with award-winning chefs. Nice.

Total Thailand Trip with Contiki

Erawan Falls Thailand

Just as the name implies, the Total Thailand trip is all about exploring the stand-out destinations of the Land of Smiles in one fell swoop. Over the course of two whole weeks, you’ll hop from north to south, seeing both halves of the country in a plan that includes reggae bars and night bazaars in the jungles and sunset cocktails by the side of the bath-warm Andaman Sea. Let’s dig a little deeper…

The first portion of Contiki’s Thailand flagship takes you through Central and Northern Thailand. They are fascinating corners of the nation that rarely command the covers of travel brochures like the beaches of the south. The starter is a jaunt to Kanchanaburi, a town steeped in WWII history but also right on the cusp of the gorgeously turquoise Erawan Waterfalls. Later, you pass through the ancient capital of old Siam and then onto the northern city of Chiang Mai , for shopping and Lanna culture.

The beach portion of the adventure is hardly a comprehensive run-around of Thailand’s finest sands. To do that would take months and months. What it is: A chance to hit some of the most famous spots on the Andaman coast. You’ll go island hopping in Krabi province to see towering rock stacks and bays laden with sea turtles. But you’ll also paddle through the narrow waterways of the Khao Sok National Park on your own little kayak.

Contiki are a tried-and-tested name in the industry with plenty of completed tours to their back. They run this adventure for around $2,500 per person with a promise to reduce carbon emissions where possible and offer plenty of pay-for addon options as you go.

Explore Northern Thailand with Intrepid Travel

Ask anyone who’s been to both the north and the south of the Land of Smiles and they’ll tell you just how different they are. While the south is about chilled beach towns and luxury resorts that spill into the Indian Ocean, the north is a rich vein of culture and tradition that has been influenced by ancient Siam, the Lanna kingdom, and even Burma. It’s the one to go for if history and heritage is your thing.

Intrepid Travel have a very simple three-stop trip that aims to take in the mainstay draws in the northern region. It begins in enthralling Old Sukhothai. That’s one of the oldest cities in the country, now anchored on an ancient archaeology park that has stupas and temples that date back through the centuries.

After that, you push on to the mountains around Chiang Mai. That ushers in one of the real highlights of the Intrepid Travel package – a homestay with a local family of farmers. You’ll learn all about the tos and fros of life in the rice paddies, visit craft markets, and cycle through the countryside under the sun.

The finale will be the city of Chiang Mai. It’s a wonder, with more historic Buddhist shrines than you can shake your mango juice at. It’s also seen as the shopping mecca of the nation, offering not one, not two, but three separate night market areas where you can buy just about anything if your haggling skills are up to it!

Bangkok to Chiang Mai Express with G Adventures

tuk tuks in Thailand

If all you’re interested in are the cities of Thailand, be sure to check out the Bangkok to Chiang Mai Express package from G Adventures . It makes a point of shunning the, shall we say, less cerebral destinations in the country for the culture-brimming towns that lie between the capital and the second city up north.

The good news is that there are plenty of places dotted in between both of those. They make for a natural itinerary. As such, the plan will take you through the Royal Palace and food bazaars of Bangkok, onto the WWII river town of Kanchanaburi, across to the temple-dotted wonder city of Ayutthaya, and then deep into the north for shopping in Chiang Mai itself.

It’s a short, sharp hit of Thai culture that’s low on sunbathing but big on curiosities. We’d also say it then puts you in great stead to hop on a flight down to the islands once you’re done and relax on the beaches at your own pace – connections from Chiang Mai to Phuket , Krabi, and Koh Samui go daily so there are plenty of departure choices.

The best small group tours in Thailand – our conclusion

If you’re searching for the best small group tours in Thailand then you’ve come to the right place. The adventures we’ve listed above are the ones that we think really stand out from the crowd when it comes to offering once-in-a-lifetime trips to the fabled Land of Smiles. They’ll take you to the glimmering bays of the gulf islands, the rock-topped beaches of the Andaman, the sleepless heart of Bangkok, and the mountain towns of the north, all while focusing on offering personalized support and treatment.

Reasons why backpackers should consider group tours of Thailand

If you’re not quite sure if an organized backpacker tour of Thailand is the right choice for you, these arguments might just convince you.

1. You don’t want to travel alone

Solo travel is an incredible experience, but sometimes, you just want to meet like-minded people and share your new experiences. Group tours to Thailand designed specifically for backpackers are the best way to ensure you’ll be traveling with a fun group of others who will make your experience even better. Plus, you won’t have to break the bank to join. Finding travel buddies for Thailand has never been easier.

2. You have no time to plan

Travel planning is a full-time job, and most people don’t have time to compare hundreds of hotels, activities, and destinations. Booking a trip to Thailand can be as easy as one click when you join a group trip instead. No decisions to make, everything will be done for you.

3. You don’t know where to start

Planning a trip can be overwhelming, especially if you haven’t been to a place before. Tour companies have years of experience when it comes to planning trips, so their itineraries are perfectly crafted with activities you probably wouldn’t have tried otherwise. If you don’t know where to start planning your trip to Thailand, one of the best group tours with fellow backpackers may be the way to go.

4. It doesn’t have to be expensive

I used to hear group trip and immediately think that the prices would be marked up to ridiculous levels. Luckily, that isn’t really the case for Thailand, and for the activities and services included and the value you get in return, prices for the group tours on this list are actually really reasonable for backpackers.

If you add the hours you’ll have to spend planning your trip plus all the expenses for activities and accommodation, you’ll probably arrive at a similar number for your trip but minus all the new friends and once-in-a-lifetime memories.

Group tours of Thailand vs organizing your own trip as a backpacker

I personally love both joining group trips and planning my own travels. It depends a lot on the destination for me and what I want from a trip.

Here are some pros and cons to consider before you decide to join an organized trip. In the end, it all comes down to your personal preferences and resources.

My experience with group tours of Thailand as a backpacker

I love organized tours, and South East Asia is the perfect place to try one. What stands out for me is the fact that you’re guaranteed to make friends and meet other backpackers if you join one of the group tours of Thailand and its beautiful islands on this list. I made friends for life on group tours, and after having tried several, I can tell you exactly what I liked and disliked about each one.

This post isn’t sponsored by a tour company, so I can authentically tell you about my experiences and those of people I know who have come to Thailand on an organized trip. I’ve explored Thailand independently as a backpacker, as a more luxury-oriented traveler, and as part of a group tour, so I can compare my experiences and let you know what I liked best.

I’ve actually been traveling to Thailand for more than 25 years, which feels crazy to say, but it’s true. Needless to say, Thailand has changed a lot over the years, and I’m here to keep you updated on travel information and the best things to do or see. I live in Bali , which is just a short journey from beautiful Thailand, and I end up coming here several times per year for extended trips. Whether you’re looking for the best Islands in Thailand , an ultimate island-hopping itinerary , or useful currency tips , I’ve got you covered.

Have a look at the table below if you’re looking for a quick way to compare the best group tours of Thailand for backpackers.

1. Thailand Island Hopper – my personal favorite Thailand group tour

The 14-day Thailand Island Hopper tour by TruTravels is by far my personal favorite when it comes to organized group tours for backpackers. It’s no surprise that this tour consistently gets fantastic reviews. What does surprise me, though, is that it’s actually the second cheapest one on this list, with a price per day of only US $101.2. Considering all the value and experiences you’re getting, this is truly a steal.

If you want to meet new friends in Thailand and spend your time with other backpackers, this tour should be at the top of your list.

The maximum group size for this tour is 20 people, which is just about perfect in my experience.

Of course, this is personal preference, but I find that in smaller groups, you might run the risk of not really connecting to anyone, while larger numbers make it easier to split off and make lasting friendships with people you have things in common with.

TruTravel’s Thailand Island Hopper tour is actually the second cheapest on this list of best group tours of Thailand for backpackers. At only $101.2 US per day (US $1,417 for 14 days), you’re getting a lot of value.

Plus, Tour Radar often runs last-minute deals and off-season discounts of 20% or more, so keep your eyes open for even better prices. I’ve seen this tour for as little as $1,100, which is an unbeatable price for 14 days.

What’s included

  • accommodation for 13 nights
  • 3 breakfasts
  • experienced tour guide
  • activities such as Bangkok river cruise, temples, Thai massage, Khao Sok National Park entry, kayaking, cliff jumping, snorkeling tours, Muay Thai lesson., Koh Nang Yuan day trip
  • all transport between destinations and to/from included activities
  • overnight train
  • airport pickup (up to 2 days before the tour starts)

What’s not included

  • travel insurance
  • tips and gratuities
  • all other meals except for three breakfasts, four lunches, and one dinner
  • airport drop-off

This is my favorite group tour of Thailand, especially for backpackers. A big reason why is how many activities are included, which many other tours don’t offer.

  • Sip cocktails around the campfire in Koh Phangan
  • Visit Maya Bay – filming location of ‘The Beach’
  • Bangkok traditional river cruise and temples
  • Thai massage
  • Khao Sok National Park
  • Stay in floating bungalows
  • Cliff jumping
  • Boat trips & snorkeling around Koh Phangan and Koh Phi Phi
  • Muay Thai lesson
  • Koh Tao & Koh Nang Yuan day trip

As you can see, there is a lot going on, and all these activities make this tour more than worth it.

thailand island hopper group tours people stranding at the beach

If you’re the sort of person who enjoys nightlife and letting loose, this group tour of Thailand is a great choice. You’ll spend quite some time in some of the best hotspots for parties in Thailand, including Koh Phangan, Phuket, and Koh Phi Phi.

But, there are also plenty of cultural activities in more peaceful places, so this isn’t just a party trip but rather a good mix of both.

There are several guides on this tour, and they tend to change from trip to trip. I can only speak from personal experience and consider that the guides I got to know were fantastic and made this whole experience so special.

Tommy and Max felt like they were part of the group, and I was super impressed by how knowledgeable they were.

They were always there if there was a problem, no matter how small, but they also became friends with the group, making it feel like a trip with life-long friends and not organized fun.

The fantastic guides were a big reason why this tour was the clear winner for me on this list.

Flexibility, pace, and free time

This tour covers a lot of destinations, and you’ll be moving around quite a lot. But despite the action-packed itinerary, there is always room for free time, and you might be surprised how much you can actually explore on your own.

Of course, the pace is fast, and you’ll only be in most places for one or two nights, but the itinerary was perfected to make sure you don’t feel overwhelmed.

hotel with pool and sunloungers and sun umbrellas

Accommodation

TruTravels has a few hotels they always go to in Thailand, but many locations change depending on the season, available rooms, and group size. Travelers share rooms with one or more other person of the same gender for most of the trip.

Keep in mind that this is a relatively affordable group tour targeted at backpackers, so some accommodation can be quite basic.

Personal experiences

I love this tour, and I’m certain you will, too. Most Thailand itineraries for group tours only cover the basics, which is fine for most backpackers but doesn’t include a ton of activities. I really like that TruTravels offers a big variation of things to do and islands to explore , giving you a grreat overview of Thailand in such a short time.

I also thought that the staff and guides were exceptional and truly went the extra mile to make everyone feel included and welcome. Most people from the group ended up staying in Thailand longer and continued to travel together and stay in touch to this day.

If you want to make friends, this tour is the perfect choice.

I’ve done quite a few organized group tours for backpackers in Thailand and also in places like Bali , and the community this tour created was probably the best I’ve ever experienced.

2. Thai Experience Tour by INTRO Travel – upgraded hotels and free time

The Thai Experience Tour by INTRO Travel is the perfect organized trip for first-time Thailand visitors who want to see as much as possible without being rushed.

These tours always have plenty of backpackers, and because the groups are slightly smaller, you’ll make even closer friendships than on some of the other tours. This 13-day itinerary is similar to the Thailand Island Hopper, which is number one on this list, but it doesn’t include Koh Tao, which takes away some of the rush.

You’ll still see and do a lot, though, and have plenty of fun along the way.

Heads up – this tour is the most expensive on this list, but with everything that’s included and the quality provided, you’ll see why.

underwater fish people swimming in the ocean in thailand

This tour has a maximum of 16 participants, which makes it one of the smaller tours on this list. If you’re overwhelmed by lots of people, you might enjoy exploring Thailand with a smaller group.

Personally, I prefer having more people in a tour group, but 16 is still a good number in my opinion.

  • accommodation for 12 nights in twin/double/triple share rooms
  • 11 breakfasts
  • an experienced tour guide
  • activities such as a river cruise, visiting temples, cooking class, Khao Sok National Park, jungle trek, kayaking, tubing, snorkeling, Muay Thai or yoga, Thai massage, and visiting an elephant sanctuary
  • transport, trains, and ferries
  • airport pickup
  • ten trees planted for every booking
  • all other meals
  • optional activities
  • private room for solo travelers

Celebrating a special occasion? Here are the best things to do in Bangkok on your birthday .

INTRO Travel’s Thai Experience tour is by far the most expensive on this list of best organized group tours of Thailand for backpackers, but there is a lot included. The total price for ten days is US $1,799, which means you’ll be paying US $138 per day.

This is definitely expensive for Thailand, and in my experience, you’re mostly paying for the extra meals that are included, and the quality of accommodation. The other parts of the tour tend to be very similar to more affordable options, especially if you compare the itineraries.

INTRO Travels markets this as their “premium” tour, and they definitely stay in slightly nicer hotels. This tour is also the only one on this list that is almost never discounted and usually sells out, so that speaks for itself.

This itinerary includes all the main highlights of Bangkok, Khao Sok, Koh Phangan, Koh Phi Phi, and Phuket, but it’s not extremely packed. There is still a lot of free time, so if you’re looking for a tour that plans out your entire day for you, this might not be the one to choose.

  • Bangkok river cruise
  • Visit temples in Bangkok
  • Thai cooking class
  • Stay in floating bungalows and tree house
  • Jungle trek
  • Kayaking & tubing
  • Island boat trip & snorkeling
  • Muay Thai or yoga
  • Beach party
  • Koh Phi Phi view point
  • Elephant sanctuary

people standing in a group tours picture at maya bay in thailand

Group tours of Thailand for backpackers are bound to involve some beers on the beach and the occasional party. Almost all places on this tour have nightlife, except for Khao Sok National Park.

Most other nights will most likely involve a few drinks (depending on your group, of course), and culture is not really the focus of this tour.

I had great experiences with the guides of this tour, and Val especially was very friendly and outgoing, really helping our group become friends quickly.

I noticed that there are usually quite a few different guides involved for different places and activities, which has its pros and cons. You get to meet more people and get different perspectives, but I personally enjoy having one guide as the focus of a group tour more.

This 13-day itinerary has a lot of activities, but there is still a lot of free time. Since you’ll be staying in four different places around Thailand, you’ll be moving a lot, so be prepared for a ton of new impressions and experiences.

If you’re looking for a tour where every second of the day is planned for you, this might not be the tour for you.

Instead, you’ll usually have one or two things to do every day, one of which is usually a night out.

cabins on the water at Khao Sok National Park in Thailand which is famous for its Instagram captions and quotes

The acommodation breakdown of this tour is as follows:

  • 2 Nights Bangkok – Hotel
  • 1 Night Sleeper Train – Multi-share cabin
  • 1 Night Khao Sok – Floating bungalows
  • 1 Night Khao Sok – Jungle tree houses
  • 3 Nights Koh Phangan – Beachside bungalows
  • 2 Nights Koh Phi Phi – Hotel
  • 2 Nights Phuket – Hotel

This is INTRO Travel’s “premium” tour, which they largely attribute to their upgraded accommodation. Just keep in mind that it won’t be luxurious, so adjust your expectations.

While specific hotels often change depending on season and demand, many INTRO Travel tours stay at these hotels: Baan Chart, Sarana Bungalows, Andaman Legacy, Surf Hotel.

Note that you can contact customer support to request a single room if you’re a solo traveler. An additional charge will apply.

I loved this organized tour of Thailand and can safely recommend it for backpackers hoping to explore the stunning southern islands. There is a lot included, and I especially liked the choice of hotels, which were slightly nicer than on some of the other tours.

The itinerary has definitely been perfected over the years, and even though it has all the important hotspots, you won’t feel rushed.

I have to say that since this is a more expensive tour, the people in our group were slightly older than the other tours on this list. I would still say this tour is made for backpackers, though, and it’s a great choice if you yourself are a bit older and don’t want to be surrounded by 18-year-olds the entire time.

Thai Experience Tour by INTRO Travel map

Day 1: Arrive in Bangkok, airport pickup, chill, and meet the group. Day 2: Explore Bangkok with a river cruise, visit ancient temples, travel by tuk tuk, and experience Bangkok nightlife. Day 3: Participate in a Thai cooking class and travel south on an overnight train. Day 4: Visit Khao Sok National Park, enjoy activities like tubing and kayaking, and stay overnight in floating bungalows. Day 5: Explore the rainforest, visit a local plantation, try tubing or trekking, and stay overnight in tree houses. Day 6: Travel to Koh Phangan, check into beachside bungalows, relax, and enjoy a beach party in the evening. Day 7: Island tour of Koh Phangan, visit beaches and viewpoints, and have a beach BBQ. Day 8: Choose between a Muay Thai or a yoga class, enjoy a traditional Thai massage, and spend the last night on Koh Phangan. Day 9: Travel to the Phi Phi Islands and enjoy an island night out. Day 10: Exclusive boat trip around Phi Phi Leh with activities like snorkeling and beach exploration. Day 11: Hike to the Koh Phi Phi viewpoint, relax on beaches, and travel to Phuket for sunset dinner and drinks. Day 12: Spend the day with elephants at a sanctuary, learn about their care, and enjoy a farewell dinner in Phuket. Day 13: Check out from Phuket, with options to extend the stay or continue travels, assisted by the group leader.

Tour duration: 13 days Destinations included: Bangkok, Khao Sok National Park, Koh Phangan, Koh Phi Phi, Phuket Group size: maximum 16 people Operator: INTRO Travel Approximate price: US $1,799 Price per day: $138 US What we loved: The accommodation, the Koh Phi Phi boat tour, and free time Why this tour is good for backpackers: See the highlights of Thailand and enjoy upgraded hotels

3. South To North / Thailand Island Hopper Feel Free Travel – packed itinerary and value for money

Feel Free Travel tours are the perfect choice for backpackers wanting to explore Thailand on their first trip. You can choose to stay either 9 days or 15 days , but only the longer tour includes northern Thailand. This tour is perfect for backpackers and those looking for a fun and packed itinerary.

These tours include a lot of activities and destinations, and you’ll be moving around quite a bit. The longer version of this tour even includes a flight to northern Thailand, so there’s a lot of value for money.

Feel Free Travel has a little bit of everything and perfectly combines culture with fun and nightlife.

beach volleyball thailand people playing

The maximum group size is 16 people for this tour, which is a pretty good number in my experience. You’ll have a small enough group that you can make friends but still enough people to make sure you’ll find someone you connect with.

  • accommodation for 8 or 14 nights
  • 8 or 19 meals
  • activities such as a temple tour by tuk tuk, river cruise, Thai massage, and snorkeling trips
  • ferry tickets
  • all transport
  • domestic flight to Chiang Mai

At $126 US to $110 US per day, these tours are mid-priced, bordering on the more expensive end. However, the longer tour, which is cheaper when comparing the price per day, includes a domestic flight, which adds quite a bit of value.

There are also quite a few meals included, and the activities are high quality, justifying the price even more.

Sure, here’s the list with only proper nouns capitalized and formatted as bullet points:

  • Bangkok temple tour by tuk tuk
  • Tuk tuk ride
  • Explore Khao San Road
  • Bucket bars Bangkok
  • Bangkok street food tour
  • Traditional Thai massage
  • Sleeping on floating bungalows
  • Tiger Cave Temple
  • Railay Beach boat trip
  • Phi Phi fire show
  • Phi Phi night out & beach party
  • Phi Phi viewpoint
  • Phi Phi boat trip
  • Monkey Beach visit & snorkeling

Extended tour only:

  • Flight to Chiang Mai
  • Explore Chiang Mai & night markets
  • Jungle hot springs
  • Sunset Pai Canyon
  • Sunset river tubing
  • Elephant sanctuary visit

people on one of the best group tours in thailand posing in a waterfall backpackers

This tour includes a decent level of nightlife, and places like Bangkok, Krabi, Koh Phi Phi, and Pai are great for a night out. But, it’s not as drinking-oriented as some other tours on this list, so consider what your own personal preferences are before deciding.

Feel Free tends to have more guides than some of the other tours on this list, with some joining the tour along the way, especially when the short trip ends after 9 days and the extended one begins.

This made it a bit difficult to create a sense of community, in my opinion, and the 15-day tour felt like two separate tours in a way. Not my favorite way to set it up, but a small detail.

Since there is a long and shorter option for this tour, the pace is actually quite relaxed and not too fast. There is plenty of free time, but you still get to experience all the highlights.

If you do the long tour, you’ll actually have an entire free day in the middle of the trip, which was nice to relax for a bit before heading up north. But, I would have appreciated some optional activities on this day, because the tour is quite expensive and an absence of things to do can feel a bit like wasting money.

white sand beach and blue ocean with branch

Feel Free usually provides twin or double rooms, which means you’ll have to share with another traveler of the same gender if you’re coming alone. They rarely have dorm accommodation, and we only slept in one for one night on our tour, which was nice and made it feel like the hotels were slightly upgraded and not just hostels.

They also offer an option to upgrade to a private room for solo travelers, but it’s quite expensive at around US $650 additional for the 15-day trip. In my experience, it’s not really worth it.

For US $32, you can book an extra night in Bangkok in the same hotel before the tour begins in case you’re arriving early.

I loved that Feel Free gives you the option of two different tour lengths, which means you’ll have a bigger group at the start of the trip, and up north, it will be a smaller selection of people. However, I don’t think the shorter tour is really worth it for the price. The best parts of the tour for me were after day 9, so the short version would be a bit disappointing, I think.

I love nightlife and having drinks with new friends, but I also enjoyed the many activities and cultural aspects, so I thought this tour provided a great balance of both.

South To North/Thailand Island Hopper Feel Free Travel thailand group tours for backpackers

Here’s a one-sentence summary for each day of the itinerary:

Day 1: Arrive in Bangkok, meet the group, check-in, and head out for dinner and drinks. Day 2: Explore Bangkok with a visit to a local temple, a tuk tuk ride through the back streets, a traditional massage, and an evening at Khao San Road. Day 3: Cruise down Bangkok’s river to visit ancient temples and markets, followed by an overnight train journey. Day 4: Arrive at Khao Sok National Park, stay in floating bungalows, and enjoy activities like tubing and kayaking. Day 5: Head to the beaches of southern Thailand, climb up to the Tiger Cave viewpoint, and see monkeys. Day 6: Relax at Krabi’s rooftop pool and visit Railay Beach for sunbathing and enjoying the tropical scenery. Day 7: Ferry ride to the Phi Phi Islands for island life, beach bars, sunsets, and fire shows. Day 8: Private boat trip around Koh Phi Phi, including snorkeling, exploring lagoons, visiting the Viking Cave and Monkey Beach. Day 9: Relaxing day to relax as the short tour ends. Day 10: Fly to Chiang Mai, and explore the night market for local flavors. Day 11: Visit an elephant sanctuary to learn about and interact with Thailand’s sacred animals. Day 12: Discover Pai’s hippie vibes and enjoy tubing or visiting viewpoints. Day 13: Experience a traditional Muay Thai class, relax in natural hot springs, and enjoy sunset at Pai Canyon. Day 14: Return to Chiang Mai for a Thai cooking class and enjoy the last night together. Day 15: Check-out in Chiang Mai, conclude the trip, and arrange onward travel.

Tour duration: 9 or 15 days Destinations included: Bangkok, Khao Sok National Park, Krabi, Railay Beach, Koh Phi Phi, Pai, Chiang Mai Group size: maximum 16 people Operator: Feel Free Approximate price: US $1,135 or $1,654 Price per day: US $126 or $110 What we loved: Two tour options and seeing northern Thailand Why this tour is good for backpackers: A great balance between parties and culture

4. Full Moon Island Hopper – parties and lots of destinations

Experiencing the Full Moon Party is one of the most popular backpacker experiences in Thailand, and this fun 16-day group tour by TruTravels is the perfect way to go with new friends.

This tour packs a lot of destinations into just over two weeks, but there is still quite a bit of downtime and opportunities to explore by yourself. If you’re worried about not having enough freedom on a group tour of Thailand, this backpacker experience will be the perfect compromise.

people in ocean backpackers on group tours in thailand

With a maximum of 20 people, this is one of the larger tours on this list. In my experience, the groups tend to be closer to 18, though, which I thought was the perfect amount. However, if you prefer a more personal experience in a close-knit group, consider choosing a tour with fewer people instead.

  • accommodation for 15 nights
  • two breakfasts, four lunches, and one dinner
  • activities such as Thai massage, boat tours, tubing & kayaking, Slip N Fly, and more

TruTravel is a very popular tour company, and their prices are not the lowest but also not the highest. They’re somewhere in the middle when comparing different types of group tours of Thailand for backpackers, but in my experience, their tours are always very well organized and planned out, so worth the money.

  • Bangkok river cruise & temples
  • Tubing & kayaking
  • Boat trip around Koh Phangan
  • Snorkeling & waterfalls (seasonal)
  • Sunset pool party
  • Full Moon party
  • Koh Nang Yuan day trip
  • Phi Phi Island boat trip
  • Phuket wave simulator surfing

fire show thailand man standing

This group tour for backpackers is designed to take you to the Full Moon Party, while also showing you around Thailand’s beautiful islands. Nightlife is definitely the focus, so if you’re not looking to drink quite a bit and have some long nights out, it might not be for you.

Some of the parties were definitely intense, and there is usually a rest day planned to help travelers recover. This could get a bit boring for those not out late, so keep that in mind if you’re not planning on partying.

You’ll be accompanied by expert tour guides, usually a mixture of locals and foreigners. TruTravels usually employs more locals in Thailand, which I loved on this particular tour, as our guides were able to give us a much better insight into the local culture than a backpacker could have.

This tour includes a lot of destinations, which is no surprise, since it’s also the longest tour on this list. You’ll definitely spend quite a lot of time traveling, especially since you’ll visit islands on both the east and west coasts of Thailand. There is even an overnight boat.

But the tour doesn’t have as many activities as others on this list, so you’ll have quite a bit of free time. Whether this is a good choice for you depends on what type of traveler you are. I personally enjoyed tours with a more packed itinerary more, as we ended up not doing very much during our free time most days, but just stayed at the hotel.

golden buddha statue in front of white decorated temple

The hotels chosen by TruTravels aren’t always the same and tend to change from trip to trip. However, they frequently include twin or dorm rooms, and there wasn’t an option to book privates, at least not on our tour.

Generally, the accommodation was decent and among the nicer ones on this list, but it’s not luxurious.

This tour is incredibly fun if you want to party in Thailand and need some downtime most days to recover from the night before. However, considering the length and price, there weren’t too many activities included, and if you have high expectations for a jam-packed schedule, you might end up disappointed.

What stood out to me where the amazing guides on this tour, who really became friends with us. Sometimes on group tours, you’ll have guides who are burnt out because they’ve been doing the same Thailand trip with a group of backpackers over and over again, and that can be frustrating. This tour was definitely an exception and I haven’t had so much fun with a group in quite some time.

Full Moon Island Hopper map thailand backpackers group tours

Here’s the itinerary summarized into a bullet point list with a short sentence for each day:

Day 1: Arrival in Bangkok, Thailand, with airport pickup and check-in day for exploring and evening drinks on Khao San Road. Day 2: Cruise through Bangkok on a longtail boat, visit Wat Arun and Wat Pho temples, and enjoy an evening of dinner and drinks. Day 3: Start with a traditional Thai massage, then take an overnight train to Khao Sok National Park. Day 4: Explore Khao Sok’s floating bungalows, go kayaking, swimming, and tubing against a stunning limestone mountain backdrop. Day 5: Travel to Koh Phangan, relax at Bottle Beach with volleyball, sunbathing, and an evening dinner and fire show on the beach. Day 6: Free morning at Koh Phangan, afternoon Muay Thai lesson, and explore Haad Rin’s bars in the evening. Day 7: Island boat trip around Koh Phangan with snorkeling, a visit to Than Sadet waterfall, and a party on the boat. Day 8: Enjoy the Slip N Fly attraction, prepare for the Full Moon Party with UV painting, and party until sunrise. Day 9: A day for relaxation and recovery with a Thai massage and possibly watching a film at a local bar. Day 10: Ferry to Koh Tao (‘Turtle Island’), check-in, dinner, and drinks near Sairee Beach. Day 11: Day trip to Koh Nang Yuan for snorkeling and sightseeing, followed by the Koh Tao Pub Crawl. Day 12: Free day for relaxation or adventure on Koh Tao, then a night ferry to the mainland and transfer to Phi Phi Islands. Day 13: Trek to Phi Phi viewpoint and explore the island’s nightlife. Day 14: Phi Phi boat trip to Monkey Island, Viking Caves, and Maya Bay, with swimming with phosphorescence after sunset. Day 15: Travel to Phuket for the final night, exploring Phuket & Patong’s nightlife. Day 16: Chilled checkout in Phuket, assistance with onward travel arrangements.

Tour duration: 16 days Destinations included: Bangkok, Khao Sok, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao, Koh Phi Phi, Phuket Group size: maximum 20 people Operator: TruTravels Approximate price: $1,755 Price per day: $109.70 What we loved: the fun guides and wild nightlife Why this tour is good for backpackers: the Full Moon Party Experience and a great overview of destinations in Thailand

5. Southern Thailand Sojourn: Nightlife & National Parks – free time and close friends

G Adventure’s Southern Thailand Sojourn group tour is perfect for backpackers looking for a quick and affordable trip with plenty of free time. This tour isn’t as well-known as some of the others on this list, with only 17 reviews on TourRadar, but it actually really suprised me, which is why I just had to include it.

If you’re looking for a hidden gem with a tightly knit group and the perfect combination of nightlife and national parks, you’ll love this option.

As the most affordable of the Thailand group tours for backpackers on this list, this is definitely a more basic option without a crazy amount of activities or luxury hotels. If you know what to expect, you’ll love it.

sunset with boat in thailand over the ocean

The groups have a maximum of 18 people, although our tour leader (or CEO) mentioned that the average number of guests lies closer to 12, which was also the case for our tour. We got very lucky, and everyone got along super well, but keep in mind that this is a smaller tour, so the type of people on your trip will definitely have a big influence on your experience.

  • accommodation for 7 nights
  • 5 breakfasts
  • two lunches
  • activities such as boat tours, a street food tour, and a snorkeling trip
  • aiport pickup

The Southern Thailand Sojourn Tour is the most affordable on this list at less than US $100 per day. When I booked ours, we actually got a pretty big discount and only paid around US $600 for the entire tour (instead of the normal US $789). I found that they frequently run offers on less popular dates during the off-season, so definitely keep an eye out for that.

  • Kao Thep Pitak Community-Owned Farm & Meal, Ban Ta Khun
  • Street food crawl
  • Lake Cheow Larn excursion
  • Snorkeling trip in Koh Tao

woman taking photo of james bond rock in krabi

This tour has some options for nightlife, but in my experience, the guides don’t push it as much as some of the other tours. If you’re looking for one of the best group tours of Thailand for backpackers but don’t want to drink every single night, this is a great choice.

Your experience will depend a lot on your group, though, and ours was quite laid back, so we didn’t end up going out late that much, not even for the Full Moon Party.

The guides for this tour were called CEOs, and they definitely knew what they were doing when it came to making sure everyone had fun. We loved Puna as our CEO, but generally, the guides weren’t as close with us as the tour leaders on some of the other trips.

This tour had a lot of free time, almost too much for my personal taste. Many of the activities were optional, so most of our group ended up just going to the beach a lot or staying at the hotel playing cards.

It was still very fun, but I did feel a bit like we were wasting time sometimes and could have explored a bit more.

You’ll stay in twin rooms for five nights of this trip, a bungalow for one night in Khao Sok, and then the sleeper train. The hotels were average and okay for the price, but nothing special.

This tour was very different than the other four group tours of Thailand for backpackers on this list. It’s short and sweet, and with such a small group, you’ll almost feel like you’re just traveling with friends and not on an organized trip.

The lack of activities was a bit of a minus point for me, but we got so lucky with the people on our tour that we just became friends instantly and had a blast. We managed to organize a few activities ourselves since I and some others had been to Thailand before, and it was a very fun and wholesome experience.

I would recommend this tour to backpackers who don’t want to join a tour that only focuses on drinking and who are sticking to a budget.

Comparing different tours can be a hassle, and to save you from having to navigate dozens of open tabs from different websites, we highly recommend Tour Radar . They’re a European company with over ten years of experience and will help you find the best group tours to Thailand for backpackers.

Thailand Group Tours for Solo Travelers

Travel solo as part of a group tour to Thailand

Why travel solo to Thailand?

Celebrated around the world for its cuisine, you’re likely to be familiar with the flavors of Thailand already. Travel to Bangkok and you’ll feel the country’s food calling out to you from market stalls selling everything from crispy fried bananas to piping hot noodles.

Built on the banks of the Chao Phraya River, your first impressions of the Thai capital may well be skyscrapers and everything done at speed, but Old Bangkok still peeks out between the cracks, in its golden temples, quiet alleyways and traditional shop fronts.

Further north, the cities of Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai retain a more provincial charm, marked by traces of the Lanna Kingdom which once ruled the north. The temples here are some of the most unique in the country: hilltop shrines guarded by giant serpents, intricate structures that could have been carved of ice and ultra-modern altars painted in cobalt blue.

Thailand’s south is most famous for its tropical beaches and epic limestone cliffs. Krabi Province, in particular, attracts adventurous types of all levels, especially rock climbers. Looking for an active solo adventure? Step right this way…

Top places to visit in Thailand

This city in mountainous northern Thailand is home to a community of artists and digital nomads, attracted by its relaxed lifestyle and ancient architecture. Here you can sample Thai food at Kad Ton Payom market, wander through tropical gardens and get your culture fix in local galleries.

Krabi is home to the Phi Phi islands, which jut out from the sea like giant green boulders, and the beautiful Railay Beach, a spot popular with rock climbers and only accessible by boat. In Krabi, you’ll find craggy, sheer limestone cliffs and dense mangrove forests, as well as idyllic white sandy beaches.

This heady capital city is abuzz with life. Explore Bangkok the way locals do, by traveling around by tuk-tuk, Skytrain or traditional riverboat. Head to the Old Town to admire the beauty of Wat Pho temple.

The abundant biodiversity of this national park and nature reserve makes it the perfect spot to explore Thailand’s rural hinterlandTake a boat ride into a lush habitat of rainforests, caves and limestone islands, or grab your hiking boots to see the surrounding countryside on foot.

Visa-free policy ignites China-Thailand travel boom

TAIYUAN, March 18 (Xinhua) -- Just after bidding farewell to a group of Thai teachers visiting universities in Beijing, tour guide Yang Yaoyu rushed to Shanxi Province in north China to greet another group of Thai visitors.

The seasoned Thai-speaking tour guide can attest to a recent surge in enthusiasm among Thai tourists towards China, after a mutual visa exemption agreement between the two countries took effect on March 1.

"Previously, the peak of Thai tourists to China was in April after Songkran festival. However, my schedule is now fully booked from March 3 until the end of April," Yang said.

Porntip Rojansunan, together with the other 20 Thai visitors in her group, is a beneficiary of the visa waiver. After flying directly from Bangkok to Taiyuan, capital of Shanxi, on March 9, the group commenced their five-day trip by visiting three UNESCO World Heritage sites in the province, namely, Mount Wutai, Yungang Grottoes, and the ancient city of Pingyao.

"Before, I was only familiar with Chinese destinations like Beijing and Shanghai. Since coming to Shanxi, I must say how impressed I am by the profound history and rich culture here. I will undoubtedly encourage my friends and relatives to come to experience the charm of Shanxi themselves," Porntip said.

The visa-free policy has boosted cultural exchanges between the Chinese and Thai people, and more and more Thai tourists are considering China as their first choice destination for overseas travel.

Data from China's major online travel agency Trip.com showed that on March 1, the number of Chinese tourists to Thailand increased by more than 30 percent year on year, while travel orders from Thailand to China surged by threefold year on year, an increase of more than 160 percent compared with 2019.

China and Thailand are important tourist destinations and sources for each other, and the implementation of the mutual visa exemption holds significantly positive implications for the growth of the tourism sectors in both nations, said Qin Jing, vice president of Trip.com Group. The Chinese side can provide Thai tourists with more personalized options spanning culture, folk custom, and snow-and-ice activities, among others, Qin added.

China is persistent in its facilitation of entry for foreign nationals, promising to make itself a preferred destination for international travelers. Since the mutual visa exemption policy between China and Thailand came into effect, the number of countries that have such entry policy with China has increased to 23, including Singapore, the Maldives, and the United Arab Emirates.

In addition, China has adopted a visa-free policy for Switzerland, Ireland, Hungary, Austria, Belgium and Luxembourg on a trial basis, starting March 14. This series of measures is regarded by industry insiders as a positive signal that is conducive to promoting global economy and trade and accelerating personnel exchanges.

"The recently concluded sessions of China's top legislature and top political advisory body, or the 'two sessions,' also mentioned that the country will facilitate foreign nationals to work, study, and travel within China. This indicates that the fundamentals of China's unwavering commitment to opening up remain constant," said Zhang Wei, secretary general of the inbound tourism branch of China Association of Travel Services.
