Pearl Izumi Tour Road Shoe review

Lightweight lace ups

David Caudery / Immediate Media

Simon Withers

Low weight, good stiffness, comfort and venting

White may not stay white for long, and keep those laces safely tucked in

Pearl Izumi's Tour Road Shoe are compatible with two-bolt as well as three-bolt cleats – as are Bontrager’s Circuits and Northwave’s Core Plus – but unlike many other road cycling shoes they come with laces

  • Best cycling shoes 2020
  • Best road bike tyres

Why laces? Well, these may have been largely superseded by Velcro or Boa and ATOP dials, or a mix of the above, but laces offer all the adjustability you need to get a tight, secure fit and they help to keep weight down too.

The Tours come with a spare set of black laces and there’s an elasticated tab on the tongue to tuck them into. Don’t forget to use it – flapping laces and fast-moving chains are a poor combination.

The Tour’s sole is made from nylon with a large carbon-reinforced plate for the cleat – and it proved to be a very effective combination. This gives the required stiffness where you want it with a little bit of flex elsewhere, hence the ‘Tour’ moniker.

They score eight on Pearl Izumi’s 14-point stiffness scale and that feels about right (I really do wish manufacturers would standardise their stiffness scales…).

If you’re racing, these probably aren’t the shoe for you, but for sportives, centuries and fitness riding the little bit of ‘give’ they offer nicely balances efficiency and comfort.

Both the two- and three-bolt fittings have fore-and-aft adjustability and there’s a decent heel bumper too.

There’s plenty of venting on both the soles and the heavily perforated, stitch-free uppers, which are also soft and comfortable (and very white).

Pearl Izumi Tour Road Shoe

They turned up in the middle of the February 'heat-wave' and I was so struck by their looks, I had to get those cleats fitted and get out on a ride straight away. The white-with-red-laces thing actually appealed to me, but if you don't like to make a statement, Pearl Izumi thoughtfully include a second pair of laces in black. The shoe itself is also available in black, with the same lace choices.

I like the lace system. It's easy to get an even fit around the foot, far less crude than Velcro straps and there was less tendency to overtighten them, which I do every time with ratchets. The loops can tuck away under an elastic retainer.

Pearl Izumi M Tour Road WE 45 - toe.jpg

There doesn't seem to be anything technical or innovative about the great fit and comfort of these shoes – it's down to the simple, one-piece construction of the upper, which moulds itself around your instep to give your foot a lovely hug. These size 45s seem spot on for length on me. Volume is more generous than some, so I had no problems wearing winter merino socks, and when switching to thinner ones there was still plenty of adjustment available.

Unfortunately, after a few rides I noticed the right shoe developing a bit of a crease in the upper. Since this is quite thin I'm a little concerned this might result in a split, in time, perhaps through one of the perforations. If so, this would most certainly be covered by Pearl Izumi's straightforward warranty. Be sure to follow the care instructions to keep that valid. The uppers wipe clean with a damp cloth and come up surprisingly fresh, given that white is a nightmare to look after, darling.

Pearl Izumi M Tour Road WE 45 - side 2.jpg

The tongue is a separate piece, very lightly padded and, with the flat laces, that was plenty to ensure no pressure or pain on the instep. Around the ankle, just a few millimetres of foam make the shoes rub-free and secure.

Pearl Izumi M Tour Road WE 45 - side.jpg

The insole is a fairly basic foam piece – though it is well perforated for ventilation. It didn't give my fallen arches much assistance, but to be fair they weren't uncomfortable and there was no sign of hot-spots underfoot. I slipped in some orthotic soles I use, which have been heat-moulded, and got an even better fit without crowding my foot out of the shoe.

> Beginner's guide to cycling shoes – the secrets of comfy feet

Pearl Izumi has bonded the upper to a nylon composite sole (with a bonus carbon insert at the cleat area). It scores 8 on PI's scale of stiffness, which goes all the way up to 13. They seemed plenty stiff enough for me, just a tiny bit of spring to give a little shock absorption while every pedal stroke seemed to transfer directly into uphill progress.

Judging ventilation in a summer shoe is tricky in February or March, heatwave or not. I did manage a couple of rides without overshoes (it was even warm enough for shorts). The air inlets in the sole are simply holes with mesh, rather than scoops; the perforations in the upper are only half-replicated in the lining. I always have cold feet anyway so don't like them too ventilated. Overshoes slipped on over the Tours' smooth profile very easily and with no Velcro to snag on.

Price-wise, they're £10 more than the Lake CX 1 , a close competitor on performance but rather heavier at 769g for a pair of size 44s, but both are beaten on price and weight by dhb's Dorica Road shoes .

> Buyer's Guide: Cheap cycling shoes – 11 of the best

As I said at the start, the classic lace look and the name suggest a touring shoe, perhaps like the Quoc Pham Fixed pair Mike Stead reviewed , but if you fit a two-bolt mountain bike cleat it isn't recessed for easy strolling off the bike. Actually, walking in them wasn't too bad, thanks to the rubber heel bumpers, provided your cleats aren't worn to a shine. However, if PI produced these with a touring-friendly sole, I'd certainly give them a look too.

Shoes you can wear all day – if you're in any way lace-curious these will be a good place to start

road.cc test report

Make and model: Pearl Izumi Tour Road Shoe

Size tested: 45

Tell us what the product is for

"A modern interpretation of the classic lace up cycling shoe", says Pearl Izumi and describes the Tour Road thusly: "Combining the classic look of a lace up with modern sole technology, the Tour Road provides performance at a tremendous value. Our supportive nylon composite sole integrates a stiff carbon plate at the ball of the foot to maximize power transfer, with the flexibility to run either two bolt SPD or three bolt SPD-SL cleats. The fully bonded seamless upper construction creates a slipper like fit that is highly adjustable thanks to the traditional lacing system. An additional set of laces is included in the box so you can choose to add a pop of color or opt for subtle style."

...and as far as I'm concerned, I couldn't have put it more succinctly.

Tell us some more about the technical aspects of the product?

Pearl Izumi lists:

Seamless upper offers exceptional comfort and avoids hot spots by adapting to your unique foot shape

Traditional lace closure for a precise fit and all-day comfort

Lace lock provides a safe place to stash your laces to keep them free of your drivetrain

1:1® Composite Power Plate with carbon fiber forefoot insert provides lightweight stiffness and durability (stiffness rating 8)

Plate features Direct-Vent technology for cooling and drainage

3-bolt SPD-SL and 2-bolt SPD compatible

Weight: 270 grams / 9.5 oz.(size 43) (That's claimed, per shoe - ed.)

Tough as old boots. The very simple upper means there's only one sewn seam, at the back of the shoe, while the inner lining is just as tidily secured to the outer around the ankle. The upper is securely bonded to the sole. The simple construction means there's not too much to go wrong.

If comfort and performance can be separated out at all, I'd say these are more about the former than the latter but they weren't lacking, and for my level and style of riding (middling outings over big hills) I thought they were really good, with plenty of stiffness to transfer my limited bit of power into uphill motion.

The seasons have to be taken into account too - like most summer shoes I found them over-ventilated for UK use (though Peal Izumi says those vents in the sole are also for "drainage"!), even in the record-breaking February temperatures of 2019. However, they worked very well with an overshoe.

I noticed a slight crease appeared in one of the uppers after a few rides. At the moment it's a small cosmetic thing. I worry this might develop into a split in time but it's a bit early to say more than that. It'd be a warranty issue anyway.

Like saddles, shoe fit is a personal thing but for me these were excellent. I have a narrow foot.

I'm normally a 45; these were a very good fit with enough space for a thicker pair of socks.

Compared to other lace-up shoes we've reviewed, these compare favourably, saving almost 100g over the Rapha Classics and 80g on the Giro Republic LX R and a massive 200g on the Lake CX 1. The dhb Dorica shoe is a little lighter.

Once you have the laces adjusted to your satisfaction, there's little to do but put the shoes on and pull tight. The single-piece upper just gives your feet a good old hug and it stays that way all day. The insole is a bit basic and didn't offer much support to my fallen arches but they were comfortable enough; and there was enough room inside for an orthotic prescription sole I used with good results. I felt no pressure point, either above or below.

In the c£100 price category they're among the lightest shoes out there, laced or otherwise. However, the dhb Dorica Road Shoes beat them both for weight and price. You do get a fair amount for your money though: a composite carbon and nylon sole, the adaptability of fitting road or mountain bike cleats, good looks, two pairs of laces...

How easy is the product to care for? How did it respond to being washed?

The synthetic upper wipes clean and comes up better than I expected, though white is never easy to keep looking good.

Tell us how the product performed overall when used for its designed purpose

As you may have fathomed by now, these performed very well.

Tell us what you particularly liked about the product

Great fit and comfort.

Tell us what you particularly disliked about the product

Slight concern about the long-term durability of the uppers. Basic insole.

How does the price compare to that of similar products in the market, including ones recently tested on road.cc?

The Lake CX 1s are a close competitor in price (£110) and performance, though rather heavier. dhb's Doricas are £70.

Nice looking shoe but for something that is already creasing at the toe end already it doesn't bode well and frankly it's probably going to happen on any of the shoes, with all those 'vent' holes I'd be surprised if it doesn't eventually split after a winter.

I think the use of the word 'Tour' maybe points to the wordage of the Tour de France so is meant to be on the racier side, it's certainly no touring shoe given the stiffness of the sole and non recessed cleat and skinny insole. There's not many people these days that would a use a 2 bolt SPD system with what is in essence an outright road shoe with no recess, so I'm not sure in today's market why they've offered it up, how many extra people is it going to snare to make the cost viable to have both fittings in place?

I've got a pair of full carbon Shimano SH-R 150 road shoes with the double cleat option that go back near enough 15 years, I picked them up about 10yrs ago second hand for a silly amount. That was only so I could still use my single sided Magnesium road SPD pedals on my Raleigh titanium but since I bought some other Shimano MTB/touring type with a stiffish sole (more than my vibram Northwave shoes by far)and recessed cleat that are easy to walk in I haven't bothered with them in at least 5 years now.

it'll maybe appeal to a narrow group of people but it's neither fish nor fowl, the stiff sole and 'carbon' label are just confetti, the price compared to others will probably leave this on the shelf as an also ran.

To be fair to Pearl Izumi, they don't refer to it as a touring shoe at all, they just use the name Tour for the men's shoe, and call the women's the Sugar. On their site it's just listed as a "Road" shoe.

Seems odd that they are billed as a tour shoe yet dont have recessed / spd type cleats, how do they differ from a normal road shoe, especially given that they have a carbon composite sole and a stiffness of 8?

Odd indeed.

Go one size up

I have several Giro and Pearl Izumi shoes in 46, but after seeing the reviews here, I ordered these in 47. That's the way to go. I only have about 40 miles on these now. The initial impression is very positive, and I imagine the uppers will conform more over time, but you need to get the length correct from the start.

Just received these as a Christmas gift. I own Specialized shoes, size 44, which fit well. I also own a different pair of Pearl Izumi in size 45 that fit well. These, 46, fit well around the foot but are too short. I'll have to return them. Unfortunately, they are not offered in a 46.5 which I think would be perfect. Too bad as they seem like great road shoes otherwise. I "normally" wear size 11 in street shoes with typical foot width if it helps anyone in making a size choice.

Comfortable and Lightweight

I wear a Size49 and got these in white. The are used in conjunction with Speedplay Zero pedals and I use the F6 shims. The fit is good at 49; I do have narrower feet, but they still cinch up nicely without buckling. If there is any appreciable stretch, that may be something to be less happy about over time. After about 200km (3 rides), I can say they fit good and are comfortable. They are easy on and off thanks to some elasticity around the ankle area. The laces with the offset enclosure are really good and it makes me wonder why everyone is so sold on Boa. They seem plenty stiff on climbs or putting the power down and are still somewhat normal to walk in. nice trick! I won't speak too ill of the shoes they were replacing, but these are sooo much better than the Torch 2.0, especially with fit around the tongue area. Plus these are more affordable and in my size, these were 20g per shoe lighter. I don't normally care too much on weight, but figured I would go ahead and measure while I was switching over my cleats just to make the review more interesting. I'll try to remember to chime back in after 2000km. POST 2000km update - Still really great. They remain comfortable and plenty stiff. I'll stick with them for the coming Spring. Excited about that! Most of my road rides are 2 - 4 hours with pretty typical 1000ft of elevation gain every 10 miles. Great shoes for that kind of riding.

Great purchase

Received these shoes today and really like the quality and look. I wear a size 9 all day long and I ordered the 42 sizing for this shoe. Fits like a glove and I have slightly narrow feet with a good arch. No issues whatsoever. Lightweight and throwback lacing style. Can?t wait to put these on the pedals. Fast shipping from Back Country!

Pearl Izumi PRO Leader III shoe review

Peel back the insole of virtually every cycling shoe on the market and you’ll see a sad little tan layer of material that basically looks (and feels) almost like cardboard. It’s called a lasting board and it’s been a staple in shoe construction for ages.

But if you do the same with the Pearl Izumi PRO Leader III, all you’ll find is the carbon fibre sole plate that’s normally only visible from the outside.

With few exceptions – the entire Bont range and Specialized’s latest S-Works models, for example – uppers are basically formed by wrapping the material around a foot-shaped form called a last, wrapping the edges around a lasting board at the bottom, and then either stitching or gluing the edges in place. The last is what determines the upper’s shape while the lasting board not only creates a flat bottom on which your foot can rest, but also serves as a filler for the upper material edges. Once you glue that assembly on to a nylon or carbon fibre sole plate, you’ve basically got yourself a cycling shoe.

Lasted construction is prevalent because it works. But it also adds an extra layer of material in between your feet and your pedals. For the PRO Leader III, Pearl Izumi’s shoe designers figured out that you could instead use the carbon sole plate as the lasting board itself, and secure the edges with a layer of polyurethane for a nicely finished appearance – and 1.5mm less stack height, according to Pearl Izumi.

Other aspects of the PRO Leader III are similarly high-tech. The uppers themselves comprise a single sheet of airy mesh, reinforced with a polyurethane ‘web’ thermo-welded on top to create a decidedly space-age look that no one will ever mistake for a pair of Sidis. Out back, the T-shaped heel counter is bonded to the outside of the shoe instead of hidden away inside the upper.

While the PRO Leader III's novel construction method should theoretically make for a lower stack height, there was no noticeable difference between these and other, more conventionally built shoes.

As is becoming increasing popular, the whole thing is wrapped around your foot with a pair of Boa IP1 cable reels, offering incremental adjustments in either direction for easy on-the-bike tweaks as well as a quick-release function that makes it easy to get the shoes on or off (and as always, they can be quickly replaced if something goes wrong).

Even the insoles are worthy of mention. If you want more forefoot varus angle or arch height, for example, just slide the included plastic and rubber inserts into the designated pockets between the insoles’ two layers with no cumbersome heat moulding required.

Actual weight per pair is 532g (size 44) – not exactly feathery-light but competitive for the category.

On the road

Pearl Izumi describes its PRO Leader III is the “ultimate Pro Tour level shoe designed to disappear on your foot but still transfer every last watt of power to your pedals.”

Indeed, I found the PRO Leader III shoes to be very comfortable, particularly on longer rides where hot spots and pressure points often tend to creep into the equation.

The toe box is comparatively roomy, especially relative to many traditional European brands. The body is evenly snug through the midsection, and pressure is pleasantly distributed across the top of the foot even when both Boa reels are cranked down tighter than they should be. Arch support is good, too, with the contoured carbon fibre plates providing a more solid foundation than flatter ones, and the customisable insole filling in whatever else you might need.

The thick and dense padding on the tongue does a good job of alleviating any undue pressure from the Boa cables but the lacing system still tends to push down on your foot instead of pulling it back against the heel cup.

That comfort erodes a bit in warmer conditions, though. Overall breathability is pretty good, but it could be better, especially on the top of the foot beneath the heavily padded, non-perforated tongue. As compared to the preproduction preview Pearl Izumi showed at the Eurobike trade show in August, there’s noticeably more polyurethane webbing and less exposed open mesh on the production shoes, particularly around the external heel cup, which instead has a bit more structure. A fair bit of mesh remains — particularly along the outer edges — but don’t let the shoe’s outward appearances fool you; the areas where the mesh is actually open are still much smaller than outward appearances might suggest.

The carbon fibre sole plate is very rigid, in terms of bending, but less so in terms of torsion. There’s some twist underfoot if you tend to roll your feet from edge to edge, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing depending on your preferences, particularly for riders who like to log really long days in the saddle. Nevertheless, if you generally seek road shoes with a rock-solid feel underfoot, these aren’t the droids you’re looking for.

More troubling is the disappointingly sloppy feel around the heel. The extra polyurethane around the back of the shoe may very well have added some support in that critical area, but I felt that the top of the T-shaped heel counter didn’t pinch down around the top of the heel as much as it should. The cup itself is also quite roomy, so I experienced some noticeable slip. Unfortunately, cranking down the Boa dials only created more downward pressure on my feet; it didn’t at all tighten the shoe around my ankle for a more solid hold.

Overall, the Pearl Izumi PRO Leader III shoes are competitively light, stiff, and generally comfortable over the long haul. But, as always with cycling shoes, it’s all about the fit — and these could use a bit of work in that department before I would consider them on equal footing (pun intended) with top offerings from other brands. Of course fit is subjective; everyone’s feet are different. At the very least, make sure you’ve tried them on before purchasing.

Available sizes: 38-49 (half sizes from 39-47) Available colours: True Red/Lime Punch, Black/White RRP: US$320 / AU$469 / £250 / €380

The one-piece upper uses a layer of polyurethane that's thermo-welded on to a mesh base.

Pearl Izumi Cycling Shoes

' src=

Pearl Izumi makes some of our favorite cycling gear, from bike shorts to jerseys, so we trust their quality.  Let’s take a look at Pearl Izumi’s cycling-specific shoes, including the best from their roster of high-end road shoes, mid-range road shoes, mountain bike shoes, and gravel shoes.

High-End Pearl Izumi Road Shoes

Pearl Izumi offers two models of high-end road shoes with a men’s specific fit and one high-end road shoe with a women’s specific fit. But really, there is no reason why women can’t wear a men’s shoe and vice versa.

A high-end road shoe is designed to be stiff and lightweight, so you can apply max power to the pedals without being weighed down by a heavy shoe.  They fit the theme of high end road bikes — trying to shave off weight wherever you can. You’ll find most high-end road shoes are available in 3 bolt cleat configurations, and Pearl Izumi shoes are no different, especially the Pro Road V5.

Pro Road V5

Pearl Izumi Cycling Shoes

After two years of hard work, the Pro Road V5 has been redesigned with an even lighter-weight upper shoe and a stiffer carbon sole, saving you a whopping 22% in shoe weight. In addition, the upper shoe is a knit design, which further increases this shoe’s flexibility and ventilation where you need it the most.

The Dual Boa fit system lets you adjust your shoes on the fly, with easy micro-adjustments and quick removal if needed. These shoes run small and fit slim, so you may need to order a half size up for comfort. Also, it is worth noting that these shoes are only available in the classic three-bolt road shoe system, so unless you have an adapter, you won’t be using these with your SPD cleats. The Pro Road V5 is available in both men’s and women’s specific fits.

A steep price tag offers plenty of benefits that you would expect to see from such a high-end shoe. However, if $400 is too much for your budget, you won’t lose much ground by stepping down to a mid-range shoe.

Mid-Range Pearl Izumi Road Shoes

A mid-range road option will still give you a hearty cycling shoe with plenty of benefits. You’ll lose a little bit of weight savings, maybe a boa or two, and you likely won’t have any full carbon soles in this price category. However, with four men’s and four women’s models to choose from, there are plenty of popular options, from laces to boas and nylon soles with carbon plates. So you’ll still have a sleek, fast shoe without the hefty price tag.

Attack Road

A carbon insert assists power transfer without the hefty cost of a full carbon sole, too. And the best part of these is they come in both women’s and men’s specific fits and include both two-bolt and three-bolt cleat fits.

Keep in mind, though, you may want to install walking adapters with your cleats to protect the sole of your road shoes in the event you need to do a little bit of walking.

Pearl Izumi Mountain Bike Shoes

The X-Alp Summit

The Summit is clearly a favorite mountain bike shoe in the Pearl Izumi lineup. This shoe offers a combination Boa Fit System with Velcro straps to give you the most comfortable, adaptable fit. The sole is a nylon composite to provide you with a balance of pedaling performance and ease of walking, with a rubber outer sole that offers lots and lots of much-needed grip. Finally, don’t forget the ventilation system, which helps the shoe dry more quickly, and a reinforced toe box to protect your feet.

The X-Alp Summit is two bolt/SPD compatible, which is the industry standard for mountain biking and gravel riding.

Pearl Izumi Gravel Cycling Shoes

Last but far from least is the gravel category in Pearl Izumi.  Gravel biking has become really popular as of late, and cyclists are finding that slightly modified gear is ideal. A gravel shoe gives you the best of both worlds, and if you can only pick one pair, this would be the category to choose from. Gravel shoes are lightweight and stiff like road shoes, but still have a bit of grip to navigate tricky hike-a-bike sections. They may offer less foot protection than mountain bike shoes but still have plenty of breathability for those sweaty hill climbs. Naturally, they are created to work with SPD/2 bolt cleat systems.

recessed cleat bike shoe

When gravel riding, it is pretty easy to find yourself on a singletrack trail or Jeep road, and in those cases you are much better off with a nimble shoe that more resembles a mountain bike shoe than you are with a road cycling shoe that is hard to quickly unclip from.

Pearl Izumi offers two specifically gravel shoes alongside a variety of all-road and flat shoes. However, one specific shoe stands out above the others, the X-Alp Gravel Shoe.

X-Alp Gravel

pearl izumi tour road cycling shoes review

The X-Alp Gravel is genuinely the best of both mountain and gravel worlds, offering an impressive balance between walking comfort and pedaling stiffness. With a vibration-damping heel and some extra toe protection, this option provides both comfort and speed for both on and off-road adventures. In addition, you’ll get plenty of breathability and a comfortable fit with a single Boa closure.

We love seeing manufacturers make gravel-specific shoes. They typically are a bit more durable and road shoes and are built in a way that can dampen some of the vibration you get on gravel.

Pearl Izumi Bike Shoe FAQs

How does the shoe sizing run.

In our experience, Pearl Izumi bike shoes run small. We always order a half size up if in doubt.

I see the BOA button on some Pearl Izumi Shoes.  What is it?

The BOA strap system is found on many higher-end cycling shoes, especially in the road and gravel categories.  It allows you to do a very quick tighten of your shoe without having to mess with any laces.  It also allows for a few quick release when you want to remove the shoe.

Which each “click” the shoe becomes a little tighter, so you are able to get just the right tension on your foot.  We see this system on many of our favorite bike shoes.  We have personally used the system for years and love it.  You are going to find it on the X-Alp, Attack, and Pro-Road PI models, among others.

Pearl Izumi Select Road III cycling shoes

Syntehtic leather upper is easy to clean

Composite sole could be stiffer

With ‘1:1 Anatomic closing’ and a ‘Select 1:1 Power plate’, the Pearl Izumi Select Road IIIs are certainly laden with plenty of marketing spiel to raise both eyebrows and expectations. But thankfully my high expectations were met out on the road as these shoes offered both performance and comfort.

>>> Cycling shoes: a buyer's guide

On my first ride, I over-tightened the three Velcro straps and suffered discomfort. Having learned my lesson, I found the Pearl Izumi Select Road IIIs nice and comfortable. Having three straps allows for greater adjustment to accommodate different foot shapes, while also keeping a secure fit for when you really want to open the throttle.

The secure fit is complemented by the decent nylon composite sole. Of course, this doesn’t offer as much stiffness as the carbon soles on the similarly priced dhb R2.0Cs or the Bont Riots , but power transfer is still efficient thanks to the low stack height, and the little bit of flex aids comfort.

These are also extremely practical shoes; the synthetic leather upper is easy to clean, the logos on the heels are reflective for after-dark riding, and the sole is SPD-compatible.

  2. Review: Pearl Izumi Tour Road Shoe

    3. Good looking and very comfortable, the Pearl Izumi Tour Road shoes are also stiff and light. The classic lace look and the 'Tour' bit of the name might suggest a touring shoe, but the non-recessed cleat plate (which will take a three or two-bolt cleat) doesn't really allow for easy walking. Pros: Comfortable, affordable, light for lace-ups.
