16 East Coast Day Trips and Weekend Getaways

Posted on Published: 06/07/2023  - Last updated: 02/25/2024

As my kids get older, it becomes more challenging to find long periods of time when we can get away for family vacations. Weekends and school vacations have become filled with sports, school activities, theater, and more. Day trips and quick weekend getaways are sometimes the best way to explore a new area on vacation without the commitment of a full vacation.

Living in the Northeast, we are lucky that there are so many options for fantastic East Coast day trips and weekend getaways. Depending on where on the East Coast you live, some of these can be easy road trips for a quick getaway.

You can always find enough things to do for an entire vacation, however, there are also some activities you may prioritize for a day or weekend trip. Some of the attractions you’ll find at these beautiful places include beaches, National Parks, restaurants, shops, museums, tourist attractions, and more.

Disclosure: We’ve been on some complimentary and discounted media trips to these destinations over the years, but all opinions are my own. This post contains affiliate links and a purchase/click through one of these links may result in a commission paid to us.

East Coast Day Trips and Weekend Getaways

The Portland waterfront with boats - one of the best east coast weekend getaways

Portland, Maine

The small seaside city of Portland Maine is one of my favorite small cities on the East Coast. This beautiful, charming city includes a historic district along the waterfront. While you can visit Portland at any time of year, I especially love visiting in the warmer months when you can take advantage of the water for activities like boat cruises . It’s really one of the best weekend getaways in New England .

Portland offers museums, delicious local restaurants, breweries, and shopping. We typically spend about three nights there every time we visit, but you could definitely pick a few things to do on a day or weekend trip.

Acadia National Park

Located on Maine’s Mount Desert Island along the Cadillac Mountains and the beautiful town of Bar Harbor, Acadia National Park is one of the most popular summer destinations in New England. Acadia offers outdoor activities like bicycling, birdwatching, hiking, swimming, boating, and more. It’s the perfect place in the summer months for nature lovers.

Camping is also available at Acadia, but be sure to make those reservations in advance. You’ll also need to purchase an entrance pass to enter the park for any of the activities. If driving up Cadillac Mountain, there’s a separate road vehicle reservation that you’ll need to have before you go.

North Conway yellow railroad station

North Conway, NH

I love visiting the White Mountains in the summer. The crisp mountain air, the gorgeous green mountains, and this beautiful small town combine to create a great summer vacation destination. Of course, if you enjoy skiing, there are also several ski resorts to visit.

Within North Conway, there are several fun things to do, including hiking, swimming, outlet shopping , and more. There’s also Story Land , a theme park for young children, which is located in the nearby town of Glen, NH. It’s a popular place for young families. You can also enjoy a scenic ride on the Conway Scenic Railroad. If you are planning on staying overnight, there are lots of great hotels in the area.

Newport, RI

Newport is a beautiful, waterfront town located on the tip of Aquidneck Island in Rhode Island. There’s so much to do there, including scenic cruises, beautiful beaches, sailboat rides, the Tennis Hall of Fame, the Newport Mansions , Fort Adams State Park, the Cliff Walk, and more. Here are some of the tours you can book while you are there .

If you enjoy shopping, visit the waterfront shopping area in Brick Marketplace and along America’s Cup Avenue. Newport has some great hotels within walking distance of many of the attractions. Or, if you are in the area, you can also enjoy a day trip to the area.

Beach with seagrass and a large boardwalk

One of the best summer getaways on the East Coast is Cape Cod. This region of Massachusetts has lots of small towns offering shops, beaches, museums, restaurants, and so much more.

Whether you are visiting Cape Cod for a day trip or a weekend, it’s best to choose just one or two towns to focus your visit. In the summer, it can be especially difficult to get around the different towns, because traffic can make commute times longer.

I especially recommend visiting the beaches on Cape Cod, including the ones that are part of the Cape Cod National Seashore. They are usually not too overcrowded and are really beautiful. They offer various amenities depending on location. While you are there, be sure to try some of the fantastic Cape Cod seafood .

Plymouth, MA

As you travel down to Cape Cod, you’ll pass Plymouth, MA, the site of the first Pilgrim settlement. This town is home to several historical sites, including Plymouth Rock, Plimoth Patuxcet Museums , and the replica Mayflower. They can all be visited in one day.

If you plan to visit Cape Cod and love history, you may want to stop in Plymouth on the way to the Cape. It’s an easy stop off Route 3 as you drive to the Cape from Boston and is a pretty short drive.

Martha’s Vineyard/Nantucket

These two islands located off the coast of Cape Cod are extremely popular with seasonal guests. They are beautiful, with gorgeous beaches, fantastic summer restaurants, shops, and more. Because they are islands, you’ll either need to take a ferry or a flight to get there. Therefore, unless you are staying on Cape Cod, they probably aren’t great day trips.

However, many families enjoy long weekend getaways on both Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket. It’s best to choose one of the two because it’s not easy to get between them. Book your accommodations and ferry well in advance – things book up early for summer vacations. Here are some tours you can book .

The historic city of Boston should definitely be visited at least once by families. I generally recommend spending more than a few days in Massachusett’s capital. However, if you live in the area and can make more than one visit, a weekend getaway could be perfect.

There are many different neighborhoods in Boston, so you can choose your preferred location based on where you plan on spending much of your time. We love the waterfront area, the Back Bay, and the Faneuil Hall area. But there are other great spots for a family vacation as well.

If you are only in Boston for one day , we recommend this itinerary, so you can see many of the historical attractions and learn more about American history. Of course, you could also plan your Boston day trip around a Boston Red Sox game at Fenway Park, or take a tour of the park .

Depending on your plans, you may be able to save money on attractions by purchasing a CityPASS .

rockport massachusetts waterfront with motif number 1 and boats in the foreground

Rockport, MA/Gloucester

One of our favorite day trips from our home West of Boston is Rockport and Gloucester MA. These two beautiful towns offer great views, shops, restaurants, and much more.

For a day trip, you’ll probably have to choose between a beach day or a shopping/walk-around town day. Good Harbor Beach in Gloucester is one of my favorites, with lots of amenities for families.

If you’d prefer to walk around town, shop at quaint stores, and see art galleries, head to Bearskin Neck in Rockport. Find parking along the street and walk around the pedestrian streets.

Mystic CT was popularized by Julia Robert’s movie Mystic Pizza. However, it also offers some fantastic activities for families.

We love the Mystic Aquarium, which has both indoor and outdoor exhibits. Don’t miss the Beluga Whale exhibit, which is very popular with children.

Adjacent to the aquarium is the Olde Mistick Village, an old-fashioned shopping area with restaurants, boutiques, and more. It’s a fun place to walk around. There’s also Mystic Seaport Village , a recreation of an old seaport village.

Mystic is a convenient location between Boston and NYC. It’s also a stop on the Amtrak Northeast Corridor.

New York City

New York City certainly needs no introduction in this post. I recommend that every family visits at least once. No matter how long your visit is, it’s nearly impossible to see everything in one visit. So, you’ll need to prioritize based on your interests.

Some attractions to consider are the Statue of Liberty , Empire State Building , One World Observatory, Circle Line boat tours, Times Square, the Museum of Natural History, MoMath, the Central Park Zoo, and the Ride NYC. It’s also fun to get tickets for a Broadway show. If you have younger kids, think about going to a matinee.

You may need to make reservations for activities in advance, so it’s good to plan your itinerary before you go. Depending on which attractions you want to visit, a NYC CityPASS could be a great option.

Lincoln Memorial exterior

Washington DC

Like NYC, Washington DC is one of those places where you can spend weeks and still not see everything. Many of these attractions in our nation’s capital do have to be planned in advance because you’ll have to request tickets from your United States Congressperson.

The Smithsonian Museums, including the National Air and Space Museum and the National Museum of Natural History, offer free admission (but may require timed entry tickets). There are also many monuments and memorials, as well as the popular International Spy Museum. While city hotels can be expensive, there are lots of places to stay in the nearby suburbs.

Virginia Beach, VA

Virginia Beach isn’t just a famous beach, it’s also the name of a coastal town. It’s located on the coast of Virginia, in the area where the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean meet. While Virginia Beach, with its 3-mile boardwalk, is the most famous of beaches, there are other beaches in the town.

In addition to visiting the beaches, there are other fun activities for families in the area. I especially love the Virginia Aquarium and Marine Science Center, a world-class aquarium with lots of exhibits. There’s also an adventure park, with zip lines and ropes courses, located adjacent to the aquarium.

Outer Banks, North Carolina

These North Carolina barrier islands are popular weekend vacation destinations. They offer over 100 miles of beaches (including the Cape Hatteras National Seashore). It’s a quiet destination, with vacation homes and resorts for overnight stays.

There are a number of towns that comprise the Outer Banks, including Nags Head and the historic city of Kitty Hawk. If you enjoy vacationing on the beach, this is a great option, especially if it’s within driving distance of your own.

Tree lined street in Savannah

Savannah, GA

Savannah is a gorgeous southern city offering beautiful sites, great museums, shops, and wonderful restaurants. A few years ago, I had the opportunity to visit for two days, and I think it would be a great day trip or weekend getaway. The two days weren’t quite enough time – I think you’d probably want to plan for a long weekend if you want to see several different attractions.

To get a good feel of the city, consider taking an Old Town Trolley Tour . It’s a hop-on, hop-off, tour, so it’s a great way to get around and learn about the different attractions. Current or past Girl Scouts will also want to stop by the Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace.

If you want to visit the beach, Tybee Island is a great option. It’s located not too far from Savannah on the coast of Georgia.

Clearwater Beach, FL

This gorgeous beach has been named one of the best beaches in the United States. It’s a lively area, with lots of waterfront restaurants and resorts, as well as boat tours of the area. It’s also home to the popular spring Sugar Sand Festival.

While you are in Clearwater, I recommend visiting the Clearwater Marine Aquarium. This famous aquarium focuses on rehabilitation and education and is a great place to learn about various marine animals.

Clearwater is a great day trip for a beach day or weekend getaway from other Florida cities. It’s also a great destination on its own.

Saint Augustine, FL

Saint Augustine, the oldest city in the United States, is a charming city with lots to do. In addition to a fantastic shopping and restaurant downtown area, St. Augustine is also located in close proximity to several beaches. It’s a great day trip or weekend getaway from Orlando Florida, especially if you’d like to visit the beaches. Here are some tours you can book .

The Discoveries Of

20 Beautiful Weekend Getaways on the East Coast of the USA

Discover these gorgeous getaways on the East Coast of the USA that are perfect for a weekend break.

If you’re reading this post, you are probably looking for ways to leave your city for an exciting weekend getaway in a new place. As a young professional working on the East Coast, I TOTALLY understand this feeling. During a busy week, I’m always looking for ways to escape the office for a bit and avoid burnout at work.

Sometimes, a weekend trip full of new experiences is all it takes to rejuvenate the body and the mind. That’s why you’ll love these beloved weekend getaways on the East Coast.

Best Weekend Getaways on the East Coast

Savannah, georgia.

Savannah Georgia

Savannah is a jewel of the American South and an enchanting weekend getaway for those looking for culture and lots of relaxed charm.

The first time I went to Savannah, Georgia, the thing that surprised me most was the moss in the trees. I’d never seen anything like it – the spooky way the gray strands hung from the branches in the live oak trees, especially when shrouded in the fog of the morning.

This city is also one of the most historic places in the US, and also supposedly one of the most haunted. Here, there’s no shortage of charming bed and breakfasts, cute shops and market stalls by the riverfront, among many other things to do on a weekend in Savannah.

Kick things off in the Savannah Historic District where you’ll find cobblestone streets, quaint shops and an old-world atmosphere. The Gothic Revival Cathedral of St. John the Baptist is a real highlight.

Given the city’s spooky stories, it’s also fitting to head to the Bonaventure Cemetery, a sprawling mass of intriguing tombstones including the famous “Bird Girl” statue.

Spend a weekend meandering through some of the old neighborhoods in the city, taking a walking ghost tour, or simply sipping on a coffee and people-watching by the river.

Recommended Stays

If you’re looking for an authentic bed & breakfast experience in Savannah, the Justine Inn is super cute and cozy, and offers great value for your money. The Marshall House is a lively, historic boutique hotel located in the heart of the city that many travelers enjoy.

Asheville, North Carolina

Asheville North Carolina

With its charming streets surrounded by gorgeous mountains, Asheville is quite possibly the perfect place for a weekend escape on the East Coast. I’ve always found the city to be quite an unusual oasis that’s otherwise in the middle of nowhere.

Situated in a perfect vantage point in the mountains, we enjoyed some beautiful hikes and drives on the Blue Ridge Parkway. In the evenings, we sipped on local cocktail specialties and ate AMAZING farm-to-table foods and delicious North Carolina style BBQ. There are also great options in the area to plan a romantic east coast weekend getaway.

Of course, the city affords more than just hiking and food. Say Asheville and many people will think of the Biltmore Estate, America’s largest home and a French Renaissance style castle with stunning landscaped gardens.

After something a little more offbeat? Asheville was actually the filming site of a recent Academy Award winning film – Three Billboards – and the state has even made a guide for fans to visit famous scene locations. In fact, art-lovers should rejoice as there are tonnes of galleries and studios – particularly in the River Arts District.

For a cozy, homey good night’s rest, the Princess Anne Bed & Breakfast is a traveler favorite. One of the top-rated, locally-owned Asheville inns is the Albemarle Inn . It’s built in a beautiful, southern-style plantation home and looks comfortable and inviting.

How to Spend the Perfect Weekend in Asheville NC

Shenandoah National Park

Shenandoah National Park

Shenandoah National Park sits just a few hours from Washington, DC, a beautiful mountainous expanse in western Virginia. Whenever I’m feeling stressed and want to disconnect for a while, I pack my backpack and head here… and you should too.

The Appalachian Trail passes right through the park, with miles of hiking trails that are accessible to anyone passing by. One of my favorites is the hike to Old Rag Mountain , a tough trail with scrambles and hella beaut views, but there’s also more relaxed ones, like the Dark Hollow Falls Trail that leads to a beautiful waterfall.

Within the park, and directly outside of it, there are camping areas, lodges, and parking areas for camper vans – perfect for a weekend trip in the wild, without having to drive too far from civilization.

If hiking and camping doesn’t strike your fancy, you can enjoy the picturesque drive through the park on the famous Skyline Drive. There are scenic viewpoints of the Shenandoah Valley and Blue Ridge Mountains every few miles where road trippers can watch the sunset or have a picnic.

For the history buffs out there, the park also has an incredibly interesting and tumultuous history that you can learn about in the visitor’s center.

Taking a hop-on-hop-off bus to the different wineries and breweries in nearby Crozet offers cool respite from the sun (with beverages and snacks to boot!).

The best way to experience the park 24 hours a day is to camp. There are a variety of campsites operated by the National Parks Service available in Shenandoah National Park, many of which have both advanced reservation sites and first-come first-serve spaces. Several travelers in the area recommend Caledonia Farm -1812 Bed & Breakfast in Flint Hill , VA. Situated on a quiet farm, it’s a great place to unwind after long days of hiking, driving, and exploring the park.

Annapolis, Maryland

Annapolis

Rich in maritime history and a glorious maze of charming colonial streets, Annapolis is a delightful destination.

As a laid-back city that’s very much the opposite of Washington, DC, I find myself wanting to stroll through the colored homes and brick sidewalks of Annapolis quite often. Some weekends, I’ll drive out there simply to catch a whiff of the sea air and drink a coffee.

Kick your weekend off by exploring the United States Naval Academy, delving into the nation’s naval history in a Beaux-Arts setting. That done, spend time wandering around the historic downtown, where 18th-century buildings house unique shops, art galleries and cafes.

History-buffs will also want to go to the Maryland State House, the oldest state capitol that’s still in continuous legislative use.

In Annapolis, you can sip on seafood soup, or try on some handmade shoes. Peruse an art shop, or stroll through the colored neighborhoods by the waterfront.

One of the best (and most colorful) B&B’s in the city center is the Academy Bed & Breakfast Just look at it! It’s so cute! Travelers in the area highly recommend the State House Inn .

Portland, Maine

Many people rave about the Portland of the west, but the Portland of the east is equally as wonderful. It’s the perfect blend of gorgeous scenery, stellar food and artsy fun that I absolutely love.

Begin your adventure by exploring the Old Port – a historic district with cobbled streets and 19th-century buildings that house cool boutiques and local art galleries. Head to the Portland Observatory for some of the best views of the city (along with a bit of history too).

I’ll make no secret of it – Portland is a foodie’s paradise. You could spend the weekend sampling lobster dishes and craft beer (a Maine specialty) and call it one well spent.

Or, simply slip on some comfortable travel shoes and wander around the vibrant streets of the city. If you want to get a taste for local living, the farmer’s market in Portland is one of the most well-known in the East Coast, and happens year-round.

Recommended Stays

If you’re planning a stay in Portland, the Inn at St. John provides comfortable accommodations at a great value. One of the most well-known and highest rated boutique hotels in Portland is the Portland Harbor Hotel.

Stowe, Vermont

Stowe Vermont

Stowe, Vermont might be one of the only places on our list that’s actually most wonderful to visit in the fall or winter. While there are tons of things to do in Vermont , Stowe is one of our favorites for its natural beauty and fun outdoor activities.

Nestled in the Green Mountains, September and October bring gorgeous fall colors – reds, oranges, and yellows – to the surrounding forests and hills, while the winter brings snow and some of the best slopes for skiing on the East Coast . Verdant forests and outdoor activities like hiking greet tourists in the spring and summer.

Of course, what you’ll do will change depending on the season but should always involve spending time in the local shops, art galleries and eateries. Take a stroll along the Stowe Recreation Path, a paved trail that winds its way through stunning countryside.

If you’re looking for a truly varied year-round east coast destination, Stowe is the perfect place for you.

For a closer look, read what Amy of Two Drifters has to say about Stowe, Vermont as a perfect romantic weekend getaway !

The coziest-looking (and, coincidentally, the most highly-rated) hotel is a Bed & Breakfast-style hotel called Green Mountain Inn . Open year round, one of the most beloved resorts in the area is the Lodge at Spruce Peak (formerly Stowe Mountain Lodge).

Saint Simons Island, Georgia

Saint Simons Island

Saint Simons is a small island off the coast of Georgia, where many local people have summer homes. Part of the famed Golden Isles, it’s quiet – the perfect place for a weekend respite – and home to miles of beaches and historic sites like Fort Frederica and the lighthouse.

In the summer months, there’s no better way to start your weekend than with some time on the beach. East Beach is one of my favourites, thanks to its pretty shoreline and dolphin-spotting opportunities.

Perhaps the most unique thing about Saint Simons island is its lovely driftwood beach. Spanning for miles, this beach is full of warped driftwood pieces, some the size of entire trees. It’s such a unique and romantic place to walk around and snap a few photos.

The King and Prince Beach & Golf Resort is one of the best and most charming beach hotels you can find on the island.

Harper’s Ferry and New River Gorge, West Virginia

Harpers Ferry New River Gorge

West Virginia is often known for its historic coal mining operations and its rock climbing, but there are also some amazing hiking and skiing opportunities, too.

Within West Virginia, Harper’s Ferry (a national historic park) is a cute little town to visit, marked by Civil War landmarks, brick houses, and sweeping industrial bridges. Did you know that it’s considered to be the site of a raid that helped spark the Civil War?

Delve into the history with a trip to the Harper’s Ferry National Historical Park – a collection of museums and historic buildings that pull you back in time.

That’s not all though, the town is a hiking hub – thanks to its prime position at the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers and landscape dotted with beautiful trails and even better views.

The nearby New River Gorge Bridge shouldn’t be missed either, a magnificent structure built atop a staggering valley. If you’re looking for mountains and woods, West Virginia is an easy and accessible weekend getaway.

For those of you who want to stay local, the Light Horse Inn is one of the most highly rated properties in the area.

Cape Cod, Massachusetts

best day trips east coast

With its tranquil atmosphere and abundance of lavish vacation homes, Cape Cod is a gem on the coast of Massachusetts and one of the most beautiful places to visit in New England .

The miles of beaches here are perfect for wandering around for hours with a loved one. Moreover, there are plenty of wonderful seafood restaurants, golf courses, lighthouses, and shopping areas to explore.

Provincetown, at the tip of the peninsula, is a good place to start. Known for its vibrant arts scene and LGBTQ+ friendly vibes, it’s got a great variety of galleries, shops and seafood restaurants that deserve a weekend exploring themselves.

Of course, there are beaches too – the Cape Cod National Seashore boasts some of the prettiest beaches in the Northeast – with miles of unspoiled coastline stretching out as far as you can see. Add in a couple of lighthouse trips to spots like Nauset Light and you’ve got the perfect itinerary.

Backpackers rejoice! There’s an affordable, clean, and well-located HI Hostel in Cape Cod (Hyannis) for solo or ultra budget travelers. While beach resorts in Cape Cod are a dime a dozen, the Seaglass Inn in Provincetown seems to be the crowd favorite, and it’s just a 4-minute walk to the beach.

Charleston, South Carolina

Charleston

One of South Carolina’s first cities, Charleston captures the charm of a Southern town and mixes it up with the color and quaintness of a modern-day city.

While here, explore wacky colorful homes on Rainbow Row, or check out some of the historic landmarks like the bridges or the lighthouse. Don’t miss the Battery, a historic defensive seawall and promenade that offers must-see views of Fort Sumter and Charleston Harbor.

The nearby beaches in Charleston also boast stunning views and sunsets that are definitely worth visiting!

If you’re a serious foodie, all-you-can-eat oysters await you at Bowens Island Restaurant, or sample southern soul food at one of the many locally-owned institutions.

One of the most chic and best-ranked boutique hotels in Charleston is The Spectator Hotel, but there are a handful of other beautiful choices.

Lancaster County, Pennsylvania

Lancaster County

Drive just a few hours from Philadelphia , Pittsburgh, or Washington, DC and you’ll land smack dab in the heart of Amish country – Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.

It’s not the first place people think of for their weekend escape, but their loss is your gain as it’s perfect if you’re looking for a change of pace and to escape to somewhere quiet for your getaway.

Spend time relaxing in a cabin, go hiking to a nearby waterfall, or take a short steam train ride through some of the most beautiful parts of the area.

That’s not to say there’s nothing to see though – downtown Lancaster has a nice variety of art galleries and quirky boutiques for you to explore. Pop into The Central Market, the country’s oldest continually-operating farmers’ market to pick up some delicious goodies to bring home.

A few of the nicest hotels include the Lancaster Arts Hotel, which is housed in a regal brick building and boasts beautiful, well-designed interiors.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Great Smoky Mountains

One of the most highly trafficked National Parks in the country, Great Smoky Mountains National Park is a wonderful place to get some fresh air and enjoy the outdoors for a weekend.

The park straddles the border between North Carolina and Tennessee and is a great weekend destination thanks to its diverse wildlife, lush forests and of course… those mountains.

Why Smoky? Because, if you get up early enough on a clear day, you can watch the sunrise over misty, fog covered valleys. Head to Newfound Gap or Oconaluftee Valley for the best views.

Here, hiking trails through craggy rocks, expansive valleys, and waterfalls are common. My favorite trail is the Cades Cove Loop for a low-key hike, Clingmans Dome (the highest peak in the park) for when I’m feeling very energetic.  You can also go white water rafting in the nearby Pigeon River.

For a few special weekends in the summer, one of the most interesting natural phenomena in this part of the world occurs – the fireflies in the Great Smoky Mountains have synchronized displays.

Camping is one of the best ways to see the park especially during firefly season, is to camp. You can find additional information and the list of available campsites on the National Park Service’s website .

On the Tennessee side of the park lies a small town called Pigeon Forge, where there are a handful of hotels and lodges. One of the most beloved of these hotels in Pigeon Forge is the Twin Mountain Inn & Suites .

New York City & Upstate New York

New York

New York City is the ultimate weekend getaway for people looking for action!

If you’re looking for a big city getaway that packs a punch, there’s no better place to go than NYC. Even after you’ve been to Times Square and some of the more Instagrammable places in NYC , you can get lost for days exploring the eclectic, historic neighborhoods – and eats – in the city.

For a more peaceful getaway, upstate New York is a fantastic alternative. With many parts just a short train ride or drive from New York City, Upstate New York is the city dweller’s perfect respite.

With the striking Catskills mountains nearby, the topography makes for some lovely views year-round, and there’s great hiking in New York if you know where to look.

In the fall, the leaves turn vibrant colors, illuminating the surrounding farmlands, waterfalls, hiking trails, and scenic drives. It’s easy to rent a cabin somewhere in Upstate New York and simply relax for a weekend, basking in the enjoyment of not doing much of anything.

The Perfect Two-Day New York Itinerary

Bethany Beach, Delaware

Bethany Beach

In the summer, Bethany Beach becomes a hotspot for beach activity on the East Coast, with families flocking to its shores to rent a house for a week and relax.

Vibrant boardwalks, kitschy golf courses, pretty lighthouses, and miles of sandy coastline make up this beach town, and its charm is mainly in enjoying the atmosphere.

Outdoors lovers should venture to the nearby Delaware Seashore State Park for more beaches, as well as some great fishing, boating and kayaking opportunities.

If you get bored of Bethany, nearby Ocean City and Rehoboth offer even more miles of sun and sand. Pack up from nearby Newark, New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, or Washington, DC and head for a relaxing weekend where the sounds of the ocean surround you.

Many travelers recommend staying at the Bethany Beach Ocean Suites by Marriott.

Charlottesville, Virginia

Charlottesville

Charlottesville , Virginia is a mountain city steeped in history, culture, and nature, and is the perfect place to spend a weekend.

Accessible from Virginia, DC, and even areas like Baltimore and Philadelphia, a weekend in Charlottesville can be one of many different things.

History abounds here – kick things off with a visit to the University of Virginia, which was founded by Thomas Jefferson and is also home to a number of art galleries and museums. Same for Monticello, Jefferson’s old home and a UNESCO World Heritage Site that provides interesting insight into his life.

Nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, and with dozens of vineyards surrounding the city, you can sample wines and enjoy the nearby rolling hills.

Or, if adventure travel is more your thing, try hiking, mountain biking, or skiing in the nearby mountains. In the evenings, peruse the Downtown Mall, or simply go stargazing in some of the dark skies nearby.

A hotel fairly close to the city center, the Graduate Charlottesville is located near the University of Virginia, a gorgeous, tree-lined area that’s accessible to all of the main tourist attractions of Charlottesville.

Outer Banks, North Carolina

I look back at summers of my childhood in the Outer Banks quite fondly. My family and I would pile into our van, rent a house for a week, and hang out with friends, whiling away our days on the sandy beaches, exploring a historic lighthouse, or playing mini golf at a cheesy dinosaur course.

Now that I’m back on the East Coast, I’ve been longing to return, even if just for a weekend.

With several different islands and regions, the Outer Banks, or OBX, is a fantastic weekend escape for people who like a bit of energy mixed with a bit of relaxation.

There are several regions of the Outer Banks that are popular with visitors, especially in the summer. Some of the most easily accessible areas are Duck, Kitty Hawk, Nags Head, and Corolla.

White Mountains, New Hampshire

White Mountains

The White Mountains in New Hampshire are quite possibly some of the East Coast’s best-kept secrets.

Although this is a year-round destination, the best time to visit is quite possibly in the fall, when the leaves change colors in the most vibrant ways. Grab a cabin or a room in an inn or lodge, sit back, and enjoy the fall colors in this gorgeous landscape of mountains and valleys.

In Jackson, NH, the Inn at Thorn Hill is a popular and highly-rated choice.

Key West, Florida

Key West Florida

Key West is one of America’s favorite vacation hotspots, but I’d be remiss if I didn’t include it on a list of East Coast weekend boltholes, too.

With its aquamarine water, its luxury resorts, and its nightlife (something lacking in many of these other places), it’s definitely a weekend getaway for the more high-energy of you.

Hop on a boat, ride a jetski, or just watch the world go by for a weekend in one of the most beautiful beach areas of the United States.

The Douglas House is a highly-recommended hotel with a pool and cozy residences that are within walking distance of the beach.

Acadia National Park

Acadia National Park

Renowned by many as one of the most beautiful parks in the country, this guide wouldn’t  be complete without Acadia National Park.

With its stunning shoreline, beautiful hiking trails, amazing stargazing options, and picturesque historic sites, Acadia is a treat for all of the senses. And the sunsets? Super beautiful.

It’s not super easy to get to – a few hours by car from Portland, Maine – but it’s worth it for anyone who truly wants to unplug amidst some of the most beautiful nature the United States has to offer.

There’s no better way to see ANY national park, much less one as stunning as Acadia, than camping. You can find more information about campsites and reserving your space at Acadia National Park here . The best luxury hotel in the area is the Bar Harbor Grand Hotel.

20 Beautiful Weekend Getaways on the East Coast of the USA

I’m Kay. I’m originally from small town Virginia, but have moved all around the East Coast and the United States for basically my entire life. I spent my childhood days blissfully wandering through the Blue Ridge Mountains, rolling in leaves, playing in creeks…you know, the usual overly adventurous 5-year-old stuff.

But those early years spent outside gave me a real problem: I’m now an adventure addict. Basically, if I’m not at my computer banging out articles or photos, I’m probably out hiking, biking, or camping somewhere beautiful.

This is such a great list! Now that I’m based back in my hometown of Charlottesville, I’m definitely on the lookout for more convenient weekend trips. I’ve been to about five of these and am totally adding the rest to my list (and maybe contemplating some return trips – it’s been over 10 years since I was in Asheville!)

From the beaches of Miami to the lighthouses of New England, there is no shortage of variety when looking for unique East Coast weekend getaways, and we adore them all.

While covering everywhere worth visiting on the US East Coast is a project for a lifetime (we’re constantly adding places to our wish list!), when it comes to cities on the East Coast to visit, there are some that consistently rank among the best.

For this guide, we’ve focused (with one exception), on East Coast cities with a population of over 100,000 people.

We love small American towns and beautiful beaches as much as the next road trippers, but we’ll save those for another post.

As the largest city in New England and the birthplace of the American Revolution, Boston is undoubtedly one of the absolute best places to visit on the East Coast.

With its coastal location, gorgeous architecture, a dizzying array of distinct neighborhoods, and world-class museums (not to mention universities), you’ll never run out of incredible things to do in Boston .

We’ve been obsessed with Boston since we spent a summer living there, and will forever count it among our favorite East Coast weekend destinations.

During your trip, be sure to walk the Freedom Trail, relax at the Boston Public Garden and the Common, and enjoy the views from the water on a whale-watching cruise .

When it comes to neighborhoods, make sure to visit the picturesque North End, fashionable Back Bay, and grand Beacon Hill–three Boston neighborhoods you absolutely can’t miss.

No, not Portland, Oregon –the lighthouse-and-lobster loving Portland, Maine!

Known for its charming Portland Head Light, its warehouse-district-turned-trendy-neighborhood of Old Port, and many, many breweries, Portland is an absolute blast to visit.

While you’re there, be sure to take a quick ferry over to nearby Peaks Island for a day, tour the beautiful Victoria Mansion, and enjoy (at least) one afternoon on a sailboat.

Of course, no trip to Portland is complete without snapping photos at the Portland Head Light, but Bug Light deserves a quick look, too!

Portland is also less than an hour by car from famous Kennebunkport–so if you want to mix a famous small town into this weekend getaway on the East Coast, you absolutely can.

Where to Stay in Portland

  • Portland Regency Hotel & Spa : This historic hotel offers a hot tub, steam room, full-service spa, and other luxurious amenities that will truly make your vacation to Portland one to remember!

New York City

How much of New York can you see on just a quick weekend trip?

Enough that you’ll want to come back immediately!

New York certainly can’t be “done” in a weekend–nor can it be done in a lifetime–but the great thing about New York City is that no matter who you are or what your interests are, you can find something to captivate you.

Whether you want to seek out the iconic sights of Midtown , find hidden gems in the outer boroughs, pay a visit to the Statue of Liberty, museum-hop your way through iconic attractions, or simply eat your way through the city, you’ll be able to find all you’re looking for (and more) in New York.

Empire State Building or Top of the Rock: view of Lower Manhattan from Empire State Building

For tourists hoping for the classic NYC experience like we were on our first few visits,  a weekend in New York  is certainly long enough to see many of the highlights that we’ve all seen over and over in movies and shows throughout our lives!

Central Park, Fifth Avenue, Grand Central, Times Square, the New York Public Library, a Broadway show or two, a visit to Top of the Rock or the Empire State Building , the Brooklyn Bridge–on a weekend, you can see all of that and more.

If you’re into museums, we also recommend hitting just 1-2 (no more–there’s too much else to do!) during your weekend in New York: the Met, MOMA, and the Natural History Museum are all great, classic choices.

Where to Stay in New York

  • The Plaza Hotel : For a memorable place to stay, this is one of the most classic and luxurious hotels in New York. It is located right by Central Park, the Rockefeller Center, and some of NYC’s most popular museums.
  • The Renwick: Offering stylish residential style accommodation, this beautiful hotel is equipped with plenty of amenities and high class comfort. It is also a short walk to the Empire State Building and Bryant Park for exploring.

Philadelphia

Philadelphia has been one of the best East Coast cities to visit for centuries, and–like Boston–it features strong ties to the American Revolution.

This is where the Declaration of Independence and the Consitution were signed, touring Independence Hall and visiting the nearby Liberty Bell are among the best things to do in Philadelphia today as a result!

You can’t miss Philly’s food scene when visiting, either–from whoopie pies to Philly cheesesteaks, the city has a (literal) flavor all its own.

kate storm in elfreths alley philadelphia

We loved taking this fun food tour when visiting Philadelphia, and of course, eating our way through Reading Terminal Market.

Be sure to also make time to visit some of Philadelphia’s incredible museums during your visit, including the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Museum of the American Revolution (we loved this one), and touring the dark but fascinating Eastern State Penitentiary.

The Philadelphia Museum of Art is also home to another essential stop in this iconic East Coast City: the Rocky Steps (and if you’re willing to work up a sweat, definitely consider running up them yourself.

Where to Stay in Philadelphia

  • Morris House Hotel : Located right by Washington Square and a short walk from Independence Hall, Morris House Hotel is both a National Historic Landmark dating to the 18th century and a popular boutique hotel!
  • Home2Suites By Hilton : The Home2Suites concept of combining the appeal of a hotel and an Airbnb into one property was excellent (our spacious room had a kitchenette), and the customer service is great.

Washington DC

Our country’s capital city is not only the seat of our national government, but it’s also a fabulous place for a weekend trip on the East Coast!

Museum-goers will be delighted with the enormous array of impressive options to choose from in Washington DC.

Everything from the many Smithsonian Museums, to quirky options like the International Spy Museum, to meaningful stops like the US Holocaust Memorial Museum and the National Museum of African American History and Culture, is available.

There are far more than you can visit in a single weekend, and as a bonus, most DC museums are free to visit!

Those interested in US History and government will also have plenty to keep them busy along the National Mall, including iconic stops like the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial.

Touring the US Capitol is always an interesting experience, and if you plan ahead, you may even be able to tour the White House!

While Washington DC has plenty to offer year-round, there’s no doubt that visiting during cherry blossom season is an incredible (but crowded) experience.

Where to Stay in Washington DC

  • CitizenM Capitol : Another stunning example of CitizenM hotels is this location in Washington DC Capitol. Expect all the style and comfort these hotels are known for.
  • Riggs Washington DC : Located in the former home of Riggs National Bank this iconic building is now home to a classic and beautiful hotel. Rooms are huge and comfortable and offer views of Penn Quarter.

Compared to some of the other destinations in this travel guide, Baltimore is definitely a bit under the radar as far as cities to visit on the East Coast go (unless you’re headed to a Ravens or an Orioles game, of course).

If you’re looking for a coastal American city with plenty of history, art, and food to offer, though, Baltimore has you covered!

The Baltimore Museum of Art, George Peabody Library, Walters Art Museum, American Visionary Museum, and more, will keep any museum-hopper happy.

For American history buffs, Fort McHenry is a must, and for literary lovers, Edgar Allan Poe’s House is tiny but interesting.

When it comes to wandering, the neighborhoods of Inner Harbor, Harbor East, Fells Point, and Little Italy have plenty to explore.

And, of course, no weekend in Baltimore is complete without chowing down on crab cakes!

Alexandria may be located just south of Washington DC, but it can definitely hold its own as a standalone weekend getaway on the East Coast!

Set along the Potomac River, Alexandria is stately and beautiful, with plenty of gorgeous architecture, great food, interesting history, and fun shopping to offer.

Don’t miss the iconic King Street Mile (and if you’re interested in some of the less savory historic stories, consider coming back at night for a ghost tour).

city hall in old town alexandria virginia, one of the best cities on the east coast weekend getaways

The George Washington Masonic National Memorial is a must-see, and you can climb to the top for an excellent view of the city.

As far as museums go, the Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum is a fun stop!

Gadsby’s Tavern –part fine dining restaurant, and part museum–gives modern visitors the chance to dine in the same space where many of the Founding Fathers once plotted against British rule.

Alexandria’s most popular attraction, though, lies just 15 minutes south and technically outside of town: Mount Vernon, the former plantation of George Washington.

Where to Stay in Alexandria, Virginia

  • Hilton Alexandria Old Town is a really fantastic option, rooms are huge and really fresh and bright. The onsite restaurant is really great if you don’t want to venture out early for breakfast. It is also right next to the Amtrak and Metro station, perfect for easy access to explore!
  • StayAPT Suites Fort Belvoir , while a little further off the main spots it is still close enough to access. These are a great budget friendly option if you also prefer self-catering with hotel facilities.

Without a doubt, the small but stunning city of Savannah, Georgia is one of the absolute best East Coast cities for a USA weekend getaway.

It also happens to be one of our favorite cities in the world, and we’ll never stop revisiting it!

Featuring absolutely stunning architecture, 22 of its original 24 town squares, endless oak trees dripping with Spanish moss, and some of the best food in the country, exploring the best things to do in Savannah is always a blast.

While you’re there, be sure to meander down beautiful Jones Street, check out Forsyth Park, hear some of the city’s most enduring legends on a ghost tour , enjoy views from River Street, and take in some of Savannah’s complex history at its various house museums and houses of worship.

Don’t forget to set aside plenty of time to eat!

While there are dozens of incredible  restaurants in Savannah , favorites include The Olde Pink House and The Grey for special occasions, The Collins Quarter for their legendary lavender mocha latte, and Leopold’s Ice Cream for a scoop of their famous Tutti Frutti ice cream.

Have enough time for a quick day trip ?

Tybee Island –also known as “Savannah’s Beach”–is less than a 30-minute drive away, allowing you to easily combine a beach trip and city break!

Where to Stay in Savannah

  • The Marshall House : Featuring a popular included breakfast, a fantastic location in the heart of Savannah’s historic district, and phenomenal reviews, you can’t go wrong with a stay at The Marshall House!
  • Foley House Inn : Easily my favorite hotel that I’ve stayed in while in Savannah, the Foley House Inn is absolutely beautiful inside and out, and has a perfect location right on Chippewa Square.

Beautiful beaches, a unique culture that’s all its own, fabulous architecture, and–of course–plenty of sunshine: you’ll find all of this and far more by heading all the way south to Miami for your East Coast weekend getaway!

When it comes to beaches, South Beach is often considered one of the best urban beaches on the planet, and we’d have to agree.

Don’t limit yourself just to the beach, though!

Kate in a pink dress next to a blue Vespa on Ocean Avenue.

Be sure to explore Miami Beach’s impressive Art Deco architecture, eat your way through Little Havana, admire street art in Wynwood, and check out the views from Biscayne Bay.

For a unique perspective on the city, consider taking a boat cruise –we were very impressed with how much we enjoyed ours!

For those who want to experience some unique nature in south Florida during their trip, consider also planning on a day trip to nearby Everglades National Park.

Or, if you have a few more days (say, an extra long weekend trip), you can road trip all the way to Key West, the southernmost point of the USA!

Where to Stay in Miami

  • Hotel Impala : We love staying here! The room was clean, the shower divine, the customer service lovely, and–most importantly–the location on Collins Ave. was absolutely  perfect.  Located in the heart of the Art Deco district and a five-minute walk from South Beach while still offering a quiet place to sleep at night, Hotel Impala had a location you just can’t beat in Miami Beach.
  • The Marlin Hotel : This hotel offers the chance to stay in one of Miami Beach’s historic art deco buildings! Boasting a fantastic location on Collins Avenue, impeccable customer service, incredible reviews, and spacious suites, the Marlin Hotel is the perfect hotel for those looking for a luxury experience while also seeing a side of Miami Beach’s Art Deco history that not every visitor to the city gets to.

South Pointe Pier in Miami Beach, with view of downtown on the far left and South Beach on the right--definitely visit during your 3 days in Miami!

Colorful, coastal, and downright charming, Charleston makes an absolutely delightful East Coast weekend getaway.

Don’t mistake Charleston for all glamour, though: the city has a national reputation for its incredible food scene, played an important role in two of the USA’s most important wars, and is home to an enormous amount of often heavy history.

While you’re there, be sure to snap photos at beautiful Rainbow Row and The Battery, check out City Market, enjoy Waterfront Park, and tour the Olde Exchange and Dungeon (which is one of the places where the US Constitution was ratified).

The Old Slave Mart Museum is home to heartbreaking history and is an essential stop when working to understand the history of Charleston.

Those interested in US military history will no doubt want to visit Patriots Point to tour the former US naval ships docked there, and pay a visit to Fort Sumter to learn about its history (and enjoy the views).

Beach lovers, don’t miss the chance to check out nearby Folly Beach!

Three-Masted Windjammer

Setting out on the ocean is a freeing experience, but there is nothing quite like setting sail on a tall ship that is propelled only by the wind. One of the great joys of embarking on one of these vessels is the opportunity to learn the ropes – quite literally – by assisting crew in hoisting sails and other essential tasks. This is optional, of course, and guests are welcome to learn and participate in sailing as much or as little as they like.

Tourists will find the best selection of windjammer cruises along the Maine coast, most of which depart from the towns of Rockland and Camden . Boat operators who are part of the Maine Windjammer Association offer all-inclusive overnight excursions, including weekend cruises. There are also sailing schooner cruises out of Bar Harbor on Mount Desert Island , and those interested in the history of these boats and more can visit the Maine Maritime Museum in Bath, Maine.

Tourists who are short on time and want to work this experience into a visit to the Atlantic coast can also find day sailing trips that depart from major ports, including Mystic, Connecticut; Baltimore, Maryland; Key West, Florida; and Boston Harbor and Cape Cod in Massachusetts.

Mystic, Connecticut is one of the state's most charming small towns , home to the fascinating living history museum Mystic Seaport . Here, visitors will find the shipyard as it was in its heyday as a major port town during colonial times, including homes, businesses, and of course plenty of historic ships to explore and admire. Tourists can explore the Mystic River by hopping aboard a coal-fired steamboat cruise operated by the museum.

Mystic is also home to an excellent aquarium with a variety of ocean life, including family favorites like penguins and beluga whales.

9 Easy Weekend Getaways on the East Coast

Hop, skip, or jump to one of these easy getaways you can do in a weekend from the East Coast.

Evie Carrick is a writer and editor who’s lived in five countries and visited well over 50. She now splits her time between Colorado and Paris, ensuring she doesn't have to live without skiing or L'As du Fallafel.

best day trips east coast

You shouldn't need to travel more than a few hours to get yourself to the weekend getaways east coast dwellers love. It doesn't take much to escape the city grind — in just a few hours, freeways, trains, and planes can transport you miles away, and get you back in time for work on Monday morning. And when you're craving island beaches , crisp mountain air, or just an escape from the monotony of the work week, all it takes is a little planning ahead — no long holiday weekend or PTO needed.

So why waste the weekend with a Netflix binge, when you could spend it in a cabana on the iconic pink-sand beaches of Bermuda or the ski slopes near Burlington, Vermont? No matter your taste — from exploring crystal caves to wine tasting — there's an easy east-coast weekend getaway for you.

To get you started, we've done the research for a diverse range of east-coast getaways.

For the ultimate change of scenery — think hammocks strung over turquoise waters, underground caves, and an island vibe — there's nothing like a trip to the island of Bermuda . And thanks to two-and-a-half hour daily flights from New York, an island escape is more than doable. Of all the international weekend getaways the East Coast offers, Bermuda is by far the dreamiest.

The island's swathes of pink sand are one-of-a-kind, so rent a scooter or hop in a taxi to hit Bermuda's best — big names include Elbow Beach, Horseshoe Bay Beach, and Warwick Long Bay. When you've had your fill of seaside fun, explore the other side of the island. Bermuda is home to dramatic underground caves (don't miss Crystal and Fantasy Caves ) and Blue Hole Park , where walking trails traverse coastal cliffs, caverns, and lagoons. Active visitors can walk, run, or bike a section of the 18-mile Bermuda Railway Trail or check out the island's shoreline by kayak.

When it comes to dining options, a fish sandwich and a Dark 'n' Stormy at Woody's in Somerset is a must. For a night of fine dining, head to the capital city of Hamilton for an upscale seafood dinner at Barracuda Grill .

The island is home to an array of high-end, seaside hotels, but it's hard to beat the downtown convenience of the Hamilton Princess & Beach Club or Rosewood Bermuda's tranquil elegance.

Atlantic City, New Jersey

The "Las Vegas of the east" doesn't disappoint those looking for a weekend of glitz and glamour. NJ Transit transports travelers from Philadelphia in an hour-and-a-half, while New Yorkers can get there in three hours via Amtrak and NJ Transit. Drive times from both cities are even less, and the Atlantic City International Airport is there for those coming from further afield.

Visitors can spend the day gambling at Borgata or the Hard Rock before enjoying some tax-free retail therapy. If gambling isn't your thing, the city's legendary beach awaits. After some time spent sunbathing, surfing, kayaking, or windsurfing, explore the adjacent boardwalk.

When hunger strikes, you can experience the tried-and-true fame of Dock's Oyster House , a family-owned business that opened in 1897, or visit celebrity chef Bobby Flay's Bobby Flay Steak and peruse the extensive wine list.

One of the best things about Atlantic City is its array of luxurious, yet affordable, hotels. Book a stay at Ocean Casino Resort , with its multiple pools and five-star ranking, or the Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa , which is home to endless entertainment, nightlife, and dining.

Cape Cod, Massachusetts

In the summer, it's hard to top Cape Cod, home of picturesque lighthouses, seafood shacks, and beautiful beaches. But even in the winter months, the town's mild weather, plentiful golf courses, and breweries and wineries welcome visitors. When it comes to beachy weekend getaways, east coast explorers in New England can rely on the Cape.

From Boston, the trip is just over an hour by car or two-and-a-half hours via CapeFLYER , the weekend passenger train service. If you're coming from New York City, you might want to take a long weekend as the drive to the Cape from the city can take over five hours each way. But the shift in landscape and pace is well worth the trip.

From April to October, head out to sea with Hyannis Whale Watcher Cruises to spot migrating humpback whales. Or take a leisurely hike along the Cape Cod National Seashore , a 40-mile stretch of unspoiled sandy beach that is home to historic lighthouses, monuments, and dunes. Golfers will have 27 public courses and 15 private facilities to choose from, while art buffs will be blown away by the galleries found in every town and village on Cape Cod. After you've explored the Cape, hop on a ferry from Hyannis Harbor to visit the nearby islands of Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket. To save even more time, you could also book a direct Cape Air flight, which services both destinations.

Head to the Lobster Pot , a Cape Cod landmark that serves up seafood classics with bay views. Those looking to be part of history, can stay at The Inn at Cape Cod , a private mansion turned boutique hotel that's almost 200 years old and sits adjacent to 100 acres of nature reserve. There's also the luxe Chatham Inn , an 18-room Relais & Châteaux at the heart of downtown Chatham and Wequassett Resort & Golf Club for an all-encompassing getaway, with a beachfront, golf course and sprawling property.

Long Island, New York

For New Yorkers, Long Island is one of the easiest weekend getaways the East Coast offers. Far beyond the frequented boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens the island forks — with the Hamptons to the south and Long Island Wine Country to the north.

From the city, it's around a two-hour drive, but most New Yorkers hop on the Hampton Jitney or take the Long Island Railroad (both around two hours each way). For an even shorter travel day, booking a charter flight through Fly The Whale will get you to the Hamptons in around 45 minutes. An even faster alternative is Blade , a helicopter shuttle service that can get you from Manhattan to East Hampton in just half an hour.

Once you've settled, get ready to explore. The Hamptons are full of fabulous parties and stunning beaches (don't miss Southampton's Coopers Beach), but after a day lounging, you'll want to expand your horizons and take a ferry to the North Fork. There, you can enjoy views of the Long Island Sound while sipping on wines from local vineyards — don't miss the goods at Corey Creek or Croteaux . If you have a free evening, make time to watch a show at Suffolk Theater , a 1933 Art Deco-style theater.

When hunger calls, swing by the Upper East Side export, TBar in Southhampton, for offerings like fresh sushi and a 40-ounce black angus porterhouse. A stay at the Reform Club in Amagansett is pure luxury, where you'll experience five-star service and amenities paired with the charm of a bed-and-breakfast. Bay Breeze Inn in Jamesport on the North Fork has views of Peconic Bay and is just steps from the beach.

Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Kristjan Veski/Travel + Leisure

You can get to Toronto from the east coast's major cities — New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., and Baltimore — in less than two hours. And no need to worry about lengthy transfers — each city has direct flights, some for around $150.

The Canadian city sits along Lake Ontario's northwestern shore. To get your bearings, rent a bike and cruise along the Waterfront Trail (also called the Martin Goodman Trail). From here, you'll pass Ontario Place and the Harbourfront Centre. If biking isn't your thing, head to the pedestrian-only Distillery Historic District . Set in quaint 19th-century buildings that once housed a large whiskey distillery, you'll find hip restaurants, bars, and boutiques, alongside an array of galleries and theatres.

Grab a drink and some calamari at beachfront Sunnyside Pavilion Cafe on Lake Ontario, or indulge in an evening of fine French dining at Auberge du Pommier . After drinks out on the town, head back to your luxurious room at The Ritz-Carlton, Toronto or the Fairmont Royal York .

Kennebunkport, Maine

This coastal town in southern Maine is as east-coast idyllic as it gets. The town has long, sandy beaches, a lighthouse from 1833, and quaint lobster-fishing villages. The town is 90 minutes from Boston by car, and just over a five-hour drive from New York City. From Boston's South Station, the Amtrak Downeaster takes travelers to Wells, Maine, while the Portland International Jetport is a short 30 miles away.

You can rent a kayak or boat to get out on the water, or try your hand at surfing with a rental from Aquaholics Surf Shop . Make sure to visit and walk along the iconic Goose Rocks Beach and the less-visited Arundel Beach. You can take a boat to Goat Island, home of the active Goat Island Lighthouse from 1833 or visit the Seashore Trolley Museum , the world's oldest and largest museum of mass transit vehicles.

To experience a true Kennebunkport dining tradition, book a table at Alisson's Restaurant , which has been serving American pub grub for over 40 years. You won't want to pass up Rococo Artisan Ice Cream , a quaint ice cream parlor that makes their ice creams onsite using cream and milk from a local, family-owned farm.

The sprawling Nonantum Resort is a family resort with Kennebunkport-style accommodations, award-winning dining, and on-site activities for the entire family. For an unparalleled location, look no further than The Tides Beach Club , the only waterfront hotel on Goose Rocks Beach.

Burlington, Vermont

If you need to escape the city heat, consider a weekend trip to northwestern Vermont. The city of Burlington is just over three hours by car from Boston, and has direct, one-and-a-half hour flights to New York City, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C.

The city is biker friendly and the Lake Champlain Bikeway circles around the entirety of Lake Champlain. When you've worked up an appetite, do a tour of the Ben & Jerry's factory and reward yourself with copious amounts of ice cream. In the winter, explore the nearby ski resorts of Smugglers' Notch Resort and Stowe Mountain Resort (both under an hour's drive away) from your Burlington homebase.

Book a meal at chef Eric Warnstedt's acclaimed restaurant, Hen of the Wood . The ingredients are almost always sourced locally, and an entire page of the menu is dedicated to Vermont cheeses. For a casual evening fueled by pizza and beer, head to American Flatbread for thin wood-fired crust topped with organic toppings. Pair your meal with a beer from the Zero Gravity Brewpub .

For lodging, not much compares to Hotel Vermont , an independent hotel in the heart of downtown.

Charleston, South Carolina

Taylor McIntyre/Travel + Leisure

In Charleston, you'll find yourself in the picturesque world of cobblestone streets, pastel antebellum houses, and waterfront promenades. This otherworldly escape is an easy, two-hour flight from New York City and two-and-a-half hours from Boston.

Spend the day exploring the elegant French Quarter, Charleston's original walled city, where you'll find the iconic 19th-century City Market. Here, you can pick up unique clothing, crafts, and artwork, before spending the afternoon discovering the city's museums — we recommend the Old Slave Mart Museum , where you can listen to a rare audio recording of an interview with a formerly enslaved person. On a sunny day, head to Waterfront Park on the Cooper River or take a ferry across the water to Fort Sumter , where the first shots of the Civil War were fired.

For a night of fine southern dining, head to Peninsula Grill , where you can choose to sit at the champagne bar for light bites (think: oysters, caviar, and lobster) or post up in the posh dining room for the full menu with southern sides like garlic braised butterbeans, speck ham, or hoop cheddar grits. For a quick bite, head to Rodney Scott's BBQ from James Beard-winning pitmaster Rodney Scott. Order a hearty ribeye or pulled pork sandwich and pair it with collards and cornbread.

Book your stay at The Spectator Hotel , where the glittering chandeliers and plush velvet furnishings will make you feel like you've been transported to the Roaring '20s. The on-property, speakeasy-style bar, The Bar, adds to the hotel's charm with its hand-crafted cocktail list and Prohibition-era-inspired interior.

Miami, Florida

Jamie Ditaranto/Travel + Leisure

For a dramatic change in weather and culture, head south. Miami's renowned nightlife, beaches, and food are mere hours from most major east coast cities by plane — less than three from Baltimore and just over three from New York City.

Upon arrival, you'll want to head to the beach to enjoy the tropical climate. The scenic Haulover Beach has beautiful landscaped dunes, picnic areas, and ideal surf conditions, while Lummus Park Beach is a must for sunbathers and those looking for a lazy day of people watching.

When you've soaked up enough sun, grab some lunch at Versailles Restaurant Cuban Cuisine in Little Havana. It's a true Miami establishment and the go-to spot for Cuban food. For seafood, don't miss Joe's Stone Crab in Miami Beach, and for chic, waterfront dining with a Peruvian flare, head to La Mar by Gaston Acurio .

When it comes to lodging, you'll want to be in the center of the action. The W Miami or the boutique Hotel Beaux Arts are in downtown Miami, while The Setai Miami Beach is perfectly located on South Beach.

Perhaps more than any form of travel, the road trip is stamped in the American imagination. And when it comes to an East Coast road trip, no region is as underrated. Sure, it lacks the sprawl of the middle and west of the country , but the vast number of states, four distinct seasons (beyond Florida’s endless summer, that is), and incredible range of cultures prove the East Coast is the coast with the most—and the only possible way to sample its infinite variety is behind the wheel. Here are nine of our favorite East Coast road trip itineraries, including where to stop, where to stay, and what to eat along your drive.

The Chanler at Cliff Walk

Small but mighty: New Haven to Newport

Hit the highlights of two of America’s smallest states, Connecticut (#3) and Rhode Island (#1) with the 100-mile drive along US-1 from New Haven, Connecticut, to Newport, Rhode Island. This journey is a cinch for Bostonians and New Yorkers alike, and is chock-full of underrated pizza spots, scenic cliffs, and, of course, historic mansions. Anticipate the best views along oceanfront Scenic Route 1A in Rhode Island from Westerly to Wickford (At 39.6 miles, that’s a long distance in Rhode Island terms.)

Where to stop: When you stop in Newport, head to the cliff walk, a light and breezy 3.5-mile hike with panoramic bay views and sights of the Vanderbilt estate known as the Breakers, among other Gilded Age mansions. Experience a different side of the Breakers on a “ Servant Life Tour ,” which exposes the back-of-house operations that fueled socialite events at the 65,000 square-foot mansion designed by architect Richard Morris Hunt.

Where to eat: Fuel up at the start of your journey in New Haven with the famed clam pie at Frank Pepe’s pizzeria (as featured on Ugly Delicious among many other hit shows). The accolade-racking pie is well worth the wait.

Where to stay: If you’re itching to splash out, look no further than The Chanler at Cliff Walk in Newport, which has landed on our Readers' Choice Awards . We’re partial to the Martha’s Vineyard villa, with its ocean view and canopied four-poster king bed.

Tropical temptations: Miami to Key West

Florida’s Overseas Highway is a 107-mile highway that connects the southernmost reaches of Miami , near Everglades National Park, to the southernmost point of the continental United States in Key West . It’s about a four-hour drive across countless coral and limestone islets on a two-lane highway, so use the slow-moving traffic as an excuse to stop to sightsee, eat, snorkel, or swim. After crossing the long and narrow seven-mile bridge, look forward to the most beautiful—and famous—parts of the Florida Keys, including Bahia Honda State Park and the self-proclaimed Conch Republic (aka Key West).

Where to stop: Swim among Technicolor tropical fish at either John Pennekamp State Park in Key Largo or Sombrero Reef off Marathon in the Middle Keys. Organized snorkeling tours are available at both. Also get some beach time at Bahia Honda State Park. Sitting at the confluence of the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico at mile marker 37 of US-1/Overseas Highway, this 524-acre beach park has some of the finest stretches of sand in the Florida Keys . There are both secluded and more trafficked spots for sunbathing and excellent photo opps of the largest intact section of Henry Flagler’s elevated overseas railroad.

Where to eat: Where Miami ends and the Overseas Highway begins, there’s an option for taking a secondary road, Card Sound Road, to initially reach the Upper Keys (you’ll then connect to the Overseas Highway). Take the Card Sound detour, and stop for lunch at Alabama Jacks , a waterfront dive bar and eatery with the best conch fritters and mahi mahi sandwiches in the Keys. If opting for the entirety of the Overseas Highway, stop for lunch at Mrs. Mac’s Kitchen , ordering the catch of the day (usually snapper) and an obligatory slice of key lime pie (note: they have whole pies available to-go).

Where to stay: Spend the night relaxing at The Reach Key West, Curio Collection by Hilton , located on a quiet stretch of beach but just a short walk from the bustle of central Key West.

Giving it 100: Vermont Route 100

Spanning more than 200 miles of idyllic New England countryside and almost the entire length of Vermont, this route takes you through countless Norman Rockwell-esque towns. Pass country stores and farm stands and explore the well-traversed stops of Wilmington, Ludlow, Killington, Warren, and Stowe.

Where to stop: In Weston, browse around the Vermont Country Store (est. 1946) where you’ll find everything from old-fashioned fudge to seersucker pajamas. In Brookfield, stock up traditional goat milk’s caramel sauce at the family-run Fat Toad Farm and watch the crew making the good stuff on this working farm (There are no tours per se but you can observe the process during daylight hours most Mondays-Thursdays). Take the time to drive slowly—and stop often—to take in the natural splendor between the mountain ridges of Stowe and Waterbury on the 14-mile Green Mountain Byway (a jazzed-up name for this highly scenic stretch of VT Route 100).

Where to eat: You can get casual authentic Mexican eats at an outpost of the no-frills, Vermont favorite Mad Taco in Waitsfield. In Stowe, dine at Plate , a small and stylish family-owned restaurant that showcases the best of Vermont’s farm-to-table riches and offers incredible vegetarian and vegan options (the veggie burger and vegan “crab cakes” are equally epic).

Where to stay: In Stowe, take in New England’s all seasons outdoor pursuits at the family-friendly (four-legged members included) Lodge at Spruce Peak . Depending on the time of year, pursuits such as hiking, skiing, mountain biking, ice climbing, and canoeing may be on offer. There are also concert series, specialty dining events, movies under the stars and seasonal installations (such as an ice-skating rink in winter), all taking place in the Spruce Peak Village next to the lodge.

Quintessential coastal charm: Portsmouth, New Hampshire to Bar Harbor, Maine

There’s nothing like an extended northern New England coastal drive , dotted with impossibly quaint seaside villages. From Portsmouth, New Hampshire, and all the way up the coast of Maine , roll past endless beaches and fishing harbors, artists’ colonies and historic districts.

Where to stop: Plan to spend a few mealtimes in Portland . Though Maine's is the smaller and lesser-hyped Portland, it’s become a hot foodie city where lots of young chefs—alumni of bold restaurants in New York—have gone to open their own first spots. Further north near Bar Harbor, plan a day in Acadia National Park. Take the 27-mile Park Loop Road, which curves along the boulder-strewn coastline, through dense deciduous forest, and passes sights like the iconic Cadillac Mountain. For more intimate experiences with Acadia, detour on to unpaved roads; or better yet, park the car for a bit and cycle, hike, or venture on horseback on the myriad, carless “carriage roads” that zigzag through the heart of the park. Also, make sure to hit Sand Beach, the only non-rocky beach in the park and arguably Maine’s most stunning swathe.

Where to eat: Besides all the great restaurants in Portland, treat yourself to briny local oysters and local seafood delights at Row 34 Portsmouth. In Camden, indulge in a creative, five-course, wine-paired lobster-tasting menu at award-winning Natalie’s Restaurant .

Where to stay: At one end, check into the cozy Hotel Portsmouth , which screams Americana by design and is within walking distance to the town’s prolific craft breweries and awesome restaurants. At the other, go luxe at the Camden Harbour Inn , a boutique property of Relais & Chateaux pedigree with an enviable location near the harbor action.

Florida beach bliss: Miami Beach to New Smyrna

With scenes that are both cocktail- and kid-friendly, Florida has beautiful beaches to suit every personality. Experience some of the Sunshine State’s superlative spots with a road trip that covers most of 339-mile highway A1A, starting in the flash of South Beach and ending in the unexpected surf town of New Smyrna Beach. After your fill of Art Deco, beautiful people, and parties in Miami Beach, inch up to the wide, sparkling beaches of Fort Lauderdale. Gawk at the mansions of tony Palm Beach and later cross over to the nature-steeped environs of Vero Beach, Melbourne Beach, and Merritt Island, where manatees, sea turtles, and seabirds rule.

Where to stop: Participate in naturalist-led turtle walks during nesting and hatching seasons (June-September annually) at Archie Carr National Wildlife Refuge . Located between Melbourne Beach and Wabasso Beach, the Refuge is the world’s most significant area for loggerhead sea turtle nesting and North America’s most significant area for green turtle nesting. In New Smyrna Beach, hang ten or simply immerse yourself in the surf culture of this small stretch of Florida, which often receives accolades as one of the top surf towns in the U.S.

Where to eat: Experience the Miami trend of restaurant-club hybrids that promise fine dining early evening but all-out throwdowns until the wee hours. Check out downtown’s Sexy Fish , an ocean-themed, seafood-centric, Asian restaurant that dazzles by design, with over-the-top, aquatic-imbued glass mosaics and sculptures plus works by the likes of Damien Hirst and Frank Gehry. On the beach, dress to impress at MILA , a vibe-heavy rooftop Mediterrasian restaurant that attracts Miami’s style set.

Where to stay: To truly take in the pulse of South Beach, consider staying at The Betsy - South Beach , 1 Hotel South Beach , or The Setai Miami Beach —all 2021 Readers’ Choice Award winners. Upon reaching the quieter shores of A1A, settle into a room at the Kimpton Vero Beach Hotel & Spa , located on Central Florida's Treasure Coast.

Brooklyn goes bucolic: A trip up the Hudson Valley

Many New Yorkers will tell you that the Hudson Valley makes for a great trip no matter how much time you have to spend—a day trip , short and sweet overnight, or a weekend getaway road trip from the city , you name it. Zip upstate on I-87 and meander through Beacon, Kingston, and Hudson, each with its own country-cool “over the city thing” vibe (think: Brooklyn in the woods). These destinations can be a road trip on tracks, too. Just hop aboard the Metro North.

Where to stop: A favorite Hudson Valley attraction is Storm King , a 500-acre sprawling lawn where you’ll find sculptures galore and more in an outdoor museum. If you don’t bring your own, rent a bike for the downhill adventure at Windham Mountain Bike Park , the longest jump trail on the East Coast, located about 30 miles west of Hudson.

Where to eat: Backbar may look like an antique garden shop, but it’s actually a bar. The creation of Zak Pelaccio (formerly of Manhattan’s Fatty Crab) is worth driving two hours to Hudson just for the dumplings and tequila-spiked-slushies. In Beacon, sample chef Brian Arnoff’s multi-course menu at his wildly popular Kitchen Sink Supper Club . The menu changes every four weeks based on what’s in season and available and is offered exclusively on Fridays and Saturday evenings.

Where to stay: Make a home base in Kingston at Hotel Kinsley , which is housed in a former State of New York bank building and offers high design in a low-key environment. Alternatively, book Hutton Brickyards , located on a 73-acre riverfront campus that was once home to a brick factory.

Mass magic: Salem to Provincetown

Massachusetts is rife with personality-filled towns and cities, the best of which lie off the 135 miles of highway connecting spooky Salem and the colorful tip of Cape Cod, Provincetown. On the mainland, expect plenty of historical sites, important monuments, and major universities while the curling bicep of Cape Cod via U.S. Route 6 promises riveting marine experiences and a restorative salty breeze, ending in the impossibly fun LGBTQ+ Mecca of Provincetown.

Where to stop: Let Salem cast a spell on you. The city’s prolific 18 th century facades now house the likes of cool coffee shops, pop-up shops, galleries, and boutique hotels. Next, experience a different side of Cape Cod through a once-in-a-lifetime research expedition with Atlantic White Shark Conservancy (AWSC), conducting great white shark research off the southern cape near Chatham. Just south of Provincetown, pop into Truro Vineyards + South Hollow Spirits , which is both a winery and a distillery that makes gin and rum. Once in Provincetown, explore the uninhabited sand dunes of the northern Cape with Art’s Dune Tours or set sail on a highly rewarding whale watch with eco-conscious company Dolphin Fleet .

Where to eat: Experience Boston ’s foodie renaissance at restaurants like Coquette , Wood Hills Pier 4 , and Fox & The Knife . For a fancy Cape classic, dine at the Chatham Bars Inn restaurant. The waterfront dining is on Chatham Harbor, offering those much-needed views and the premium quality seafood to match. The New England clam chowder is legendary.

Where to stay: In Provincetown, settle into AWOL , a seasonal 30-key inn by Lark Hotels, located within walking distance of both Herring Cove Beach and the town’s principal thoroughfare.

Northern exposure: The Cabot Trail, Nova Scotia

Okay, this one's going to mean crossing a border, but the minor inconvenience is well worth it. Head north—way north—to the tip of Atlantic Canada for the 185-mile Cabot Trail , a highly rewarding loop through the wilds of northeastern Nova Scotia, hugging the craggy coastline of Cape Breton Island and traversing the canyons and valleys of Cape Breton Highlands National Park. The well-marked trail is dotted with small towns, fishermen villages, lighthouses, and pubs as colorful as the locals.

Where to stop: Stop in Chéticamp for a riveting zodiac whale watching experience and the chance to see some 10 species in their natural environs (Charismatic pilot whales are most often sighted). Captain Zodiac leads tours during the migratory season (June to September) to marvel at these highly intelligent creatures.

Where to eat: Grab a seat on the oceanfront terrace, and feast on fresh lobster rolls or grilled haddock and scallops at no-frills, Nova Scotian mom-and-pop Seagull Restaurant in Ingonish.

Where to stay: Unpack at the 72-room, waterfront The Lodge at Cabot Links . Golf enthusiasts will appreciate its world-renowned courses, but non-golfers can simply enjoy the views and comforts of the most modern accommodation in all of Cape Breton and a home base from which to explore the far reaches of the Cabot Trail.

Historic southeast: St. Augustine, Florida to Charleston, South Carolina

Journey through coastal American history —and the southern spaces that fully embrace their historic allure—starting at the nation’s oldest city (c. 1565), Spanish-influenced St. Augustine. Then, head to the South’s two most iconic cities, Savannah and Charleston , linked by US-17, where horse farms and churches mix with war relics and towering oak trees. After taking in all the southern charms of Charleston, continue to the tranquil beaches of Sullivan Island.

Where to stop: In St. Augustine, visit the famed yet kitsch “Fountain of Youth” (yes, that Fountain of Youth.) Between Savannah and Charleston on US-17, stop at lesser-known historic site Sheldon Church Ruins, the remains of a circa-1753 church set ablaze first by the British during the Revolutionary War and then by the Union Army during the Civil War.

Where to eat: Savor the cuisine of Charleston's it chef, James Beard winner Mike Lata, at his two institutions, The Ordinary and FIG (which stands for Food is Good). Experience the apex of low country fare at Circa 1886 , where Executive Chef Marc Collins uses regional ingredients and reinterprets recipes and dishes of decades past to create thoughtful dishes that keep culinary history in style (Don’t miss the “Southern Grilled Cheese” a pillow of grilled brioche stuffed with pimento cheese mousse, Surryano ham, and paddlefish caviar).

Where to stay: Stay in the center of Charleston’s historic district at The Charleston Place . Formerly part of the Belmond collection, this iconic hotel has gone independent under the direction of new ownership, which is infusing some $200 million into the storied property.

New England Coast: Boston to Bar Harbor, ME

Portland Head Light rocks

The drive from Boston, Massachusetts up to Bar Harbor, Maine can be done in about four hours on the highway, but it is better to take the scenic route and explore Vacationland’s scenic coast along the way. One of the best East Coast road trips, this one is full of Maine foods like lobster rolls, blueberry soda, and whoopie pies; as well as lighthouses, rocky coasts, quaint small towns, and Acadia National Park .

Full of historic places, coastal towns and rolling mountains, the East Coast of the United States is great to explore by train. You can easily travel between major cities or enjoy a scenic train ride to quieter areas with beaches, parks and even ski resorts. Here are the best Amtrak trips on the East Coast to start planning your rail vacation.

Niagara Falls

Niagara Falls

One of the most majestic sights in the United States, Niagara Falls can be reached via the Empire Service and Maple Leaf Amtrak routes (book tickets to Niagara Falls, NY). Trains depart New York City and other cities in New York state, including Poughkeepsie, Albany and Utica. On the way to the falls, you’ll travel through the beautiful Hudson River Valley and have views of the Hudson River (a fall trip is a great way to see the stunning foliage).

Due to the train schedule, it’s best to stay two nights in Niagara Falls area in order to have a full day to see the sights.

New River Gorge

New River Gorge Bridge

The Cardinal Amtrak route is one of the most scenic on the East Coast, with travel through the New River Gorge in West Virginia. Consider booking your tickets to Charleston, WV from cities including New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington D.C. You can rent a car in Charleston and drive about two hours to reach the New River Gorge National Park (hiking, rock climbing, campgrounds, whitewater rafting). Or simply stay in Charleston until it’s time to board an eastbound train for the return trip back through the gorge.

From Chicago and other Midwest cities, travel to White Sulphur Springs Station to see the gorge and stay overnight at the Greenbrier Resort . One of the many resort activities is whitewater rafting on the New River — fees apply, but transportation is included. Alexandria and Washington D.C. are also good places to end the trip due to the nearby airports in case you want to fly home.

Keep in mind that the Cardinal only runs three times per week, so you may see unavailable dates when searching for tickets.

Montpelier Vermont

A ski getaway, fall foliage destination and charming summer vacation spot, Vermont is a year-round destination. Vermonter trains travel through the scenic Hudson River Valley and views are also beautiful once you are in Vermont, especially in the fall and when snow is on the ground. You can connect with trains on this route in cities including Washington D.C., Baltimore, Philadelphia, New York City and New Haven.

The state capital is Montpelier (pictured above). Book your tickets here for fresh maple syrup, hiking trails at Camel’s Hump State Park and ski resorts, including Smugglers’ Notch (water park open in the summer), Bolton Valley, Stowe Mountain, Mad River Glen and Sugar Brush. The Ben and Jerry’s factory tour in nearby Waterbury is also a must-do if you like ice cream.

In addition to Montpelier, Burlington is another recommended city for an overnight stay. It’s a college town on Lake Champlain with a waterfront bike path , many summer events and nearby ski resorts.

Old Orchard Beach Pier

Maine is a charming summer or fall Amtrak trip from Boston on the Downeaster route . In addition to views of scenic villages, marshes, streams and the coastline, you can get off the train to explore beaches, festivals and nature areas. Book tickets to Wells , Saco or Old Orchard Beach (pictured above) to spend time near the ocean. The  Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge  and Wells National Estuarine Research Reserve are also unique places to visit in Wells, and kids will love  Funtown Splashtown USA  in Saco and the  Palace Playland  in Old Orchard Beach.

Foodies should consider a Maine train trip in the fall to check out the Harvest on the Harbor festival in Portland . September is also a great time for a trip; you can visit Maine’s lighthouses for free during Maine Open Lighthouse Day .

Old Montreal, Canada

Two East Coast Amtrak routes travel to Canada, so if you have a valid passport, you can take an international trip via train. Book tickets on the Maple Leaf to visit Toronto or on the Adirondack to reach Montreal (pictured above). Both trains depart from New York City, and you’ll have wonderful views of the Hudson River Valley before crossing the border.

Which city should you visit? Montreal has a European atmosphere and lots of history and parks to explore. Travel time from New York City is about 11.5 hours. Toronto is larger than Montreal and very cosmopolitan — lots of shopping, entertainment, multicultural neighborhoods — similar to Chicago and New York City. Travel time on Amtrak is about 13 hours from Manhattan. Plan to stay in Canada at least two nights if you want time to sightsee.

West Palm Beach Amtrak Station

Escape the cold weather (or head to the beach any time of year) with an overnight train trip to Florida from major cities on the East Coast. The Silver Meteor , Silver Star and Auto Train travel to many Amtrak stations in Florida . You must transport a vehicle and pay the related fees to travel on the Auto Train, which departs near Washington D.C. and travels non-stop to Sanford, Florida.

There are beautiful water views in Maryland and Virginia, and you’ll go to sleep in the Carolinas and wake up in Florida, making the trip go by quickly, especially if your destination is in North or Central Florida. Popular stops include Orlando (for Universal Studios and Walt Disney World ), Tampa, West Palm Beach, Fort Lauderdale and Miami.

Blue Ridge Mountains

Roanoke, Virginia skyline

Most people use the Northeast Regional to travel between big cities on the East Coast, but trains also travel into Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains. Select Roanoke as your destination, which is in a mountain valley near many hiking trails and places to mountain bike and paddle . As a bonus, the Virginia Museum of Transportation is in town, which has many railroad exhibits.

Due to the train schedule, you’ll need to stay in Roanoke at least one night. Plan to stay two or more if you want to take a drive on the scenic Blue Ridge Parkway , visit local attractions or enjoy the many outdoor activities. You’ll also need to start this trip north of the mountain range, such as in Charlottesville, Alexandria, Washington D.C., Baltimore, Wilmington, Philadelphia or New York City.

Allegheny Mountains

Alleghany Mountains in Pennsylvania

The Capitol Limited route also provides mountain and river scenery on the East Coast. Trains travel through the Allegheny Mountains in Maryland and Pennsylvania, plus stop in two historic mountain towns: Harpers Ferry, West Virginia and Cumberland, Maryland . Both destinations are near hiking trails and historic attractions, plus you can ride the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad in Cumberland.

To quickly get to the most scenic part of the trip, start in Washington D.C. From there, you can travel 3.5 hours to Cumberland or stay on the train for a few more hours until Pittsburgh . You can also start the trip in Chicago and from cities in Indiana and Ohio and travel overnight to reach the mountains. Plan your trip in late spring or summer to view the most scenery.

Dutch Country

Amish farm in Lancaster, Pennsylvania

The Keystone Amtrak route travels through Dutch Country farmland from New York City, Philadelphia, Newark (including the airport station) and other cities on the East Coast multiple times each day. It’s a relaxing day or overnight trip that’s great for families, couples or solo travelers. Exit in Lancaster to learn about the Amish community, purchase local food at Central Market or have a fun-filled day at Dutch Wonderland .

Harrisburg , Pennsylvania’s capital, is another destination to plan a trip around, especially in the summer. The charming city is on the Susquehanna River, and top attractions include the National Civil War Museum and State Museum of Pennsylvania . Hersheypark and Hershey’s Chocolate World are also about a 25-minute drive away. Uber and Lyft are transportation options if you don’t want to rent a car.

New Orleans

New Orleans French Quarter

For a long-distance train adventure, New Orleans is at the end of the Crescent route, which departs from many cities on the East Coast. You’ll travel through small towns and cities in the Southeast before crossing over Lake Pontchartrain via the longest railroad bridge in the United States.

Be sure to check out the amazing food, music and festivals in New Orleans while you’re there. You can walk or ride streetcars around the city to explore the Garden District , French Quarter , Jackson Square and old cemeteries . Other top sights include the National World World II Museum , Audubon Zoo and the New Orleans Museum of Art .

Plan to stay in New Orleans at least two nights if you want to have a full day in the city. You can then take a train or flight back to the East Coast or continue your rail vacation by booking tickets on the Sunset Limited or City of New Orleans routes. Trains on these routes depart from New Orleans and travel through Texas, Arizona, California, Mississippi, Tennessee and Illinois. Top destinations include Chicago, Memphis, Houston, San Antonio, Palm Springs and Los Angeles.

Old-growth forests, towering waterfalls, and trails steeped with history: there is something magical about backpacking trips on the East Coast. Along with the dramatic cliffs and lush, green forests, one of the most prominent East Coast hiking attractions is the Appalachian Trail (AT). This long-distance trail stretches approximately 2,200 miles from Georgia to Maine but offers endless shorter multi-day hiking options.

Unsure about where to go for your next hike? You can find outstanding opportunities for backpacking all up and down the Eastern Seaboard. However, this guide will highlight five of the best backpacking trips on the East Coast, specifically in Tennessee , North Carolina , and Virginia.  Before planning your next backpacking trip, check out the trips we’ve outlined below so you can experience all the beauty the East Coast has to offer!

All Inclusive Backpacking Trips

Hiking on the East Coast: Considerations

Before diving into the hikes, take a look at a couple of considerations for hiking in this region:

  •  The East Coast has a temperate climate, so it receives lots of rainfall, especially in the spring and summer months. Be sure to bring a raincoat and rain cover for your backpack (even if rain isn’t in the forecast!) – to avoid lugging around a sopping wet pack.
  • Wildlife abounds in this part of the word. While hiking brings us closer to wildlife, it’s essential to stay safe during encounters. Black bears inhabit many of the mountainous areas on the East Coast, so do some research and acquire any necessary bear-proof gear. Some areas require bear canisters for storing food. In other areas, bear spray may be prohibited. It’s always a good idea to do some research beforehand so you can hit the trail prepared.

1. Art Loeb Trail, North Carolina

Mileage: 30.1 miles point-to-point | Length: 3 – 5 days | Elevation Gain/Loss: 8,250 feet

The Art Loeb Trail in the Shining Rock Wilderness of western North Carolina is widely noted as one of the best hikes in North America. The trail’s impressive attributes, like the spectacular panoramic mountain views and over 30 miles of rugged terrain, make it a premier choice for intermediate and advanced hikers. This route also traverses many significant peaks, including Black Balsam Knob (6214 ft.), Tennant Mountain (6040 ft.), and Pilot Mountain (50,72), so don’t forget your camera at home!

trail description

Hiking from south to north is the most popular route direction because you save the best views for last, providing payoffs for those hard-earned miles. The trail starts at the Davidson River Campground, five miles from Brevard, and 30 miles from Asheville. The first 12 miles are a steady uphill and you’ll trek past Cedar Rock Mountain (4,055 ft.) and Chestnut Mountain (3,688 ft.). Along the route, you’ll encounter several campsites that are perfect for your first night’s rest.

The steepest part of the trail comes after about 12 miles as you make your way up Pilot Mountain, the site of a former lookout tower. It boasts spectacular views of Looking Glass Rock and the Balsam Mountains. After spending a few minutes taking in the impressive views, you will be pleased to discover a much flatter trail from Silvermine Bald at mile 17 to Stairs Mountain at mile 23.

The final six miles of the trail are a gradual descent past Cold Mountain. This destination was popularized by the 1997 novel Cold Mountain , written by Charles Frazier, and subsequent major motion picture by the same name. Once you reach the end of the trail (Daniel Boone Boy Scout Camp in Canton, NC), you can high-five your friends before hopping in your car or grabbing a shuttle back to your starting trailhead.

Looking for a shorter hike or wanting to simplify logistics? You can still experience the beauty of Art Loeb by hiking portions of the trail or connecting nearby trails to create a shorter loop.

Logistics and Permits

There are no permit requirements for accessing Art Loeb Trail. This route is point-to-point and ends in a different location than it started, so you’ll need to work out some logistics. However, convenient shuttles can transport you back to your car, including the Pura Vida Adventures shuttle .

This backpacking trip can be done as an all-inclusive guided adventure. Click here to learn more! Or, if you’re not into the idea of carrying a multi-day backpacking (30-40 lbs), consider a portered trip .

2. Appalachian Trail: Carvers Gap to US 19E, North Carolina

Mileage: 17 miles point-to-point | Length: 2 – 3 days | Elevation Gain/Loss: 2,400 feet

Spruce fir forests and grassy mountain balds dotted with wildflowers in the spring: it’s easy to see why Carvers Gap is often considered the most scenic stretch of the Appalachian Trail. This 17-mile point-to-point trail travels through Cherokee National Forest, over Roan Mountain, Yellow Mountain, Little Hump Mountain, and Hump Mountain. There are several options for hiking Carvers Gap, but this popular route along the AT provides a journey with many scenic vistas through mountains steeped in history. Troops marched through these mountains during the Revolutionary War.

trail Description

This backpacking trip begins at Carvers Gap parking lot, which is on the NC/TN border about 40 miles southeast of Johnson City and 65 miles northeast of Asheville. After about four miles on the AT, you’ll reach the Stan Murray Shelter, which has several primitive campsites. Two miles later, you’ll arrive at Overmountain Shelter, one of the most popular camping spots on the AT that provides stunning views of the Roaring Creek Valley.

At mile 8, make sure to stop at Little Hump Mountain for a snack to enjoy the 360 valley views. A few miles of steep terrain later, you’ll reach the summit of Hump Mountain, a grassy bald offering commanding views of Sugar Mountain and Grandfather Mountain. If you like to take mountain views with your morning joe, stay at the campsite up on the summit!

Due to the trail’s exposed peaks, it’s important to pack adequate sun and rain protection when hiking this portion of the AT. Also be sure, as always, to monitor weather forecasts before heading out on the trail.

Logistics and Permits

You don’t need a permit to backpack in the Cherokee National Forest. However, this hike is a point-to-point trek, so you will need to coordinate a shuttle or a ride to pick you up at the end of the trail.

One popular option is to park your car at The Station on US 19E (where the hike ends) and have a shuttle take you to the Carver Gap Trailhead (where it begins). This trail can be busy in the summer months, so you’ll want to reserve your shuttle ahead of time, which you can do on the Roan Mountain Shuttle website .

3. Three Ridges via Appalachian Trail, Virginia

Hikers sit at an overlook in the Three Ridges Wilderness

Mileage: 13.3 mile loop | Length: 2 days | Elevation Gain/Loss: 4,290 feet

Looking for a fun weekend backpacking loop that has it all? Three Ridges might be the backpacking trip for you. This well-maintained loop is rated as moderately strenuous, but its many vistas, towering waterfalls, and sparkling swimming holes will have the miles flying by. Many locals day hike on this trail, but the camping in Three Ridges Wilderness should not be missed.

Parking for this loop is at Reeds Gap, which is located 30 miles southwest of Charlottesville, just off of the Blue Ridge Parkway. The trail starts on the AT and gradually climbs up Meadow Mountain and Bee Mountain, past Maupin Field Shelter and the intersection for Mau-Har Trail (which will be your return route). Once you reach Bee Mountain, continue for 2.5 miles and take in vista after vista until you reach Chimney Rock Overlook. Here, you’ll get lovely views of Bolton Mountain and Cat Rock Mountain.

After a well-deserved break at Chimney Rock Overlook, you’ll hike 1.8 miles to Harpers Creek Shelter, the main camping area in Three Ridges Wilderness — and an ideal spot to set up camp. Just after the shelter, you will cross Harpers Creek, and shortly after that, you will reach the Mau-Har trail. Be sure to stop at nearby Campbell Creek, where you will find several refreshing waterfalls and many inviting swimming holes.

The trail is a lollipop trail (a loop trail connected by a short out-and-back trail). So, on your way back via the wooded Mau-Har trail, you will hop back on the AT, just past the Maupin Field Shelter. Then,  you’ll retrace your steps to the parking area at Reeds Gap. Once you have all of your gear packed up, head to nearby Devil’s Backbone Brewery or Blue Mountain Brewery for some well-deserved R&R.

There is no permit required to backpack in Three Ridges.

4. Triple Crown Loop, Virginia

Mileage: 35 mile loop | Length: 3 – 5 days | Elevation Gain/Loss: 8,200 feet

The Triple Crown Loop, just outside Roanoke, is one of Virginia’s most popular backpacking loops – and for good reason. This 35-mile trail covers stretches of the Appalachian Trail. It features well-maintained trails, steep climbs, and rock scrambles which lead to spectacular views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Looking to check a few summits off your list? Then you’ll love the Triple Crown Loop. As the name suggests, this hike will lead you to the summits of three prominent Virginia peaks: Dragon’s Tooth, McAfee Knob, and Tinker Cliffs.

Trail Description

The parking for this hike is at Catawba Mountain Parking Area off of Route 311 in Catawba, VA. This route begins northbound on the Appalachian Trail. After 2.5 miles, you’ll reach Catawba Shelter, which is a popular camping spot for catching the sunrise at McAfee Knob, which is just 1.5 miles away. Once you reach McAfee Knob, you can feast your eyes on the expansive views of the Catawba Valley and North Mountain Range.

Eight miles of switchbacks later, you’ll reach Tinker Cliffs. After 4.5 miles and a few wobbly bridge crossings, you’ll reach the Andy Layne Trailhead. The trail will take you up and past North Mountain before reaching Dragon’s Tooth Trail. Dragon’s Tooth is definitely the most challenging of the three peaks, with rock scrambles and steep climbs – especially with sore legs. But, it’s well worth the effort for its outstanding views of the surrounding mountains.

There is no permit required to access Jefferson National Forest. Please note that camping/campfires are not permitted on McAfee Knob or Tinker Cliffs.

5. Mount LeConte via Trillium Gap Loop, Tennessee

best day trips east coast

Mileage: 16 mile loop | Length: 2 –3 days | Elevation Gain/Loss: 4,026 feet

The Mount LeConte Loop in Great Smoky Mountains National Park is a challenging, yet rewarding, loop. This trail involves hiking to the summit of Mount LeConte (6,593 ft), which is the third highest peak in GSMNP. There are several different ways to summit Mount LeConte, but we recommend creating a loop via the Trillium Gap Trail. Along the way, you’ll get to gaze at two waterfalls: Grotto Falls and Rainbow Falls. The latter gets its name from the rainbows that appear through the mist in the late afternoon sun.

Trail Description

This 16-mile loop starts at the Grotto Falls parking area near GSMNP’s Sugarlands Visitor Center, five miles from Gatlinburg, Tennessee. The first part of the trail meanders through an old-growth forest. In the spring, the woods are dotted with many wildflowers like white and yellow trillium and white violets. After 1.3 miles of easy hiking, you’ll reach Grotto Falls: the loop’s first waterfall which stands at a towering 25 ft tall. The trail continues behind the waterfall, gradually increasing in grade on the way up to Trillium Gap.

After six miles of switchbacks through the dense forest, you’ll reach the top of Mount LeConte, where you will find LeConte Lodge and its historic log cabins, gift shop, and food service. The LeConte Lodge sits at 6,360 ft, making it the highest lodge in the eastern United States. If you are up for a little extra mileage, take the spur to Cliff Top for incredible sunset views – you won’t be disappointed.

All backcountry camping in Great Smoky Mountains National Park requires a permit, which you can obtain on the park’s website . Campfires are not permitted at Mount LeConte. If you do wish to stay at one of the cabins at LeConte lodge, it is recommended that you book far in advance, if possible. You can find more information about reservations on LeConte Lodge’s website.

7 Best East Coast Road Trip Ideas

T he Northeast is the perfect region for a road trip. Filled with diverse cities and towns, the East Coast offers ski resorts, beaches, attractions, history, and so much more.

Road trips can be a great way to be more impulsive in your travel because you aren’t going to be bound by flight reservations. They can also be a wonderful way to save money on your vacation. When road-tripping, you don’t have to pay for airline tickets or rent a car.

If you are thinking of road tripping, and are looking for some inspiration, here are 7 East Coast road trip ideas. I’ve selected specific start and end points for demonstration, but keep in mind that you can adjust these trips based on where you live and where you want to end up. If you are looking for an epic East Coast road trip itinerary, you may consider combining some of these road trips along the East Coast to make a longer trip.

Here are some tips for long road trips if you plan to be in your car for a while.

7 of the Best East Coast Road Trip Ideas

Canada – boston road trip.

I have so many fond memories of traveling to Canada each summer from my home in Rhode Island. If you live in the Northeast , there are several great Canadian destinations to visit, including Toronto, Niagara Falls, Montreal, and Quebec City .

Our favorite road trip to Canada is from Boston to Quebec City. There are two main routes to take, and to see more sites, you may want to take one route on the way there, and one route on the way back.

The first route takes about 7 hours and goes through the White Mountains National Forest . We typically try to stay overnight part of the way through that trip – usually stopping in Lincoln, New Hampshire.

Our pick in Lincoln, NH is the Mountain Club on Loon

  • Great location
  • Nice family rooms
  • Indoor and outdoor pools

The second route takes about an extra half hour and goes through Maine, including the southern coast of Maine. Although it isn’t halfway, you may consider staying in Portland, Maine . There’s so much to do, including some fantastic restaurants and great shops.

Our pick in Portland Maine is the Press Hotel

  • Fantastic theme with some great fun touches
  • Member of the Autograph Collection

If you’d rather visit Montreal, you’ll travel through both New Hampshire and Vermont. A good stopping point is right on the NH/Vermont border, near Hanover, NH. That trip, from Boston to Montreal, takes a little over 5 hours. It can definitely be done in a day, but it’s also nice to stop over in New Hampshire/Vermont on your way.

See hotels in Hanover, NH

New England Road Trip

You could easily explore much of what New England has to offer with a road trip. For this type of trip, you’ll want to start and end at the same point. There are so many scenic drives as well as historic sites in the area.

During your trip, you may want to visit the following places:

  • Rockport, MA
  • Lake Winnipesaukee, NH
  • Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor
  • Lincoln, NH
  • Cape Cod, MA
  • North Conway, NH
  • Portland, Maine
  • New Haven, CT
  • Newport, RI

A few years ago, we did a culinary road trip from Portland, Maine to New Haven, CT. This trip was a great way to sample some delicious food and see some fabulous museums. Make sure you do research in advance to figure out which attractions you definitely want to see on this type of trip.

If you aren’t from the New England area, I’d recommend starting and ending your trip in Boston. It’s a good central location, and that’s the largest of the airports in the area. Getting a flight to Boston from most larger United States airports is pretty easy.

Northeast – Florida Road Trip

When I was a kid, my family road-tripped from our home in Rhode Island down to the Orlando area in Florida several times. This journey, which takes about 24 hours, can seem very long. But there are also some great places to stop along the way.

To break things up, you’ll want to have several drivers or stop at least overnight. You can also make several stops, seeing varying sites along the way.

For much of this trip, you’ll be traveling down I-95. Ideas for stops include:

  • New York City
  • Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
  • Washington DC
  • Richmond, Virginia
  • Fayetteville, North Carolina
  • Savannah, Georgia
  • Jacksonville, Florida
  • Daytona Beach, Florida
  • St. Augustine, Florida (the oldest city in the United States)

Other popular spots, like Bethany Beach Delaware, and Charleston South Carolina, would be detours of the route. But if they are must-dos, definitely built some time for those side trips.

Typically, we would do this type of road trip to visit Walt Disney World. However, you could definitely go beyond that, and visit the Southernmost point of the United States, all the way in the Florida Keys at Key West. Just keep in mind that you will likely need to make several overnight stops. Those are best reserved in advance for the best availability.

Northeast – Outer Banks, North Carolina

The Outer Banks of North Carolina is a popular summer destination. If you are thinking of traveling there, a road trip from the Northeast can be a great option. Overall, the trip will take about 12 hours (depending on where you depart from), and there are several stops you can make along the way.

  • New York City, NY
  • Norfolk, Virginia
  • Virginia Beach, Virginia

Boston-Washington DC Road Trip

A few years ago, we drove from our home in the Boston area to Washington DC. This trip takes about 8 to 8 ½ hours if you drive straight through. However, if you are trying to make it more of a journey, there are several East Coast road trip stops you can make along the way.

  • Hartford, Connecticut
  • New Haven, Connecticut

During our trip, we decided to leave after school on the last day before spring break. So, we drive in the evening until we reached Greenwich, CT. We stayed overnight there and then continued on to DC. On our way back, we wanted to get home, so we drove the whole way back straight through.

If you want to stop at multiple cities for a longer stay, I’d recommend stopping in NYC and Philadelphia. These two large US cities offer so many attractions and historical sites that they are great for a family vacation.

Our pick in Philadelphia is the Canopy by Hilton Philadelphia City Center

  • Fun boutique hotel
  • Unique rooms
  • Fantastic location

Boston-NYC Road Trip

It’s a short trip, but there are tons to see on the journey from Boston to New York City. It’s a bit longer, but if you are looking to see a few places along the way, I’d recommend taking Route 95. This trip will take you through Rhode Island and the coast of Connecticut.

On your trip, you can stop in Mystic, Connecticut, and New Haven, Connecticut to visit their attractions and eat the delicious local food (don’t miss trying the iconic New Haven pizza).

You can easily do this trip in one day. If you do choose to do that, I’d recommend picking one attraction in Mystic to visit. With younger kids, the Mystic Aquarium is probably the best choice. It’s one of my favorite aquariums and is usually a big hit with kids.

Revolutionary War/Hamilton Road Trip

The East Coast is home to so many US history sites that you could easily plan a road trip right around those sites. One idea is a Hamilton road trip, which will take you to many of the sites mentioned in Hamilton: An American Musical.

For this road trip, I’d recommend the following stops. This itinerary starts in the south and moves north, but of course, you could do it in the opposite direction.

  • Yorktown Battlefield Virginia (Mentioned in the song Yorktown (the World Turned Upside Down)
  • Monticello (Mentioned in the song What Did I Miss?) – Charlottesville, VA)
  • James Madison’s Montpelier (not explicitly mentioned in the musical, but Madison is a main character in the second act)
  • George Washington’s Mount Vernon (Mentioned in Right Hand Man and Stay Alive)
  • Washington Monument/Thomas Jefferson Memorial (Washington Monument mentioned in Who Lives, Who Dies, Who Tells Your Story)
  • The Bureau of Engraving and Printing
  • Weehawken, NJ (Mentioned in My Obedient Servant)
  • Richard Rodgers Theater, NYC

When is daylight saving time 2024? Millions have sunsets after 6 pm as time change approaches

best day trips east coast

Do you feel it in the air? Spring is coming, and the start of longer daylight hours is well underway.

And with daylight saving time starting in March, most Americans will soon have even more hours in the sun. Even ahead of of the time change, there are already cities in every continental U.S. time zone that are reporting sunset times after 6 p.m. as the Earth and the Northern Hemisphere begins its tilt toward the sun.

The time adjustment affects the daily lives of hundreds of millions of Americans, prompting clock changes, contributing to  less sleep  in the days following and, of course, later sunsets.

Here's what to know about the start of daylight saving time in 2024.

When is daylight saving time in 2024?

Daylight saving time will begin for 2024 on Sunday, March 10 at 2 a.m. local time, when our clocks will go ahead one hour, part of the twice-annual time change that affects millions, but not all , Americans.

Have the days been getting longer?

The winter solstice, which occurs annually on Dec. 21, is the day with the shortest daylight hours each year. Since then, the days have been gradually getting longer.

Because the sun rises in the east and sets in the west , cities that are located eastward experience sunrise before more more westward cities.

Ahead of daylight saving time, which starts this month, some areas are already experiencing later sunset times. On the East Coast, parts of states like Maine , New Hampshire , Vermont , New York and Connecticut are already recording sunsets after 5:30 p.m. ET, according to TimeandDate.com .

Sunset times get later as you move westward though time zones, and cities on the western edge of Eastern Standard Time like Detroit and Indianapolis have sunsets around 6:30 p.m. ET.

The same concept plays out in each of the continental United States' four time zones, with cities on the easternmost edge of each time zone recording sunset times roughly between 5:30 and 5:45 p.m. local time.

What is daylight saving time?

Daylight saving time  is the time between March and November when most Americans adjust their clocks by one hour.

We lose an hour in March (as opposed to gaining an hour in the fall) to accommodate for more daylight in the summer evenings. When we "fall back" in November, it's to add more daylight in the mornings.

When is the spring equinox?

In the Northern Hemisphere, the vernal, or spring equinox is March 19, marking the start of the spring season.

When does daylight saving time end in 2024?

In 2024, daylight saving time will end for the year at 2 a.m. local time on Sunday, Nov. 3. It will pick up again next year on Sunday, March 9, 2025.

Is daylight saving time ending permanently?

The push to stop changing clocks was put before Congress in the last couple of years, when the U.S. Senate unanimously approved the  Sunshine Protection Act  in 2022, a bill that would make daylight saving time permanent. However, it did not pass in the  U.S. House of Representatives  and, therefore, was not signed into law by President Joe Biden.

A  2023 version of the act  remained idle in Congress as well.

Does every state observe daylight saving time?

Not all states and U.S. territories  participate  in daylight saving time.

Hawaii and Arizona (with the exception of the Navajo Nation) do not observe daylight saving time, and neither do the territories of American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Because of its desert climate,  Arizona  doesn't follow daylight saving time. After most of the U.S. adopted the Uniform Time Act, the state figured that there wasn't a good reason to adjust clocks to make sunset occur an hour later during the hottest months of the year.

The Navajo Nation, which spans Arizona, Utah and New Mexico, does follow daylight saving time.

Hawaii is the other state that does not observe daylight saving time. Because of its proximity to the equator, there is not a lot of variance between hours of daylight during the year.

U.S. climate outlook for March 2024

Meteorological winter is now in the rearview mirror, and once again, winter was largely a big disappointment for cold and snow lovers across most of the United States. Despite the first measurable snowfall in the large cities of the Northeast in about 2 years, winter snow totals in that region were again well below average, and temperatures across the country averaged above normal from coast to coast, likely resulting in the warmest winter in the historical record for the country. (NOAA will release the national climate summary for February and the 2023-24 winter this Friday, March 8). Cold and snowy weather can still occur during March, so let’s see what NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center (CPC) predicts for the upcoming month. Will the mild weather continue or will Mother Nature finally deliver some cold and snow to the country?

U.S. map showing March 2024 temperature outlook probabilities

The temperature outlook for March 2024, showing where the average temperature is favored to be much warmer than average (orange and red), near average (gray), or much cooler than average (blues). Darker colors mean higher chances, not more extreme temperatures. White areas mean that there are equal chances for a warm, cool, or near-average March. Much warmer or much cooler than average  means "in the upper or lower third" of March temperatures from 1991-2020. For more details on how to interpret these maps, read our explainer  Understanding NOAA's monthly climate outlooks.

On February 29, CPC released its updated monthly climate outlooks for temperature, precipitation, and drought across the United States for March 2024. The temperature outlook favors well above normal temperatures across much of the central and eastern parts of the nation, with well below average temperatures favored in California and parts of the Southwest. The precipitation outlook favors well above average precipitation (rain and/or snow) across large parts of the western, central, and eastern parts of the country, with well below average precipitation only favored in small parts of the Upper Midwest and Southern Plains.

U.S. map of precipitation outlook chances for March 2024

The precipitation outlook for March 2024, showing where the average precipitation (rain and snow) is favored to be much higher than average (greens), near average (gray), or much lower than average (browns). Darker colors mean higher chances, not more extreme precipitation departures. White areas mean that there are equal chances for a wet, dry, or near-average March. Much higher  or much lower than average  means "in the upper or lower third" of March precipitation amounts from 1991-2020. For more details on how to interpret these maps, read our explainer  Understanding NOAA's monthly climate outlooks.

Below, I’ll provide more detail about the outlooks and discuss the basis for them. I’ll also examine the current state of drought, how it changed during the prior month and winter, and how CPC expects drought to change during March. Also, remember that the colors on the temperature and precipitation outlook maps only provide information about the most likely outcome, but other outcomes are still possible, although less likely to occur. More details about interpreting the outlooks can be found here .

The updated outlooks were produced considering the Week 1 forecast from the Weather Prediction Center (WPC), and CPC’s own Week 2 and Week 3-4 outlooks. Other tools that forecasters examined this month were longer-range forecast models such as the Global Ensemble Forecast System (GEFS), the Climate Forecast System (CFSv2), and products derived from these models.

El Niño began to weaken during February across the tropical Pacific as expected, but despite weakening, it was still categorized as strong, with impacts to the global climate likely continuing for the next few months. Therefore, it was again considered as the dominant teleconnection for the March outlooks. The Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO)—a conjoined area of heavy rains and clear, calm skies that travel the tropics together as a couplet—remained active, with its heavy rains located over the Indian Ocean at the end of February. Since computer models are in good agreement for it to strengthen and propagate eastward across the Maritime continent during the first half of March, MJO impacts also played a role in the March Outlooks.

Temperature outlook

The March temperature outlook favors well above average temperatures on a line from central Montana southeastward through eastern Texas and all locations eastward. In contrast, well below average temperatures are favored in California and parts of the Southwest. The highest odds for a warmer-than-average March reside in the Northeast, where probabilities exceed 70%. Maximum probabilities for below-average out West are more modest, topping out at less than 50%.

Well above average temperatures are strongly favored in the eastern half of the nation during the first two weeks of the month. Confidence is quite high in the Northeast, as the location of the MJO will favor ridging (jet stream shifted north of its normal position) over eastern North America during the first 2 weeks of the month, which agrees quite well with short-, medium-, and longer-range model forecasts. Although probabilities for warmth are lower, CPC’s week 3-4 temperature outlook also favors above-average temperatures during the end of March for the northeastern quarter of the country. With odds also favoring above-average temperatures in all CPC outlooks, probabilities exceed 50% in the Midwest, Ohio Valley and mid-Atlantic states.

Odds for below-average temperatures encompass much of the Southwest and California. Predicted troughing (jet stream shifted south of its normal position) during the first 2 weeks of the month (also consistent with MJO guidance) should result in a colder-than-normal first half of the month. However, the longer-range outlook has more uncertainty, so averaged over the month, forecasters give the outlook fairly low odds.

Precipitation outlook

Well above average precipitation is favored across large parts of the nation during March, in areas stretching from the West Coast eastward to the central Great Plains and from the Gulf Coast extending up the Eastern Seaboard to southern New England. Probabilities for a wet March are highest across central and northern California, across Nevada and Utah into Colorado, and in much of the Southeast (exceeding 50%). El Niño background conditions and the MJO both favor above-normal precipitation in these areas, as do current computer model forecasts for both the short (Week-1) and medium (Week-2) range. The week 3-4 precipitation outlook also favors above-average precipitation along the entire East Coast and in parts of the West.

Well below average precipitation is only favored in small parts of the Great Lakes region and in western and central Texas. However, the probability for dryness in both areas is less than 50% due to “mixed signals” for precipitation between the first and second halves of the month. For the first half of March, CPC’s 6-10-day and Week-2 outlooks tilt toward normal or even above-average precipitation across much of the country, including these regions. The first week of March appears quite dry in Texas, while the week 3-4 precipitation outlook tilts toward below-average in the western Great Lakes region.

Drought Monitor

Drought across the continuous United States decreased from about 23.5% at the end of January to close to 20% by the end of February, with around a 15% improvement in drought coverage during the winter overall. Additionally, the percent of the country in the two most intense categories (D3-D4, representing extreme and exceptional drought) decreased from around 2.5% to about 1.5% during February, with an overall improvement from 7.5% in early December. The current amount of extreme or exceptional drought is the lowest amount since June 2020.

NOAA Climate.gov map, based on data from the U.S. Drought Monitor Project. For more on drought, visit Drought.gov.

Precipitation during the winter was generally above average in the Pacific Northwest, in the Southwest, along the Gulf Coast, and in the mid-Atlantic, all resulting in drought improvement. The most significant drought improvement occurred in the lower Mississippi Valley, where improvements of up to 5 classes (and complete drought removal) was recorded. Drought removal was also observed in parts of the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic, with 3-4 class improvement common. Improvement of 2-3 classes and drought removal was also observed in the Pacific Northwest, while smaller improvement of 1-2 classes was recorded in the Southwest. In contrast, a drier-than-normal winter in the Northern Plains and around the Great Lakes resulted in drought degradation (up to 3 classes in the Plains).

Drought Outlook

Although much of the nation is favored to have a wetter-than-average March, the monthly drought outlook predicts drought to persist across many of the areas of the nation currently in drought. Drought improvement or removal is only predicted in the Central Plains and Tennessee Valley, but drought persistence and even development is forecast across parts of the Southwest and Texas, in the Northern Rockies and northern Great Plains, and around the Great Lakes, all regions not favored to experience a wet March.

U.S. map showing the drought forecast for March 2024

The drought outlook for March 2024 shows that more area is expected to see drought develop (yellow), persist, or worsen (brown) than is expected to see drought improve (tan) or end (green). NOAA Climate.gov map based on data from the Climate Prediction Center.

Improvement in the Central Plains and Tennessee Valley is consistent with forecasts for above-normal precipitation during all time scales relevant to the monthly outlook. In contrast, drought conditions extending from the Northern Rockies eastward to the Great Lakes are expected to persist with some drought development likely in Montana, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan as snowpack is well below normal and soils have prematurely thawed due to the well above normal temperatures observed during February. The outlook during March favors below-normal precipitation is some of this region and equal chances (no tilt in the odds towards any category) for the remainder. Drought persistence and development is also likely in the Southwest and parts of Texas, as outlooks favor either equal chances or below-normal precipitation. Periods of strong winds and above-average temperatures are also possible, keeping evapotranspiration rates high for this time of year and also keeping the potential for significant wild fires above average.
