Bendigo Fletcher
Shapeshifting on an axis between folk, alternative, country, and soul, Bendigo Fletcher’s lofty melodies soar above earthy instrumentation on their 2022 Wingding EP [Elektra Records]. Charmed with psychedelic flourishes, yet tightly rooted in tried-and-true songcraft, the Louisville quintet—Ryan Anderson [lead vocals, guitar, banjo], Andrew Shupert [backing vocals, lead guitar], Evan Wagner [backing vocals, keys, guitar, percussion], Conner Powell [bass], and Chris Weis [drums]—continues to instantly transfix across the EP’s four tracks.
“More than a few times, I’ve explored the Wingding font universe as an entertaining break from more pressing tasks. I like the name ‘Wingding’ for a fictional creature, like the Mothman of West Virginia folklore. It’s also another word for party,” Anderson says. “This EP is a collection of distractions we built over the last few years when gatherings and adventures felt pretty unattainable.”
After crisscrossing paths in the Louisville scene and life in general ( “ Chris is my brother-in-law ’ s childhood best friend , ” notes Anderson), Bendigo Fletcher initially formed in 2016. The group organically built an audience across their native Kentucky one gig at a time. During 2018, they made waves with the independent Consensual Wisdom EP highlighted by fan favorites “Wonderfully Bizarre” and “Soul Factory.”
Following a tireless grind, the band signed to Elektra Records and unveiled their debut album, Fits of Laughter in 2021. Beyond amassing millions of streams, the album earned widespread critical acclaim from Rolling Stone , American Songwriter , FLOOD Magazine , and more. Music Connection dubbed it, “ Alt-rock, country-flecked folk-rock soaked in LSD ,” while Atwood Magazine praised the collection as “ a record of reverie, celebration, and true to its name, laughter: music made for good times and bad, that promises to leave us all a little more elated . ” Along the way, Bendigo Fletcher captivated crowds on tour with the likes of Rainbow Kitten Surprise, Hiss Golden Messenger, Mt. Joy, Nathaniel Rateliff, Anderson East, Rayland Baxter, and Shakey Graves.
In 2022, Bendigo Fletcher returned to Nashville, TN’s Cartoon Moon Recording Studio to track their Wingding EP. Once again, the band teamed with Fits of Laughter producer and original Wilco/Uncle Tupelo drummer Ken Coomer in the studio. For the first time, the band enlisted Grizzly Bear bassist and producer, Chris Taylor, as a mixer.
“In addition to the brilliance of Ken’s ear as a song maker, I appreciate the environment he maintains,” notes Ryan. “All ideas are considered, and we try to just have fun trying new sounds. I think that mentality lends to a unique blend, keeping the band outside of any one box. And I’ve found constant inspiration in Chris’ work as a soundscaper since a friend introduced me to Veckatimest in high school. Having him on the project was really exciting, and I think his mixes present the band’s ethos in a beautifully natural way.”
The act of making the record opened a portal outside of the madness and mundanity of the last two years. Between holding down a job at a grocery store, Ryan picked up a pen and a guitar in his apartment and creatively departed this mortal coil.
“The songs were my way of coping with the idle uncertainty of the early pandemic months and escaping into a creative space to keep my spirit alive. They come from a more imaginative place where I feel a freedom to process and color some experiences in a productive light.”
The collection’s lead single “Pterodactyl” drifts into the arms of ethereal piano, woozy slide guitar, percussive handclaps, and wistful whistling. Meanwhile, Ryan ponders everything from budding love to “ the witching hour for the higher power” via strangely saccharine melodies.
“It gradually bloomed with different instruments and textures in the studio,” he recalls. “The song kind of unfolds like a long-game relationship. It begins vulnerably and intimately, and evolves into deeper layers of musical support and mystery.”
The opener “Stranger Encounters” hinges on a delicate stomp and twangy guitars as a close encounter of a different kind happens…
“During the COVID lockdown, I found myself watching more sci-fi— X Files, Twin Peaks, the Alien movies— for entertainment and comfort,” he says. “This one’s about just getting out there and living, tasting, touching, experiencing through my own senses. We’re all part of an ecology of diverse preferences and individual truths, and this song is a celebration of that.”
Then, there’s “Juniper Moore.” Wrapped in a blanket of luminous guitar and piano, a hypnotic refrain pierces the sky with “ a weird lasagna of feelings . ”
“I’ve imagined a far-fetched romance or two that works out beautifully in another universe,” he states. “This song helped me to play a bit in that loneliness. I think a lot about the fine line within technology’s capabilities to either remedy or exacerbate that loneliness.”
Meanwhile, the bright acoustic guitar and lithe vocal delivery of “Broken Routine” fall back to earth with “some glimpses at a relationship that has worked out well.”
“We hope to provide a few moments of musical distractions for anyone who needs them,” he leaves off. “The EP dances between confession and fabrication for what feels like a cleanse of imagination. It’s a relief to share a few more stories from that place.”

Tour Diaries: Bendigo Fletcher
Bendigo Fletcher had Columbus, Ohio completely enraptured with their folk-rock perfectly entwined with transcendent psychedelia.
Bendigo Fletcher is a beauty of a band, masterfully crafting stories and depicting what it is to be wonderfully human with folk-rock spectacularly infused with psychedelic twang. The five-piece consists of frontman Ryan Anderson (vocals), Conner Powell (bass), Andrew Shupert (lead guitar), Evan Wagner (keys, guitar, auxiliary percussion), and Chris Weis (drums), hailing from Louisville, Kentucky. Following the independent release of their music since 2017, Bendigo Fletcher signed with Elektra Records in early 2021 to release their album Fits of Laughter in August of that year. In October of 2022, Bendigo Fletcher's EP Wingding, released as the band's second project with Elektra, filled with soulful flourishes, imaginative fuel, and just a few "skellies in the attic."
Bendigo Fletcher sat down with us on their Columbus, Ohio stop on the tail-end of their Fall Tour to talk about their hell of a year, and what they have coming up in 2023.
You all had a busy year, you went on tour with Madison Cunningham, did some shows with The Backseat Lovers and Shakey Graves. What have you guys learned about yourselves this past year?
Andrew Shupert: Yeah, refining our performance, how we choose what songs we are going to play, group dynamics on the stage and off, refining our sound. Getting a lot of feedback and, just kind of evolving, I guess. Playing so many shows, trying to tune stuff up each night, make it a little bit better every time.
Ryan Anderson: Treating sound checks more methodically. Just like the little minutia things like that. When you start touring you're really excited. Like the early years, I guess some things are kind of easy to just blast through or move through with so much excitement after time, it's like oh we have to make some extra space for a list of things to check during a sound check and the way that every day works kind of as a working team together.
Evan Wagner: I think it was like rewarding that we proved to ourselves that we could go out for that long, without really any issue, it was really fun and really long.
RA: And getting to see those bands, like you said, Backseat Lovers, Madison, Shaky Graves, like the way that they operate and getting to just look at everything from their guitar pedal setups and just see how they prepare each night. It's like free education.
EW: Kind of peel the curtain back
Which do you like better kind of being on a larger tour or doing a bit of a smaller tour like you're on right now?
RA: I don't know. Yeah, I think both because going out there and looking, seeing that the room is nearly full for headlining gig is really special and something kind of new to us when we play out of town. But then like getting open for the Backseat Lovers to like 2500 people was quite a rush.
In October you had a lovely little EP come out. It is fantastic, genuinely incredible. What is your guys’ creative process when it comes to creating music and how it translate live?
RA: I think closer to story oriented when it comes to the songs. Our arrangements are pretty focused on and refined in the recording process. We try to replicate that live and sometimes it's fun to play it differently live. Like stripped back a little bit more like simple instrumentation rock and roll for sure.
Okay, last question - do you have any plans for 2023 that you would like to do or that are already in the works?
AS: We're going to go record in January in Memphis
EW: It's a new studio, that’s slightly bigger, so we can kind of spread out a little more than we're used to. So I'm excited about that.
AS: More touring
RA: We have Treefort Music Fest in Boise in March, so we're building tour around that mostly out west.
One important aspect that separates good performers from great ones, is their stage presence, and Bendigo Fletcher has got it. Summit Hall is a small but mighty local venue in Columbus, Ohio, and while jamming five guys on stage with all their equipment has the potential for cramping, even the audience; Bendigo Fletcher's presence masterfully made the stage and venue feel massive. An obvious mixture of command of the room, passion, and sheer talent kept all eyes glued to the stage for the entirety of the night. While perhaps not the same as playing for 2500 when opening for The Backseat Lovers, Bendigo Fletcher still clearly gave the same heart and effort for this smaller crowd in Columbus. The band sang through their recent EP, Wingding, in entirety, and the addition of "Wonderfully Bizarre" to close out their set genuinely had the people in the crowd shedding some tears - and if your music can make grown men cry, we're sold.
There was not a single soul who was not completely enraptured by Bendigo Fletcher' folk-rock perfectly entwined with transcendent psychedelia. Bendigo Fletcher's music aptly fills a unmistakable void in the current folk + folk-adjacent landscape. With the Americana-ish of all your favorites like The Lumineers and Caamp, plus the belting quality akin to Greta Van Fleet; Bendigo Fletcher is everything you didn't know you needed. Jangly beats and carefully crafted lyrics sometimes infused with off-beat humor are hallmarks of Bendigo Fletcher's wildly wonderful and beautifully human discography. If Bendigo Fletcher wasn't on your radar, they absolutely need to be now. Excuse us while we go start a countdown for their next release.

Louisville, KY's Bendigo Fletcher have unveiled a new single entitled “Sweet Tooth”. The track is available on all streaming platforms. Watch the song's accompanying visual below!
“Sweet Tooth” marks the second song Bendigo Fletcher have shared from their forthcoming sophomore album Two Things At Once, which is due for release on March 22, 2024 via Elektra. The album is available for pre-order/pre-save on all streaming platforms now HERE .
On “Sweet Tooth,” delicate acoustic guitar brushes up against pensive verses as lead vocalist/guitarist Ryan Anderson exhales, “I've had enough of all this.” Once the electric guitar and shimmering piano kick in, the momentum picks up on a falsetto-inflected refrain, “No sleep till the money.” Sporting “a sour sense of humor,” it takes aim at the systemic inequality between the haves and the have-nots.
Anderson shares, “That song comes from trying to not let the situation steal from us what makes us human — to scrape for compassion for the world and in our relationships, to make music, to cry together, to not let the fight for freedom take our joy. When life is sad, there is beauty in coming together and sharing perspective.”
Two Things At Once pulls together threads of folk, psychedelia, indie, alt-country, and rock into a charcuterie board of vibrant characters, vivid memories, and vital moments. It's a recipe for 11 intoxicating and irresistible anthems earmarked by American Songbook-worthy storytelling and elevated songcraft.
For the album, they notably reteamed with producer Ken Coomer [a founding member of Wilco and Uncle Tupelo], recording at Cartoon Moon Recording in Nashville and at Southern Grooves in Memphis joined by GRAMMY Award-winning engineer Matt Ross-Spang [Jason Isbell, John Prine, Margo Price].
Bendigo Fletcher ushered in Two Things At Once with the February release of lead single “ Upcountry Lemonade ”, which arrived to praise from Ones To Watch, Atwood Magazine, and more. Watch the track's accompanying visual HERE . Last weekend, Bendigo Fletcher personally previewed Two Things At Once for a group of 20 fans at a secluded hideaway in the woods outside of Louisville. This cohort of listeners joined the band for a hike to the house where they heard the album in its entirety and enjoyed an unforgettable stripped-down live performance.
In support of the album, Bendigo Fletcher will embark on a North American headline tour this spring. The 33-city trek kicks off on March 8 in Indianapolis, visits major markets coast-to-coast, and wraps on May 11 in Cincinnati. Get tickets HERE .

They also joined The Brook & The Bluff on a 7-week run which saw them perform to sold out crowds across North America. As a powerhouse live presence, the band has previously toured supporting Caamp, Mt. Joy, Rainbow Kitten Surprise, Shakey Graves, Madison Cunningham, and more.
Last fall, Bendigo Fletcher surprised fans with a cover of Cults' 2011 classic “Go Outside”. “Go Outside (From Natural Bridge State Resort Park)” is available to stream and download HERE via Elektra. Recorded live at Slade, KY's Natural Bridge State Resort Park, the release was accompanied by a stunning visual of the band performing the song in the picturesque location. Watch HERE .
Bendigo Fletcher encourages fans to support the Kentucky State Parks Foundation , a non-profit organization aimed at connecting residents and guests to the outdoors. The band also partnered with Kentucky Parks Club on a limited edition t-shirt, designed by frontman Ryan Anderson. The shirt is available now HERE .
"Go Outside (From Natural Bridge State Resort Park)" marked Bendigo Fletcher's first new music since the 2023 Fourth of July single ” Uncle Mick's Fireworks Extravaganza " and their 2022 Wingding EP . Praised for their blend of folk-rock and psychedelic twang, the band garnered acclaim from publications like MUD and Consequence. Their debut album, Fits Of Laughter , released in 2021, featured hits like " Sugar In The Creek " and " Evergreen ," earning accolades from FLOOD Magazine, Music Connection, American Songwriter, and Atwood Magazine for its unique blend of alt-rock and folk-Americana roots.
