20 Things to Do on Kent Island, Queen Anne’s County, MD

We may earn money or products from the companies mentioned in this post.

If you’re visiting the Eastern Shore in Maryland, don’t bypass Queen Anne’s County in search of the beach! Instead, stop and visit for a spell. Queen Anne’s County is a short distance from the nation’s capital and Baltimore. Kent Island is the spot to hit for those who want a special outing!

Here are some fabulous things to do on Kent Island, Queen Anne’s County:

Best Things to Do on Kent Island in Queen Anne’s County, MD

20 Things to Do on Kent Island, Queen Anne's County, MD | The Common Traveler | image: aerial view of Chesapeake Bay Bridge

1. Admire the Chesapeake Bay Bridge

Spanning from Sandy Point State Park in Annapolis and ending in Stevensville on Kent Island stands the beautiful Chesapeake Bay Bridge. The bridge is actually two bridges, one built in 1952 and the second in 1973. Each bridge is over four miles long, with a lengthy suspension section in the middle. At its highest point, the bridge ranges between 354 and 379 feet tall, allowing many large vessels to utilize the shipping lanes in and out of Annapolis.

The bridge is best admired from one of the adjacent pieces of land or, even better, from the water itself!

2. Visit a unique lighthouse.

One of the most beautiful lighthouses in the United States (I may be biased) is the Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse . Built in 1875, the lighthouse is one of only twelve Maritime National Historic Landmarks. While the lighthouse still operates as a navigation tool, keepers left in 1986.

The lighthouse can be visited most Saturdays from June through mid-October, with tours departing from the dock behind the Annapolis Maritime Museum.

3. Enjoy a cruise along the Chesapeake Bay.

One of the best ways to experience the best the area offers is to book a cruise. Captain Jason on The Marylander of Maryland Fishing and Hunting can take guests to the best fishing spots, but if, like me, you’re not a fisherman, Captain Jason will show you some amazing sights.

Conditions permitting, you can approach the Chesapeake Bay Bridge, the Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse, and Annapolis. If you’re looking for amazing photos, book your tour around sunset!

4. Relax at Libbey’s Coastal Kitchen & Cocktails.

Located at the foot of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge, guests at Libbey’s Coastal Kitchen & Cocktails enjoy one of the best views of the Bridge. Relax in one of the wooden chairs. Show off your cornhole skills. Gather around one of the fire pits on cooler evenings while enjoying a cocktail with your friends. It’s a great all-around place to spend some time, whether eating or drinking.

5. Enjoy a sunset dinner.

Kent Island is home to a bevy of dockside and waterside restaurants. One of the best from which to enjoy the sunset is The Narrows Restaurant . It’s one of the area’s best places to enjoy crab cakes. Time your reservation to capture the sunset as you watch local boats return to the harbor for the night. Ask for a seat on the patio or near the windows for the best views.

6. Sip on a glass of wine at Love Point Vineyards and Winery.

Kent Island’s location along the Eastern Shore creates this perfect little area where wine grapes can be cultivated. Bring a book if you’d like to relax with a glass of wine along the shore. Owned by a couple who retired on Kent Island, Love Point Vineyards and Winery offers a selection of white and red wines. Pull up a chair and a glass!

20 Things to Do on Kent Island, Queen Anne's County, MD | The Common Traveler | image: box of blue crabs

7. Enjoy authentic blue crabs.

A truly authentic Maryland menu offering is the Maryland blue crab. The strange thing, to me, was that you eat it whole, with shell and all! Crabs are captured during their molting phase when their shells are soft. Restaurants prepare them by removing the non-edible parts (you don’t want to know) before frying them and serving them to customers.

8. Sip an Orange Crush.

For me, those words brought forth images of orange soda I drank as a kid (am I aging myself?). But an Orange Crush is a drink served all along the Eastern Shore. So what’s in it? The original recipe calls for the juice of a freshly squeezed orange, vodka, Grand Marnier (or an orange liqueur), lemon-lime soda (7-Up, Sprite, etc.), garnished with a slice of orange and a sprig of mint.

To make it, fill a glass with crushed ice, mix the juice and alcohol, then top with the soda before garnishing it. Of course, these days, many businesses offer more than the traditional orange flavor, so experiment with pink lemonade and other varieties of crushes!

20 Things to Do on Kent Island, Queen Anne's County, MD | The Common Traveler | image: The Jetty

9. Join the party at The Jetty.

If you’re looking for a dockside bar with live music on the weekends and where frozen drinks (and beer) flow freely, head over to The Jetty Restaurant and Dock Bar . Check out their event calendar to see what might be playing during your visit. Guests rave about the lively atmosphere, the avocado and shrimp ceviche, and rockfish tenders. It’s the perfect place to try one of the famous crushes, too!

20 Things to Do on Kent Island, Queen Anne's County, MD | The Common Traveler | image: Dessert First

10. Eat breakfast at Dessert First.

Any business that espouses eating dessert first has my vote, so I knew I’d love Dessert First Dockside Coffee before I even visited! Don’t let the name fool you, this place serves amazing coffee drinks using Rise Up Coffee, a Maryland favorite. During the summer, their coffee bar serves an amazing assortment of cold brew coffees.

Visit Dessert First for breakfast. Their rotating seasonal menu changes daily, but expect to find fresh fruit, breakfast sandwiches, and even quiches. Sit outside with your treats while enjoying dockside views. The best part is picking up a dessert to enjoy later! The lemon bar was calling my name.

11. Learn about the oyster trade.

The Harris Crab House and Harris Seafood Company are located next to Dessert First. Head over to the Seafood Company side, where you can learn about Chesapeake Bay oysters from the display. You’ll get an up-close look at the crab pots used by the company, too.

20 Things to Do on Kent Island, Queen Anne's County, MD | The Common Traveler | image: Sugar Doodles

12. Get a second boost of energy at Sugar Doodles!

You’ll want a second burst of energy before watching the sunset or partying the night away. The best spot to get it is at Sugar Doodles Sweet Shop , where you can order a made-to-order coffee, and why not treat yourself to an extreme shake while you’re at it?

Discovering local boutique shops is a pastime of mine! And Kent Narrows is home to several outstanding options. Looking for cute nautical decor or even ship parts? Visit Anchors & Oars . Beach lovers will find something delightful for their home or themselves (Ooops! I mean their friends) at Ophiuroidea , affectionately known as “The O.” If you’re looking for unique and trendy women’s clothing at an affordable price, check out Hope Boutique .

No matter which store you visit, you’ll bring home a fabulous gift or treat for yourself.

20 Things to Do on Kent Island, Queen Anne's County, MD | The Common Traveler | image: crab cakes

14. Eat all the crab cakes!

Visitors to Maryland absolutely have to try crab cakes on every occasion. A traditional Maryland crab cake includes only crab meat, mayonnaise, mustard, lemon juice, Worcestershire sauce, and, of course, Old Bay seasoning. Unlike other crab cakes containing fillers such as onions, peppers, parsley, or other additives, Maryland crab cakes are heavy on crab meat!

Some of the best places to try crab cakes on Kent Island are The Narrows Restaurant, Bridges Restaurant, Fisherman’s Inn, and The Jetty Restaurant and Dock Bar. Locals rave about the Stevensville Crab Shack , where their special features a crab cake and ½ lb of shrimp.

15. Spend a quiet night at the Holiday Inn Express.

If you’re looking for an affordable spot to spend the night, you can’t go wrong with booking a room at the Holiday Inn Express-Annapolis East/Kent Island. The hotel is located on the back bay, meaning that guests are away from the busier areas of Kent Island.

The hotel has a pool for those wanting to cool off after a hot day exploring the area. It is conveniently located near the boardwalk, so you can ride one of the rental bikes just down the street if you want to discover nearby areas.

20 Things to Do on Kent Island, Queen Anne's County, MD | The Common Traveler | image: bike rentals

16. Ride a bike along the Cross Island Trail.

The six-mile-long Cross Island Trail crosses the width of Kent Island. While you can walk or run it, one of the best ways to explore it is by renting a bike. You’ll find a bike rental station near the Holiday Inn Express. Much of the terrain is flat, making this an accessible ride for most visitors.

17. Drink a tall, cool craft beer at a unique brewery.

Entertainment, craft brews, a delicious menu, indoor and outdoor space – what more could you want in a brewery? Nothing! Cult Classic Brewing offers all of these and more.

20 Things to Do on Kent Island, Queen Anne's County, MD | The Common Traveler | image: crab baskets

18. Admire the crab basket Christmas Tree.

Queen Anne’s Fisherman Association lights their ceremonial crab basket tree in early December. There has been so much interest in the crab basket Christmas Tree that it grows every year, from the original one tree to three trees in 2023! The trees will be located in the Fisherman’s Village Complex next to the Kent Narrows Bridge.

20 Things to Do on Kent Island, Queen Anne's County, MD | The Common Traveler | image: docked boats

19. Watch boats come in and out at the harbor.

If you’re traveling to the area with your boat, then Safe Harbor Narrows Point is the perfect destination to moor. But you don’t have to own a boat to enjoy it! Just sit and watch the different boats leaving in the morning or returning at the end of the day.

20. Ride a hot air balloon.

What better way to view an area than from above? For those unafraid of heights, Delmarva Balloon Rides is a fantastic way to explore the Eastern Shore. Riders with Delmarva get to be part of the crew, helping to inflate the balloon and packing it away at the end of the ride.

Final Thoughts on Things to Do on Kent Island, Queen Anne’s County, MD

My stay on Kent Island was way too short! While many sights can be enjoyed over a weekend, spending even more days would be better. Don’t rush to the beach without seeing Kent Island’s attractions and offerings.

A Glimpse Into Kent Island's Past

Kent Island holds the distinction of being the third-oldest English settlement in America, even before the Pilgrims arrived two decades ago. In 1631, William Claiborne established a trading post on the island, marking the beginning of the land.

Over time, Kent Island witnessed the ebb and flow of colonial powers, the trials of the Civil War, and the rise of industries that shaped its identity. Today, historic buildings and charming museums give us a glimpse into the island’s history, inviting travelers all over the country.

Here is what Kent Island has in store for you:

Bridges of Kent Island

Kent Island’s most esteemed features include its bridges that connect the island to the mainland. The Chesapeake Bay Bridge is an engineering marvel that offers breathtaking views. It stretches over 4 miles of water, connecting the region’s eastern and western shores.

Bay Bridge from Kent Island

The island features an abundance of marinas and restaurants that attract visitors from nearby Annapolis, Baltimore, and Washington DC.  Separated from the mainland by Kent Narrows, Kent Island once served as a trading post for the first permanent English settlement in Maryland.  The island later developed into a major seafood packing and processing area.

Stevensville is the largest town on Kent Island and is home to several historic structures, including the restored Stevensville Train Depot and Christ Church, home to Maryland’s oldest congregation which was founded in 1631.  Visitor information is available from the county visitor’s center at 117 East Main Street.

The area has lots of seafood restaurants and marinas.  It also has lots of outlet stores , with the Queenstown Premium Outlets nearby.  The Chesapeake Heritage and Visitor Center is located on the Kent Narrows waterfront.  The Exploration Center houses the Queen Anne’s County Office of Tourism and features interpretive displays about the Chesapeake Bay.  It’s also a good place to pick up pamphlets and brochures for area attractions.

Matapeake Clubhouse and Beach  is located on Kent Island’s western shore.  This small park offers nice views of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge, a public swimming beach, an outdoor amphitheater, woodland trail, picnic area, and a dog beach.

The Matapeake Pier and Boat Ramp and the Romancoke Pier and Kayak Ramp provide access for boating, paddling, and fishing. Matapeake has a 650′ long lighted pier that’s open 24 hours a day. The surrounding three-acre park has restrooms and a picnic area with grills.  There’s also a 25′ wide boat ramp at Matapeake. The Romancoke Pier has a kayak launching facility.

For those who enjoy lighthouses, the Bloody Point Bar Lighthouse can be seen from the southern point of Kent Island.

Terrapin Beach Nature Park is located just north of the Bay Bridge on Kent Island.  The park includes a one mile nature trail, pond, two observation blinds, and a boardwalk to the Chesapeake Bay. The park is located off MD 18, inside the Chesapeake Bay Business Park.

The Wildfowl Trust of North America operates the Chesapeake Bay Environmental Center (formerly known at the Horsehead Wetlands Center) just east of Kent Island. The 500 acre sanctuary features paths around six waterfowl ponds and through different types of  wetland habitats. Kayak and paddleboard rentals are available.

The Cross Island Trail spans Kent Island from Terrapin Nature Park to Kent Narrows. The trail is about six miles long. There are several places along the way where you can park and enter the trail including Terrapin Nature Park, Old Love Point Park, Castle Marina Road, Kent Narrows Boat Launching Ramp, and the Chesapeake Bay Exploration Center.

historic kent island

A home worth saving.

Rising out of the Chesapeake Bay waters is one of America’s oldest and least recognized English settlements, Maryland’s Kent Island. Settled in 1631, only 24 years after America’s first permanent English settlement, Jamestown, Kent Island holds as much historical weight as its brethren. So why is Kent Island not recognized and respected equally? Why are the histories of Jamestown, Plymouth, and the “Lost Colony” of Roanoke taught in school, but no one mentions Kent Island? The Isle of Kent is steeped in historical conflict, bloodshed, struggle, and survival. Yet it currently faces another major problem. Its land and historical sites are being overrun by irresponsible development, destroying the very thing that makes it so special. We’re here to change that...

The idea of Historic Kent Island began in 2020 when our founder, J. Coursey Willis, produced a video series called “My Morning Walk.” He traveled the island talking about the hidden history of his hometown. The history segments became more popular and one day, over a glass of wine with co-founder Jennifer Barrick, the seed was planted to save Kent Island. Our organization was established in 2021 with a mission to discover, restore, investigate, and preserve the historic and cultural heritage of Kent Island, Maryland. We affectionally call this system DRIP and apply it to everything we do. The island is in the crosshairs of irresponsible development, so foremost, we must spread awareness of its significance as one of America’s earliest and previously most disregarded English settlements. This is our foundation, and from there, we build. The sky is the limit, and we have big dreams, so we hope you’re ready. Help us end the madness and make a change.

support the cause

All great movements start with a few supporters; without support, any venture will fail. Therefore, we need your help. Your donation allows us to do more and focus on Kent Island’s greatest issues. We are constantly working on new programs as our budget expands, but currently concentrating on Memoirs of KI, Seven Secret Sites, Save the Graves, and Trails of Tales. But those things cost money… lots of money. Did you know one piece of signage costs roughly $2,500? This doesn’t even include the labor of research and writing! So please donate what you can to save where we live. Every dollar helps.

Things to Do In Kent Island MD and Queen Anne’s County: Feel The Joy

WHY GO : Romantics will find that the things to do in Kent Island – and throughout Queen Anne’s County Maryland – hit the high notes when it comes to an amorous getaway. That’s because the Island – and most of Queen Anne’s actually – is touched by the Chesapeake Bay, or surrounded by its waters.

Queen Anne’s County MD has the distinction of sitting almost within reach of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge, offering one chief reason to stay: a sunset the likes you’ve never seen before. But of course, there’s so much more.

Queen Annes County MD Bay View

Carved out of the easternmost part of the Delmarva Peninsula, Queen Anne’s County includes the 7 miles long and 4 miles wide Kent Island (which is not in Kent County, as would be assumed), often overlooked (and driven over) by travelers heading to the ocean on the western side of Delmarva.

For a mellow, quick escape, stop, stay a night at a lovely boutique hotel, check out one of the region’s last oyster shucking houses, kayak through unusual sea grass, and of course, dine on crab cakes overlooking the Chesapeake Bridge at sunset. (The latter  chosen as one of the Best Places in Maryland to Pop the Question) .

Discover Queen Anne’s secrets on this low-key but glorious Getaway.

Queen Anne’s County is on our list of 17 Best Romantic Getaways in Maryland . Check it out for more adventures with your loved one.

VISIT: Chesapeake Heritage and Visitor’s Center , Chester

Get your Queen Anne’s County MD bearings, grab some brochures, peruse the small museum, and climb the observation tower at the Chesapeake Heritage and Visitor’s Center for a bird’s eye view great views of Chester River. This ribbon of water separates Kent Island (in an area called The Narrows) from the Delmarva Peninsula, Grasonsville, and Ferry Point Park.

There are several cool things to see in a tiny exhibit that highlights a rare collection of Duck Stamps, decoys, and the products that put this area on the map: pumpkins, corn, crabs, oysters, sea turtles, ducks, tobacco, and rockfish. Open daily 10-4, free .

Waterman Soft Shell Clams Harris Seafood Grasonville MD

TOUR: Harris Seafood , Grasonville (Next door to Harris Crab House )

Try to snag a tour of Harris Seafood. If owner, Jason Ruth, is around, he might be able to escort you. This is an under the radar and unscheduled, but educational, few minute traipse though a working seafood processing and distribution facility.

“Unofficial Tour”

This unofficial “tour,” is really a behind the scenes look at people working hard. And, a hard look at how we get our crabs, oysters, and soft shell clams.

Chesapeake Bay crabs in bucket

Jason Ruth started hop-to-ing here when he was 13 years old – when it was W.H Harris Seafood. He subsequently purchased the wholesale business (but not the property, which also extends next door to Harris Crab House) when W.H. retired in 2004.

Since then, Ruth has expanded the business. He buys oysters from companies all over the East Coast, has them shucked in-house, and sells them to grocery stores and restaurants. In fact, Harris is one of the very last “shucking houses” in Maryland. Watching dozens of these master shuckers in action is something to see.

Clam Shuckers Harris Seafood Grasonville MD

About 65 watermen deliver a total of between 300-400 bushels a day to the back dock, where chairs are provided for tourists who want to watch the boats. Along with oysters, Harris Seafood also sells crabs (some cooked, to grocery stores like Wegman’s), and soft shell clams. Even if Ruth is not here, find your way to the back deck and watch the watermen at work.

Chesapeake Bay Environmental Center (CBEC), Grasonville MD

HIKE/KAYAK: Chesapeake Bay Environmental Center (CBEC) , Grasonville

With 510 acres on a migratory route, CBEC turns into a waterfowl wonderland in the fall – a magnet for wildlife photographers. (In fact, the Wildfowl Trust of North America is CBEC’s governing agency). Primarily an educational research and restoration organization, CBEC also features a “Green” Classroom and Visitor’s Center and acres of land open to the public.

There are four miles of flat, though muddy, hiking trails, with observation towers and duck blinds and a Raptor Rehabilitation Center on site, but if you really want to experience “Marshy Creek” – plan to rent a kayak (some hauling involved) or take a guided kayak tour ( about 2 hours).

Marshy Creek is brackish, inviting both salt water loving jellyfish, and fresh water ducks and geese to feed and float among its unique water grasses. With no development around, this is a tranquil paddle. Check website for kayak rental and guided tour dates and fees.

SELF-GUIDED WALKING TOUR: Historic Stevensville on Kent Island

Most people come to Historic Stevensville to for dinner or for the adorable bakery, Peace of Cake , but stay a bit to learn something.

Follow this Historic Stevensville self-guided walking tour to best see the buildings that provide a great and storied background of this small Kent Island burg.  The buildings are open with docents on the first Saturday of each month from May-November from 12-4.

Stop into the circa 1877 Stevensville MD Post Office, and you’ll receive a letter, highlighting the history of this mini-town, from a P.O box set up as it would have looked when the post office was in operation.

Nancy Cook at Cray House Stevensville MD

After the Post Office, head over a couple of blocks to the “Cray House,” built in 1809 by a ship’s carpenter named Denny. (Cray was the last to live here).

When the preservationists took over the Cray House, they discovered that termites had demolished most of the wood. So, in 2003, the home was rebuilt exactly as it had been the first time – with unique Post and Plank construction specific to the Tidewater Region.

Historic 1880 Christ Church Stevensville MD

The Historic 1880 Christ Church served a community of immigrants, many from Germany and Spain. Its mish-mash of Queen Ann and other architectural styles is worth seeing, and though no longer operating as a church, it can be used as such for weddings.

EXPLORE: The Kent Narrows

This is the name given to the ribbon of water that separates Kent Island from the Delmarva Peninsula. It’s where you’ll find a concentration of chain hotels and restaurants (see below for both).

HIKE: Terrapin Nature Park

There are three miles of trails in this 276-acre Terrapin Nature Park on the Bayfront. The 3.25 mile Oyster Chaff Walking Trail takes you from wildflower meadows, through tidal marsh and sandy beach front. You’re bound to see waterfowl, muskrats, and other marine life. The view of the Bay Bridge from here is stunning.

BIKE: Cross Island Trail

The 6.5 mile Cross Island Trail  cuts across Kent Island from Terrapin Park to the Chesapeake Heritage and Visitor Center at Kent Narrows. According to the website, “The trail wanders through farmlands, meadows and woods accented with ornamental trees. Flanked by park benches, the trail crosses several creeks with wooden bridges, offering a spectacular view of waterfowl and wetlands. Portable toilets are available year round.”

SIP: Love Point Vineyards

Love Point is the aptly named area of Kent Island MD that marks the mouth of the Chester River where it exits into the Chesapeake Bay, and the perfect setting for a winery. You don’t even have to love wine to feel your bliss at Love Point Vineyards – the views are so stunning in and of themselves. But, come to savor the fruit of the vine, join a yoga class, enjoy a special wine pairing dinner, or any other event throughout the year. Check website for event dates and times – and tasting room hours.

EAT: Libbeys Coastal Kitchen

Hemingway’s is closed for good. But, in its place, Libbeys Coastal Kitchen opened in 2022.  It’s the first place you see as you cross the Chesapeake Bay Bridge, and therein lies its popularity.  But it’s the sunset that will knock your socks off. When that ball of fire descends down through the bridge girders, the whole Bay seems aflame. No wonder photographers come here just for this reason.

EAT: Knoxie’s Table

Located at the Inn at Chesapeake Bay Beach Club, Knoxie’s Table is the haut-cuisine standout in a crab shack world. If you’re a large group, you can fit 24 in the stunning “Decanter Room” at no extra cost.

The Inn is not right on the waterfront. That area, the “Waterfront Campus,” is reserved for the wedding facilities down by the beach, But you get long views of the Bay from the top (4 th ) floor. This is all to say that if you’re expecting a beachfront property, don’t be disappointed when you drive up.

The ICBBC is, however, a beautiful, friendly, immaculate boutique hotel, with all kinds of amenities and more.

The Market, on the main floor, is a popular community and business meeting spot, where suited up men and women sit at butcher-block tables, laptops open. This was partly by design, as The Market offers free wi-fi. But the degree and swiftness of its popularity caught managers by delightful surprise.

Even if you are not attending one of three or four weddings going on at the same time at the Waterfront Campus, you can jump on a cruising bike (free use for guests) and explore the property.

On non-wedding days, all guests are free to use the beach or take a bottle of wine to the roof deck above the banquet hall and enjoy the sunset.

Is there such a thing as a soft shell CLAM? I imagine you meant soft shell crab.

Joan I think they are referring to steamers. Which I believe are sour shelol clans.

“Queen Anne’s County has the distinction of sitting almost within reach of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge,” Honey, here’s a little heads up; Queen Anne’s Co. starts ON the Bay Bridge! You forgot our golf courses( from county owned to PGA ), marinas, state park & arboretum AND ( infamously ) the location of the Russian ‘vacation compound’. FYI, Kent Island is just slightly larger than Manhattan, but we don’t have all those tall buildings and a LOT less people!!

No – there actually are “soft shelled clams.” I was surprised as well, but verified the fact.

Visit the scenic and historic kent island, md.

When cruising the Chesapeake Bay and reaching the midsection where the Bay Bridge straddles the Eastern and Western shores, many boaters think of Kent Island as just a convenient stop for fuel and provisions. But taking time to explore this island reveals a lovely destination teeming with an array of amenities and attractions.

visit kent island

As the largest island in the Bay (nearly 32 square miles), its 157 miles of shoreline offer plenty of places to dock. Most of the restaurants, bars, hotels and commercial activity happens along Route 50, especially around Kent Narrows, the passage spanned by a bridge that delivers guests to Maryland’s Eastern Shore. The lower part of the island is home to gracious homes, cornfields and coves where watermen harvest their daily catch.

Terrapin Nature Park, on the northwest section of the island, is home to a 3.2-mile walking trail that presents spectacular views of the Bay Bridge and introduces hikers to woodlands, tidal pools and wildlife. Walkers and bikers relish the flat, easy terrain. A few miles south, Matapeake Park offers a clubhouse, picnic area, woods for shade and a beach with a canine section where the entire crew — including Fido — can take a dip.

Along Route 50, the busy highway that leads to the Delaware beaches, stands an historic marker that declares this land in 1631 became the first English settlement in Maryland and the third oldest in America after Jamestown, VA, and Plymouth, MA. For centuries, the island was home to fishing villages and farms. The walking tour of Stevensville showcases the Victorian architecture in restored houses and train station.

Modern attractions include some unexpected amenities: two small airports located near marinas and two vineyards (Love Point Vineyards and Cascia Vineyards) on gorgeous waterfront properties. Cult Classic Brewery and Oh My Chocolates round out the secret indulgences.

Take a tour of Paul Reed Smith Guitars that designs instruments for celebrity musicians such as Carlos Santana and John Mayer, putt on smooth greens at Blue Heron Golf Course, or enjoy a seagull’s perspective on Delmarva Balloon Rides.

When all this outdoor fun leaves you wanting a bite or a brew, Kent Island’s restaurants accommodate any whim from the casual Big Owl’s Tiki Bar to the upscale Kent Island Resort. Most are clustered around Kent Narrows; all present stellar sunsets.

Kent Island

Kent Island is the largest island in the  Chesapeake Bay , but each day thousands of drivers pass by without much thought of it while crossing the  Chesapeake Bay Bridge  (William Preston Lane, Jr. Memorial Bridge). Kent, however, is a  Maryland  island worth visiting for a stopover or a longer stay. Steeped in history, ringed with beaches, and full of opportunities for recreation and relaxation, Kent Island is one of the gems of the Chesapeake region. Only about 20 miles from  Annapolis  and fewer than 50 miles from both  Washington, D.C.  and  Baltimore , Kent Island offers a quick escape from busy city life.

Geography Of Kent Island

Aerial sunny winter view of luxury duplex residential neighborhood on a manmade promontory with luxury sail boats docked in the marina at Kent Island Narrows Maryland

Kent Island rests at roughly the north-south midpoint of the Chesapeake Bay, the largest estuary in the United States. The island is also part of the narrowest portion of the bay; there are only about 4 miles of open water between the west side of the island and the bay’s western shoreline at Sandy Point, Maryland. To the east, Kent Island is barely separated from Maryland’s Eastern Shore region on the Delmarva Peninsula by the Kent Narrows, which is less than 1/4 mile wide at its narrowest. Kent Island is about 15 miles long (north-south) and about 6 miles across at its widest, covering roughly 31 square miles.

Geology And Climate

Kent Island has extensive marshlands, especially on the eastern side. A portion of the marshland in the Kent Narrows area has been dredged regularly since 1876 to maintain a navigable channel, but several other marshland areas maintain a more natural state. The island also has forested areas as well as previously forested areas that were cleared for agriculture over the past four centuries. Numerous inlets juts into the island, such as Cox Creek (the largest), Warehouse Creek, Shipping Creek, and Crab Alley Creek. Along with Maryland’s Eastern Shore region, Kent Island has a humid subtropical climate, with an average temperature of about 57 degrees Fahrenheit and an annual average precipitation of about 44 inches.

Fish And Other Wildlife

Heron perching on a piling at sunrise on the Chesapeake Ba

Kent Island is surrounded by some of the best fishing waters in the Chesapeake Bay, with species including striped bass, hardheads, white perch, bluefish, sea trout, and rockfish. People have long harvested shrimp, oysters, and crabs from Kent Island’s waters as well. While Kent Island is no longer a center of the commercial fishing industry in the Chesapeake Bay, numerous fishing and sightseeing charters still operate, mostly in the Kent Narrows area. The island is home to eagles, blue herons, foxes, deer, rabbits, and squirrels, including black squirrels. Protected areas of the island, such as Terrapin Nature Park, provide excellent wildlife sightseeing opportunities for visitors to Kent Island.

Kent Island has been inhabited for some 12,000 years, including the Matapeake people at the time of European contact. The first English settlement on Kent Island was established in 1631, marking the first European settlement in what is now Maryland, although  Virginia  also claimed the island for decades afterward. Kent Island was first used as a trading post with Native Americans, then a fishing center, and, by the mid-1800s, a busy stop for the various ferry lines that crossed the Chesapeake Bay. The completion of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge in 1952 hastened Kent Island’s transformation into a tourist destination as well as a “bedroom community” for commuters into Annapolis across the bay.

Points of Interest

Matapeake Fishing pier on the Chesapeake Bay in,Stevensville, Queen Anne's County, Maryland

Historic Stevensville:  The village of Stevensville used to be a key stop along the short railway that crossed Kent Island (between ferry stops on the east and west sides). The town’s charming downtown area feels as though it has been trapped in time since the end of the railroad in 1948.

Terrapin Park:  Situated just to the north of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge, Terrapin Park offers one of the most picturesque public beaches in the entire bay region. It also includes a 2.8-mile biking and walking trail that passes through a range of wildlife habitats.

Ferry Point Nature Park:  Located near the Kent Narrows, this park offers a more isolated public beach—you have to walk or bike a 1-mile trail to access it. But that trail takes you through the heart of 41 acres of beautiful tidal wetlands.

Kent Narrows Restaurants:  The Kent Narrows area is home to several popular crab restaurants and tiki bars, making it the heart of Kent Island’s nightlife. Visitors come by land, bridge, and water to enjoy great food and great fun.

Kent Island may be the Chesapeake Bay’s largest island, but it is still a small place with a cozy, relaxing feel. This relaxed vibe and its easy-to-access location near both Washington and Baltimore make it a great spot for a day trip. However, Kent Island also contains more than enough natural beauty, recreation, historical charm, and great food to be an ideal destination for a longer stay—or even a permanent relocation!

How The Return Of The Blues Hall Of Fame & Blues Music Awards In 2022 Captured The Spirit Of The Memphis Blues Community

After a COVID-induced hiatus, the Memphis blues community celebrated its talent and resilience at the 2022 Blues Hall Of Fame induction ceremony and Blues Music Awards.

Memphis is the cradle of blues music, a city whose history runs as deep as the Mississippi River hugging the city's limits. To celebrate that history, t he Memphis-based Blues Foundation hosted six days of events, beginning with the Blues Hall of Fame induction ceremony and the 43rd Blues Music Awards. The award ceremonies preceded the four-night International Blues Challenge talent contest at various clubs on the historic Beale Street.

The celebrations were a sort of comeback for Memphis' blues scene. Though tough for the music industry as a whole, two years of COVID-induced shutdowns seemed particularly hard on the tight-knit blues community, where artists, industry workers and fans often intermingle like long-missed family and friends.

"I always say the industry has not been that kind to me, but so many of the people have," 2020 Hall of Fame inductee Bettye LaVette , a classic R&B singer known for her emotional-yet-controlled vocals, told GRAMMY.com.

Held May 4 at the historic Orpheum Theater's Halloran Centre for Performing Arts & Education, the Blues Hall of Fame induction ceremony was a particularly large and emotive occasion. Because of COVID shutdowns, no Hall of Fame induction ceremony was held in 2020 and no new inductees were announced in 2021. The 2020 and 2022 classes were combined for this year's event.

Blues Music Awards 2022

"My career has been one of the most ridiculous things you ever heard of," Lavette continued. "They have literally carried me to this fifth career that I'm experiencing now. I call it my fifth career because every one of the other four started with a big bang and then it all turned to s*** and I had to start all over again."

The Blues Foundation started the Blues Hall of Fame in 1980 and has since inducted more than more than 400 artists, industry professionals, recordings, and works of literature. In 2015, the Hall of Fame established a brick-and-mortar presence in the foundation's downtown Memphis headquarters, which recently reopened following a renovation.

In addition to LaVette, 2020 performer inductees included Chicago harmonica player Billy Branch ; singer Eddie Boyd; George "Harmonica" Smith; guitarist/singer/songwriter Syl Johnson , who passed away just three month earlier; and blues pioneer Victoria Spivey, whose induction was accepted by GRAMMY nominee Maria Muldaur .

Non-performer inductees in the 2020 class included pioneering roots producer Ralph Peer. French music scholar Sebastian Danchin's 2001 book Earl Hooker, Blues Master was entered as a Classic Of Blues Literature and Howlin' Wolf: The Chess Box as a classic album. Arthur "Big Boy" Crudup's original recording of "That's All Right (Mama)"; Bertha "Chippie" Hill's 1926 hit "Trouble in Mind"; "Future Blues" by Delta bluesman Willie Brown; B.B. King 's first big hit, "3 O'Clock Blues"; and Ruth Brown 's "Mama, He Treats Your Daughter Mean" were included in the Hall as classic singles.

The 2022 class of inductees included performers Lucille Bogan and Little Willie John, whose induction was accepted by his son Keith John — a longtime backup singer for Stevie Wonder who evoked his father's soaring voice while thrilling the audience with off-the-cuff renditions of some of his father's hits like "Fever." Soul man Johnnie Taylor , another 2022 inductee, was honored in a separate, earlier ceremony to accommodate his family.

2022 non-performers included songwriter Otis Blackwell and blues historian and DJ Mary Katherine Aldin . Bo Diddley 's 1958 self-titled Chess/Checker debut was inducted as an album along with the singles "Good Rocking Tonight" by Roy Brown; "Rollin' and Tumblin'" by the Baby Face Leroy Trio; "Eyesight to the Blind" by Sonny Boy Williamson II; Bobby "Blue" Bland's "Farther Up the Road"; and B.B. King's "Rock Me Baby." English folklorist Bruce Bastin 's 1986 work Red River Blues: The Blues Tradition in the Southeast was entered in the literature category.

The following night, veteran California bluesman Tommy Castro was the big winner at the 43rd Annual Blues Music Awards. Castro took home three of the night's biggest honors: B.B. Entertainer of the Year, Album of the Year for his Alligator Records release Tommy Castro Presents A Bluesman Came To Town , and, with his backing group, the Painkillers, Band of the Year.

"The one I really wanted to see us get was the Band of the Year [award] because these guys work really hard," Castro told GRAMMY.com backstage after the show. "Nobody's in this for the money. It's a steady gig, but nobody's making lots of money doing this. They're really doing it out of love; you have to really be behind the music."

Florida singer/guitarist Selwyn Birchwood — who first burst on the scene in 2013 when he won the International Blues Challenge, an unsigned band contest presented by the Blues Foundation — captured the night's other big award: Best Song for "I'd Climb Mountains," off of his 2021 release, Living in a Burning House .

Blues Music Awards 2022

Other big winners on the night included flame-haired Canadian guitarist Sue Foley, who took home awards for Traditional Blues Album and the Koko Taylor Award for Best Traditional Artist-Female. Clarksdale, Mississippi, blues guitarist and singer Christone "Kingfish" Ingram , fresh off a GRAMMY win for Best Contemporary Blues Album at the 2022 GRAMMYs , also received awards for Best Contemporary Blues Album for his record 662 and Best Contemporary Blues Artist-Male. Two-time GRAMMY winner Taj Mahal won Best Traditional Artist-Male.

In addition to Castro, the long night's lineup of performances included Birchwood, a second-line-inspired set from Louisiana favorite Kenny Neal , and a Bobby "Blue" Bland tribute by the late blues great's son, Rodd Bland and his Members Only Band, who took home the Best Emerging Artist Album award for Live on Beale Street .

Singer/songwriter West won Best Country & Western Vocal Performance — Female GRAMMY at the 7th GRAMMY Awards  for her 1965 hit "Here Comes My Baby." Along with Patsy Cline and Loretta Lynn, West is still considered one of the leading ladies of country music.

Swing fiddler Gimble, one of the most important fiddlers in the genre, earned his first GRAMMY win for Best Country Instrumental Performance at the 36th GRAMMY Awards for "Red Wing" and his second and final career win in the same category at the 38th GRAMMYs for "Hightower."

Skaggs is a man of many instruments, several genres, a composer, and producer, but first associations place him with a mandolin playing bluegrass. He's won an impressive total of 14 career GRAMMYs for country and bluegrass. His most recent win was for Best Contemporary Christian Music Album at the 59th GRAMMY Awards for Love Remains .

For these three country dynamos, the formal induction ceremony into the Country Hall in their honor will take place later this year.
