Real City Tours: The #1 Free Walking Tour

medellin real city tours

“Hey man, have you gone on the walking tour yet?”

I’d been asked this question frequently since arriving in Medellín a few weeks ago. All three of my roommates had been fervently recommending the tour to my wife and I, almost from the moment we got here.

And so I used the city’s metro for the first time in order join one of the free walking tours in El Centro by Real City Tours .

I exited the metro and scanned the crowds of people for the trademark red shirt, clipboard and white hat I’d been told to expect. After a moment, I spotted the tour guide sitting nearby and went over to sign up.

Pablo is an enthusiastic man in his late twenties. He’d lived in Europe for almost a decade before returning to his native Colombia.

He directs half of the people who’ve shown up to go with him and the rest to go with his associate, a woman with the same clipboard and hat combo.

Known as a Panama hat in the U.S., this signature piece of headgear is a traditional Paisa fashion.

He tells our group of fifteen or so his name is Pablo. After walking with us down some stairs to an area with a giant black and gold painted 19th-century steam engine, he begins to tell us the early history of Medellín using the railroad track as a timeline.

Instead of writing a simple synopsis, my aim here is to describe how the tour made me feel, how brilliantly it blended pre-written material with unscripted interactions, and how I felt any question I asked was met with a thoughtful response more nuanced and less speculative than the answers I’m accustomed to receiving from tour guides.

Pablo is passionate about his home and its history, however complicated, from the migration of European people that kickstarted the age of conquest to the “criminal with my name” as our tour guide called him, that cast such a pall over the late 20th century.

I appreciated the way the stories of the past are gracefully weaved into the realities of the present. Nothing happens in a vacuum.

The Colombian government chose some of the most violent and poverty-stricken places in the city to stage its comeback, so often the same building will show this twin history. A den of prostitution and hopelessness becomes a civic building while the drug dealer’s plaza is transformed into the main public square.

This transformation is at the heart of the new Medellín, and Pablo shows us the city he loves, warts and all, in order to illustrate that change.

Melcocha

As we walked, I had my first Colombian michelada from a street vendor. It’s a refreshing drink, combining the juice from a lime with a Colombian beer (usually Pilsen), served in a cup with a salted rim.

It was better than the Melcocha, a taffy-like candy that is probably the most sugary sweet substance on earth.

A highlight for me was getting to see Botero Plaza .

Of course, I’d read about it before and seen pictures, but standing before the giant black sculptures was as beatific and transcendent as being inside one of Medellín’s many gold leaf ensconced cathedrals.

The sculptures are large, yet inviting. Friendly, yet heroic. The enormous figures don’t dwarf the viewer, but rather remind them of the bigness, the largesse, inside of themselves.

The smiles on the human figures are as inscrutable as the Mona Lisa. The giant black cat is a riddle; a sphinx hiding an ineffable secret.

The tour has a good mix of famous spots and off the beaten track moments.

After Botero Plaza there’s the colorful textile district, street food vendors, long alleyways full of folks selling sunglasses and pirated DVDs, and this incredible relief sculpture, hard for me to even describe, that arcs towards the heavens with the story of Colombia in bronze and concrete.

I appreciated how Pablo would draw our attention to things happening around us, little snippets of day to day life that let us into aspects of Colombian culture.

The tour becomes whatever’s happening that day, like when we turned a corner into a crowded square where people were gambling on what was for me a most unusual game.

A guy was laying multicolored little bowls numbered 1 to 10 on the ground in a circle around an unnumbered yellow bowl. The crowd placed their bets on the numbered containers; the anticipation in the air was electric. Something was about to happen.

In an instant, the middle bowl was flipped to show a guinea pig, who after a moment of trepidation, sprinted to hide under the bowl marked with an 8. There was a celebration as people claimed their winnings.

What is under...

As we continued on there were more vendors selling pendants, belts, jewels, posters, even violins, antiques, various bric-à-brac and fruit.

A boy and his father were singing songs for a small audience that seemed to know every word. We walked further through the noisy streets, stopping for a quick empanada or to grab a beer for the walk.

The last moments of the tour were spent with two Botero sculptures that both illustrate and make real the terrible violence that gripped the city, as well as the dizzying hope for a better tomorrow, for a more peaceful future, that is already being born.

Our very presence as tourists was proof enough of a monumental change. We were evidence of the shift. After the tour was over Pablo led us back to the metro. The sun was setting in the city, yet the new day had already arrived.

The tour must be booked in advance through the Real City Tours website, where you can also find the days, times and meeting points.

The tour is free, but after the three plus hour extravaganza, you would probably feel like a cheapskate for not leaving a donation. The donations are anonymous. You may also want to wear sunscreen or a hat.

One of the BEST things we did on our second trip to Medellin was to take the Free Walking Tour from Real City Tours.

There is no better way to learn about a big city than directly from a local, and this was true for our insightful and wortwhile experience walking on this tour with our group and guide.

Is the Medellin Free Walking Tour something you should book for your trip or getaway in Medellin, Colombia? Read on, and hopefully you’ll be inspired to put it on your list!

A group of birds flying in front of a clock tower.

What is the Medellin Free Walking Tour?

The Medellin Free Walking Tour is the best way to see and experience Medellin, especially at the start of your trip. I think I just keep wishing we did it on our first trip to Medellin, rather than our second!

This walking tour is much like others, if you’ve done walking tours around the world. You probably know that if you take a free tour, it is expected to tip the guide at the end. At the bottom of this review, I comment on how to tip your guide (in cash).

The Medellin Free Walking Tour will hit all the most famous sights in Medellin’s downtown Centro area, and your local guide will tell stories, give you historical facts and answer questions. Truthfully, I never could’ve figured out Medellin’s Centro and how to see everything, and I speak advanced Spanish! The walking tour was awesome for packing in all those landmarks and more.

It’s no wonder that this walking tour has thousands of 5-star reviews on TripAdivsor !

How to sign up for a Medellin walking tour

Sign-ups start approximately 36 hours in advance before tour times. We were serious about this, and knew that we wanted to do an early Saturday tour. You can do your sign-up at the Real City Tours booking page .

Sign-ups start at 6:15pm for the tours that happen two calendar days later, so on Thursday night, we could sign up for any Saturday tour. Spots are first-come first-serve, and that’s to keep the groups intimate. It’s also safer for everyone to be in a small group, going through crowded areas of downtown Medellin Centro.

During high travel season, spots can fill up rather quickly. If you’re interested in taking the walking tour, sign up early! If you cannot attend, make sure to cancel your reservation to help out someone else if the tour is all booked.

Who are the Free Walking Tour guides?

Free Walking Tour guides are talented Colombian locals who are fluent in English, and of course, native in Spanish. They are helpful, passionate, well-spoken and all-around awesome. They want to help you understand the city of Medellin as well as the country of Colombia and they are typically able to answer any question you have.

Our guide Maribell was a phenomenal guide. Her theatrical background helped her explain the history of Medellin in a captivating way. She called the main players ‘actors’ and used clear hand motions to describe the timelines of the conflict, the war and the developments afterward. She answered all our questions about the Colombian identity, Medellin and its people, Medellin today and where to go for the best food or soccer matches.

A woman wearing a hat is talking on a cell phone.

How to stay safe during the walking tour

If you are staying in El Poblado or Laureles and haven’t been to Medellin’s “Centro” yet, the difference in these areas will be quite obvious. Even though you will be with a guide, keep in mind that as a foreigner, you might stand out, as a tourist with a nice camera or phone.

In order to avoid theft or scams, read our Medellin safety guide before your day out. (Don’t be alarmed, though! The threat of crime is quite low, especially when touring the sights with a guide.)

What to expect during the Free Walking Tour (where does it go?)

The Medellin Free Walking Tour took us through Medellin Centro. Here are a few of the memorable stops and what we learned.

Visit the Old Railway Station & Parque de las Luces

Our first stop was the Old railway station, and we learned that trains used to play a part in the Colombian economy. From there, we passed the Alpujarra administrative center, where we sat down for a history discussion, and then we crossed a major road to see the Park of Lights (Parque de las Luces).

This is a fascinating area that used to be a large city market. After a fire, the square fell into disarray and had some bad times. The city revamped it and created the tall installations that light up at night, giving the park its new name.

A group of pigeons on a sidewalk.

A stop in Botero Square

Botero Square is another memorable place, and it was here that we had a snack break and got to enjoy the wacky Botero sculptures! They’re popular with locals, too.

Fernando Botero is perhaps the most famous ‘paisa’ (name given to those who come from the Medellin region) artist, and his art is rather prevalent all over Colombia. His signature style reflects “unnatural proportions,” so his sculptures are humans and animals, and are worth seeing in this public collection of his works.

A group of people walking through a plaza with statues of horses.

Berrio Park

In Berrio Park, we saw local Medellin life and Maribell brought us to a circle of men who were playing guitar and singing. They played some tunes for us and we felt very welcomed.

A man holding a guitar.

See local Medellin street vendors

As we walked past the shopping arcades, we marveled at street vendors selling our favorite fruits: pitahayas (yellow dragon fruit), pineapples, papayas, bananas, small oranges and mangoes.

Parque San Antonio

The tour ended at San Antonio Park, where we listened to the striking story of the 1995 bomb that was placed under a Botero sculpture of a bird during a concert. The terrorist bombing resulted in the deaths of 20 innocent people.

Instead of removing the bird sculpture that was half blown apart by the explosion, the city kept the original and placed a new sculpture next to it. Together, they are a reminder of the past and hope for a peaceful future. This was an emotional story to hear from Maribell, and she told it very well.

Tipping the Free Walking Tour guide (“propina”)

At the end of the Real City Walking Tour, it is customary to tip the guide. All the guides are truly excellent, so it was a pleasure for us to tip our guide for her hard work. Recommended tips are between 20,000 and 40,000 pesos (between $5-10 USD).

While it may sound daunting to set aside 3-4 hours of your sightseeing time in Medellin, the Real City Walking Tour is both an efficient and meaningful way to spend your trip. We learned so much about Colombia and the city of Medellin through our guide and through seeing parts of Medellin we would not have visited on our own.

Tips for taking the Medellin Free Walking Tour

  • You’ll be walking for a long time, so make sure to wear comfortable shoes. See what I recommend in my travel shoes guide .
  • Look at the weather forecast before you leave. Although Medellin’s weather can be very unpredictable at times, you might want to bring a travel-sized umbrella or a rain coat.
  • Drink lots of water, especially if you take the tour during the summer, because it can be hot and humid. Don’t worry, though: you’ll have plenty of opportunities for bathroom breaks if needed.
  • There are opportunities for snacks, but if you’re not feeling adventurous to eat street food, bring snacks of your own.

Real City Tours: FREE Walking Tour in Medellin, Colombia

medellin real city tours

Sharing is caring!

When my tour guide Carolina (Real City Tours) asked for all those who’ve taken a free walking tour in the past to raise their hand, I did. I was going to mention that I’ve done a walking tour before, but it wasn’t free. Little did I know her emphasis was on the FREE part versus the walking tour part. The point that she was getting to was the difference between paid and free tours. With paid tours, it’s a set price whether or not you like the tour and whether or not the guide was good. With free tours, you pay what you want and not only will the guide most likely be amazing, but they’ll go out of their way to be great because their “tips” depend on how pleased you were. I didn’t think of any of this when booking my Free Walking Tour of Medellin, Colombia with Real City Tours.

Let me first say that I can’t give you the entire spiel because then you’d have no reason to take it. Just like any other tour I’ve done, whether they be food tours or another , you should take the tour to find out every stop along the way. What I can say is that I’m not surprised that Real City Tours is the #1 walking tour company in Medellin, Colombia.

medellin real city tours

We met up in downtown Medellin – well eventually since my map got me a little lost – and headed out in a group of no more than 20 to explore the area. Over the course of 4 hours we walked around downtown learning the history of Medellin, which seemed to span hundreds of years. In no way was it a boring history lesson (I love history), but we needed to know how Medellin developed a booming economy without the help of Voldemort, aka Pablo Escobar, and his drug money.

medellin real city tours

Real City Tours gets my stamp of approval because not only are the guides knowledgeable about the city, but they don’t hide or sugarcoat the juicy facts you want to know. Some guides simply want to sell you on their city and let you know just how amazing it is, but I didn’t get the cookie cutter version during my 4 hour walk with Carolina. Having such an open and honest guide made following her around for 4 hours even more bearable. I even loved that she kept encouraging us to ask questions when we really just wanted to hear her speak.

medellin real city tours

The best part about this particular tour was that we went to the “not so glamorous” parts of downtown Medellin. Seeing hardcore pornography DVDs being sold next to a historical church just wasn’t on my itinerary that day, but it managed to fit in. I wasn’t taken aback being in parts of the city where nobody sane should be caught after the sun goes down, but I love that she took it there. She took US there. And after being in that same exact area the day before and swearing off a second visit, I’m so glad I booked with Real City Tours. Downtown Medellin is my new go to place, even if it’s only for the best empanadas I’ve ever had.

medellin real city tours

Real City Tours has other tours that I’ve heard are great. Several people even mentioned booking more than one with them. I met a woman who said she’d taken the same tour earlier in the day and it was different, which is something you can expect with different guides. The night before I’d met a woman who said she cried (the good kind of tears) during her tour because it was just that great.

medellin real city tours

To be honest, I’m not trying to sell you on this tour because I don’t need to. Their testimonies speak for themselves but I will say that the Free Walking Tour with Real City Tours should be the first thing on your itinerary when visiting Medellin, Colombia and I know you’ll enjoy it just as much as I did. If you don’t, well then you lost nothing but 4 hours of your time and it was FREE.

Best things to do and see in Medellín

Medellin is one of those places you just have to visit if you go to Colombia. It is the c apital of the Antioquian Province and it is known as the city of “eternal Spring” due to the climate it enjoys. This South American city also has a large exposition of local artist Fernando Botero, both in the city, Botero Square, as in it’s museums, like the Museum of Antioquia. In addition to this artistic character, the gondolas (Metrocables) connect the outlying neighborhoods as a fast and efficient form of transport for this mountainous city connecting with viewpoints that offer some of the best views of the Valley of Aburra. In this amazing place, there is definitely a long list of mandatory stops for you to visit on your vacation.

You’ll find a great deal on all the free tours in Medellin where you can get to see all the best parts of the city in about 3 hours, and some tours will even focus on specific neighborhoods or districts if you want to check out an area a little more with your guru. Take a walk over to Arví Park, or Explora Park (which is a science museum with a large aquarium), through the Parque de los Pies Descalzos (barefoot park) or through the Berrio Park with the Church of La Candelaria, travel in the Medellín Metro (the only one in Colombia) , go to Pueblito Paisa, or choose to visit Comuna 13 (neighborhood where Pablo Escobar lived, since some of our tour guides offer specific tours of the Narcos series), let yourself be impressed at the Mirador de las Palmas (Palm tree Viewpoint) or visit the Terrace of the Palace of Culture.
